3-0 out of 5 stars A book for policy planners and not clinicians
This is a book for American policy makers. It is not a book for clinicians so it is not meant for me.It has reconditions for clinicians but these recommendations are probably better made elsewhere by other sources. If you are a clinician in Australia, for example, there are a number of organisations that should be approached individually such as one's college (one's board, in other words), hospital (for ACHS and in-house measures), HIC, and, or course, one's insurer. All of those people will be able tell you exactly what to study.Insurers have money at stake so they are well motivated.I asked a legal officer at my insurer if they could help with quality issues and she said "you're kidding" and paused while I wondered if I had asked a stupid question or offended her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help me get back on track!
I purchased Dr. Fairburn's book about 5 years ago.By faithfully writing my food down daily and following his program, i stopped binge eating for over a year!
2-0 out of 5 stars Falls short of the mark
This book does offer some helpful suggestions, such as establishing a regular eating schedule, keeping track of what you eat and finding alternatives to bingeing. But I found its explanations unsatisfying on the answers to pertinent questions such as, "What causes bingeing?"The author talks about factors like gender and social class and the prevalence of dieting, but I was looking for an explanation on the physiological level, which this book does not provide.
5-0 out of 5 stars Book and WW compliment each other
I too found this book extremely helpful. But, I am doing WW and I think the WW lifestyle NOT DIET totally compliments Fairburn's philosophy.WW does NOT forbid food, it teaches healthy habits. Both encourage journaling etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on what spirituality REALLY means
Twerski has a very interesting background and training. He was a son of a rabbi, but went to medical school instead and now runs a substance abuse center. This makes him very qualified to talk on the subject of spirituality in recovery, which he does brilliantly in The Spiritual Self.A short book, I consider it a must read for anyone in a 12-step spiritual recovery program (as I am).We always wonder what people mean by saying 'I want to get more spiritual'.Well, the answer is explained eloquently and simply in Twerski's book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unreadable!
Years ago, I read Prozac Nation. I found the story very interesting. Wurtzel was intriguing. But this book? Well, it lacks everything that Prozac Nation had. The writing is poor. The stories are not very exciting or interesting. Wurtzel seems to enjoy writing just to entertain herself.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oh the pain! Where's my candy?!
By far the best I've ever read of Elizabeth Wurtzel, and I am a big fan of her other writings. But this one is so candid (and even if she's making some of this stuff up, who cares?) and so intimate, painful and real. You will read of her depraved behavior under drugs and some will say, "I can't even imagine living like that." But others of us will say, "That sounds all too terribly familiar." But after reading of the stranglehold addiction had on Wurtzel (or it seems at times the stranglehold she had on her own addiction) there is a true "happy ending." Its certainly not conventional, but it's believeable, aware and honest. Which is all really any of us that have struggled with such problems (even in the most innocuous, experimental capacities) can expect. More, Now, Again, is more than a memoir, it is a full, therapeutic confession and because of Wurtzel's masterful writing -- it is the reader's vicarious therapy as well. Bravo for the easiest 5-star rating I've ever given!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I personally liked this book a lot (remember if you don't agree your entitled to feel however, it's your opinion and this happens to be mine). I enjoyed it because as a person in sobriety (4 1/2 years) things that we do while were using or drinking are apart of our stories or experiences, and it's know one's place to judge. Some or most of us put ourselves in situations that are incomprehensible and demoralizing enough. Anyone who can be honest with themselves and open up to the world to see takes a lot of courage(and one of the hardest things for an alcoholic or addict to do)Its almost the equivalent of telling your secrets and putting yourself out there. It is not about doing a drug a log, but a major and important piece is on the road to recovery. It is a struggle to live on life's terms, when all you have done is suppress it with booze or drugs to separate you from reality. I recommend it to anyone in recovery or anyone curious about recovery. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Author paid for his "degree"
He is NOT a doctor. The only degree he has is from a unaccredited CORRESPONDENCE school!!! It was shut down by court order in 2001. He paid $72 for his "degree". He is now involved in Oasis Life Sciences, a MLM selling junk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't argue with results
You can argue all you want about qualifications of Mr. Cherniske. But I will say that my daily caffiene intake was from 600-1100mg a day for years, I quit cold turkey about a month before I started reading the book...and the withdrawal was incredible....headaches, shakes, irritable beyond belief. You can't say this isn't an additive drug while you're slugging down four or more startbucks coffees a day.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can't believe I bought It. Now I'm feeling blue.
This book is so long and boring I needed caffeine to keep me awake. You definitely don't need to go through 400 pages just to come up with the same conclusion. He uses researchers who do not have nor will have soon hard evidences that there is something more than higher risk for this or even that it can happen to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Axe To Grind
Clear readable practical education and guidance on dealing with your or your loved one's addiction.Covers all the most important treatment approaches without moralizing and helps you choose what is most helpful or appropriate to your situation. I have already recommended to two patients who both found it tremendously helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the title-This is a really smart book!
The title of this series always turns me off--so formulaic and usually simplistic. But this book is different! The format is simple and the material is presented in the clear, crisp and easily readable style typical of this series but this book is also truly wise, practical and compassionate in its approach. There is up-to-date information on medications, the physiology of addiction, treatments and groups that can offer support to the addicted person and plenty of practical advice for those on the sidelines (family, friends, spouses) who want to help but don't understand the problem. The book makes practical suggestions for treatments/groups that can help, how to deal with relapse cravings and moving forward in life without relying on an ultimately self-destructive habit. I have 30 years of experience as a therapist and this is one of the few selp-help books that I respect. I plan to give it to my clients and to recommend it to colleagues. Buy it---you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read on addiction--really helpful!
I can't recommend this book too highly. I have been working in this field for years and have searched for a book that would not turn off people struggling to come to terms with addictive problems. This book is easy to read, concise and presented in a manner that invites the reader to stay with the material. In addition to giving great information on the biology of addiction, it is full of excellent suggestions on how to practically go about attacking the problem. And it is optomistic! So important when someone feels overwhelmed by the problem and has struggled, often unsuccessfully, to change behaviors that are self-defeating. I would also advise relatives and friends of addictive persons to use this book to help them cope better with this issue and to find hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly amazed...
I am what this book characterizes as a compulsive spender. Reading this book not only helped me get my spending under control but also helped me change my opinion on how I viewed money in my life. It really goes through different types of people such as the compulsive spender (me), to the cash co-dependant--someone who actually assists someone with their money issues (i.e. a woman who is continuously giving a boyfriend her money, when he continuously loses the money and does not do him nor her any good.). This book works on self esteem and an "I can do" attitude towards money. The first half of the book focuses on finding what type of "Money Drunk" you are and identifying with other scenarios with quick stories and examples. The second half is the battle plan, that lasts 90 days and is grouped into different themes; Awarness (Finding out what and how you acquired this problem), Acceptance (Learning to deal with your addiction), and Action (Do something about it and how). It even has a relapse checklist and a section towards the end on spirituality. If you are not into the religion aspect, please note the book does not "steer" you towards counting directly on religion so don't worry. Everyone can enjoy and benefit from this book which is easy to read and flows well... Even loved ones of money drunks can benefit from this book. I get distracted easily and never seem to finish a book but this book was so well written and gave me such continuous hope I couldnt help but keep on reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Mind About Money!
As a therapist and seminar leader on money issues, I love their "Are You A Money Drunk?" quizzes. They help explain and re-orient the underlying attitudes and beliefs that fuel a bad relationship with money. The book offers a foundation of healing for people who think they cannot control their spending, and are using money as a drug.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!
This book was very helpful. It explained many things that I could not quite figure out. The book is very matter of fact, and NOT condemning. I would heartily recomend it to anyone struggling with debt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethical must read material for addictions professionals
Well researched and well written. If you work in the field of addiction treatment you have an ethical obligation to read this book.If you are contemplating seeking treatment, you should know what you are getting. "Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware" should be the warningposted at the entrance of most addiction treatment centers in the US.This book offers the most up to date research which strongly suggests thattraditional treatment in the US maybe worse or no better than no treatmentat all.It has chapters outlining effective alternatives such as BriefSolution Focused Therapy, Community Reinforcement Approach, and SocialSkills Training.Frankly if you are an addictions professional in the USand haven't read this book or understand this material, you should read itor go get a job selling used cars. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential handbook from the master of supervision
The only thing better than having this book is having the opportunity to hear David Powell speak in person. I had the privilege of attending a two day seminar on supervision by Dr. Powell, and his wisdom and inspiration for the field of counseling is truly amazing. This book is well thought out and practical, very helpful in guiding one through basic as well as more complex issues of supervision. Most credentialing bodies utilize his book for continuing education, and for good reason. Cannot say enough about Dr. Powell and this book. ... Read more

This author writes on this subject in an informative and unbiased way.I am a nursing student and this kind of knowledge is essential. Especially since I will probably end up working in an Emergency Department or as a Psych Nurse.I could only give it 3+ stars.I couldnt give it 4 or 5 stars as I did find some technical errors. Also some of the information presented does not clarify somethings, which could lead someone to a misconception. 5-0 out of 5 stars Ever give up drinking for a few weeks to make a point?
I'm in my 50's, spent 20+ years working in middle management in Fortune 500 companies, rarely even got hangovers, but was worried that I was drinking too much.I found this book an excellent wake-up call for those of us whose drinking, over the years (or decades) has been escalating to the point where we begin to wonder if our relationship with booze is getting the better of us.Its the fact that the auther was both a successful profession, and not perceieved by anyone else as having a serious problem that is what struck home the most for me.Like the author, I have several times quit drinking for a week or a month just to show myself I can.The mere fact that I felt I needed to do this was proof that I was at least sub-consciously aware that I was developing a dependence.Over the years, I began drinking more frequently and in greater quantity (although always 'safely' - either at home or when someone else was driving). While this book might be considered 'fluff' by real hard-core abusers, I think its value is in helping those who are beginning to question their lifestypes to really understand where they might be heading.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are alternatives for thinking people
Good personal stories included in this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent read; a good beginning
I heard about this book on the unhooked.com website. This a must read for an intelligent person who is serious about never drinking again. Just enough scientific research intermixed with personal stories - most high bottom drinkers will find themselves in this book. Those who trashed this book seemed to be filled with anger (a very predictible alcoholic response.) A few desired detailed research statistics on alcoholism.I don't need exhaustive studies to tell me if I have a problem or not but if need be, you can find all that online. What's important to remember is: This is just ONE of the many valuable tools available for becoming sober for life.If you are wise enough to take from this book what will help you and not expect it to be your "Big Book" then you will definitely benefit from the read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book, but it takes study
This is an excellent book to read if you want to stop drinking. However, I personally tried to stop drinking using this book alone, which didn't work. After a few years of making half-hearted attempts to quit drinking, I finally started going to SMART Recovery Meetings (Self-Management and Recovery Training), and that did the trick.SMART Recovery is based on cognitive and REBT therapy, which is exactly what Philip Tate teaches in this book.In fact, Philip Tate is actively involved in the SMART Recovery organization.
2-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a lesson in psychology, not that helpful in my opinion.
This book focuses way too much on disputing irrational self-defeating thoughts such as putting yourself down for not being able to stop drinking. The books answers your self-defeating thinking with such retorts as "prove it" over and over again. This book is also very ambiguous with confusing statements like this one all throughout the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Very enlightening for people stating, "I don't really want to quit, I've tried to quit and I can't, or I don't really think I have a problem."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book
As a child, I unfortunately encountered problems with addiction in my family. I was given this book by a ffriend of my mother's. Together, my mom and I would read it, and it ultimately helped me cope with understanding "daddy's problem." I believe this is an excellent choice for children who are seeing the effects of addiction in their families. It is also a very informative books for those fortunate children who do not have to deal with addiction. It was definitely a huge help for me!
