2-0 out of 5 stars mediocre
From a recovery point of view, this book will not change your program or anything. It's one of those quick knock-offs that someone did when they needed money. I liked Mel B's work on "Pass It On" and the book about Ebby, but she really sold short on this one. You could simply read the chapter titles in this book and you've read the whole thing. And while vaguely illustrating her points, Mel wanders off into conjecture and personal opinion, and admits that's what she's doing!

5-0 out of 5 stars What Gems of Truth I Gleaned from this Insightful Book!
The grief implicit in alcoholism and other addictions is treated gently in this look at how God/Christianity influenced the A.A. Groups of the past, and continues to do so today. This is an honest, clear-headed, and carefully researched book well worth reading. I loved this book from page one!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Study of Early AA and Christian Influences
Dick B. has performed a great service in writing this guide to early A.A. Groups and conducting similar groups today. He puts in print what many of us have recognised as the biblical and Christian roots in the 12 Steps and the Serenity Prayer. He shows how the early meetings were conducted and gives guidance for conducting similar meetings today; such as Serenity Groups.

5-0 out of 5 stars good relationship book
First, let be honest upfront -- I looked over this book while it was being written and the concerns I raised then were dealt with by the author so I have nothing negative to say about this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Insightful Perspective
Anyone seeking greater self-awareness and/or a deeper understanding of the complexity of BDSM relationships can learn a great deal from "Partners in Power." No matter whether one is a neophyte to BDSM or an experienced player, the truth is that life offers so many opportunities to continue learning and exploring, and it is wonderful to have resources such as this book to edify, to enlighten and to guide. 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Thoughts
Throughout this book, I found myself agreeing with a lot of what Jack has to say. His words resonate with my philosophies about BDSM. As some of you know, he has a weekly email column called "Leather Views" and reading this book in some ways is like an extended version of one of his column. His writing is always entertaining and usually thought-provoking, as is this book.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Catholic book that's afraid to be Catholic!
When I first heard about Matt Talbot I was fascinated. This was a saint I could relate to! An ordinary working-class man who struggled with alcohol and substituted a saintly life for drinking! But when I started to read this book, I grew disapointed. Matt Talbot was Catholic, and the author of this book is Catholic, but the author goes out of his way to "strip down" everything and make the book appealling to non-Catholic Christians (minimize discussion of Mary, etc). In doing this, the author strips away what made Matt Talbot's life fascinating; his devotion to his CATHOLIC (not non-denominational Christian) faith. What a let-down.

5-0 out of 5 stars What I have been looking for!
After almost 3 years in A.A., I was happy to see this book come out because I could not deal with A.A.'s concept of "God as we understand him" anymore.I would never sponsor anybody in A.A. because I had no intentions of telling them to "choose a god of your understanding".To me this is nothing more than suggesting that somebody create God in their own image and encouraging them to partake in idolatry. This book gave me what I needed to leave A.A. with confidence.5-0 out of 5 stars Spirits and the Spirit
You won't get any dreary "Here's how I finally hit bottom" tales from this book by an alcoholic who stopped drinking more than 15 years ago. Instead, Philip Maynard lets us look into the mind of the alcoholic. According to Maynard, drinking provided a release from daily stress and the feeling of being lifted "above the world" to a realm of unsurpassed pleasure and self-knowledge. The drinker is, in effect, "fooled into believing he has hit on the key to an easy transcendence over the world."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful, useful guide for both individuals and groups
Library Journal: "Schnarr's encouraging insights are illuminated by his own honest struggles with personal failure and addiction." Wisconsin Bookwatch: "Spiritual Recovery . . . charts a path to freedom from unconscious compulsions born of guilt, fear, anger, want and resentment. . . . Grant Schnarr uses lively, compelling anecdotes to show how to recognize and break free from addictive thoughts and behaviors."

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide to growing spiritually
Grant Schnarr provides the reader with a slightly altered version of the 12 step program begun by Alcoholics Anonymous. The guide, while it demands the reader to be humbled and to really examine their greatest faults, is a wonderful support for anyone wishing to grow spiritually. It is difficult to admit one's less likable traits, but this guide helps the reader do this without making him or her feel horrible about themselves.Very helpful and definitely worth reading for anybody, not just those in recovery. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!
I was really disappointed when I read this book.If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book.It tells you the same thing. It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke! There's no way I can stick to something like that.I would starve too death!
1-0 out of 5 stars Traditional 12 step approach
After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review.I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating. It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program. While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself.Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging. In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again.I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling.I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book.I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was.If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere. The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
What a disappointment! The authors’ answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your “trigger” foods are from your diet. Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life. That’s hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food. They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of “safe” food available to you at all times.Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer! ...
