Editorial Review

There was a time when IQ was considered the leading determinant of success. In this fascinating book, based on brain and behavioral research, Daniel Goleman argues that our IQ-idolizing view of intelligence is far too narrow. Instead, Goleman makes the case for "emotional intelligence" being the strongest indicator of human success. He defines emotional intelligence in terms of self-awareness, altruism, personal motivation, empathy, and the ability to love and be loved by friends, partners, and family members. People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships. Because emotional intelligence isn't fixed at birth, Goleman outlines how adults as well as parents of young children can sow the seeds. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great personal and professional growth tool
As owner of a corporate training consultancy - PICKS Training & Consulting - and 20-year sales manager, I found 'EI' to be extremely beneficial to me in both my personal development and my profession. For anybody who is interested in better understanding their emotions and harnessing them for good instead of trauma, I encourage you to read this book and practice its principles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking read
You know the feeling--your spouse says something that strikes you the wrong way, and involuntarily you tense up. You can almost feel your blood pressure rise. Without thinking, you respond emotionally, and soon what may have been intended as an innocuous comment has sparked a full-fledged marital battle that may leave as its aftermath lingering feelings of anger and resentment.
4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of emotions
Daniel Goleman has written an interesting book about the physiological and social consequences of emotions and our ability to control them.He makes a convincing case for emotional competence as perhaps a greater prerequisite for success than intellectual brilliance. Many of us can probably corroborate this for ourselves by recalling very intelligent people we have known who have a tendency to sabotage themselves through their inability to deal with other people appropriately.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are entangled...
Excellent book that revisits a message told many a times about taking things easy and appreciating what you have in life.
4-0 out of 5 stars It helps you cope or to make the appropriate changes if you can't cope
We all live, but as is mentioned in this book, "if you win the rat race, you're still a rat." The key is to be in the race, but take time to do other things that have greater meaning than the numbers used to keep a monetary score. In other words, win the rat race by becoming more than a rat that is focused only on the finish line and not on the scenery encountered along the way.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not a guide to a happy life.
This little booklet is an extended greeting card.It has a lot of white space, a lot of pictures, and enough greeting card thoughts to give some people a warm feeling. There is a lot more to living than taking a moment to have a warm feeling. We can all write a book like this: "Happiness is holding a purring kitten or playing with a joyful puppy."Here's another one: "Look closely at your child's face.Your child will grow and you will miss that child's innocent expression."If you want a small, simple giftbook with pretty pictures and thoughtful ideas I recommend instead, "Timeless Values", a Helen Exley Giftbook. If you really want a guide to a happy life, I recommend "Achieve Lasting Happiness, Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Life," by Robert Canright. This is a book that can change your life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Take-Away Told in a Clever Story
I picked up this book at the recommendation that the moral of this book would do me some good -- and it did. The key take-away is woven through a clever story of this short book.I picked it up at the bookstore and read through it in a few hours. It isrecommended for those looking for a reminder to see what's in front of them now (i.e. Don't forget to smell the flowers). However, it is NOT recommended for those looking for an eye-opening revelation.
1-0 out of 5 stars Annoying
I received this item in calendar form from a friend who is into inspirational messages. I am generally not opposed to inspirational messages, but this one gets me. I tear a page off each day to humor her, but don't dare to let her know that the book gets on my nerves.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Present : The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!
I found "The Present: The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!" to be a pleasant, easy read. The messages in the book were pretty clear early on (don't want to spoil it for those who haven't read the book), and are good to keep in mind, especially when you might "hit some bumps in the road of life." I'm sure I'll refer back to "The Present : The Secret to Enjoying Your Work And Life, Now!" whenever I need a reminder of what really are the important things in life.

Editorial Review

Here's a personal growth guidebook that's won the admiration and recommendation of Ted Hughes, Poet Laureate of England. He calls this "a brilliant, practical guide to awakening and training our vast, unused resources of intelligence and ability." Author Michael Gelb, founder of High Performance Learning and consultant for companies including AT&T and National Public Radio, says that we all can unlock the "da Vincian" genius inside us. Gelb says there are seven critical principles that need to be followed for success, whether you're learning a new language, studying to be a gourmet chef, or just hoping to be more effective on the job: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from the greatest Maven
Michael Gelb has spent a lifetime studying Leonardo. This book distills the key principles that Leonardo lived by and shows how we too may take our own journey of self-discovery toward excellence.
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money...
In the world of self-help books, this book is at the head of the pack for the average consumer. It is not a scholarly book, but still delivers higher level principles. While it is loosely based on Leonardo Da Vinci (and even encouraged me to research this brillant man), it does extrapolate ideas that Leonardo used naturally in his thinking processes. I take all self-help with a grain of salt and glean the best from each, and this book has several excellent chapters and exercises I have not come across before. I'd like to see Gelb write another/deeper book where he is able to delve further into these principles and not water down some otherwise breakthrough concepts. Overall, my creativity and thought processes improved, and that's worth the money spent on this book. ~Carol D. O'Dell, Author of MOTHERING MOTHER, Kunati Publishing, January 2007.

Editorial Review

An unexpected bestseller, this self-help book for women who want to hook a man seems to have struck a chord with desperate American women. Fein and Schneider, whose main credentials seem to be that they are married, lay out the rules to be followed for successfully snagging a dream hunk. And these rules are hard as cast-iron--Rule Five: Don't Call Him and Rarely Return His Calls. The idea is to return to pre-feminist mind games, exploiting the male hunting urge by playing hard to get. The result seems unliberating--Rule Seventeen: Let Him Take the Lead--but it seems to be capturing female minds. Rules Girls are eyeing the phone with steely resolve, and Rules seminars are springing up nationwide. Curious bachelors have been observed studying Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I first read this book years ago, and tossed it aside, thinking it very silly. About a year later I picked it up again, and realized it was a good book that teaches a woman boundaries in dating. It gives advice like don't sit on the phone all day talking to a guy you just met, telling him private things that you later regret (good tip, and something lots of women do to try to quickly get close to a guy...instead the guy gets scared off or you are later embarassed to have revealed so much).

5-0 out of 5 stars Showing Our True Colors
Mary Miscisin's book was outstanding! It was a fun and easy read, yet full of informative and interesting ideas about people and how and why they act the way they do.Having been an educator for many years, this is THE book I could have used long ago to better interact with my students and their parents. The book's content makes easy what Myers-Briggs tries to do.I would recommend it to anyone who has a desire to deal more effectively with children or adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Color Me Satisfied
Easy to read, full of wisdom.I never could figure out how to use Myers-Briggs.I can use this everyday with everyone I meet.Useful for all ages, both sexes.Entertaining presentation helps emphasize a language of Colors that is non-threatening, non-emotional, and constructively wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-long Learning!
As an educator with 30 years experience in the classroom and in coaching, I wish I could have read Mary Miscisin's book 30 years ago!I would have been a much better teacher and coach because I would have had a much better understanding of my students and athletes and how to more effectively communicate with them based on their colors.I couldn't put the book down because I kept meeting past students as well as people I know now represented in Miscisin's creative and stimulating examples."Showing Our True Colors" was so challenging and packed with information, yet so simple to understand and implement.Every parent, teacher, and coach ought to read the book.It is a must for couples and anyone who wants to communicate more effectively.Where was this book when I needed it?Oh, yeah, I still do need it today. Thanks Mary! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Mastermind "Bible"
Bill and Joe have done a wonderful job in this book of explaining what a mastermind is and the many types of masterminds that exist or that you can start to help you "Grow Rich". They cover everything from the history of masterminding, you will be surprised to read how far back it goes and how to start your own mastermind. Some of the key points I loved about the book were how to deal with the dynamics of the different personalities that may exist in a group and how to satisfy their needs. I am looking forward to meeting Joe and Bill and their mastermind group in the near future by qualifying for the promotion they had recently.

As someone who has been home officed for more than 10 years now, I really appreciated this book. Most of us who have worked in corporate America have participated in mastermind groups (of varying value) internal to our companies - yes, I'm referring to staff meetings, weekly tags, etc.We tend to complain about having to attend these meetings (especially if they are not well run), but then once we are home-officed, we often miss the camaraderie.

I am still working through the book but it has been an excellent guide to improving communication skills at all levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep Wisdom Practically Explained and Applied
"Love Talk" is a very practical book that is also very deep. What a rare combination. Far too often we find deep books that are vague and impractical or how-to manuals that are shallow and unbiblical. "Love Talk," as the authors accurately label it, is "a deep yet simple plan full of new insights that will revolutionize communication in love relationships."

Editorial Review

As CEO at accounting giant KPMG, Eugene O'Kelly was so immersed in his job that over thecourse of a decade, he managed to have lunch with his wife on weekdays just twice. His travelschedule was set 18 months out. Once, he was so obsessed with impressing a potential client that hetracked down the man's travel schedule, booked the seat next to him on a flight, schmoozed the guyall the way to Australia, landed the account, and flew immediately back to Manhattan. His Type-A ways vanished when, at age 53, a top neurosurgeon in New York told him he had late- stage brain cancer. "His eyes told me I would die soon. It was late spring. I had seen my last autumnin New York." [p.7] Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meaningful message for all who read...
Having just lost my own mother to Glioblastoma multiforme grade IV, I found this book comforting and relevant. It had a great message to share "take the time to tell those you love about the perfect moments you will remember about them". I have purchased a dozen copies since my first to send out to friends in memory of my own mother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for accountant!
What an inspirational book! I read this book few days prior to a job interview with KPMG. Well good news is.. I got the job! but the message behind this book is "balance" and purpose of life. Life is too short and many people knew that, but we need a reminder once a while to put us into perspective again. Gene is a visionary behind KPMG and to lost someone like him is definitely a lesson to learn. As an accountant, we know how many hours we have to spend at work, but think it this way to balance it out.. treat your family like your client. They need as much time as your other clients need you too. I would recommend this book for any accounting major college students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous
This book is phenomenal. Those with a Type A personality will certainly appreciate the approach the author took to put closure on his impending death.Since another reader had mentioned that Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" was better, I had decided to read both books.I absolutely loved Chasing Daylight better although both books have value.

I ordered this book thinking that it would help put some things in perspective...what I got was a total eye-opener.I have to admit, the man knows what he's talking about.I didn't think it would be as religious as it is, but I'm deeply involved anyhow.
1-0 out of 5 stars Size Matters
This miniature edition is too small to be of much value. When I purchased it, it was not at all obvious that it was a miniature edition, and I was shocked when it arrived. If you're already familiar with the book, it may be a helpful reminder, but it is no way to become familiar with Dr. Peale's work.It is not worth the 4.95 I paid for it, and the 3.99 shipping and handling is ludicrous.

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!!
First, to diffuse some of the objections to this book you might come across:
5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Vampires Strike 24/7
If you are tired of being used, abused and emotionally and physically drained by certain people at work, at home, at the malls and many other places and even by those who appear nice, this book is a must read.
5-0 out of 5 stars Protection from Vampires--not therapy
Emotional Vampires teaches you how to protect yourself from people who emotionally and materially drain you for their own gain and at your expense. These "vampires" prey on colleagues, friends, and family. They are especially dangerous because their self-absorption prevents them from seeing that they are harming others, and even makes them think they are helping others. "Vampires" are especially gifted at finding the most vulnerable victims. With Dr. Bernstein's help, these vampires will see you as no easy prey and move on to others. You recognize Emotional Vampires by the emotional aftermath: they "take a lot out of you," they leave you feeling "drained," they "pushed your buttons," they are "high maintenance," etc. Dr. Bernstein is right on the money with "vampire bite" as a metaphorical diagnosis for the real harm these types cause, but beware: the fangs seldom show, and emotional vampires can seem as harmless and ineffectual as Aunt Bea, or as affable as Will Rogers. Each chapter is a recognizance of different "vampire" personality types. I realized I was particularly vulnerable to the "histrionics" who thrive on drama for its own sake. I used Bernstein's techniques on a certain "histrionic" vampire in my life, and now I'm thankfully out of her perpetual soap opera. I urge everybody to buy this book. It's a funny and easy read, but the subject is serious and the insights ring deeply true. Once you have read it you will have the power to protect yourself from a lot of hard times and wasted hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best self help book ever, hands down
If you're only going to read one self help book, this is the one. This book deserves 100 stars, or infinite stars. It teaches you how to take control of your subconscious and your life so that you're no longer a victim of bad parents, bad environment, bad people and all the harmful psychological programming they put into you. There's a lot of people who badmouthed me and abused me because they're toxic and stupid. My father especially did that and he ruined my life. But the dumb kids in school were horrible too. You can now undo the damage they did. Then you can program your subconscious with new programming that will enable you to reach your goals and be how you would like to be. It helps you reach your true potential. There's so much good advice in this book. You have to do what the book says for it to work, though. If you don't use the techniques, you won't benefit. I think you probably should read this book multiple times to fully internalize its teachings. If you're already very mentally healthy and living to your potential and you had great parents, then maybe you don't need this book. But if you're having problems, if you feel like you're not living up to your potential, you HAVE to have this book. I always felt like there's was some subconscious garbage that was always holding me back and sabotaging me. I always wanted to be successful, but my subconscious wouldn't let me, even though I have a high IQ. The people around me had screwed me up too badly. Now I feel like I can finally get these monkeys off my back and finally get somewhere in life.

Editorial Review

When Harville Hendrix writes about relationships, he discusses them not just as an educator and a therapist, but as a man who has himself been through a failed marriage. Hendrix felt the sting of his divorce intensely because he believed it signaled not only his failure as a husband but also his failure as a couples counselor. Investigating why his marriage dissolved led him to start looking into the psychology of love. Marriage, he ultimately discovered, is the "practice of becoming passionate friends."Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged psychoanalysis
The basic idea of this book is that problems in marital relationships are caused by childhood psychological wounds. Those wounds are unconscious, but, according to the author, we all had them. Many of the exercises (e.g., listening exercises) would be helpful, but they are basic, and many of them are not really based on the theory. The author says repeatedly that we were "whole" humans in the womb, but we were damaged as children, and we need a healthy marriage to make us whole again. Some of the examples in the book reveal a patriarchal mindset. For example, in the section about "rewriting scripts" for arguments that a couple has repeatedly, the author suggests two alternatives that give the man what he wants, but no options for giving the woman what she wants. But if I object to that, I suppose that it must be because I was wounded as a child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love-filled Book
Falling in love is wonderful, but when the divorce rate is so high that less than 1 in 2 marriages succeed, many people want and need relationship advice, communications skills, and marriage counseling to make sure that their love can last. This book will help any couple find the love they want. Harville Hendrixhas more than 30 years' experience as an educator and therapist. He specializes in working with couples in private practice, teaching marital therapy to therapists, and conducting couples workshops across the country. This book will be very useful for just about any couple.

5-0 out of 5 stars My immediate recommendation for anyone who is about to marry .. wish someone had done that for me.
This book was prescribed for me in my first year of my now 7 year marriage. It highlighted many mysteries and removed many of my mythical but un-useful beliefs about 'the power of love.'It is remarkable in its power to change and its simplicity. Some of the insights have been applicable to all aspects of my life.I look back with real gratitude for the insights I gained from this book.I've often recommended the book to others, always with positive feedback. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Red Rubber Ball Book - Customer Service Review
The product was excellent; delivered quickly with excellent customer service.I was very impressed.Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bounce the Red Rubber Ball to Someone Else
After recently purchasing this book, I was so enthusiastic about its inspiration and clarity, that I bought another as a gift for a 16-year-old young man whom I thought could grasp the important messages that author Carroll is sending. However, I kept feeling that something was missing from this motivational story. What I realized is that Carroll is not only successful today due to allowing his inner strength and voice to help lead his way through life, but he also had strong contributions from others (his Grandmother, teachers, etc.) while creating his way.Unfortunately, with today's culture of "It's all about me," Carroll doesn't plant the idea anywhere in this book that once you realize your goals (or even during the process), part of the journey might include you becoming that teacher or "encourager" that he suggests you should seek out when finding your dream.I'm certain that the author does indeed give back, no doubt by setting an example for others, if not actively being involved in community service. But, adding a Chapter 8 with a message that finding and sustaining your life's work is just as much about changing yourself as it is at the same time how you can affect someone else's life by giving back.Whether it's donating your time, money or skills, contributing to your community completes a fulfilling and meaningful life. You can bounce that red rubber ball all by yourself, or you can share it with others.

Just when I think I'm getting out, they pull me back in! The many aspects of the addictive personality are complex and TRICKY. The chances of understanding how it all works, apart from an excellent book like this, are remote.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
Nakken's book provides a clear and comprehensive description of the main aspects of the addicted person. He discusses the stages of addiction, Society and addiction, family and addiction, and recovery.this book is definitely a useful read for those intereste in understanding addiction and what is actually going on within the addicted individual. However, we must always remember that people are unique and each case is individualized, thus these are generalizations and may not perfectly fit all who are addicted. The most imporatnt thing to realize is addiction is a disease and there is treatment.Highly recommended book. ... Editorial Review

Although the sheer size of this dense workbook might cause initial hyperventilation--280 full-size sheets of text--take heart (and a deep breath!): the many self-assessment tools and calming techniques presented in this fifth edition can help overcome anxiety and promote physical and emotional well-being. First introduced in 1980, the book received praise for presenting a comprehensive look at stress, its physical manifestations, and the multiple ways it can be managed. Twenty years later, its well-organized chapters on breathing, relaxation, meditation, thought stopping, and body awareness still guide the reader through copious self-help techniques to try and, eventually, master. Other chapters, including job stress management, goal setting and time management, and assertiveness training, focus on daily scenarios people often find distressing. Lessons in identifying key elements that trigger unpleasant responses and in reacting differently to these elements are designed to defuse perceived conflicts. For this edition, coauthors Martha Davis (psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry of Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, Santa Clara, CA), Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman (licensed clinical social worker with Kaiser Permanente Online), and Matthew McKay (clinical director of Haight-Ashbury Psychological Services, San Francisco, CA) have added topics on worry control, anger management, and eye-movement therapy. New diagrams and a more reader-friendly format should appeal to readers, despite a few typos and graphical mishaps. This is a valuable tool for therapists, their patients, and the stressed-at-large.
