4-0 out of 5 stars Alternate point of view
While this book come across as a bit alarmist, it is a welcome alternative to other books on drugs, which are compilations of information provided by drug companies. The most useful feature of this book is the alternative treatments for each drug. These alternative treatments are much lower risk than the drugs they potentially replace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worst Pills, Best Pills:A Consumer's Guide to Avoiding Drug-Induced Death or Illness
A very useful guide to avoiding adverse drug interaction, especially for one who is taking multiple medications.Even my doctor did not warn of the danger of taking Ultracet and Celebrex together.

5-0 out of 5 stars The consummate Patient's Drug Reference
I have consulted the several editions of this book published since the 80's. The reviews are objective and easy to read. The informed patient should know what side-effects to watch for, what to discuss with the doctor, and when to just simply say NO to a prescription drug and ask for something else.We wouldn't think of taking a drug without researching it.Just what do you expect the pharmaceutical pamphlets to say?And the FDA relies on reports from the pharmaceuticals. It is the most comprehensive, user-friendly drug book I've ever read---and I have bought and read a few. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Book is well written just not sure about the training
If you really want to try this training method this is a very detailed well written book that explains the method. I tried it but not long enough to tell you if it works or not. I was going to a gym with a partner and the trainers in the gym got very upset that my partner and I were using this method of training. We showed them the book and they were all totally against it saying that you have a greater risk of getting injuried than of getting pumped up. The book however says the opposite. If you want to try something different this is a good book to look at.

4-0 out of 5 stars CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK
I was one of those like many who did the high volume training for years, buying supplements that did nothing and feeling sore all the time. I wish I knew about this training then. It seems everywhere you read you need to do high volume. High volume got me some definition and some muscle mass. But anyone will get that when they first start to train. But your results will most likely stop and you will wonder why you are not getting more results for doing more training. I thought the same thing. Until now.
1-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree with below
The other reviews are unfortunately correct.I stuck with this program for about 3 months. My holds increased quite well, but after three months, I took some time to recover and went in to test how my full range of motion strenth had improved.IT HAD NOT INCREASED AT ALL.Visually, nothing had changed as well.I was very excited about this idea, but unfortunately it doesn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and helpful addition to the literature on chronic illness and anxiety
This is a wonderful addition to the literature on anxiety and chronic illness. The wisdom here is invaluable, and it is expressed in such a way that I think people with these kinds of chronic symptoms can't help but recognize their own thought patterns here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Newly revised?
If you are on some kind of Healthy plan and are thinking of using this book to help you plan your eating when you are not at home, think again. The last revision of the book was in 1991 and several of the Restarurants and Brands listed no longer exist. Of those that do, watch out. This book includes listings for menu items which no longer exist, or which were changes within the last few years.5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book!
I found this book to be very helpful in finding the exchanges for various foods.I wish it would have been a bit smaller in actually dimensions (like a paperback book), but other than that it is extremely helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars My over-all favorite
I have been studying homeopathy for 30 years & when I do not have time to fully repertorize an illness (which is almost NEVER with anything acute these days!) this book is my first resource. It seems to cover most acute illnesses & is especially good for treating colds, flu, stings, gas, teething problems, sore throats, etc....
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent home reference
This is an excellent book overall and is the text for the National Center for Homeopathy's study group course.Dr. Panos gives verbose, anecdotal images of the differences between the different remedies for a given ailment, as well as good general background on homeopathy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An empowering book for everyone
Of all the homeopathic books written for the general public, this is one of the most useful. If you've suffered a minor injury, or come down with a cold, flu or earache, or if you are having an upset stomach, this book willquickly guide you to the correct remedy. It is easily understood by themedical layperson, and it will give you solid knowledge of how to treatyourself and others in a safe, natural way, without the risks, side-effectsand costs of conventional drugs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous and Important Work
Did you know that antidepressant dose reduction and discontinuation can cause severe and debilitating withdrawal reactions? While 10% of the US population are taking antidepressants, most people, including most doctors, have never heard of antidepressant addiction and withdrawal.Glenmullen does a fine job getting the word out about this urgent health crisis. In 2004 Congress had to force the FDA and drug manufacturers to acknowledge the well-established link between antidepressant use and increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.Glenmullen shows how severe withdrawal symptoms, which can occur within hours of a missed dose, can actually drive a person to suicide. Many face a horrible dilemma when their withdrawal symptoms are misdiagnosed as relapse.Glenmullen must be applauded for taking on his own colleagues, some of whom have accepted huge fees from the drug companies to suppress and misrepressent the severity of antidepressant "discontinuation syndrome."Numerous misdeeds are revealed in Glenmullen's astute analysis, but the book's primary purpose is not critical. He presents a detailed 5 step method for helping those who want or need to stop taking these drugs. The good news, according to Glenmullen, is that patients are "almost always" able to wean off these drugs if the dose is reduced gradually (according to each individual's tolerance) with the vigilant care of a knowledgable doctor who is willing to put in the many weeks, sometimes many months, required. To his credit, Glenmullen explores the limits to his method in the story of Andy, a 16 year old boy, who after a month on Effexor, decided he wanted off, but had to spend a whole year of his young life in hell caught between the side effects and severe withdrawal, despite a painfully slow dose reduction. Glenmullen would like to believe such reactions are rare, but what if they're not?Just because some people can reduce gradually with few problems, does not prove all people can.I am one like Andy.I too took Effexor.I spent 4 months reducing gradually and became so sick and debilitated, I had to quit my job. It's now been 10 weeks since I took my last dose and I am still too sick to function.I'm worried I may have been permanently damaged by this drug.I'm not depressed, but I have considered suicide.I'm a 53 year old woman with no husband or family to support me financially. If I had known when I started this drug 10 years ago that I could become this sick when I gradually reduced and discontinued it, I never would have taken it--but I couldn't have known 10 years ago because back then, the drug companies denied the existence of antidepressant withdrawal and deliberated suppressed and misrepresented the truth. They can't deny it any longer.Babies are being born addicted to Effexor.Their mothers may have known of the dangers, they may have tried to stop, but they couldn't because the withdrawal was too much to bear. These mothers were addicted by prescription with FDA approval. This is a major health crisis, much worse than crack babies.Glenmullen's book doesn't address addicted newborns, but you can read the horrible truth in Wyeth's most recent drug label for Effexor (June 2006, p24). In the debate over the risks and benefits of antidepressants, Glenmullen identifies himself as a moderate. He is, after all, a psychiatrist whose job is to dispense these meds.He deserves credit for trying to help the thousands of desperate victims, but his "solution" may offer only false hope, masking the problem and prolonging the suffering.Eventually the people will come to know the truth about these drugs and they will be banned or boycotted. Then those who have been profitting from the people's suffering will have to undergo their own painful withdrawal--from all that money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book didn't offer a VIABLE alternative for me
I've been suffering from panic disorder all my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars easy read
Easy read but a bit redundant in its explinations. The writing sounds like she is talking to you and is not as formal in language as other psychology books. Although it is dated the information within the book is useful for work being done today in this area.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic book in the field.
It was good to read this book. When I was doing play therapy as a counselor I used this book in my work.It doesn't tell the whole story of how to do play therapy, but it is a good addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific!
I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bell at the Helping Hands center almost 10 years ago. It is an amazing program and she is the most amazing person I have ever met. This book teaches you the fundamentals of how the Day Care operates and how to communicate with those afflicted with Dementia. After all these years I still rely on this book and its teachings in my work as a therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good idea
This book was very easy to read and understand and for someone just starting caregiving the book gives some good ideas. I do think though that for more indepth information there are better books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best book on caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease
As a professional in the Alzheimer's field, as well as a family caregiver, I have read dozens of books on caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Though there are many excellent ones (Claudia J. Strauss's "Talking to Alzheimer's" and Bell & Troxel's "The Best Friends' Book of Alzheimer's Activities" are other favorites), this is the first book I most recommend to anyone on the challenging journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. It is simply superb. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Different from prior versions
I would certainly recommend this item because of its 2006 updated information; however, if you are accustomed to the prior versions of QuickLook, be prepared for it to be a lot different. There is a delay before the program opens. When you search for a medication name, the result shows at the very bottom of the search result field instead of at the top where prior versions show and where it would be most logical, and the appendix tab is 'hidden' in the filter dropdown which overall makes this a more time-consuming process. It does have the same great features, but it's different and more cumbersome to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This is an excellent source of information, given at an appropriate level of detail: not too technical, yet comprehensive enough to be useful.I first purchased it when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I'm now revisiting it since my son was diagnosed with cancer.Part Five of the book describes treating the common cancers and covers over 51 types of cancer. At the end of each of the 51 sections is an incredibly helpful subsection "The Most Important Questions You Can Ask". For my mother's treatment, I brought the book with me during the doctor's consultation and asked each question that was listed. It opened the door for honest, realistic communication between the doctor, my mother and our family on a host of issues.I intend to bring the book with me for the doctor's consultation with my son.If you or a loved one has cancer, I highly recommend this book.It will serve as a valuable guide and help you to stay focused and informed when the riot of emotions threatens to overwhelm and incapacitate you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive and Readable Book on Cancer
I received a an earlier edition of this book in 1991 when I was diagnosed with colon cancer and found that the information on cancer was presented in such a way that most people could understand. Since that time, whenever I hear of someone having cancer, I buy a copy of the book and give it to them. The book is very comprehensive and besides covering all the different sites for cancer as well as treatment, it is well illustrated and has many references.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save you money!
If you consider taking OTCs pain relieviers and managing stress "home remedies," waste...er, spend your money on this overhyped collection of the same-old, same-old. If you want "real" home remedies, stick with the original books -- Home Remedies 1 and 2. This book is weak in its reporting and writing and fails to mention many of the current "in the news" health concerns (and promised solutions) for the elderly.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you think Ibuprofen is a "Home Remedy" You'll Love This.
I found this book condescending and weak on useful health advice.Despite the "home remedies" title, the book's solution for just about anything that ails you is Ibuprofen. I expected far more emphasis onnon-prescription health solutions from a book with the title "homeremedies".The book's heavy emphasis on the side effects ofprescription drugs made it clear that the authors assumed that the averagesenior is a prescription drug junkie and there is nothing in this book thatwill help such junkies kick their habits. 5-0 out of 5 stars Terminology for Allied Health Professionals
Being new to the healthcare field, I have very little knowledge of medical terminology and procedures. This book is incredibly informative in a way that is understandable to even a beginner. It's well written, with clear, concise terminology and has plenty of color illustrations to help make sense of what would otherwise be overwhelming to a non-clinical person.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE INFO THAN YOU MAY EVER NEED!
I am using this book right now in my Medical Terminology class and we are not using the whole book because I am not trying to be a Doctor or Nurse, but a Certified Medical Transcriptionist.Well, this book is impressive, to say the least.I am learning so much from the reading, the pictures, the 2 floppy disks and cassette tape that came with it.It is basically a textbook/workbook; there's a lot of review questions, etc. at the end of each chapter and also, on the floppies, there are sample tests and games to play to assist you in learning the material.Using the cassette tape has listening exercises on it so you can type along, as if the Doctor was dictating a letter and so you use it as dictation material and you can learn a lot of new medical terms that way, also.I don't think there could be a better book out there if you're wanting to learn Medical Terminology.I recommend it highly! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter
Don't buy this book if you are looking for a Calorie Counter. This book is a good reference for a Nutritionist or Professional Practitioner, but not for every-day use for diet management.
2-0 out of 5 stars Fifth Edition, yet still incomplete.
I've used the Nutrition Almanac, Third Edition, for years. This 'new' addition has very few updates compared to the third. It feels like it's written by someone working strictly with Western Medicine, even though it does give a person direction to some Natural treatments for the listed ailments. Also the book does not go too deeply into describing any vitamin or mineral.

4-0 out of 5 stars Toxic Relief
It took cancer to wake me up.I now do everything I can to inform my family and friends of the of the importance of a health lifestyle and eating habits. This author also wrote "What you don't know may be killing you"These two books are great to accidently leave at a loved ones home. They are filled with tons of improtant messages and very easy to relate to examples are given that help you understand what actually is happening to your body. My dad has gone from drinking no water to probably half of what he needs but this is a start, he will read more the next time I leave another book by accident...This author is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK
Every man and woman needs to reed this book, because today we all suffer one way or another from what we eat and consume. The book opens our eyes and minds and offers us the weapons we need to win the new age fight with a toxic environment that is no longer out there but it has been absorbed by our internal GI system as well showing its ugly face when we look in the mirror or when we develope chronic or accute conditions that no conventional doctor can explain, and even more so ourselves the ultimate victims of the toxic lifestyle we live.
