Editorial Review

"I didn't choose to study breast cancer--it chose me," writes Jane A. Plant, Ph.D., chief scientist of the British Geological Survey. Plant knows firsthand the terrifying experience of battling breast cancer that grew progressively worse five times and spread to her lymph system. She also knows the exhilaration and empowerment of defeating it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must to read and keep for all breast cancer patients
I live in Spain, and some friends from the UK sent me a cutting on the book, which I ordered. I read it while I was in treatment and it helped me no end in many ways. I have followed the diet and I am now still in complete recession almost four years after I finished my treatment for breast cancer and secondary liver metastasis. The book is excellent and well-documented, and Jane Plant makes a convincing case very well indeed. For me the book is like a bible, and I have recommended to it to numerous friends and fellow patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Economics of Beast Cancer
Jane Plant's book is ground-breaking and courageous. Every woman who's had breast cancer should read it. This is information no-one else will give you. Breast cancer is a huge industry, with expensive chemotherapy treatments that benefit only about one in ten women. Conventional medicine is limited in what it can offer breast cancer patients, and tends to camouflage the picture with pink ribbons, "look good, feel good" programs, and the like. I agree with the reviewer who suggested that the dairy industry doesn't want this information out there (remember the Mad Cow scare and the beef industry?)Women in Holland (high dairy intake) and farmers' wives have a higher incidence of breast cancer. Breast cancer patients need to help themselves in any way they can. I have read many alternative-therapy books but this one is tops, and is a must-read not only for women but also for men who wish to avoid prostate cancer, which is now one in eight, same as breast cancer. By the way, I'm an MD and a breast cancer patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition and Cancer
This book by Jane Plant, a British geologist, deals with a very difficult and emotional subject for women, breast cancer. It also has the potential to raise the eyebrows of anyone with a scientific background. There are numerous traps that Jane Plant could have fallen into, however, she avoids all potential disasters and winds up with a very scientific treatise on the subject of nutrition and cancer (breast and prostate). The book is mostly about her fight against breast cancer and the revelation that Oriental women have a very low rate of breast cancer. From this morsel Jane deduces that there may be a significant dietary component to the cause of the disease. Working from there she goes on to discuss a number of scientific studies that involve the growth factors that are contained in dairy products. Jane uses logic and scientific fact to come to the conclusion that dairy products are the single most important factor causing breast cancer in western women. She concludes by offering an alternative diet for women who wish to lower their chances of contracting the disease. This book is a must read for any breast cancer activist and any health care professional who treats breast cancer in women. It is surprising that the book has not gotten more publicity and attention. I suspect the American dairy industry may have had something to do with that. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Recycling Personified
If you've read one Gary Null book, you've read them all.He is no doubt highly knowledgeable and dedicated to his subject, but when I buy two books with different titles by Gary Null and find they are the same, I'm pretty annoyed. His early books were taken directly from Herbert Sheldon's Natural Hygience material, which I assume must not have been copyrighted, and I felt ripped off then, in the 70's as I did recently when Amazon was good enough to give me a refund for one of the books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Actually, sort of surprised
I haven't been impressed with Gary's books as of late.I completely agree with a couple of the reviewers who claim Gary's books are just recycled material, over and over again.I couldn't agree more.... until this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gary Null did an excellent job of educating the importance of diet
Dr. Null's writing style simplifies the jargon, and communicates recent scientific studies about the importance of diet and exercise in a clear and meaningful way. Fast-food and soft-drink distributors have infiltrated our schools while our educators and decision-makers slash P.E. classes and neglect the importance of teaching students the absolute importance of feeding our bodies right. Gary Null inform the general public that we can heal ourselves, we do not need to depend on prescriptions, and invasive medical techniques to fix a problem. And we can rid ourselves of our addiction to fast food and junk food. Supplement with nutrients that you can trust are pure, fresh and undiluted, Do a whole body cleanse with natural juices and fasting,

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love MSM
MSM is wonderful for me.I have taken MSM for nearly 2 years now (off and on). I would quit taking it, just to see what would happen. It wouldn't take long before my pain and stiffness would return to my knees. I wouldn't want to go through life without MSM. I am able to go through life without pain in my knees when I take MSM on a regular schedule. I have had no problems taking MSM and I take 12,000 mg. a day. I use a powder MSM that I put in my water, which also encourages me to drink the water I need daily. I even use a MSM soap and lotion for my skin.It has helped my skin alot. I can't say enough good things about MSM. This is the first book I bought about MSM and would recommend it to anyone. I've also read many other papers and articles on MSM, plus I've read alot on the internet about MSM. In fact I've bought this book to give to other people. I am always telling the wonders of MSM to people. I wish you well and happy health.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the recipient of an internal cardioverter defibrillator after experiencing sudden cardiac death. This book was a wonderful help to both me and my family in dealing with theemotions of coming so close to death.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the breadth of what is included in this self-help book
Heartmates: A Guide for the Spousef the Heart Patient takes the loved one from the acute days of the partner's health crisis through personal feelings, issues and concerns, providing support for the "heartmate" as well as the patient. Relationship as well as family concerns are major topics of this self-help book. There is a thorough index, and the book can be read in one piece or in snippets as the heartmate becomes ready to struggle with the ongoing issues of her/his psycho-social-spiritual recovery. There is frank discussion of the most difficult issues, including the return of trust and intimacy in the couple's relationship as well as feeling isolated and crazy because of the grief that seems to be inappropriate because the patient has recovered. There is, since 1995, a companion self-help tool also available, The Heartmates Meditation Journal, an interactive healing tool taking the participant through a full year of recovery concerns. Both books are readily available, although the indication is listed as "backordered." ... Read more

Editorial Review

Lyme disease is so difficult to detect that the average sufferer sees five physicians before the disease is properly diagnosed. Thirty-five percent of Lyme disease patients suffer permanent bodily damage, and 17 percent lose their jobs. Karen Vanderhoof-Forschner fared even worse than that: she contracted the disease while pregnant (it was misdiagnosed as arthritis), and passed it on to her unborn child, who died when he was 6. She became an expert on ticks and the diseases they spread, started the Lyme Disease Foundation, and compiled all her knowledge into this book, a handy guide for anyone living in tick-infested areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basics Bookof major muscles and their function
This is a great book for the novice to see the major muscles and how they work in the body or for the more advanced anatomist that would like a review/quick look at them.Information is not dumbed down though just gives you the basic facts and a little extra to help put things in perspective and give you a better big picture understanding.Like that the pictures are clear.I love that he has practical applications sections on each like "body language weakness" which explains how one would act or look if have a weakness in certain muscle and "watch out" which explains movements that can injure the muscle discussed. Plus the other interesting helpful blurs like he explains the origin of the name.Definitely recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Special Tests for Orthopedic Examination
I bought this book in preparation for the NATA certification exam. This book is concise and has fairly good pictures for the orthopedic tests, however it lacks detail in explanation of tests. For example, on the Trendelenburg test it states that a positive finding indicates a weakness of the gluteus medius on the supported side.Even though this is accurate, it does not indicate that since the glut medius is innervated by the superior gluteal nerve from the L5 nerve root, a lesion to either of these structures will also cause a positive finding. In addition, and most noteably, there are serious errors in the cranial nerve assessment section which would indicate that the text had not been properly reviewed before publication. I would strongly caution anyone purchasing this book to ignore this chapter in the text and seek other references for neurologic assessment. ... Read more

Excellent exposition of a revolution in medical science that will eventually save millions of lives.Besides, even if he is only half-rght, how tough can it be to take a few vitamins, eat your vegetables, cut down on donuts and doritos, and take a walk (preferably uphill) once in a while? Moreover, it is also an excellent and clear example of the entrenched members of a group suppressing an idea that would take away their income derived from maintaining current orthodoxy. This has always been true and always will be true. Why?After all, if you had attended college and graduate school and trained for 5 or more years beyond that, and accumulated $200k+ in debt to become qualified to perform open heart surgery (or pick whatever profession or skill you like), and to be elevated into a position of seeming god-like powers, and to be worshipped by the multitudes, and to hear the exalted "Doctor" pronounced before your name (egos please stand up!) and then someone came along with a new theory that said your patient could take 10 cents worth of vitamins every day and avoid your surgical specialty, don't you think you'd be a little resistant too?It is easy to say, well they have no integrity. But look at your own life, how many times do you resist a better idea or a change because it will mean a loss of income or prestige or might be a blow to your pride or ego?Keeping your expensive house and your porsche and your kids in private school and your wife out of divorce court is an extremely powerful incentive to maintain the status quo which is a 7-figure income for a heart surgeon.Sad but true and the most basic of human nature, preserving your own life and lifestyle. However, in this case, belief in the cholesterol theory of heart disease and that surgery is the only solution has lead to millions of deaths and untold billions in costs, money that could have been invested in many, many other worthwhile projects. So, a word to the wise:keep your eyes and minds open and look for this anti-growth phenomena behind every bit of resistance to a new idea, especially if it will impact somebodies income or fame or power or status, the pride and ego hooks that most of us hang our self-respect and self-worth on.Remember, the same powerful motivator that would keep silent a group of highly-educated, very intelligent, hard working and dedicated individuals, is the same motivator that will push a 14-year-old to murder to join a gang, simple human pride and eqo with the desire to be liked and accepted by his peers.Only a few courageous individuals in history, and Kilmer McCully can be counted among them, have been willing to throw away their careers and sometimes their lives for the sake of the highest human values - honesty and integrity and fierce dedication to truth.McCully should win the nobel prize for his work.We should also, every day, give thanks to him and that handful who have brought us this far in human history with their courageous, daring work and vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for those wishing to prevent heart disease
One of the most tragic medical blunders of the past few decades is the incorrect dogma that coronary artery disease -- and resultant heart attacks -- are caused primarily by cholesterol and "artery clogging fat." Yes, arteries clogged with plaque (which contains cholesterol and fat) can result in heart attacks, but there is abundant evidence that the mere presence of cholesterol and fats in the body does not, by itself, cause arterial plaque to form. In fact, many slender people with "ideal" cholesterol levels have plaque-filled arteries which result in heart attacks. What medical dogma has overlooked until quite recently is that plaque builds up only in arteries that have been wounded in some fashion. Arterial plaque is, in essence a form of scab that forms on wounded arteries to protect us from internal hemorrhaging. What causes wounded arteries? One cause is free radicals, which can be combatted by antioxidants. But a second major cause of arterial wounding -- and arterial plaque -- was discovered by the author of this book, Dr. Kilmer McCully: elevated concentrations in the blood of a chemical called homocysteine. Homocysteine is a natural product of the metabolism af an amino acid called methionine and, therefore, our body's always contain some homocysteine. Vitamins B6, B12, and folic acid keep blood concentrations of homocysteine low enough to be safe. But deficiency of these vitamins can allow homocysteine to build up to concentrations that can wound our arteries and lead to the formation of arterial plaque -- which can eventually trigger a heart attack. Recent research has confirmed Dr. McCully's findings. If you want to understand the role of homocysteine in causing cardiovascular disease and resultant heart attacks -- and learn how to protect yourself from them -- I strongly suggest that you acquire and read this valuable book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars just returned
My family and I recently returned from a trip to Africa. We traveled with our two small children and had a wonderful time. This book was wonderful in leading us to beautiful destinations. Our trip would not have been the same without it.My husband is an army officer and had brought along his own guidebooks he obtained through the service. This is the one we relied on the most.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Purchase For Travelers To Africa
If you are planning to travel anywhere in Africa, especially Sub-Saharan Africa this small, handy book is a must. With the number of infectious diseases prevelant in Africa it is foolish to take unneccessary risks, butmost people are probably not familiar with the health risks and optionsopen to them. This book contains comprehensive information on what do tobefore you go, how to stay healthy, and what to do when you get back.Italso has a substantial list of symptoms, diseases and treatments just incase you do get sick (or injured from outdoor activities). It works foroutdoor adventurer's, resort go-ers, and urban-only businessmen.Plus itsminature size makes it convenient to carry. ...
