Essential Reading
Fromm does a great job of reviewing the various "types" of Love and providing the characteristics of each. His review clarifies what purpose each kind of love serves in our lives.
Interesting but inconsistent and contextually illogical
THE ART OF LOVING purports to be a manual for the heart. Reading this book evokes within me feelings of irritation & frustration rather than love. Much of the irritation comes from his incapacity for logical thinking and consistency. Perhaps he disdains logic, but this is probably a symptom of my inability to empathize with his logical blindness.

I find Mr. Fromm's book The Art of Loving to be very helpful and informative in understanding how our love relationships work.After attaining the knowledge of how love, attraction and relationships function and after personally experiencing these phenomena, he reminds us that the most important factor in any art is being in the moment and allowing one's intuition to lead."Working On Your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane is also a great practical handbook for living in the moment and using awareness and intuition as tools in creating love in all aspects of life.I highly recommend their book as a follow up to The Art of Love! ... Very helpful without being preachy
I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.
This book really is ground breaking
Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper.At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake.Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again.This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

It certainly is a choice
Don't let the title fool you.Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency.Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other".Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery.Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well.I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship. ... Excellent book!
I felt this book was insightful, consise, and most importantly helpful.The strategies in this book focus on automatic thoughts, your perception of your mate, and how to foster good communication.The tone of the book is very friendly and non confrontational.
Great book, but some shortcomings.....
This is a great book on cognitve therapy as it applies to relationships.It is well-written, rigorous and illustrates important points with useful examples.

These messages are obvious
I bought this book because I loved the No Cry Sleep Solution.After reading the first three examples and the "hidden" messages, I was completely disappointed and returned the book.I found that I didn't even need to finish reading the chapter to guess at what the message was.In one of the chapters, Pantley uses an example from her own parenting.I thought, okay, now she's going to share with us one of her mistakes and how she learned from it, and was about to give her some credit for being honest with her readers.Unfortunately for me, in this example she comes out having done everything correctly (not doing her child's homework project for him) and a number of her son's classmates' parents are in the wrong.Don't we all know that the child should do his/her OWN homework?And maybe by not allowing him/her to do the homework, we are saying that he/she isn't capable of doing it?Or that mom or dad will always be available to tackle the complicated stuff?I don't think that we need a book to figure that out.These messages are anything but subtle.

Challenging me to better parenting!
Reading this book has been a seriously eye-opening experience for me.While I "knew" that our children are little sponges and take in everything around them, I had no idea how many "hidden messages" I was giving my daughter that were so negative.I truly saw myself as an excellent and attached parent, and I still do, but this book has truly called me to a deeper parenting model.Not everyone comes from a wonderful family of origin, and this book showed me how many things I was passing on that I had no intention of teaching my daughter.I recommend this book to every parent!

Most powerful book I've ever read!
Powerful is the only word to describe this book.I can't believe the impact it can have on your life.I think if all parents were required to read it before their children were born our world would be a place I'd be more than happy to raise my 2 children in!Read more

Book of Persuasion
The Psychology of Persuasion is a fun read. It is written so that you can be more influential with your kids, your boss or your business dealings.Another very nice benefit of this book is the subject of collecting intelligence.I promise if you buy this book you will never see people the same. You will really understand how they think, how they decide things and how they buy. It's not boring mumbo jumbo like a college text. It's readable for real people.I got so many ideas between the book and the presentation that I'll be working a long time and making even more money.

Great book
This is an easy to read book, as any other book it uses many examples to understand the objectives. Something unique about this book is that it uses exercises; this is great for people who learn by repetition or practice.

Golden Nuggets
Often I have a difficult time remembering various techniques that I read about in my pursuit of knowledge. This book gives such useful information, that I felt compelled to make index cards illustrating the concepts. I carry one index card with me each day as I attempt in incorporate that day's golden nugget into my life.

A favorite many years ago and now again
This was one of my favorite books when it was first published decades ago. Now that I have a grandson and have seen how perfectly Goodman describes the little guy, I gave a copy to my daughter-in-law. It is entertaining and easy to read in bits and pieces and,astonishingly so,right on the money!

This horse stumbled out of the gate....
Patrick Morley has a heart for seeing men stand tall for the Lord. As I started the book, it seemed a little slow but as I stuck with it I found some solid teaching with worthwhile admonitions. Patrick does a good job of 'telling it like it is'. I read one of the older releases, I'm sure a recent release will have updated data.

Awesome book. Lots of easy reading. Tons of things all men should know.

This is profound "life thinking"
Wow--this should be required reading for every young man (I've given a copy to both of my college-aged sons.) Had I read it in my twenties, I sense I could have avoided (or at least better understood) some of my struggles with issues such as relationships, my career, anger, and so on.

Work for World Peace - Read this book and heal yourself
Robert Burney is a pioneer.His message breaks through to the core of the human condition over, and over, and over again.I found Robert's message at a time in my life when I needed it the most.It put some very big pieces of my personal puzzle(ment) together for me in a single resource.His message gave me practical hope and began to establish a new and deeper perspective in my daily life.He is not a "guru."He is an emotionally honest man who is conveying his truth without pretense.I believe he's been given the gift of assembling some very important Truths into one practical spiritual message that addresses the human condition.Anyone, regardless of their particular belief system, who considers his message will walk away better equipped to Live their life.I highly recommend this book.I bought the tapes too.

Healing for your Wounded Soul
I've read the book and am now ordering the cassette version.I've read other books on codependence but this one has a softer, more wholistic approach that I found quite satisfying.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I don't usually make notes in the books I read, but this one for some reason had me underlining, highlighting and making my own notes on the pages as I went along! Great stuff, it really resonated with me. The book is of great help if you wish to start becoming more aware of yourinner child and boundaries in relation to other people. If you don't know when/how/why people are pushing your buttons, you can't stop reacting and begin to find your equilibrium and inner peace. I especially appreciated Dr. Warren's comments and reflections on character. It is so important. The book is genuine, reads well, and held my attention. He knows what he is talking about. It is thorough and clear.

Excellent advice for people who want to get serious
I do life coaching and public speaking for a living, including in the areas of relationship and sexuality. I have read a lot of books on both of these topics and was very pleasantly surprised that this was a solidly written book and not just a lot of hype.
Good starting point
I read this book initially in conjunction with trying out e-harmony. With or without e-harmony or any other contact service, I think this book is a great starting point for "getting to know yourself," which is huge in terms of being able to identify the right kind of person with whom to develop a relationship.

Not male-bashing, but patriarchy bashing
I am applying to graduate school to be a Marriage and Family Counselor and I believe this book will be my guiding star. I've read a few reviews that claim it to be "male-bashing" or "all women are right, all men are wrong". Those who have written this must have not read the caring, empathic way that Terry has addressed the hurt that disconnection has caused these men he chronicles. I have many wonderful men in my life - a caring father, two wonderful older brothers - and I understand Terry's point that masculine in not necessarily an assignation of gender. There are masculine and feminine qualities, and both genders can have any of them. Predominantly, the men have masculine ones - however, did these reviewers not notice the example of the woman who fled to the "power-up" position in a masculine fashion? The response is wrong - not the gender that has this response forced upon them.
Fantastic!
I would recommend this book to everyone, especially anyone who grew up in the 50's and 60's where children were "seen and not heard", where men were raised to be straight-backed leaders of the family and women were raised to achieve less. Terrence Real's writing is creative, intelligent and reveals his deep concern for his clients. This book addresses so many of the issues my family and friends struggle with that I bought additional copies as gifts for them.

Just once I'd like to read a relationship book that isn't male-bashing
I'm with Tom Breton (reviewer) on this.Jeez, every book it seems I have read on relationships that talk about men, women, and society basically says that it's "all the man's fault," in some way, shape or form.I would love to see a book on relationships that discusses the many ways women disappoint menrather than seeing vice versa all the time.

Captures the Savory Moments with Cuteness and Wisdom
This book is a cute and wise display of every facet of friendship. The True Value of Friendship
The cover of this little book say it all. It's a book of animal photos depicting friendship. I love the two elephants, the way they are bumping up against each other, almost as if they are holding each other up, like friends do. But I think my favorite picture in this book is the one of the two lion cubs. One cup has his paw over the shoulder of the other. It is just so cute, so divine. You just know they are going to be friends forever. And as an added bonus, you not only get wonderful animal photos, but you get laughs galore here too. Amazing tools to help you become emotionally strong
With all the self-help/self-understanding/relationship books I've read (including Mars and Venus), yours has been the most influential in my life. It has given me the tools I've needed most to be my own person and begin to repair the damage my emotional unavailability has caused for both myself and my (beautiful, wonderful, amazing) wife.

A revelation ... a must read.
This book was a revelation ... finally I understand why my husband behaves the way he does and why I respond to him the way I do ... and why we kept engaging in such a futile dance on a daily basis. In a sense, it's taken us both "off the hook".

Great book
I knew I needed to set limits with other people, but I didn't have the words.This book does.It gives a few phrases that work everywhere with everyone, as well as other phrases to use with bosses vs. colleagues, or with coworkers vs. family and friends.It's not your average "self-help" book -- it's down to earth and truly useful.The author explains how women are raised to not stand up for themselves and then show how we can do it without getting the backlash we fear or expect.It's a great book.

Who needs Dr. Phil?
I wish I'd found this book years ago.The author doesn't just tell you what to say; she also tells you why it's important.What I found most helpful is that there's a major difference between being assertive and being aggressive, as well as between being civil and being passive.The ideas and skills in this book are so useful that my husband even read it and uses the skills at work and with me.This book has good ideas based on solid research that you can actually use!

A must have for all women

If you only buy one book on personality type, this should be it
I took the Myers Briggs personality test and learned a bit about personality type in communication and psych classes in college. But I wanted to know more. I wondered how I could figure out the personality types of others and use this information to help understand and communicate with others. I came across this book on Amazon and I think I purchased it because of all the great reviews. So I thought I should contribute a great review too. If you only buy one book on personality type I recommend this one. It's a great intro to type and it's very easy to understand. I refer back to it all the time. I also recommend "Just Your Type : Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type" by the same authors, which matches all 16 personality types with each other, explains how type affects couple's interactions and suggests potential sources of conflict. Also very interesting. I would definitely purchase other books by these authors.
Changed my way of seeing people!
This book has changed my life. It is amazing how much I learned about myself. Now I understand my wife and other people, and I don't judge them anymore. My relations to others is now easear and less stressfull. Thanks!

This Book is a WASTE
I found the book to be a waste of time, energy, ink, and trees. It is nothing more then common sense re-emphasized. It gives a little bit of understanding the basic personality types, but does not give one the ability to "speed read".
