1-0 out of 5 stars no stars would be too much
if god is what you want, this is the book for you. If is a way to seperate your self from the horror of alcohol abuse, look else where. This is a book review, not a whos right or wrong blog. After reading this book, I have deducted that the teachings are cult like and support no scientific fact. The version of the book has been updated over time, but still contains the premise originally written over 69 years ago. 69 years? You are going to treat a behavior problem with a technique that old? Its like cutting off your leg to treat a broken ankle. Things have changed, along with the treatment of substance abuse. About the authors, You have the internet USE IT. William Wilson, writing the book was going through withdrawls and under the influence of a drug called belladonna. Any one would report "seeing god" under those circumstances. Wilson was also unfaithfull to his wife, with new members of AA, this is called 13th stepping. Most of all he plagerised other authors to develop his program. The Steps were stolen from a man named Buchman, who wanted control through his religous beliefs, (the Oxford Group) and was a Hitler supporter. Please, if you are getting mad at my review, Check the internet or other books that support my statements.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book, but I can't believe the price.
I'm in AA, and was just perusing the Amazon pages.I came upon the Big Book, and was totally amazed at the price they're charging. At ouR AA group, we sell the Big Book for $6.00, $6.50 for the large print.Go to a meeting, sit & listen, and then go buy it there. It'll save you a ton of money, and you might hear something that sounds familiar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing philosophy of life
This book is amazing. It has a lot to offer anyone, not just alcoholics, as a philosophy for living. If you strip away all the specifics about drinking and about "God," the _point_ of the book is very Buddhist in a way, very Christlike (as opposed to Christian): take care of the plank in your own eye.Live and let live, stop trying to control others, accept the world rather than trying to control it, don't argue, and so on.Whether you believe in "God" or not, the philosophy of not struggling against the world is beautiful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Book for Anyone Involved in the 12 Steps
This book is truly a must have, inspiring, comprehensive, and enlightening guide through the 12 steps within any recovery program.I have used this with countless clients in therapy and have had nothing but great results. This book is highly recommended for all clinicians and anybody wising to grow in the 12 step process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stronger for Addicts than Co-Addicts?
Patrick Carnes has been a grounder-breaker in every sense concerning sexual addiction. I feel ambivalent about this offering, however. I think on the whole it's a stronger book for addicts than for codependents. The material seems to revolve around addiction with co-addiction serving as an afterthought, both figuratively and literally. As a recovering codependent, I yearn for materials that address my issues head-on instead of relating me to the addicts in my life. Something about this material makes me feel second-class and doesn't inspire me to go as deeply as I could.
4-0 out of 5 stars SAA of Tulsa
The primary workbook for our Fellowship in Tulsa. We've also tried 4 others, which are good, but have come back to this one.Sometimes a little clinical, but very thorough.Should be done with the guidance of a sponsor.Just "surrender" to following the book and results WILL come.Prepare to spend several months to really examine yourself, do the writings, and truly internalize the Steps. Can't be rushed, yet can't procrastinate.Carnes is really the "guru" on this topic. We've read most of his books, and their just great. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It Works if you Work It!
The steps in this book work, if you do what they suggest!
5-0 out of 5 stars "Don't confuse" ... reply
To the person who wrote "don't confuse AA with religion,"I think it is you who should reread the book. The book would never call someone "ignorant" who thinks AA is religion. It goes on and on about how DIFFICULT IT IS to accept that you are powerless over alcohol and that only by giving yourself over to a "higher power" will you get better. It's hardly "ignorant" to feel that way, such people simply are not "ready" for the AA "message."
4-0 out of 5 stars DON'T CONFUSE AL-ANON WITH RELIGION
The negative comments left by a few are fairly ignorant, in that Al-anon is NOT a religion NOR does it EVER suggest that a person BE religous in order for the program to work.It asks people to be SPIRITUAL, which is entirely different. Those who don't understand what this book is about (which IS part of the process by the way) should GO to an Al-Anon meeting and get themselves educated, instead of JUST reading a book and then discounting the entire program and book out of ignorance. They are doing themselves AND their loved-one a HUGE disservice! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A woman's Way is a terrific guide
A Woman's Way Through the twelve steps workbook is a great tool to accompanyStephanie Covington's book "A Womans Guide through the Twelve Steps. The questions are insightful and to the point without being overwhelming.I have found these two books to be an immeasurable asset to working the twelve steps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heads Up Ladies!
This is definitely a head's up and listen up for women in recovery....using this in conjunction with "A Womans' Way Through the Twelve Steps" is a sure way to add to any other 12 step program that you may be using.I am a person who has been in recovery for 10 years, and found that many women's issues were not being addressed and this combination is an absolute winner. It can be used by yourself, working with a sponsor or in a group ..some wonderful "aha's" have been experienced and so many women helped in this process.Read it...do it....you won't be sorry. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars if god is what you want.
if god is what you want, this is the book for you. If is a way to seperate your self from the horror of alcohol abuse, look else where. By reading the previous reviews, all I see is a bunch of name calling. AA members learn to seperate themselves from the so called NORMIES, and only find understanding through surrounding themselves with other alcoholics. This upsets them, and leads to the attacks you read here. Understand, this is a book review, not a whos right or wrong blog. After reading this book, I have deducted that the teachings are cult like and support no scientific fact. The version of the book has been updated over time, butstill contains the premise originally written over 69 years ago. 69 years? You are going to treat a behavior problem with a technique that old? 5-0 out of 5 stars A desire to stop drinking, readiness at the bottom and the application of these TENETS has kept me sober for over 31 years.
Have just ordered another copy of "The Big Book" as mine has about worn out. Alcoholics Anonymous - the book and program together have stood the test of time. Many tens of thousands of people have become sober long term by keeping the "Big Book" handy. Alcoholics Anonymous literally saved my life. It is a blueprint for living that could benefit anyone. The seriousness of Alcoholism can be identified as an insidious killer of person, family, friends, work reltionships and more. Keep the book around - it can work for you!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Showing Its Age
Yes, the spiritual ideas encompassed in this book are timeless. In fact, all the principles within are found in any mainstream religion. It has been extrodinarily helpful to me in transforming my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from Mara (Illusion)
This is an interesting dimension on the 12-steps which were Christian in origin and spiritual in nature. One Breath at a Time is a Buddhist slant on the one day at a time approach in recovery. One primary lesson from Buddhist philosophy is that attachment and craving are at the root of suffering. Addiction is both an attachment and a craving whose compulsions take over and trap an individual in an endless cycle. Whether the addiction is to a substance or a behavior the illusion that it frees the person from pain is what mara is ... a mirage promising bounties that are empty. So ... for those who are interested in other perspectives of recovery - this is one read to consider.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended
This book is well written and easy to read.I relapsed with 13+ years in a 12 step program and having a difficult time getting reconnected. As someone with Buddhist leanings who never quite bridged the gap between the steps and Buddhism I found this book to be of great help.If you are even remotely interested in working the 12 steps from a Buddhist perspective I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Honesty, responsibility, and respect
I was able to refresh my memory, which is required, in not being an enabler, being responsable for my actions and respecting myself again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another way to work the Steps!
This time around I'm addressing some core issues and this book is just perfect for where I'm at.It provides a refreshing perspective that complements and supplements ANY other 12 Step program. If you want to go a little bit deeper than the way you usually work the Steps, without complicated or excessive formats, this book is so worth your time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, honest and life-changing
Melody Beattie's books are all incredibly honest and forthright. You can see yourself and your own behaviors in her words - she comes right to the heart of the matter, over and over again. She discusses the nuances of co-dependency in such a way that the reader can take something valuable from every page. This book helps the reader refocus on what is going on and what is important in life. An indispensable guide to recognizing co-dependent behaviors and choosing to leave them behind. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not talking about general sponsorship
I got disappointed when i receive this book becasue i was looking for a book to know how can i get sponsor for my NGO but i suddenly find this book is about program and things that is not related to my issue, when i read the Contents online i find general words about sponsorship but when i get the book and read inside it i find it is talking about special program, i tried to move it back to amazon but i am now egypt and i find the cost of sending will be maximum that the book, so i just keep the book and keep disapointed too, nothing wll make me satisfied unless amazon send me book about what i want for free and not get this book back becasue i will ..... it

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for Sponsors and Sponsees
I read this book after reading "A Sponsorship Guide for 12-Step Programs" by M.T.Both are very good books. The book by M.T. offers a more casual approach, IMO, to Sponsorship than does this book by Hamilton B.It also offers a variety of viewpoints."Twelve Step Sponsorship: How It Works" gives very specific and direct answers to many questions that Sponsors and Sponsees have about their Fellowship and how to maintain a Sponsor/Sponsee relationship while working all of the 12 Steps together. The second half of the book does present a meeting study guide for a Sponsor to use, with suggested readings for the Sponsee, suggested questions, and even offers a discussion of the questions the Sponsee should answer prior to a meeting with the Sponsor and at the meeting. As far as a manual for a Sponsor of any 12 Step program, this is the book to use.The author primarily targets those in AA, but is very sensitive to the needs of those in other recovery programs and the Appendix includes the 12 Steps of other Fellowship Groups.I can highly recommend this book, which also gives guidance on how you, the Sponsor, will know when your Sponsee has completed a Step and how to procede with them to the next step.Hamilton B. also offers advice on how to help your Sponsee move to the next step if they become reluctant to move to the next step.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for sponsors in any 12 Step program
This book is very useful and easy to understand. It's very helpful and has documented years of success in sponsoring other who are in recovery.THe author shares his "experience, strength and hope" in this practical guide to working the 12 Steps. It's adaptable to any 12 Step program.I use it often and continue to find answers to questions as a re-read and study the contents. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 12 Steps for Christians
Have purchased many of this title for a prison Bible Study group I do volunteer work with. Although I haven't personally read it, the members of the study group speak highly of it and frequently request more copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for Christians
As an educator and a therapist, I have recommended this book to my Christian clients/patients and students. My clients report that the book has enhanced their recovery as they can tie their Step work to Biblical teachings. My students, particularly those who are not in recovery but are learning about substance abuse, have reported that the text has given them a base from which to understand the Steps more deeply and allowed them to feel more comfortable about their ability to use the Steps in their ministries.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Twelve Steps for Christians
My husband and I previously read this book and were very impressed. We are both in recovery and were avid believers in Jesus Christ. All of the traditional recovery books were vague in their spirituality, and we could relate and grow from this book.We currently use this book in our ministry, which is a recovery ministry in our church. We see many other people being blessed from it as well.I think people that have not had to deal with different addictions/bondages in their lives, could benefit from the steps/tools that are available in this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Keep coming back -- to "Came To Believe"
I dip into this AA World Services publication daily. I find it best to read one story at a sitting and reflect on the comments and experience of the recovering person -- most of the short reflections are peoples'spiritual experiences in recovery and they range from the "bolt oflightening" to the slow emergence of everyday spirituality. Keep itwith your morning or evening meditation book(s) and dip into it. You'll"keep coming back." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Has helped 100's
We have been using this book for at least 10 years in dozens of groups. We have used it in home based small groups and also at our church. We don't do the activities, but do discuss all the questions and read it aloud in the group. We will be starting at least two new groups in the fall using this book.We have seen lives change by going through the questions. It is wonderful and I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars 12 Step Process
As an AOD counselor, I routinely suggest 12 step process to my clients. For those with a Christian background, the Spiritual Journey Workbook, combined with the Recovery Bible, is a very effective path, and many clients have benefited from this pprocess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recovery is For Christians Only
Que Dommage! It seems that this book does not deal with anything spiritual, that is unless you are a Christian! It almost appears that no one who wrote this book read Bill's Big Book.Yes, we all know where the 12 steps originated from the Oxford group, but please understand that the beauty and wisdom of this way of life removed the religiosity, turning the concepts of sin into making ammends. When the first page of this book clearly states that it is for those who believe in Jesus Christ, although I may believe, I know it has become an "Exclusive" program and has nothing to do with my own personal spiritual recovery using the 12 steps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Text of SCA, not SAA
Just as claraification: This book was written by anonymous members of the group Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (SCA) and is the basic text of that group.I am a member of SCA and I have found this book extremely helpful.I would recommend it to anyone, both on the basis of a standalone book and and a possible introduction to what SCA is about.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not the basic text of SAA
I was checking out some recovery books on Amazon and noticed this review about "Hope and Recovery".I'm a member of Sex Addicts Anonymous and "Hope and Reovery" IS NOT the basic text of that fellowship. It is read, but it's not the basic text.If you read the Steps and Traditions in the book, and really the rest of the book, nowhere is Sex Addicts Anonymous ever mentioned in those pages.I'm not saying "don't read Hope and Recovery," I just want to make it clear that it's not the basic text of SAA.5-0 out of 5 stars A very in-depth tool book of recovery for sexual addiction.
Hope & Recovery is the current basic text of SAA (Sex Addicts Anomyous, a twelve-step group for sexually recovering people). The book is designed for individuals who feel that they are sexually compusive and are looking for information on the addictive disease and "tools" to use to become and remain free from sexual addiction. Each of the twelve steps is explained in detail on how they can be lived daily for sexual recovery. A number of individuals tell their own experiences of how they lived their disease, discovered the hope of the program, and how they are currently living a life of recovery. The book is well written, sensitive, hopeful, and a continual must read through the journey of recovery. Definately Hope & Recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is life altering if you are ready to recover
I was shocked to see that there were actually negative reviews on this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Food is not alcohol
I spent years going to OA meetings, diligently working the program and wondering why I was still a hopeless victim of food cravings.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 12 Step Companion Book
Being in recovery in OA for 6 years and reading the OA and AA 12 & 12's NUMEROUS times, I was looing for something new and fresh to read. This book truly fit the bill. The author really breaks the steps down intomany subcategories and delves into issues deeply. Not a substituute forthe AA or OA 12 & 12 by any means, but a great "study aid" tothe 12 steps. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Womens way through the 12 steps
This is a great starter book for any women, in any type of recovery. This is my third copy of this book in twelve years I use it as way to help me help, the women and girls I sponsor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a rewrite
Clearly written and with a real understanding of female approach to a 12 step program, this book is useful for women in recovery. I think it also has something to say to those who are seeking an approach to deal with other issues, such as emotional or anxiety disorders, etc. In any case, it expands on the basic themes of the program and helps expand their meaning to fit the different viewpoint many women bring to the process. I liked the compassionate tone; the forgiving and self-accepting meaning of the original message is only amplified in the author's discussions of the steps. It makes you feel as if you have another ally in your work. Well worth reading, and I'd even say it has something to say to you even if you are not in a recovery program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for us, too!(Group Therapy)
This book is an extremely useful tool in a group where women have been victimized by mollesters, rapists, and religious groups. It addresses issues of addiction as well as women's victimization issues.I suppose it just depends on where you are! ... Read more
