Editorial Review

Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives topharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal referenceon hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patientwants to add herbs--let's say St. John's wort--to his drug regimen. Should thepatient stop taking the Paxil he's been on for depression, and if so, how longmust he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what's therecommended dosage?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for herbal medicines
Being a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine here in the US, I purchased the PDR for Herbal Medicines, 3rd ed. because I wanted to have access to western scientific resource material about the many (about 700) herbal medicinals covered in the volume. If you're looking for a good clinical or diagnostic manual for learning how to prescribe herbal medicinals, this book, by no means, articulates how to actually effectively prescribe herbal medicines properly. In order to prescribe herbal medicines safely and effectively, they must be applied according to a diagnostic pattern discrimination methodology that is suitable for each patient's constitution, clinical presentation and pathological disease situation. All that said, however, the book is an excellent resource for information about known scientific research, references to other source materials as well as pharmacological, chemical, toxicological cautions and contraindications for each herb covered in the volume. In fact, for this kind of information, the text is hard to beat. No one should use or prescribe a medicinal that they do not know the possible side effects and toxicity potential for that particular plant material. Although some naive individuals believe that all medicinal plants are safe to use, in fact, some herbal substances are toxic, contraindicated during pregnancy, should only be used for a short period of time, etc. This book has explicit information that is consistent with many of the best herbal medicine text books that I own. The book even has ratings by the well known German 'Commission E' board that approves herbal medicines in Europe for professional use. And if that isn't enough, many Chinese and Ayurvedic medicinals are also covered. There is also a section that covers many nutritional supplements on the market as well. All in all, I highly recommend the book to those who want detailed identification, dosage, usage, pharmacological and toxicological reference material for a large number of useful plant medicinal substances. This is a great book to fill in the blanks that many other reference texts simply do not cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough and useful reference
The PDR for Herbal Medicines is an excellent, thorough and scientific resource that will prove invaluable to physicians, nurse practitioners, naturopaths and others who use botanicals in the clinical setting. Also important for physicians who want to make sure that patients self-medicating with herbs are doing so safely. The various indexes make it easy to access vital facts rapidly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medication for different diagnostic
The most important about this book is that specified the medication for the specific diagnosis, also give you all the information about it and what other symptons can you see with your primary diagnostic, to know if the kid need an extra medication or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parent or Doctor, You Should Own This!
I have two children. My son has Childhood Onset Bipolar Disorder and ADD.My daughter has COBP, ADD and Anxiety Disorder.Having both the previous edition and this edition on my bookshelf has made my life so much easier in helping me and my children's psychologist manage my children's medication.I have felt so much better when I can come home from an office visit and look up medication and see all the potential side effects even though I also look at the pharmacutical information which comes with the medication, this book makes it much easier to understand for anyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Presents plain-terms need-to-know facts for parents
Written by a specialist in pediatric and adult psychopharmacology, Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medications For Kids is now in a newly revised edition with information on latest advances in treating specific disorders, tips on saving money on perscriptions, recent changes in legislative and health care affecting children's treatment, and more. Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medications For Kids presents plain-terms need-to-know facts for parents trying to figure out the which (if any) medication is the right choice for a growing child, and/or the best alternatives available. Covering disorders ranging from ADD to mood and anxiety disorders to schizophrenia and much more, Straight Talk About Psychiatric Medications For Kids cannot replace the diagnosis and advice of a pediatrician but is strongly recommended as prepatory reading to better acquaint oneself with the options before discussing matters of medication with the family doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing, good ideas - best quick read in public health
There have been a number of recent books about health habits and the environment, but this is by far the most enjoyable read. The writing is outstanding and not the clunky prose you often encounter in books written by academics- I wish I could write like them. Although written for a general audience, with (good) human interest anecdotes, the book nevertheless covers some deeper ideas, such as "curve shifting". The idea is that how often we encounter extreme outcomes, whether severe obesity, alcoholism, HIV, depends on "normal" or average behavior in the population. The early chapters that elaborate on those ideas alone are worth reading the book. I don't care too much about "passionate advocacy" and while the authors do fall into the advocacy camp, there is very little of the whining or scolding that has turned me off in other related books. Instead, arguments are generally well balanced even if you know on which side the authors are going to come down. It made a great read for a long flight. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Certainly another good medical reference book.
This edition the AMA encyclopedia (2003) is fully based on its first edition (1989), so the review of the first applies to the second. The 1989 had better illustrations on the whole, but their editors often included inappropriate depictions for no apparent reasons. This irresponsibility carried over into discussions particularly concerning ethical issues, such as abortion (unfortunately, this is something we have come to expect from the medical industry). It is evident the editors had a very large axe to grind when discussing medically induced death therapy that is applied to our unborn citizens. There was neither a mature discussion of the particularly disastrous effect on our black communities through America's legalized and ongoing killing of babies; nor a serious review of the more than ample documentation concerning the Abortion-Breast Cancer (ABC) link, nor an assessment of the emotion scarring of the widespread Post Abortion Syndrome.Similarly, its discussion of sodomy inexplicably still utilized the discredited and criminally derived Kinsey report, and did not give adequate warning about the inherent dangers of that lifestyle.By overlooking these deficiencies, much good knowledge is available in the work. This new 2003 version includes significant and helpful updates since the 1989 publication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Referrence Guide
The AMA Encyclopedia is invaluable. It's complete, detailed and well layed out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enzymes-Enzyme Therapy by Dr. Cichoke MD
This book explains the mechanics of enzymes within the food5-0 out of 5 stars Enzymes and Enzyme Therapy...
Dr. Cichoke shows how every life process depends on enzymes. He covers a broad range of subjects starting with digestion, elimination, co-enzymes, how to obtain more enzymes in your diet and through supplementation. He hasa 5-step program of do's and don'ts, including avoidance of aluminumcookware, refined sugars and salt, coffee, and so on. He also tells you howand what to eat and how to prepare foods for the best utilization ofenzymes. Dr. Cichoke addresses a large range of health problems fromextending life to AIDS and cancer. He also covers medications that affectenzymes, including OTC drugs and prescription drugs, as well as foods thatcontain enzyme inhibitors. This is a great book! One I believe everyoneshould own. I also would strongly suggest Dr. Cichoke's book "TheComplete Book of Enzyme Therapy". This book is set up very much likethe "Prescription for Natural Healing", however it addresseshealth from an enzyme point of view. I would rate them both a 5-star, musthave if you care at all about your health. This book was required readingfor my Enzymes class, "The Complete Book of Enzyme Therapy" wasnot, but after reading this one, I wanted to know more. This book is agreat intro to enzymes, the complete book goes even further. It is infairly simple to understand language if you have a bit of medcialbackground, you might need a medical dictionary if not. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a textbook for people actually wanting to learn
This book is only masquerading as a textbook -- it is a propaganda tool for those who want to stick their heads in the sand and not talk honestly about contraception.Check the index for yourself -- "birth control" and "contraception" are NOT EVEN LISTED.The section on AIDS does NOT MENTION condom use.It is appalling that in this day and age a textbook to be used in health class can leave out science, truth, and a well-rounded discussion of responsible use of contraceptives. This book deserves far less than 1 star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Text for Low Level Readers and ESL Students
Recently our school has been reviewing many text books for yournew health class. Our school is in an Urban district with many Englishas a Second Language students, so the problem that we found is that the challenge becomes the reading not the information. With the this text the reading level is low compared to the information presented. We were amazed at the supporting resources avalible. The book is very interactive with many options for labs and home activities. Our school has choosen this text to be implemented in our curriculum for the 2000-01 school year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach
I just heard this author speak at a teacher's conference. The material presented was excellent, and reflected the fresh and new approach of this book. I am so pleased that finally there is a book that treats the subject of body mechanics in a functional and practical way. This book is exactly what our profession has been waiting for. Buy it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
If you are a massage student, therapist, or teacher of massage therapy, you should buy this book. It's the best book written on body mechanics. It provides all the information needed to sustain a healthy massage career. The burn-out rate for massage therapists is too short; this book will help to eliminate it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem
I've been teaching massage for over 15 years, and in all that time I've never come across such a wonderful book on body mechanics. This book is a gem. As a teacher I find its content up-to-date and concise. The photos are clear, the exercises are brilliant, and the tips for students are an extra bonus. My students have learned an incredible amount from this book, and I see it in their work with each other. I wouldn't be without this book in the classroom, and my students will be so thankful for it after they graduate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best information available.
I have both editions of TOP DOCTOR'S. I am waiting for the next edition, as it seems more doctors voted the second time, and some mentioned in first book are no longer there. It's the best information available. No one knows what they are getting when going into surgery, nor just how good their doctor might be. It's my "Bible". I can't do without it. I carry a copy in my car when I travel, as it has doctors in most major cities.I have sent copies of the city that my children live in, and have recommended they only go to those doctors on list.I copy the cities I travel to in case of emergency.
1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Edition
I wrote the last review, giving this book high marks. That was the previous edition, however.I ordered the current edition, published in 2002, and am disappointed. The guide lists only physicians in large metropolitan areas. In Arizona, for instance, only physicians in the Phoenix area are listed, and in Washington, only those doctors in Seattle are listed. So if you live in a smaller county or are unable to travel to a large city, this book will not be helpful. 5-0 out of 5 stars Registered Nurse from Mt. Vernon, WA
When people decide to buy an automobile, or even a new vacuum cleaner, they research the products available before making their decision. Why, then, when they find they're in need of something like back surgery, do they choose whoever is readily available, or the local doctor who "seems like a really nice guy?"Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
This book is wonderful. If you are dealing with a family member who has a mental illness (particularly severe schizophrenia), you will find answers and helpful advice throughout this book. The first few chapters provide insight into the illness and it's especially readable because Woolis doesn't get overly medical. She provides enough information for you to understand about the illness and why your relative may have it. The book is chock-full of useful advice, and we have tried many of her suggestions (with success) already. She walks you through ways to talk to your family member during `episodes,` how to get them to perform basic tasks, how to ask them to take meds, and so on. There is advice for almost every situation. And, the best part is that Woolis treats the illness with respect, and encourages us to do the same throughout the entire book. I really felt that her advice is from the heart, and meant to help us. There is a section on how we need to focus on ourselves too, and that was particularly helpful. The book is very user-friendly, and can be read cover to cover or in sections. Many of the sections answer the questions most family members have, and offer concrete and realistic ways in which to handle the bizarre requests and behaviors that accompany mental illness. Everyone in our family has a copy that gets a lot of use. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't apply to everybody...
This book is excellent for people with relatives or friends who have severe mental illnesses, requiring occasional (or frequent) hospitalization and so on. It is a good resource in that it gives advice and tips for coping with various situations that absoultely will come up when you have a relationship with a mentally ill person. It is practical, there is no hypothesizing about what causes what, no blaming the family, very little "psychobabble." It's almost a how-to manual. It offers some insight into what the mentally ill person experiences, which is helpful to the family who may be frustrated and overwhelmed and very tired of trying to understand.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get Revised Edition

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Rip Off
How I wish I'd read the reviews first. Only a complete idiot would learn anythng from this book. The TV infomercial come-on about the single thing that does X and Y is garbage. Don't eat a lot of fat. Eat Fiber. Exercise. Brush your teeth for over 30 seconds. Start slow when working out with weights No --- Sherlock! Do DOT waste your money on any repackaged junk from Bottom line. At least I bought this worthless paperweight used. Too bad I can't return it and wasted even the shipping fee.
1-0 out of 5 stars Big waste of money. Nothing in book that everyone does not already know

4-0 out of 5 stars cooper clinic weight loss
I have not completely finished reading this book so I only gave 4 stars, but I am finding it very helpful.I also purchased the mayo clinic book and, between the two books, I am getting a much better idea of what to eat and how to go about it.They are very similar in their concepts.I really like this book and would recommend it.
