2-0 out of 5 stars limited use
I found the information on behaviour and animal welfare to be limited and, in places, questionable. For example the use of single animal hanging cages is treated as standard husbandry -- despite the strong recommendation in most national laws and guidleines that social contact and environmental enrichment be provided to rats in the laboratory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ref Book
This book has a lot to say....excellent reference book. If you do anything with the rat, then you need this book inspite of the price. The authors did a thorough job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Important but overpriced.
This book is a welcome addition for the in vivo investigator; we know so much about the theoretical bases of our experiments, but how many of us really have any formal knowledge of our most important research tools, theanimals themselves? For this reason, and in the interest of the generalwelfare of my experimental rats, I bought the book. There is muchinteresting and useful information presented by veterinarians whospecialize in lab animal medicine.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Authoritative Health Book- An indispensable Reference to Keep your Loved Ones Healthy
The "Jhons Hopkins Family Health Book" is the ultimate home reference tool to help you become an active partner in your family's health. Written and designed to be clear and readable, stands out for its accessibility, usefulness, and detailed coverage of health issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its genre
I have used this book for about five years to do introductory and background research.I own or have examined the leading competitors (Harvard, Cornell, Mayo guides). The Johns Hopkins guide is consistently the best.It provides concise and precise information and is clearly written. It is written for the intelligent and literate reader, and is less illustrated than some of the competitors, but the information content is consistently superior.

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive reference.
"The Johns Hopkins Family Health Book" is well-written, clearly organized, and very informative.I am finding it to be a valuable addition to my home library.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for everyone who takes prescription medication
In this modern era when pharmaceutical drugs are the main way that physicians treat illnesses and the average person routinely takes one or more prescription medications, it is essential that everyone learn the most important facts about their medications -- includingpossible interactions with other medications they may be taking. Yes, many medications come with some sort of printed insert full of fine print, but can you read and understand these inserts easily and with understanding? In many cases I can't, and I'm a research chemist with many years of training and 44 years of experience. That's why I turn to this excellent book by Dr. Rybacki when I want information about pharmaceutical drugs. It is well-written and easy-to-read and to understand. Furthermore, it almost invariably contains all the important information I am looking for, often including information I might not have thought that I needed. I can't recommend this important book too highly. I think everyone should have a copy -- including doctors. I'd like to add that even people who currently do not take any medications themselves may need this book if they care for children or relatives who do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and understand, but needs to cover newer drugs.
This book is very easy to use and is written in language that is easy to understand.I was disappointed that James Rybacki did not cover some of the newer drugs that are out and which have been used for several years. Many of these newer medications are being used more than some of the older medications which he did include in the book. I think that it needs further updating every year.

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute Best script book for laymen ever printed
The easiest, most understandable up to date book for laymen on the market, especialy when considering possible side effects of a med (as important as the targeted condition the med is taken for). It doesn't cover ALL drugs but the ones it does is in a comprehensive easy to use format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended Highly
As a surgeon who does a fair amount of breast surgery, I recommend this book, HIGHLY, to any body (including men) who may have or may be facing breast cancer. The book (which, yes, I have read), is given, by myself, to each and every patient of mine who has breast cancer. It IS, unfortunately, rather technical--but breast cancer isn't easy--and hence, this book.I believe strongly in educating patients as much as possible; my ONLY criticism of the book is lack of good, SIMPLE, photographs and illustrations which, of course, always makes a book easier to read.4/5 stars because of this.I will continue to purchase the book and give it to my patients. It will answer ALL of their questions--they will just have to dedicate their lives to educating themselves if they want to survive breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative and helpful place to start
My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2005. She was understandably worried and upset, facing many tests and being given a lot of information, some in terms she could not understand. I picked this book up for her in a local bookstore. I was impressed that it was written by breast cancer survivors ( who better to understand my sister's fears?) and it seemed to break down all the information into sections that were easy to read and comprehend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that is readable in a time of need.
I bought this book for a friend who has cancer. It offers information and support both medically and emotionally for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a gift for its clarity and kindness. An easy read that can help someone begin to be empowered when their world has been turned upside down.Thank you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
This book is very informative and has helped me numerous times to make correct judgements.5-0 out of 5 stars The Medical Advisor- best book I own!
I absolutely treasure this book and recommend that every household have it! I have turned to it time and time again and share it with family and friends. It is easy to understand, thorough and most of all easy to use. I feel more at ease knowing that I can understand my body better and can actually do something to help prevent and or cure myself. The best part is that it covers both conventional as well as alternative treatments for each ailment in just a few pages. I must say that everyone in my household has used it at one time or another and it is almost never up on the shelf...even when no one is sick, someone at home is reading it to understand the body better! It's that well written!!I wish Time Life would come out with an updated edition as I cannot find the book anymore and I'd like to purchase a copy for siblings who want one of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Home Needs The Medical Advisor
I bought The Medical Advisor in 1997 and it's one of the most important books I own. I use it to look up my symptoms whenever I get sick and check out all my medicine in the large drug reference section. This book is wonderfully comprehensive. Each topic is covered in four pages or less. In ten to fifteen minutes you find out what you need to know. The text iswell written and consistently uses language everyone can understand. That'swhy every home can use The Medical Advisor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Works great in public schools too!
I purchased this program with GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)funds from my district last year to be used with 12-14 year olds and the students really loved the CD for relaxation and even the children's stories. Many gifted and Indigo children get very anxious about feeling the need to be perfectionistic and this program enables them to relax and focus with more clarity when they use their imagination or take a test. I highly recommend it, even for teenagers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful addition to our Peace Curriculum!
As a Montessori directress, I have employed the Children's Awareness Curriculum in my classroom for more than a year. With each story, meditation, relaxation lesson and activity, the children's enjoyment levels and interest continue expanding on a consistent basis.Lori Lite's ideas have been a wonderful catalyst to a Peace curriculum that is building with each happy request by the children to do more of the activities. This foundation has led us to Yoga, self-affirming games, and cooperative play that exceeds not only my original intention in offering it to the children, but has made an impression and a significant impact on the way the children approach most new challenges posed to them.It is a terrific place to start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extra User Friendly!
I have been evaluating many books and curriculums designed to teach relaxation and stress management to children.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a nice surprise
I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book.My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Highway Bible
A few summers ago I drove from Los Angeles to Jacksonhole, WY & I was on a very strict diet to only eat organic fruits & vegetables.I discovered that that was nearly impossible to do in this country. I was shocked!! The junk food mentallity has taken over most of this country. Last summer while I was in Minneapolis at Ecopolitan Restaurant I was shown this book.Since that miraculous day, I now determine how I travel by which is the best route to go depending on what Healthy Highways recommends.I drive all over the country to various art shows & was going online to see where the best vegetarian places are.Because of this book I don't need to & I've made it my quest to try & go to as many places in this book as possible. It also makes traveling so much more fun & I feel better physically because I am eating better.I have driven throughtout the midwest, southwest, northwest, south & this year I hope to hit the east coast.Buy this book, it will literally save your life but be sure to telephone ahead to make sure the information is correct as some of the places have changed & it is better to be sure rather than driving all the way there only to discover it has closed or moved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Info
This book offered a lot of helpful information about detoxification through fasting. It gave me step by step, what to do to cleanse my body through fasting. However, I had read more than half of the book before I actually got any usable information. For such a small book, I thought it would be packed with info and how-to's on detoxification, but it constantly tells you to buy her other book "How to Feel Great All The Time".If you do lots of research on holistic health as I do,there is a lot of general information about eating healthy and such in this book, which I already know a lot about. If you know nothing about holistic health, this book will be an eye-opener.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to Detoxify Renew Your Body From Within
If you are interested in this subject, skip getting this pamphlet and get "How To Feel Great All The Time" by the same author. The same information and more, can be found in that book. "How to Detoxify...", reminds me of the give-away literature found in waiting rooms. The only reason that I am not livid about the cost and content is that it is now a gift for a friend that is interested in the subject.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has Changed My Life!
This book, even though it was written over 10 years ago, is profound its findings. It has changed the way I look at food and ingredient labels. The most valuable information is what he discoverd about added preservatives and pesticides in the foods we eat.It will make you NEVER want to eat packaged food again! His Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light suggestions for foods unsafe, moderately safe, and relatively safe is MOST helpful. If you are trying to improve your knowledge of what is healthy to eat and what is toxic, this book is an IMPORTANT book to have and keep in your library.I find myself referring back to it on a regular basis as I continue to try and memorize and avoid the bad additives in food.BUY THIS BOOK!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Diet for a poisoned planet
This book is so bad I don't know where to begin.Example: You shouldn't drink milk because dairy cows drink about 50 gal. of water per day, they compact the ground by walking on it and they contribute to destroying the rain forest. Maybe we shoudn't eat vegetables because farm machinery compacts the ground year after year. Not to worry the frost breaks up the ground just like it breaks up compacted cement highways every year.I don't know of too many cows in the rain forest.
5-0 out of 5 stars in spite of a huge smear campaign, a fine book
Pages six through ten in John C. Stauber's terrific book, "Toxic Sludge is Good for You", is entirely about the history of the heavy PR movement against this Steinman Poison Planet book. Stauber also explains the very conservative Everett Koop's close relations to prominent anti-environmentalist Elizabeth M Whelan (Whelan, to her credit, is however strongly opposed to tobacco). They joined with others in the chemical and P.R. industry to try to kill the effect of the Steinman book's initial release. As with Gary Webb in "Dark Alliance", and John Perkins with "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man", unrepentantly bad organizations know that you have to attack (in the case of Webb) or sometimes ignore (in the case of Perkins) the hardcore truth tellers; Today's public relations industry has to pay for "experts" to "prove" again and again that pollution and other bad things are either being overstated or cover up a much larger "benefit". Steinman's book has been classically smeared. On one side are the usual corporate groupies, heartless investors, and unfortunate dupes of a very uncool Public Relations campaign and on the other side is the rest of the world who wants to keep toxic stuff out of their children's bodies. If you are interested in this book, also check out the very interesting and very referenced "Toxic Sludge" recounting as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, tasty dishes
I've done the 30-Health Makeover several times, mostly because I miss something along the way, or forget things over time.I first started this program in 1999, lost about 60 lbs. (without much exercise as I was working about 75-90 hrs. a week and my skin, hair and nails became healthier.I've always had people at work asking me what I'm eating because it looks and smells delicious.I sometimes substitute less expensive fish and the program works fine.By the end of the month, you're pretty used to the food combining and it's not hard to come up with simple meals of your own that follow the rules. Also, many maintstream grocery stores now have organic foods and lots of soy and/or rice substitutes, so shopping is easier than it was when I first started the program.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 30 day total health makeover by Marilu Henner
I checked out this book from the library and thought it was great.I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the recipes call for some exotic ingredients. It's hard if you are on a budget.By the way I ordered this book from Amazon almost two months ago and still haven't recieved it.They never returned my money and they stopped responding to my emails. The book is good, but you might want to buy it somewhere else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Feel the difference!
I wasn't expecting much when I started this eating plan, but was pleasantly surprised. I DID feel much better. However, the food combining theory can be a little confusing, and the book needed to be a little clearer on substitutions. The recipes are tasty, but although none of the recipes call for adding salt, there is a prominent use of Tamari/soy sauce which is in itself high in sodium. If you are watching sodium, you might want to use another type of seasoning. Some of the recipes for example called for Sea Bass and/or Red Snapper and Ahi Tuna (the Sushi grade kind). At my supermarket, the sea bass was $20.00 lb.,I can only imagine what the Ahi tuna costs! I just substituted plain old tuna, and either cod or tilapia for the sea bass. Also, the menus needed to be planned better to utilize your leftovers. For example, I baked the "Mary Ann's Corn Muffins" recipe, which made 12 muffins. We were supposed to have them for breakfast for that one day, and nowhere on the plan did they appear again! So the next day, there was another different breakfast, with no usage for the leftover muffins, and no information on what to do in these cases. Some of the recipes that did allow you to use leftovers the next day, happened to be the recipes that made very small portions to begin with, so there WERE no leftovers! UGHHH! Also, you need to have a restaurant size icebox for all the veggies and ingredients. I found myself going shopping more frequently, running all over town to different stores to get some of the ingredients. Luckily, I live in an area that it's easy to find the different ingredients. If you are a working person, you will need to cook things the day before you need them to have it all ready on some occasions. I had to make my hubby's lunch the night before for some of the days, otherwise I'd be up all night cooking. It seemed I was in the kitchen way too frequently though. I was a little disappointed to find out that Marilu has a nanny employed! :) I wonder if that's who cuts up all the veggies in her home and prepares all of these meals. Because some are a little time consuming. Don't get me wrong, I like Marilu, and although there's a few downsides to the book, it is still worth doing. Sometimes celebrities forget about what it's like to be the "average" person. See Bass is ok for celebs, but there are other types of fish that are cheaper and also healthy. But the diet can become a little pricey if you get every single ingredient on the shopping lists - but in the end, you'll feel better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am clean of toxins
I had a 21 year history of allergies that was growing yearly - I was taking asthma medications daily, and I started to gain weight because any exercise initiated an asthma attack - so I started to become dormant.Literally I was backing out of life. Then I turned to allergy medications. They may have been over the counter, and represented as harmless, but I was tired, forgetful, and lacked enthusiasm about work, and life.So I started searching for alternative medicines.I tried different therapies, but nothing got rid of the asthma. Then I found this book, and read it.It totally made sense. But now I grappled with 'How am I going to do the actual program?'
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Data-A must for everyone on this earth
If you live in todays polluted enviorment, and the influence of dangerous drugs, and toxins in the air, and our food. You need this information.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Program!
It was interesting reading the misguided critics in saying one stays in the sauna five hours a day on the program. This is false. One does not stay in the sauna five hours STRAIGHT! There are breaks one takes, in & out, in & out, etc. One does get a medical check-up before starting, so the concerns of running being "bad" are unfounded. This program was popular and effective for several NYC firefighters of 9/11, and their successes were phenomenal.Do read the book and think for yourself. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Following This Book Is Livin' La Vida Cuckoo!
BEWARE LOW-CARBERS:This is NOT a low-carb book.Let me repeat.This is NOT a low-carb book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Low Carb is a misnomer
This book is in no way a book about a low-carb diet.It is a Whole Foods Eating Plan, as stated by the author. The only low carb foods the author wants you to eliminate are cookies, cakes, candies and other processed foods with high sugar. This diet allows you 5 carbohydrate food choices every day.How is that low carb??
1-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Healthy Eating but NOT Low Carb
I've read tons of low carb books, and most are really useful. As much as I tend to enjoy the Dummies series in general, though, this book is a bit questionable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Motivating, but not a training guide
As a recreational Mountain Biker, i found this book motivating. However, it's not a "training guide" for cyclists. Everyone that has never trained should consider buying this book, since it explains the principles involved in heart zone training. You will also find very interesting indoor workouts in the book. It's not the book for the intermediate cyclist.

2-0 out of 5 stars folks who work for Sally E shouldn't write reviews
Several people who work for Sally Edwards wrote glowing reviews of theis book.I think their are some ethical issues in reviewing a book written by your employer or business partner.4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for beginners but painful to read
This is a book one just wants to hate. The two authors waste pages writing praise for one another. They give their workout recipes (over 60) cutesy-poo names like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Snookie". Much of the book amounts to promotional messages for the programs by Heart Zones, of which one of the authors just happens to be CEO. Most disturbing, perhaps, the authors do not appear to have any medical or scientific credentials to backup their position as authorities.Read more
