5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is the most influential book I have ever read and touched me in a way no other book has.Literally, it changed my life and the way I see our diet and our world.John Robbins is such an excellent writer. This book along with the PETA video "Meat your Meet" converted me for good to becoming a vegan.I have given copies to family, friends, even patients. It is a fact that so many health problems are CURED and or PREVENTED with a vegan diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book everybody must read!
I read the version in a different language. My husband can only read English so I bought him this book. He first felt bored when he read the first several chapters, all about characters of animals. Then he seemed like he was addicted to the book and tried to finished it. After he finsihed the book, he told me he wanted to eat vegetable. Since then, he is more vegetarian than I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie
This is a great book.John Robbins starts with one farm animal at a time and tells how that animal is sentient, can be characterized with what we might call human qualities, and then tells how that animal is treated on the factory farm. Each chapter begins with a quote you can use to further your campaign against factory farming.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Stance on Important Topic
Dr. Murray condons the use of Sucralose and Asparatame, pg 45. There is so much scientific data showing how harmful these pervasive substances are, it is unconscionable to approve their use in ANY way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Helpful
"Healing Foods" takes a holistic approach to health, starting with the food we put in our bodies.I found "Healing Foods" helpful in pointing out what kinds of fruit are best bought organic.Organic watermelon for instance is better than conventional watermelon due to its high absorption of pesticides etc.I wouldn't say "Healing Foods" is a bible, but it's a good reference on healthy living.Because it's a reference book and not a guide book, it requires you to have something in mind.If you have say "hazelnuts" in mind and you want to know how best to store them and what they're nutritional value is, then the book is helpful."Healing Foods" is not, however, a substitute for proper medical attention and especially acute medical care.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grenerally good book
I liked the presentation of the book. It has a list of all different kinds of foods and then gives the benefits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exersise managment
This is a great book for anyone who needs a reference for the human body in design and action. It can give you an insight as to how and why each part works in an easy and efficient manner thought up by some of the best in the field of human anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me to learn insertions and nerves supplying muscles
This book was wonderful for helping me get a better understanding of the muscles of the body.Being a new fitness trainer, it's really important to help my clients as much as possible.I also used another reference which was much easier to read then big anatomy and physiology textbooks.I highly recommend "Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology" by Patrick Leonardi. This book gets to the point and explains the muscles, bones, nerves and blood supply of the body in reader-friendly language. Both books helped me very much to get a better understanding of the body.

1-0 out of 5 stars How can there be missing pictures?
The diagrams are a little too schematic, showing some muscle bellies well displaced from their actual positions. What's worse is that the software doesn't have any pictures available for many of the muscles listed. There was also at least one difference from Gray's Anatomy that I think Gray got right and this book didn't.If I'd been able to try this before buying, I wouldn't have bought it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Desperate to find real help
My wife has been suffering for months with debilitating anxiety. In addition to medication and therapy, we have read about 6 (layman) books on the subject.I found this book to be the only secular book on the subject that offered practical, clear information that really helped.Save your money and order this book first. It is very comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety; please read this review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Typical Advise (that you've already heard)
This book is extremely helpful to those who have found other advise too elementary. If you have tried the basics - diet, relaxation, medications - and are not satisfied that you are getting to the ROOT of your problem, try this book. The author helps you discover personality traits and other issues that could be undermining your basic sense of security. I have always considered myself to be a very strong person and I was at a loss when I began experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. I quit caffeine, learned to relax and started eating better. It helped, but I still didn't feel "right." I have gotten much more relief from my symptoms by reading this book. The author asks questions to help the reader explore the BIG things in life, including love, spirituality and having a sense of purpose. He includes a lot of food for thought as well as practical advise on how to build for yourself a secure, meaningful life. The language is very easy to read, written intelligently and respectfully. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Its ok, his marketing ideas are fresh
I got this book thinking I would learn something new, my advice is this: If you have a strong base in Business Consulting, DONT BUY IT. If you have NO business savvy, then its for you. He really knows his stuff, but I was disappointed as I expected something else, and since I work for a business consulting firm, I was more than surprised to discover that its a BUSINESS CONSULTING BOOK. I had expected lists of gear to buy, places to call, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Book
I have owned a gym for three years. This book has transformed the way I think about my business.I would strongly recommend this book to anyone except my immediate competition. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Advice and Detail!
I am starting a World Gym in New England. Although there were only 2 reviews for this book (very good reviews I might ad), they both hit home with me. One of which was the Drapers' comments. Their gyms have an excellent reputation and seeing them praise this book was enough for me (no, I have never met the Drapers and do not kow them). About me: I have a BS and an MBA (majoring in Entrepreneurship) from a top business school in MA. Therefore, I have a good knowledge base of finance, marketing, and more. I also have very good managerial skills from my profession as a Project Manager and beleive I have good common sense. I read this book cover to cover. I learned something on just about every page. This book will take you from setting up pre-opening sales to having very specific checks and balances after the business is open. In addition, this book provides a full drawn out plan for you. I cannot praise this book enough. Although I have not put the teachings of this book to use, I found all of the teachings VERY informative and VERY sensible! Buy this book if you're opening a gym or have had a gym for a number of years. Well worth the $!!!!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me
First of all, I didn't think the book was very well written - it needed much tighter editing. Many points are repeated over and over again, and I found several typos. It is also heavily aimed at Americans with poor diets.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Fatigue of unknown origin" is not a diagnosis
At 29, I suddenly started feeling sick all the time.Doctors tested me for everything under the sun but found nothing. They "diagnosed" me with "Fatigue of unknown origin".By pure chance, I happened upon The Yeast Connection and it explained everything.I followed his diet recomendations and felt better almost immediately.I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't figured out how my diet and lifestyle were making me sick.I have cut out processed food and sugar, and now eat a diet mainly of organic whole vegetables and whole grains and I feel terrific.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Fatigue Explained
If you or someone you know suffers from fatigue, please buy this book.If you know of a child who is autistic or hyper or has learning problems, please buy this book for their parents.Dr. Crook's treatment program is arecommendation of a medicine from a doctor, along with watching what youeat, and other simple measures.Dr. Crook presented an excellent book, full of resources, actual patient scenarios, and changes to implementimmediately. The book can be passed on to anyone's doctor easily becauseDr. Crook explains that he himself is a doctor & states how he becameinvolved treating yeast. He explains the symptoms of yeast overgrowth inthe body, it's causes, and it's cures. The book gives so many cases ofpatients that it's easier to see how one patient's symptoms may differ fromanother's - but be related to your specific problem.I was diagnosed withEpstein-Barr virus and was told by my doctor that only my symptoms could betreated.Epstein-Barr is related to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & I havestrugged with tiredness for years. This book has so helped me.I boughtit on a Friday & am buying it Monday to take to my doctor.I am aborn-again Christian & this book is an answer to my prayer. Please buyit for anyone you know who has suffered with Chronic Fatigue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best singlenatural medicine book, I have read, which was written forboth laymen and practitioners
When patients ask me to recommend the book, most likely improve their health, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, Revised Second Edition, is the one I recommend, unless they suffer from diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or cancer.I recommend Michael Murray's How to Prevent and Treat Diabetes with Natural Medicine andHow to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine, when they are more specific, to patient problems. The information on liver detoxification, diabetes, alcoholism, attention deficits, depression, obesity, migraines, osteoarthritis, restless leg syndrome, obesity, high blood pressure, hepatitis and prostatitis has improved our patient outcomes. We have succeeded in totally eliminating restless leg syndromes, in 2 days, using research contained in this book. The prostatitis protocols have produced 75 % reductions in nocturia. The migraine protocols can totally eliminate histamine headaches and reduce migraine pain, at least 50 %.We were able to lower an insulin diabetic's blood sugar 50 points using Gymnema, a herbal, recommended by this book. The book isthoroughly and exhaustively researched and documented. This book is readable, unlike much of the original research, published in journals. The main addition, which would make the book more complete, would be additional information about bioidentical hormone replacement.I have heard Michael Murray lecture and he isbrilliant andknowledgeable. His interest in reducing suffering is obvious.Michael Murray and his books are excellent, impressive advertisements for Bastyr College of Natural Medicine, although I have never seen him promote Bastyr College. I doubt I am the first reader or lecture attendee, whowished theyhadtime to be trained, at Bastyr College, after learning how knowledgeable their professors are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deep
I ordered this book thinking that it would help put some things in perspective...what I got was a total eye-opener.I have to admit, the man knows what he's talking about.I didn't think it would be as religious as it is, but I'm deeply involved anyhow.
1-0 out of 5 stars Size Matters
This miniature edition is too small to be of much value. When I purchased it, it was not at all obvious that it was a miniature edition, and I was shocked when it arrived. If you're already familiar with the book, it may be a helpful reminder, but it is no way to become familiar with Dr. Peale's work.It is not worth the 4.95 I paid for it, and the 3.99 shipping and handling is ludicrous.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bowes & Church's Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
This book has good information, however, is not very useful for vegetarians or people who use frozen meals. There have been several food items that I looked up and could not find.It has more detail than the average person needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars 18th Edition Commentary
Compared to past editions, the newest one is more comprehensive. For example, analytical data is provided for each food item under salicylic acid, whereas past editions grouped foods by salicylate content categories. The only negative for me is the tiny print.

I purchased this book several years ago when I started counting carbohydrates.A nutritionist recommened it as being the most comprehensive resource of its kind.I have found it invaluable. The fact that is not only contains prepackaged food, but fresh foods, meats, homemade items and even some common restaurants (along with many many other catagories), makes it THE perfect resource. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for back pain sufferers.Simple and effective!
This is a wonderful well illustrated book with easy to perform exercises that are effective for back pain. The descriptions are easy to follow and there is not an overwhelming amount of detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great entry-level text for cranky backs
I had purchased Ungaro's Body in Motion and Siler's Pilates Body to begin doing pilates, as they were generally the most respected texts. But my back couldn't handle the most basic level of some of the introductory exercises. This book, however, along with King and Green's Back Strengthening Workout, has given me a sequence of exercises and modifications that (I can already feel after two weeks of use) will get me where I want to be. The introduction to this book is a little too technical on anatomical detail, and the Ungaro and Siler books are superior in terms of illustration and textual guidance at the advanced levels, but without this I'd be quitting and/or hurting before I ever got going with Pilates.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pilates Basics
If you ever taken a mat class you will know these exercises front and back, if you haven't then this very basic book will show you how to do the moves without hurting yourself for the most part. The straight leg positions are not the most comfortable position to be in when your low back hurts you. I like the floor movements on your back. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!
I was very pleased with this book! It made counting daily carbs and sticking to the Atkins' diet plan a lot easier. It also showed you how to eat real food, not just diet food, as well as restaurant and fast food. I would highly recommend this book to anyone counting carbs!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential addition to your personal library!
If you can purchase only one book about communicating health information to consumers, make it Helen Osborne's "Health Literacy from A to Z!" As a consumer health librarian working with people with disabilities, their caregivers and service providers, I have been a health literacy advocate for several years. Helen's articles and books were among the first I discovered. She continues to be a pioneer in the field, inspiring people to seek creative and effective ways to make health information accessible for everyone.
5-0 out of 5 stars Empower Your Patients With Help From This Book
We often think our patients understand us fully when we provide them with information regarding their diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. In fact studies show that over half of the adult population has trouble processing and acting on this information correctly. Poor compliance often leads to poor outcomes. We need to ensure that our patients get "the whole picture".

I bought this as my first book on homeopathic medicine in order to learn more about it.My conclusion is that there is woefully inadequate evidence to support the theory.
4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual claims require unusually good proof
Homeopathy was pioneered over 200 years ago. Practitioners and patients are convinced it has the power to heal. Today, some of the most famous and influential people in the world, including pop stars, politicians, footballers and even Prince Charles, all use homeopathic remedies. Yet according to traditional science, they are wasting their money. The basic principle of homeopathy is that cures like: that an ailment can be cured by small quantities of substances which produce the same symptoms. For example, it is believed that onions, which produce streaming, itchy eyes, can be used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever. However, many of the ingredients of homeopathic cures are poisonous if taken in large enough quantities. So homeopaths dilute the substances they are using in water or alcohol. This is where scientists become sceptical - because homeopathic solutions are diluted so many times they are unlikely to contain any of the original ingredients at all. Yet many of the people who take homeopathic medicines are convinced that they work. Has science missed something, or could there be a more conventional explanation?
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best home based homeopathy books
Each time this book was reprinted since the 1980's, I've bought the new editions and liked each one even more!I give it to all of my friends new to homeopathy. The chapters focus on specific ailments (sore throats, accidents and injuries, headaches, digestive problems, etc.) and have leading questions to ask the patient to help you find the correct remedy for the acute ailment. There are cautions about when you need to call a health care provider for an illness. And there are enough remedies described that you most often will find the one that will work. It's just a very helpful book and a good introduction to the wonders of homeopathy.I have shelves of homeopathy books, but I often start with this one if one of ourfamily is sick. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and politically correct.
Having a background in medicine, I am very disappointed. This book can be confusing and does not accurately or properly deal with serious health issues of the day. While subtle, it gives a free pass to destructive activities in the name of not offending while ignoring studies that show clearly show fatalities resulting from destructive life styles and beliefs. In my opinion, it gives the field of medicine a black eye and can't help but prompt the educated reader to question the validity of the writers. It is poorly written. Not the type of book I would recommend to my students or residents.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little bit of PR from Merck but still helpful ....
Despite its latest problems, Merck still dominates the drug market along with the other biggies. The vast majority of its drugs are effective and perfectly safe - though not without risk factors. As such, it is useful for patients to understand exactly what those drugs are, what they do, what dangers are present. This book will help patients understand. To a large degree what is contained in these pages are all present in package inserts but there is also a good deal of addtional information. It can be helpful and anything that helps one attain better health is worth a few bucks! ...
