5-0 out of 5 stars Eyeopening, precise, well-researched
As a nurse who worked with patients through each step of treatment -- and as a breast cancer survivor myself -- I found this book to be invaluable. It is a must-have for anyone being treated for breast cancer and building a library to understand it better. That's not just because it answers many important questions but because it raises some that scientists still need to answer, especially about environmental links, links to foods, genes, obesity, etc. We need more answers in each of those areas. A chapter is devoted to breast cancer myths, which is very eyeopening. It discusses many common beliefs dangled out there as facts, which turn out not to have much science behind them, like if you eat a lot of broccoli you won't get breast cancer. For some reason many people, some health care professionals included, believe this stuff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive
My oncologist had two of these books on his desk and gave me one the day I was told about my diagnosis. I started thumbing through it when I got home and could not put it down because with each page, all of the questions I had about this terrifying disease were being answered. I wound up reading it from cover to cover in two days.

I don't like it - I work in critical care and it fails to list the intravenous drug compatibilities that Nursing 2004 Drug Reference has.IN critical care IV drug compatibilities are so important! So, I'm still relying on my Nursing 2004 book at work. Will not buy this book again - wasted my money - Janet

This book will be good for use in the classroom or by anyone seriously considering going the vegetarian route. The author has done a lot of research and includes many citations, articles, and pictures that she has found for her case: pro animals and healthy food; anti fast food and animal mistreatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills an Important Need
There are many books about sports nutrition, but very few that focus specifically on nutrition during exercise. In fact, to my knowledge there were none until this one came along. The Performance Zone, written by exercise physiologist John Ivy, Ph.D., and biochemist Robert Portman, Ph.D., fills a major informational void by providing athletes in all sports with detailed guidelines for fueling their bodies during training and competition.5-0 out of 5 stars sound nutrition information
New sports nutrition books seem to show up every week, so it is easy to be skeptical of each new one. But Ivy and Portman have put together one terrific book that unites nutrition and performance with sound (but not overwhelming) science giving very practical advice on the use of nutrition to improve exercise performance. Put both this and their companion book, Nutrient Timing, on the bookshelf and forget all those other books. No matter if you are a lifter or a runner, these will be all you need. ... Read more

When I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer [hurthle cell carcinoma] I was looking for a good book to learn more about this condition. This is that book.It is well written, in plain language, and I could understand everything written there. Thanks to Ms. Rosenthal for writing such a fine book.I have referred many of my friends and colleagues who have come to me for advice to this great resource.

After reading this book and comparing it to Dr. Arem's book The Thyroid Solution and another book for Graves Disease called Graves Disease; A Practical Handbook; I found this book to be lacking in how it was presented, ease in understanding and resourcefullness.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
This is a clear, easy-to-read introduction to the body-mind theory behind Hanna's "Somatics" system, and how the system works in practice. The anecdotes he tells are engaging, and I especially liked his insistencethat the process is a collaboration:the practitioner isn't a"healer" so much as a teacher, and healing takes place becausethe sufferer re-learns how to use the forgotten parts of his/her body.Ialso found his explanation of the "soma" concept veryenlightening:too many thinkers (even those of the "New Age"persuasion) promote the view that we are spirits trapped in bodies and thatwe should hence adopt a "mind over matter" philosophy.Hanna, bycontrast, insists that the two are interdependent and that what happens toone affects the other -- in both directions. He points out that this ideais reflected in Zen Buddhism, yoga, and other Eastern philosophies.(Western thinkers have tended to misunderstand it, possibly because of themind-vs-body dichotomy in Christian thought, but Hanna clarifies the matternicely.)I also found his explanation of the Feldenkrais system and itsrelationship to other methods of bodywork (such as Alexander) very useful. Although some of the research he cites is a little outdated now, nothing hesays is (to my knowledge) contradicted by recent studies.Despite its age, this is still a very useful book for anyone interested in the mind-bodyrelationship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This was a good book
A comprehensive collection of current and on-going research, treatments and case studies, this amazingly small book provides a great summary of everything you will read about Parkinson's in random web searches. The best part is that it is completely comprehensible for the lay person.I especially recommend this book for family members such as parents and siblings who may not be involved in day to day care-partnering with the Parkinson's Patient, but who may want to have an understanding of what is happening (and what is going to happen) to their family member.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's
Parkinson's is a movement disorder which affects 500,000 people in the US and adds thousands of new cases annually, but despite its prevalence, families often have little resources to guide them in considering treatment options, drug trail potentials, family dynamics, and disruptions and adjustments to daily living. Parkinson's Disease And The Family: A New Guide addresses all manner of family concerns and is a top pick for this reason, going where competitors do not in addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's. Especially appropriate for the non-specialist general reader, Parkinson's Disease And The Family is ideal for community libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!
Help! This book made me into the class "know it all". I'm in school starting my second career and I need to know anatomy. I was suppose to learn it for my first career but it never stuck. After reading Dr. Dimon's book I'm finding I know more than I thought I could know and it has been so easy. I'm begining to understand the intelligence of our design and the names of all the bones and muscles just flow out or me, (and I haven't even made an effort to memorized them).

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Book on Anatomy
In "Anatomy of the Moving Body," Theodore Dimon, Jr. approaches his subject from a unique and focused perspective.By presenting anatomy in terms of function and evolutionary development and limiting his exploration to the neuromuscular system, Dimon has produced a book that is both user-friendly and fascinating. He manages the neat trick of lending clarity to this majestic subject while avoiding the pitfall of oversimplification.Of special interest in this regard is thelight beam he shines into the murky shadows of intimidating anatomical terminology, showing the reader that there's nothing there to fear.5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifying Anatomy
Dr. Dimon has written a clear and concise book demystifyinganatomy--I especially enjoyed learning the meanings of the Latin terms.A must for anyone interested in how we are designed for moving. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for anyone who has ever been lost in the healthcare system.
This book is an excellent layperson's reference to the jargon of medicine and the byzantine protocols of the hospital experience. Dr. Pettus discusses the most common lab tests and medical and diagnostic procedures, how they are performed, and most importantly, what the heck they are for. It can often seem as though an endless series of tests are performed to no end at all. A knowledgable patient ( and family) can actally add needed direction to medical care, toward achieving a true partnership with healthcare providers. I recommend this book to all as a registered critical care nurse. I keep a copy at the desk at work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aging is never the problem ... as long as you stay in top form
"Face it" - you get older every day because the clock marches forward. Aging and getting on in years is not the problem. BUT ... accumulating wisdom doesn't have to show on your face! Thanks to advancements in cosmetic procedures, diet and exercise, facial toning exercises, lifestyle, etc ... aging gracefully doesn't have to look like a shriveled up flower. Cosmetic surgery done within reason is a great option to keep feeling your best, as long as you don't confuse physical beauty with self-worth, it makes sense to look as young as you feel. You won't look 20 when you are 50 ... but you will look your best.

4-0 out of 5 stars must have
after researching dr.kotler and finding out how good he was,i went on amazon and found his book and all of the great reviews.being in a new state and not knowing anyone or anything i needed all of the help i could get.what a great result!you absolutely must read this book before doing anything.i am now 16 days post surgery and i am very pleased.i had a rhino and an upper eyelid.the only reason i gave the book a 4 rating is because the pain and healing are really underplayed by everyone including dr. kotler.although everyone is differant it was very painful and healing is slow.but i have a perfect nose and my eyes are great.you must,i repeat must read this book before having surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than a $100 psychopharmacology text
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in getting real facts about psychoactive drugs.Don't be fooled by the low price or the fact that it is "nontechnical."(All that means is that psychiatrists can read it without digging though their biochem notes!)5-0 out of 5 stars An accessible balanced approach to drug action

Editorial Review

The boom in nutritional supplements has been bewildering to most health-conscious people. One camp, made up mostly of traditional scientistsand nutritionists, says that supplements are unnecessary, that you can get all the nutrients you need from a well-balanced diet. Then there's the group that says a normal diet can't supply all the super-duper stuff that researchers of varying degrees of credibility discover on a regular basis. Which set is right? Earl Mindell, for one, is solidly in the latter, recommending virtually everything you'll find on the shelves of your neighborhood nutrition store. He answers questions you might have about supplements you've heard of but don't understand, and he explains what all the excitement (if any) is about. From DHEA to cat's claw, bovine tracheal cartilage to chromium picolinate, he endorses all. ... Read more

Dr Mindell proves once again that he is on the cutting edge in nutrition...Dr Mindell is years ahead of any other nutritional author.5-0 out of 5 stars Valable health information which goes beyond vitamins.
Earl Mindell is justly famous for his best-selling book Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible (Currently available as Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible for the 21st Century). Thousands -- perhaps even millions -- of people have strengthened their health and even extended their lives with the information contained in Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible. Now Dr. Mindell has written an equally well-written and authoritive book which discusses dozens of nutritional supplements which are not normally covered in books on vitamins. Many ofthe supplements discussed in this new book -- including Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and DHA, to name a few -- are every bit as important to human health as vitamins are. If you are seriously interested in learning about the broad scope of nutritional supplements which are currently available you will not want to be without this book. ... Read more

This book has a rather unique layout that actually makes it easier to use than most similar books. The first part of the book focuses on symptoms. You look up your primary symptom, and then look to see if there are associated symptoms that match yours. If you have a match of symptoms then you read the different possible diagnosis for those symptoms and the distinguishing features of each diagnosis. The best way to illustrate how easy it is to use an example.Suppose you see some blood in your urine. You look up "Blood in the urine" and find that there are two subdivisions - with urinary difficulty or incontinence, without urinary difficulty or incontinence. If there is no urinary difficulty or incontinence then there are five possible diagnoses provided. Each of these five provides distinguishing features so you can easily figure out if you match one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensibly scientific
This book is sensibly scientific.5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, comprehensive book
This is the natural health book no one should be without. The author writes compassionately and comprehensively about over 300 conditions. He seems to have the attitude "If this medicine didn't work for you, here's something that will." I know we will be using this book for a long time to come.
