5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
For anyone who is a student of the Course in Miracles, or if you just happen to believe that the basic principles of CIM are worth integrating into your lifestyle, this book is a great resource. The concepts are brief but clear. My husband and I have worn out our first copy, and we keep extra copies around to give as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Meditations for Practing the Course
Again, I have read this and still do. My daughter read parts of mine and liked it ,so I bought it for her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Daily Meditations for Practicing The Course
This book is a reference that I always go back to. When I feel myself getting particularly stressed in my job or my home life, I remember the lessons I've learned from the Course in Miracles and I will pick this book up and open to a page, read the lesson and apply it to the current situation or issue in my life. It reminds me to be grateful and keeps me on track. It is not your conventional way of thinking, but it makes so much sense if you open yourself to the principles and meditations it offers. I have it on my desk for easy access on a daily basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for families
Debra Jay has been on Oprah more than a few times. She's the blond lady with the glasses who is always so direct with addicts and their families. Her new book is a revelation. Basically, her idea is that there should be zero tolerance for untreated addiction in the family. After all, why should the alcoholic have the right to "hit bottom" in their own sweet time, when the family is suffering?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Womens way through the 12 steps
This is a great starter book for any women, in any type of recovery. This is my third copy of this book in twelve years I use it as way to help me help, the women and girls I sponsor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a rewrite
Clearly written and with a real understanding of female approach to a 12 step program, this book is useful for women in recovery. I think it also has something to say to those who are seeking an approach to deal with other issues, such as emotional or anxiety disorders, etc. In any case, it expands on the basic themes of the program and helps expand their meaning to fit the different viewpoint many women bring to the process. I liked the compassionate tone; the forgiving and self-accepting meaning of the original message is only amplified in the author's discussions of the steps. It makes you feel as if you have another ally in your work. Well worth reading, and I'd even say it has something to say to you even if you are not in a recovery program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for us, too!(Group Therapy)

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a humane approach...
Steve Hassan knows whereof he speaks, and this book will help anyone looking to rescue a loved one or friend from the grips of the mind control tactics that characterize sects of all kinds. The most important aspect of Hassan's program is respect: respect for what may have sent a person into the clutches of a sect to begin with, and respect for the individual lost in the double-talk miasma of sect manipulation. This is a book of hope and love; every single member of a family can learn and grow from it, and its message tells us never to give up.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite book to recommend to people who want to learn about cults
This book presents a practical approach to planning an intervention when you have a loved one in a cult. Mr. Hassan's style is compassionate, never condescending and healing for anyone who was ever in a cult. I appreciated what he shared about his own experiences in and leaving a cult. I found it encouraging that he now has embraced the religion he grew up in, Judiasm, as for so many of us who leave cults it becomes impossible to not view anything spiritual with suspicion.
5-0 out of 5 stars Important information
Mr. Hassan shares extremely important information in his scholarly work. Another more visceral story on how to escape a cult was written by a young woman who escaped from the Kool-aid cult, aka The Jonestown Compound. SEDUCTIVE POISON is a well written, thoroughly gripping first hand account of Life and Death in the People's Temple Cult. When I finished reading it I finally had a sense of how and why young idealists like Mr Hassan and Ms Layton joined their respective groups, from where they garnered the strength to leave and why they would later try to save others by telling their own stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents
I read this book in the wee ours of the morning when my child was a crying infant. It has been a great part of bringing her up as a self assured young lady.
5-0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing Resource for Parents
Jean Illsley Clarke has given parents and families a real gift with this book. Our family has benefitted so much from her insights, that we were able to understand and apply right away.3-0 out of 5 stars Good advice, but focuses only on what we say
There is good advice here, and know I will refer to the book often. But, there were two things that bothered me while I read it.First, some parts are hard to follow. An example is when the author gives real life examples of families.Family members and friends are often mentioned when they haven't been introduced yet, so as I read along, another name suddenly pops up,and I must stop and figure out "who is this?"Only after going back and then reading all the way through the paragraph again do I figure out the relationships.Second, the advice is really only based in the things we say to our loved ones.Communication is great, but simply saying these "magical phrases" alone is not enough. Before saying any of these affirmations to someone, it might be useful to ask questions to understand where they're coming from and if they even want affirming. It seems like the author presumes you already know when these affirmations are useful. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Could Use a Proofreader
It is necessary to note that this book is required for CADC licensure in some certification programs. As such, it is so poorly written and organized, I am finding it difficult to get through it. I am disappointed to have paid significant money for what is assumably quality research and information about substance use and abuse, presented in a manner that is careless and disorganized. There are innumerable grammatical errors and the author lacks focus and consistancy within paragraphs. It is inexcusable to read a "textbook," where basic sentence structure and writing is neglected. While the information contained is assumably valid and of great value, its presentation is lacking at best.I hope that future additions are more cost effective and adhere to a higher standard of professional educational writing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
This is a surprisingly poorly written textbook. One can tell that more and more information has simply been cut and pasted into this book over the years. The continuity and organization of the book suffers. The authors (or a new author) should consider writing a new text from scratch --- one that encompasses the entire field of substance abuse counseling more comprehensively.

4-0 out of 5 stars more helpful for some than for others
This is a very good book for people suffering from compulsions--actual physical rituals such as handwashing, for example--but is less helpful for people suffering from "pure obsessions"--that is, ruminations without overt compulsions. A number of recent books address "pure obsessions" much better than this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book wasn't right for me.
I was looking for a step by step process, but this book isn't written that way. If you're looking for a step by step process..this isn't it. One thing I don't like about this book is that it's more like stories of the authors patients and also the author keep saying I will talk about something in chapter so and so, I talked about it in chapter so and so....sign of a bad self help book.
