Enlightening

An understandable and useful book
This book is approachable for nearly every reader.It puts complex concepts in terms that make sense without having to read over and over. This is a great starting point for anyone who is tryingto understand famliy function and disfunction.

Too many chiefs...
I've listened to the audio version of this book and I found it to be insightful and enlightening.I've also read the other reviews about this book and-well it is obvious that is just isn't for every one.Speaking to anyonymous about recovered memories, I have to say that I disagree completely.I am a victim of childhood abuse (not incest.I dissociated those memories and from time to time I acted them out(described as re-enactment by those who have studied PTSD).No Psychologist has told me this and in fact I went to prison because I refused to go to mental health after being court ordered to do so, specifically because I did not want them manipulating me or my thoughts.

My husband and I both liked the book because it gives practical ways to communicate, which can cross over inall aspects of life.It gives helpful, concrete tools to use in relationships.

This book, along with the non-Christian version, Fighting for your Marriage, is great! This is great marriage enrichment stuff and helps so much with communication, as well as increasing fun in your marriage.Great for small groups. [...]. Sound Advice for Breaking Bad Habits!
I saw this book just as I was about to call "that man" again--the one my friends told me to dump before I went completely crazy.This book is indeed a survival guide to letting go of toxic relationships that many of us have at some time in our lives.There are questions and writing exercises in the book that help us understand why we are attracted to men who have no interest in us romantically and never will regardless of what we do to change their minds.Instead, this book teaches us the techniques in recovering from rejection and moving on with the help of a support system.The writing exercises are invaluable and therapeutic.When you finish reading this book, you will have taken the first step towards finding and attracting men who are emotionally available and are able to meet your needs.So, before you pick up the phone, read this book!

This author can offer authoritative, insightful information to a recently heartbroken woman because she has an active psychotherapy practice in which she specifically deals with women who experience relationship issues.I found this book to offer clinical advice on some matters in terms easily understood by the layperson.This book explains why we often have the compulsion to call or otherwise cling to men who have clearly given us all indications that they no longer (or never) wish to commit to us and a relationship with us.I thank the author for creating this work because it truly helped me to refrain from calling (and allowing him to call me).I gleaned insight as to why, even after having left me, my ex still calls me to tell me that he loves me and wants to be with me--can we say AMBIVALENCE and MANIPULATION???I am glad that I had this book to assist me with an exceptionally painful breakup--it helped me to understand WHY the breakup was painful and offered some steps to take to work through it.I found this book to be timely and useful.THANKS A MILLION!

I bought this book for myself after I went through a break-up.It showed me that I was not the only one that felt that way and helped me a lot mainly by stating obvious things but sometimes hearing them again and again really helps. It's a good read
I liked the book and it didn't take long for me to read it. I did not grow up in a home with alcoholism or drug addiction (Other than nicotine), but I was able to relate to a lot of what was written in the book.

not helpful
I didn't find journaling and the recovery phase at all helpful. I think it's a lot of theory and not enough practical wisdom and the section on making requests for what you want in your partner totally ridiculous. In real life this doesn't work.

Recovery Tools
This book was recommended by my therapist. After going thru the whole book and writing all the exercises, I have unlocked and unloaded a ton of childhood pain and trauma.You will shed floods of tears and feel terrible feelings you have buried, but this process is like the purging of toxins so you can begin to heal.

*****The best wedding saver resource out there****
I bought this book about a year ago right after I got engaged.Since then I am constantly amazed at how much research and collaboration the authors have done on this book.I have spent hours in books store flipping through all the wedding books and have found that hands down this is the best out there if you are wanting to save some money and get the best bargain.I am definitely recommending this book to all my friends and everyone planning a wedding.

Great book
I have to admit, I plan events for a living (Fundraisers & Corporate events, but no clue on wedding planning) so I figured I needed something to "enlight me" and I bought this book from this website I have to say I love it! I has awesome ideas, obviously you might not agree with every single thing in it, but still, some of the ideas are great. Also, the book is kind of funny, the writers are great. I hightly recomend it.

Bridal Bargains is a great help!
There are so many factors that go into wedding planning, it can be overwhelming!I bought this book because I have a rather modest budget, but still want my special day to be, well, special.There are dozens of great tips, and tons of information - things I never would have thought of myself.My only complaint is the size and shape of the book itself - I suppose it's long and narrow to fit into a tote, but instead its a little difficult to deal with.Of course, this doesn't have anything to do with what's inside!I highly recommend this book! ... Saved my life

More Excellent Work

Help for the hopeless
I dont know what the author was talking about when he/she said that this particular book had poor-wording in it...I think not!!! Joyce Meyer writes books and gives lectures from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Many individual's lives are changed and transformed by knowing God more intimately. I think that Joyce Meyer helps many people, in particular women to have confidence in God and most importantly, within themselves. Each time a person is being used by God in a powerful way, Satan comes in to try to destroy that person God is using. Many people, particularly hurting people can be free from intimidation, and low-self-esteem through Joyce's book. This is a must-read! A++++

Everything will be okay ... once you admit that Dr. Laura's always right. This companion volume to the radio advice factory's 1994 bestseller (which tackled the stupid things women do) serves up plenty of the no-nonsense, old-fashioned morality that her legions of listeners love. Brutally reductive--but not necessarily wrong--this book chalks up men's problems to trying to save "damsels in distress," refusing to admit to a healthy dependence on others, climbing the career ladder to the detriment of your relationships, denying the duty and pleasure of child-rearing, and many others. Whatever your personal reaction to her brassy, unapologetic style, Dr. Schlessinger is a refreshing antidote to the wishy-washy "everything's relative and everyone's different" trend that held sway for a time. Classic Dr. Laura
I bought this book several years ago but only recently got around to reading it. I kept telling myself I would read it when I started to get the hankering to get married. Well, that time is here, so I pulled it out and read it. It is classic Dr. Laura all the way. I've been a very big fan of hers and have listened to her radio show off and on for the last 10 years! So I pretty much already know where she is coming from. I skipped over the chapters for men already married since it didn't apply to me. Since they pulled her radio show off the air here in my home town, this is the only thing I have left to guide me by. I will come back to it for the times when I feel like I need to hear what she has to say on certain "guy" issues. Always nice to have a woman's view on guy issues. Definetley a keeper.

Chapter one should be required reading for every 14-year-old
Brought up in a strong Christian tradition, I felt obligated and eager to give whenever asked and pretty much offered myself as a sacrifice for whomever came along...espcecially the Damsel in Distress.Such attitudes brought me to a place of usefulness in my career (physician) but also exposed me to the "Stupid Chivalry" trap.I lost a few fortunes and much sleep before I finally got slammed hard enough to be a little more careful with offering myself and the fruits of my labor.This book helped me see when I was about to make a useful sacrifice and when I was about to waste time or money (Stupid Chivalry) that might be better directed toward another person (How to know when I'm playing the Knight and when I'm playing the Fool).

Doing your Homo-work as a parent and Gay Parent
The writing of Harville Hendrix's have become my relationship bibles. I find his clear way of taking psychological theory and putting into practice for relationships of all kind very effective.
Not Your Average Parenting Book
I was somewhat disappointed, having read Hendrix's other books.This book is set up very much like Simple Abundance, and each day has its "words to live by".For example, there is no path to follow if you know your child is suffering from the psycholigical disorder that is commonly known as adolescence.Not bad, but not chock full of valuable exercises like his previous works. I recommend this book to every parent who mentions struggling with their child(ren).It goes beyond being just a parenting-technique book to helping the parent identify their own issues stemming from childhood.Through that process, the parent learns where his/her weaknesses or blocks are, so that they have the clarity to discern what is actually occurring with the child, rather than being clouded by his/her perceptions.From there, the parent can use the techniques taught in the book to help the child move successfully through the developmental phase that is causing frustration.Read more

Highly Recommended!
As a psychotherapist, I find myself talking about this book on a weekly basis. It is important for people to understand that committment phobia is a real syndrome that can be overcome. The expert guidance of these authors offer gives people insight AND the confidence to grow.

Not broke down well
I can't get into this book nor can I find what I'm looking for because it's not broke down well. "Make up Don't Break up" is WAY better and explains why people are "scared".

Women love the alpha male
When I was younger, I was more or less naturally good with women, and reading this book re-taught me everything I had forgotten about how to succeed with women.Sure there are tactics and techniques, but what it all comes down to is being the man (or being the alpha male).
Some Unrealistic Opinions
The idea that women likes sex as much as men do at the best seems crazy to me. In my 30 years of dealing with women (I am 44 now) I learned one important thing: «Women will do anything to avoid sex, if she has no some other personal interest to do it!»
It's All in Your Mind
Dating women is easy, I've learned and discovered thanks to this book, as long as you've got the confidence and alpha male mindset--plus if you know the basics of how to carry on a simple conversation and have good body language (such as not be hunched over with your eyes cast downward). This book helped me out so tremendously it's one of those few books that has had an absolutely profound impact on my life. I date the woman of my dreams right now. The sex with her is great, and it's a relationship on MY terms, so it's not like in the past where I was the beta puppydog always jumping to serve her. We will get married. And I owe it all to this book, but more of course to myself for following the advice this book gave me. Read more

A good read.
All in all, this book is about commitment phob men. It talks about how a man reacts to certain stumili women put out and then make their decisions. I found it to be a real eye-opening read given the subject matter is one that facinates most women. Perhpas you're unsure about men in this regard, so, this book can help. I also have found a few other good books on this site about this subject I liked, too. One is "Man Magnet" and another is this book.

A wonderful read with great wisdom
Loved this book Women Men Love, Women Men Leave : What Makes Men Want to Commit? not because I am looking to snag a man, but because as a widow after thirty eight years with my best friend I wanted to hear from a man what men think and why these days.It is a very informative read and one I would like to see more women read.Even married women whose marriages seem headed for rough waters. There are no games, just direct wisdom for women willing to be quiet and listen and learn.

An Important Book for Caregives
There are many books on how to care and plan for an elderly person, but this is one of the few designed to deal with the often delicate issue of communicating about those plans.This is an excellent book for anyone caring for seniors, either as a family member or in a professional capacity. I am a legal aid hotline attorney and own an online medical supply business. In both capacities I work with many seniors and those who care for them.This book fills in an important gap in the caregiving relationship.I strongly recommend it.

Silly
I'll admit that I have not read this book, but I can make some observations since I am a man.It seems sexist to me that this book teaches you to "think like a guy".This assumes that all guys think alike.The truth is that guys come with many different personalities, ranging from sensitive and emotional to the stereotypical "player".Be yourself, and if the guy can't appreciate it, then move on.Lying about your sex life (as the book apparently gives the advice to make him feel like he's the first to introduce you to "kinky" sex) or lying about other things you feel will only lead to problems down the road.Be honest to him because, just like anyone else, guys want to know the real you.Trying to pigeonhole all male feelings, wants, and thinking is not only ridiculous, but very inaccurate and will lead to poor relationships as each man is going to be different and a woman should not assume anything about the person she is dating based only on gender.As a man I can tell you that men want mostly the same things as women in a relationship: honesty, love, and a girl they can relate to.Changing yourself and personality based on a book may help you in the short run to find men, but it certainly will not help in long term relationships.

Oh please!
As my brother said when flipping through this book, "If girls start acting like guys then what do we need them for?"Why should you pretend to be someone or something you're not to get a guy?If someone dumps you because you like mushy love songs, cry at sad movies, like babies and puppies, or because you have embarrassing girl products in your medicine cabinet, he isn't worth it anyway!And why on earth would you sleep with someone who didn't love you enough to want you around the next morning?"Think Like a Guy" doesn't guarantee you a perfect relationship anymore than The Rules or Stop Getting Dumped or Mars and Venus or any of the other ridiculous relationship books that have been popular over the last few years.Be yourself.If a man can't deal with that, then he isn't the right one for you.

Interesting, no-nonsense, and engaging.
This book is very interesting.As the title implies -- sociopaths seem to be "everywhere", for lack of a better word.But the book, in my opinion, is not meant to sensationalize or to scare -- in fact, I found it very informative.It's also not boring to read.Even if you aren't a Psychology buff (as I'm not) it is layman-friendly and doesn't use a lot of jargon from her field; and, when she does, Dr. Stout takes time to explain.She uses plenty of examples and takes a no-nonsense approach.
Conscience Or Superego?
Despite the marketing of the book as a "how to" in isolating destructive types conquering your life in which it succeeds..the book itself is also a lucid study in dealing with the questions surrounding human motivation, nature nurture arguements,inflation of ego,the clash between rugged individualism and the common good as well as clarity in outlining the arguments with evolutionary biology and psychology as to the future of mankind and the creation of a just society based on conscience.
If you deal with people, you need this book
Remarkable insight and non-judgmental. Anyone in a profession that deals directly with people, i.e.. teachers, lawyers, human resource, etc. should read this book.
