4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text for medical management of addictions
This year, I needed a comprehensive text to help me put together a lecture on substance use disorders for psychiatrists taking their board exams. It had been some time since I, a psychologist who conducts research on co-occurring disorders, had updated myself generally on current knowledge regarding substance use disorders. This text was very useful for this purpose; I can see it being a useful reference guide for medical practioners concerned with treating those with substance use disorders. I found Schuckit's classification of substances by their effects (depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens) rather than trying to present information on similar-acting drugs individually (cocaine, amphetamines) particularly useful. The chapters are concise and well-written and loaded with details as noted by the previous reviewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a recovery book
This book uses Buddhist philosophy integrated with Western science to help readers discover and define meaning and purpose in life. It's not only a book about overcoming addiction, but can help anyone to find a more fulfilling way of life.

4-0 out of 5 stars A flexible, integrated approach to overcoming addiction...
Mindful recovery is a book that focuses on maintaining your abstinence from any addiction, once you have made the decision to quit: "...if you can build a happy, fulfilling, meaningful life, relapse will be much less of an issue." It's a flexible approach to recovery based on facing life with an attitude of acceptance, rather than running away from life through an addiction.5-0 out of 5 stars Good alternative to AA and to non-chemical addictions
I had been searching unsuccessfully for a book that dealt with computer games addiction. A friend suggested that the 12-Step program could help with all kinds of addictions, but I was just not comfortable with the whole religious aspect of that model. Read more

If people took more time to read, perhaps we could avoid the idiotic things like the War on Drugs, or, the War on Terror.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful
For those of you with a lot of time and imagination on your hands, I highly recommend Dominic Streatfeild's history of cocaine. It'll probably be the most fascinating beach read you'll ever pick up and as he drives us from the Incas to Pablo Escobar, Streatfeild's sense of adventure is contagious.
1-0 out of 5 stars So far it's terrible!
I had been looking forward to picking up this book for a couple years. I am currently a criminal defense attorney, and former assistant prosecutor. The topic of illegal drugs is rather interesting to me, and is very important in our criminal justice system. I was looking for an informative book on the topic of cocaine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
This book describes more than just how to manage time -- as the title suggests, it's a holistic approach to attaining balance in one's entire life. The ideas in it are practical without being overly simplistic. The authors have a clear writing style, so that it's easy to follow what they are saying. The book starts with two short quizzes to help the reader determine what areas of their life might require more balance. The authors use examples liberally to illustrate their points. These examples are clear and relevant. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another good book on balancing your life is...
I haven't read this book yet (their other books are excellent), but if you're looking for books on balancing your life, I cannot recommend Alan Loy McGinnis' book "The Balanced Life : Achieving Success in Work& Love" too highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!
I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic.I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me.One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever.Another message is you can change if you want to.And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.
1-0 out of 5 stars Drink/Link is not recommended for the alcoholic
This book is not written for those of us that have been overindulging for years. It is written for the folk that are on the verge of becomming an alcoholic.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking
This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book
I don't usually write reviews about books, but I felt obligated to write a review for this one. The book not only gives great advice about eating, but also great general advice for everyday life. The book is well-written and reads like a novel. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful & Inspirational Book of Overeaters!
Wow-this book really encouraged me in my journey with compulsive overeating. It is a terrific resource for the beginner all the way to the fully recovered! Written from an insider's perspective, this book is sure to comfort, encourage, and strengthen overeaters and/or those who love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Having been with someone with several addictions - I got into reading self help books - this one I rate VERY highly - it explains well the trouble in recovery from addiction - covers drugs, alcohol and other addictions.Drew Pinsky is brilliant making it into a story of his life in treating patients with various problems.
3-0 out of 5 stars Addiction smoke and mirrors
I have this book and I listen to Dr. Drew almost every week. I like him and I like most of what he says. On the other hand, he always seems to think that every adult life problem can be reduced back to some "abuse" during childhood. It is like a broken record. Someone calls his show and he "spot diagnoses" them in like 6 seconds as a child abuse "survivor". It is almost like self-parody.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very compassionate work
I must say that I was incredibly impressed with this book. Having enjoyed Dr. Drew on Loveline and on his new round of shows on the Discovery Health Channel, I figured I'd like this book - I was right. It shows not only the struggle of his patients, but also his struggle as a doctor, showing compassion for not only his job but for his patients. The subject matter all in all is actually very uplifting and inspiring.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Only Way To Live
I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting.Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives. To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul. For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe. Please give this practice a try! This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.
5-0 out of 5 stars a day at a time
I have used this meditation book as a recovering person since 1983 and have given it as gifts for years. This is my favorite of these type books because it is not purely Christian in its focus. There are quotes includedby many diverse authors(Epicurius, Homer, Thomas Merton, Emerson, evenElizabeth Barret Browning to name but a few).It also leads one thru thetwelve steps as a suggested program of action rather than a guilt obsessed"should book". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A gift for oneself and others
My husband has used this book for about ten years and has found it tremendously helpful. It lives next to his chair in the den, and he spends about 30 minutes with it in the morning while I'm still asleep. He reads the daily entry and meditates on the suggestions and affirmations on each page. He's commented that it provides comfort without being sugary, and he values the thoughtfulness of each entry, the low-key approach, and the wide range of sources quoted.I've browsed in and believe that it would be helpful to anyone, regardless of one's spiritual orientation... or lack of same.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Daily Wisdom
I stumbled across this awesome book while desperately seeking solace and advice following the (unwanted) end of my 19-year marriage. While not an alcoholic, I've seen how the 12-step program can change people's lives, so I wasn't put-off by thereferences to it in the text.In any case, the focus on 12-step principles is low-key, and the book uses a number of other sources of wisdom to help the reader become more self-aware, calm and centered during the storms, large and small, of life. My well-worn copy is now in its sixth year of use. It's been so helpful that now just the act of picking up the book starts to calm me down!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Approach to Life
I use this book to try to make sense out of life stresses. It's a small pocket book, nicely printed. There's one page corresponding to each day of the year. Each page starts with a quote from diverse folks: Einstein, Twain, Thoreau, Shakespeare, Woody Allen, etc. Then there's a small essay about a way to approach the day.In some ways, it's a supplement or even a substitute father, making gentle suggestions about the ways that the world works, and good ways to encounter and appreciate it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A wasted life redeemed
He really has to be one of the biggest junkies in rock 'n roll. He's right, it is truly amazing he is alive, even if only half of what he says is true. He sure seems to remember a lot for someone so strung out! That's why I say that, I'm sure that there is big hunks of his life he doesn't remember or remembers incorrectly. But I see this as a memoir so I'm not going to pull an Oprah and yell "That's what you said, That's what you said, Ain't that what you said? Liar! Liar! Liar!"
5-0 out of 5 stars ....and he's still alive?
Three Dog Night was a great musical group at the height of their career.I still enjoy listening to their music today. The book displays the wild and crazy life of Chuck Negron and 3 Dog Night in their heyday and beyond. With all of the drugs, drinking and women these guys did I'm surprised that they're ALL not already dead.Although it's evident that their elder years are no picnic at this time.Chuck Negron's story is perfect proof that when you mix all of that talent with narcotics, alcohol and sex - you get nothing but stupid, and then you get broke. Most of Chuck's story made me so sad for the people around him, especially his son.For old fans like me of 3 Dog Night I would love to see them perform together again. Because, as one previous reviewer said 3 Dog Night IS NOT 3 Dog Night without Chuck Negron. As Chuck Negron alone is not 3 Dog Night. Here's hoping that eventually they can put enough of their disturbing pasts behind them and get together as sober performing professionals again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guilty pleasure...
Chuck Negron's memoir "Three Dog Nightmare" has the feel of an AA guest speaker recounting his downward spiral. As many speakers in AA tend to do, Negron dwells quite a bit on the most sordid aspects of his life as well as bragging quite a bit about his accomplishments & the depth of his addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dark Night of Recovery
This book is a must read for those in recovery but I think it would help almost anyone.I got it from someone who bought 10 copies and gave them to everyone close to her.Now I want to buy 10 copies and give it to those I care about. The twelve steps are presented to you in a way that allows you to appreciate the journey.Trudging the road to happy destiny, I couldn't put the book down!I'm starting to read it again and have formed a group w/several other women, we will meet monthly and go through each chapter so we can continue to grow together -- one day at a time.Bless you Tyler and Bob...and Edward Bear wherever you are!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
I just ordered my 9th or 10th copy of this book.I've lost count.I keep giving it away because it is the most helpful book on recovery I have ever read.I seriously want Tyler to be my sponsor but I guess he's pretty busy.P.S.The Deadly Fears and Needs books are also excellent (in fact I just re-ordered those too!!!)I'm beginning to think I should buy these books by the gross. If you are at all interested in improving your spiritual life and wondering what its all about, this is the book for you.You don't have to be a recovering alcoholic to get it but if you know a recovering alcholic this is the perfect present. You might also want to pick up the Velveteen Rabbit.Thank you Edward Bear.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fast reading book full of insights and wisdom
I thought the flow of conversation in this book made for interesting reading and discussion. A good read for anyone in recovery. Do you need a sponsor? This book answers the question clearly. Yes. 5-0 out of 5 stars Actually Five-Plus Stars !!
This workbook is the best cognitive approach (CBT) to recovery that I have read so far. Outstanding and easy to comprehend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful beyond addiction issues
I found this book to be a helpful and useful way to look at one's self not only in the context of alcoholism or addiction, but in the context of life in general. This book comes from a very positive or affirming perspective, encouraging us to forgive ourselves, let go of the past, and take the steps to write our own script for the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are feeling lost and bad about yourself
I love to read and re-read this book. It's not just about being sober, it's about being human. I feel like I have a personal private therapy session every time I pick up this book to read various passages. It is like you are being personally addressed and all your issues are diminished and you get "freed up". I only wish these authors were "on the road" giving seminars or something but, alas, don't find anything online about that. A truly, loving, supportive, forgiving friend is found when reading these pages. Thank you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best on the subject
The Truth About Addiction and Recovery has to be the best, most comprehensive book on the subject. The book is cogent and intelligently written. It's impeccably sourced. It was a delight to read and have EVERY single question and doubt I've had answered somewhere in this volume.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, The last 1/2 gives you a plan
I gave this 4 stars since it was written in 1992 and no updates since (but maybe what was said is all that needed to be said)5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Coming Back and You'll Never Get Away!
I have known people to sober up with 12 Step Programs. And without them. I have been sober for over 20 years and I did not avail myself of AA. According to AA, this is not possible. But AA does not see those of us who simply didn't buy into the disease model - one that oddly enough finds treatment in peer groups - disparaged by one 12 stepper below. Umm - 12 step programs ARE peer groups - nothing more happens than listening and talking - both of which can be quite magical. I just am living proof that you don't need Bill W. to do it. I didn't want to "keep coming back" to rooms of people who only had my "disease" in common. So I surrounded myself with "healthy" people. It was hard. I didn't have the excuse of "my disease talking" because I had to take responsibility for the garbage coming from my mouth. I had to take responsibility for my actions. And I did it all at once. Stanton Peele is not against AA - if it works for you. But there is precious little scientific evidence pertaining to AA (it IS an anonymous program, after all) and when a friend started in AA and worried about the "sick and suffering alcoholics" who left the program, I sought them out and found more than a few - NOT drinking. They were busy holding jobs and being in families and friendships and pursuing interests and did not want AA to be one of those interests. Of course, that is just anecdotal evidence. But it's mine and good enough for me. Just like the AA "evidence" is anecdotal. Good to see somebody not just blinding swallowing the party line. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Cognative therapy of substance abuse by Aaron T. B
This book is listed as a clinician's handbook to the Cognitive Therapy of substance abuse, however it's contents are readily available to the layman. It is both clear and well referenced and I have found it to be insightfulinasmuch as not being overly obscure in relation to the methods of therapythat fall outside of the Cognitive model. It is presented to define firstwhat cognitive therapy is and how to proceed within it's guidelines andsecondly to define the many concurrent psychological states that accompanythe problems of the substance abuser. Whereas I am not a professional inthis field I must admit that occasionally the text goes beyond my technicalability to comprehend it, however most of what is offered is assessable andunderstandable without being a trained professional. Would I suggestreading this book if you are not a professional? Only if you already havean interest or need surrounding the subject matter. I do not think thatthis particular read is for casual or recreational reader, however if youfind yourself needing to know more about the cognitive therapy of substanceabusers, then this book is a must. Would I suggest reading this book if youare a professional? Yes, it would seem to me that this book would berequired reading in reference to dealing with the growing problems centeredaround drug abuse -- with particular emphasis on cocaine and crack cocaineand the difficulties in treating these particular addictions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Just gets better with age
The original Trimpey cult item, now disavowed. But it's just as valuable as it ever was. Very amusing take on AA ... having almost nothing to do with the facts ... Jack don't like facts ... Jack does love his opinions.Don't bother to purchase. Just step over to the nearest bar ... and don't drink. Try it again and again. Just say no. Just don't drink. Now wasn't that easy?

2-0 out of 5 stars Superseded
Like the person from Anchorage implies, The Small Book has been superseded by Trimpey's book, "Rational Recovery..."Trimpey has disavowed The Small Book, because he added new concepts and abandoned others (e.g., the Rational Recovery system no longer has support groups). In fact, Trimpey states on his website that he wishes he could pull The Small Book from publication, but he is powerless to do so.Buy the Rational Recovery book instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving My Son
This book has done more to save my son, who has been a drug addict for the last 10 years, than all three of the rehab clinics and AA meetings combined. For the first time in years, he is actually thinking positive and feeling good about himself. He also encouraged me to read it too.It is a great book for anyone, whether you are an addict or not. ... Read more
