5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up! Frank Minirth, Les Carter
This book has been an amazing gift for me. I'm a Christian who thought I knew how to forgive until I was offended beyond my wildest dreams and struggled with anger, bitterness and confusion that led me to read the book. The order of chapters is such that a concept in one chapter builds up to the next. The first 3 chapters allows one to examine the wrong that has been done and acknowledge it for what it is; a violation against one's convictions, something hurtful. There are great tips that allow one to examine and accept feelings of anger and disappointment. The chapters that follow give guidance on how to safely release the negative feelings, how to give up bitterness, give up judging the wrongdoer. There's even a chapter on how to confront if that's needed. The beauty of the book is the acknowledgement of ones feelings, explaining why we need to allow ourselves to be angry and grieve and eventually having dealt with our feelings, the book empowers us with the knowledge that first forgiveness is a choice and it then offers practical tips on how to do it. One of the most annoying things for me is being put down or minimized. The book offers tips on how to deal with that by embracing equality, being assertive and embracing humility. The case studies were excellent and in most cases I could relate to them and it made the book even more interesting.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting definitions of "scholarship" and "credible"...
This is a review of a review... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Reference to God and Christ... Loses Credibility
There are some good psychological explanations of the necessary steps towards forgiveness. However, I found the book to have too much reference to God; thereby, losing all scholarly credibility.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An innovative guide and "reader friendly" introduction to self-discovery and contentment
There Are No Mistakes: Becoming Comfortable With Life As It Is, Not As It "Should" Be by Eleanor Wiley with the assistance of Caroline Pincus is an informed and inspiring collection of practical and intuitive commentaries focused on the goal of achieving an overall betterment of self and self-perception. Introducing readers to diverse but effective tactics and strategies, There Are No Mistakes provides knowledgeable guidelines for knowing where you came from, knowing your own personal story; accepting yourself; owning your own pain, hurt, and vulnerability; laughing at yourself; finding community; taking care of yourself; giving yourself permission to change your mind; willingness to fall apart and put yourself back together again;, creating a self help "tool box"; and just going with the flow. An innovative guide and "reader friendly" introduction to self-discovery and contentment, There Are No Mistakes is very strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Ready to Grow
This isn't a book for the timid. It's for those who want to go deep, to grow, to expand. It's a challenging journey into the last frontier -- our own selves, our wounds, our fears and shed light in the old darkness in order to come out the other side and discover how unique and lovable we really are. Great workbook.Get ready to feel uncomfortable, but it's worth the effort. It's not something you're going to hurry through. It's an on-going process

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Way Out
This is a clearly written step-by-step guide for healing. The 12-steps programs have clearly demonstrated over the past several decades, a superior track record of helping individuals overcome their problems whether it be alcoholism, overeating, codependency etc.

Overall this book was great for prompting a writing workshop for myself & 6 recovering adults whose 12-step involvement varied (ie. ACoA, AA, CodA, & combo). We began using it for a weekly 2 hour Sunday AM writing workshop meeting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Eleventh Step Program For Christians In Recovery
It has often been remarked that there seems to be some correspondence between the principles of the Twelve Steps of AA and parts of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.Few if any books or articles have sought to explicitate that correspondence between the two with the thoroughness of this text of Harbaugh. As a Jesuit and Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor, he is well acquainted and involved in both guiding people through the Spiritual Exercises and counseling those in recovery. His treatment uncovers whatever relationship exists between the spiritual dynamics of the two texts.Sometimes the relationships are profound and enlightening, occasionally they are merely superficial and accommodating. For the student of the Exercises these latter instances may seem forced, for the person in recovery it will be an acceptable use offamiliar and comfortable language. The Exercises are a series of meditations that in its most concentrated form take about 30 full days, but for a person with limited time available they can be adapted to a 12 month period, which is what Harbaugh does.He suggests the 52 meditations be taken one week at a time (though one is free to give more or less time to each), and wisely urges that they be done with the help of a spiritual director, sponsor or others. The book is a guide for prayer, but even a quick read could be informative and profitable. The Exercises are quintessentially Christian, and so Harbough's text is meant for use by Christians in recovery. It goes beyond the principles of AA, but enlightens the Christian content of the Exercises with AA language, principles and parallels to the fullest extent possible. While one need not be in recovery to use this book for prayer, it is a fine way for someone in recovery to work the Eleventh Step.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fan of the Twelve Steps
I have been in 12-Step work for almost 28 years, beginning December 13, 1972.I have come to believe that you are either moving away from youraddiction or that you are moving toward your addiction.Staying on aplateau for very long is dangerous to maintaining spiritual progress.Thisbook was instrumental in moving me from being stuck in the spiritual mud,so to speak.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book is our text for JACS meetings
A group of us recently organized within the Jewish community of Phoenix to start a local chapter of JACS, Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Addicted Persons, and Significant Others. We use this book as our text. A brief description of the JACS organization, and its relationship to and with other 12-Step programs is included in the Afterward section. Our group has grown steadily week to week, using "Twelve Steps" as both a source of inspiration and as an educational tool. It is not a replacement for other 12-Step programs, and doesn't try to be. Each chapter is devoted to one of the 12 principles, a concept that is not in the Big Book of AA, but which often triggers the introspection and self-awareness that is crucial to persons in recovery. Many Jews in our group are people who felt uncomfortable in traditional 12-Step meetings, for many, often different, reasons. This book reaches out to those people especially, helps ease their suffering, and brings all of us closer, ending the isolation which is so devestating. People get to recovery through many paths. We have found "Twelve Jewish Steps" to be both inspiring and community-building. So far, we've bought 24 books and we continue to need more. People use this book, reading it over and over. It increases compassion, understanding, and hope in both the person in recovery and in his/her family. There is no higher praise I can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important resource for the recovering addict
Although the twelve step program of recovery from alcoholism and addiction was developed by religious Christians, these programs are nondenominational and, in fact, adhere to key tenants of Judaism. The type of introspection, righting of wrongs, and doing better in the future are part of the Jewish process of teshuva which means "return" and is the Jewish way to repentance. Rabbi Olitzky and Dr. Copans set forth this process, offering meditations, aphorisms, psalms and prayers relevant to each of the twelve steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Jewish contribution to Jewish 12 step spirituality
This book is designed for all those who want help from Jewish tradition in their struggle in recovery from alcohol and other addictions. It provides a Jewish context for Jews in recovery and reminds others of their Jewishroots. It dares to take people where they have never gone before! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A gift from my sister.
This book was a christmas gift from my sister. Journey to the well helped me travel down a well worn road. You have already thought about the things that she has written about your spiritual journey, but with how much perspective. Vashti's book helped me to reflect on my image in the well. Looking at myself objectively in the well, I can change things I dont want to see.

4-0 out of 5 stars Food for the Spirit
I have been enriched by reading this book by Bishop McKenzie. It came to my attention as a recommended reading posted at my school, Trinity College of D.C.Not aware of Bishop McKenzie, I was intrigued by the summary of this book and decided to read it. What a tremendous blessing. As I read it, I realized that so many women travel often to the well in our daily lives.Just trying our best, no matter how painful, to do what we can until things get better. Like the Samarian woman at the well, we yearned for something different in our lives that would free us from many of the cultural, societal, and spiritual bonds that bind us. Dr. Mckenzie reminds us systematically through the additional Biblical references, exercises, and journal assignments that support this blessed encounter that we are waiting for our opportunity to meet Jesus at the well. Pausing to answer this blessed stranger's questions and boldly asking questions of Him healed her. Reading this book, we are also healed. I encourage women from all walks of life, age or religion to read this book. Like the Samarian woman who met Jesus at the well, you, too will find your voice. through His grace be healed to go forth and tell everyone of the man you just met who knew everything about you and loves you dearly.Peace

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique format, conversational tone.
Different from other "day by day guides," this book features a daily "dialogue" between sponsor and sponsee. The days are arranged one, two, three, etc., and begin with a quote. The quotes aregreat, from Joan Baez to Marilyn Monroe. Next is an issue or question fromthe sponsor, followed bya reply from the sponsee. This is a great bookfor anyone in their first (or any, really) year of recovery. The tone isnot preachy or condescending, as can be the case with many books of thisgenre, but calm, warm and sometimes witty. An excellent appendix isprovided in the back of the book, and the index is complete and helpful. ... Read more

I was really excited to read this book after hearing someone talk about it.I looked forward to an insight on Bill's struggle with depression and also hearing the guidance he received from Father Dowling. In that way, the book did not disappoint. The letters are great. My complaint is the way this book is written.I am an avid reader, yet this book makes very little sense!I do not understand the authors point, his interpretations, why he even grouped sections of letters together. He doesn't seem to have a theme, that I can see.I still think this book is worth having in your collection, just for the letters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help To Me
This book was very helpful to me.Just reading it seems to cause one's anxious thoughts to subside, as the book describes the causes and physical aspects of a panic attack and helps the reader to identify the process and isolate it as an objective physical and mental phenomenon which can be dealt with rationally using simple techniques described in the book. There are also questions to guide the reader to identify aspects of their personal and family history that may be contributing to the anxiety and panic attacks, and it includes information about standard treatments and medications for anxiety.
4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve anxiety and panic; please read review!
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as it has changed mine.

This was a very interesting book.Several forms of Earth energies are covered. There is an emphasis on the system of energy leys in Scotland. The author proposes that the ability to detect such energies is inherent in the human body.He used dowsing rods to follow the leys all over the Scottish countryside.5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful, metaphysical spiritual guide
Collaboratively written by David Cowan and Chris Arnold, Ley Lines And Earth Energies is a seminal and original guide to the energies of the Earth itself, and how those energies affect human health and well-being, as well as the effects such things have had in creating "sacred" places that simply feel special. A powerful, metaphysical spiritual guide to tapping into the infinite bounty of nature, and illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps, Ley Lines And Earth Energies is a welcome and very special addition to metaphysics, geology, and Earth Studies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, CONCISE,ELEGANT Personal witness on the 12 steps
According to the publisher Fr. Fred is 50 years a jesiut priest,an a member of alcoholics anonymous for almost 40 years. This very well written{especially when you consider they are simply transcriptes of talks],clear rendering of the 12 steps. A great deal of the literature on the 12 steps takes a teacher-student dialogue approach, whereas fr. fred seems to be far more humble, and so much more effective. He breaks down each step chapter by chapetr[his 3rd step,6th and 7th are worth thr price of the book alone].His language is VERY SIMPLE AND CLEAR.I have avidly read almost everything that i can get on the 12 steps, and i agree with the previous reviewer, this is essentila, and BY FAR AND AWAY THE BEST BOOK ON THE 12 STEPs i have read.No preaching, no religion,no oldtimer nostagia[which, unfortunately clutters up some other books.}10 stars,20 stars. This is life affirming stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the 12 steps i have encountered
This is a simple, brilliant explanation of the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous.Father Fred explains the steps in clean plain prose[though the ist edition is littered with typos].His explanation of the 2nd step isparticularly excellent, though after a rather slow ist step introduction, each of the steps are magnificent. Pardon the hyperbole, but this is one ofthe few necessary books I own. I have given out at LEAST 50 copies of thisbook, and I have found 1,1 person who did not find it veryuseful.Anyone, especially those in A. a. ,will find it 's clarity andbrevity welcome. Do not be put off by the title,it is not a sectarianreligious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for anyone who is seeking wholeness.
Sometimes book titles are deceiving. For example: I am not an alcoholic, so I would not usually pick up a book that might seem to deal with that illness. The old axiom "don't judge a book by its cover" fitsreally well here. No one person in this world is free from problems. Thesemay come in various packages such as addicitons, mental illness, depression, etc. However, if we strip away the outside package, the humancondition is the same across the board. Pain is pain. Suffering issuffering. These need to be dealt with, and Fr. Fred's sharings on each ofthe 12 steps of AA is a most valuable tool to help anyone, not just thosewith addictions. It has helped me to look at the situations in my lifesquarely in the face and realize that I don't have to live with them anymore. Read it. Ponder it. Read it again and again. It will become a mostvaluable part of your life. It will empower you to change. It will help youfind wholeness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Universal 12-Step Program
I have been with two therapist over the past eight years. One experience was for five years with a group of men recovering from childhood sexual abuse.I left therapy thinking I was healed in 1999.I found Dr. Martin Sandry Midwest Psychological Healthcare in a phone book and decided to begin therapy again in 2000.He has been working with me for almost two years.I have read and rereadthe book "The Universal 12-Step Program".Martin Sandry and Kenneth Peiser have written a very down to earth book describing how to gain control of your thoughts by changing your belief system. They have used Albert Ellis's REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy) model.THIS HAS CHANGED MY LIFE! I never thought I could change the way I felt about traumatic events.Dr. Martin Sandry is a GENIUS!He has helped me to overcome my sexual addiction.I never thought I could heal from so many emotions and by using the tools in this book, I am free and peace with myself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Effective for a Serious Problem
After reading The Universal 12-Step Program: How to Overcome Any Addiction and Win!, I was genuinely pleased to see how clearly it is written in a general sense, but I am very pleased to see how the authors, Peiser andSandry, have soundly explained the traditional twelve steps from acognitive-behavioral viewpoint. In these years of mis-managed medicalcare, this book is a godsend to those addicted human beings who admit theirproblem and have the determination to work at what they deserve; namely, agood chance to change their lives and to win.5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition
A remarkable book addressed to both individuals seeking treatment for addictions and to professionals seeking alternate methods.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Joe McQ!
I strongly disagree with the person who gave Joe one star and criticized him!I have met him personally, sat in his lectures and read his books several time. How can you possibly discourage those seeking recovery to avoid his wonderful books?Perhaps you are far ahead in your recovery, but there are those of us who definitely need Joe and his wisdom.I came in to buy several copies of The Steps We Took for friends of mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I can't recommend this book enough; it's even better than "The Steps We Took". 3-0 out of 5 stars Sponsorship Starter

5-0 out of 5 stars Positive Change
I have to say that I have been around the 12 Step program for many years... both my parents had severe drinking problems... recovery was went through many times... but they never "worked" a program... as Iwatched their problems, felt the pain of their problems... and lived withthe side effects of them... I never deeply examined what "I"could change. This book helped me see where "I" have to makechanges... that the only person I can control is me... I reccommend thisbook as just a basic format for life! ... Read more
