1-0 out of 5 stars There are better books on this subject
I found this book lacking. There are better authors out there covering this subject with more clarity.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging retelling of the search for self.
John Lee, well known in the men's movement and the recovery movement, setsout to share with us his growth through his own troubles based on his priorrelationships. His insights are well worth the read, as he shares with usthe enlightenment he experiences as he tries to deal with the weight of hisparents, his early rejections, and his inability to express the rage hefeels in an appropriate way. His story is sometimes almost too personal: wedon't really want to be there through ALL of it, somehow. And yet, we aretransfixed even on the most basic responses he feels. His progress issteadyand we are rewarded by the goals he achieves. Alas, like real life, there is no happy ending with the girl, the horse and the sunset. Still, the changes he feels, the inner pains he quells, these are all worth thepain he still carries, the fights he still has to fight. An enduringvolume, and a must for the man still struggling with his father, strugglingwith his pain, or not sure why he struggles, only that he does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for survivors of toxic families.
I found this book helpful, hopeful and comforting for both my own painfrom childhood traumas and for understanding the person I love so much whohas his own demons from his childhood raised in an alcoholic family.Lee'sbook is probably most helpful to those who are ready and willing to facetheir problems and find professional help to guide them in confronting andneutralizing the pain so destructive to successful and meaningful adultrelationships.A short read, an inexpensive book, but very useful! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A welcome edition to low carb literature.
This book supplies an interesting twist to the low carbohydrate approach. The essence of the Carbohydrate Addict's diet is that most carbohydrates are only allowed during one meal a day which is known as the Reward Meal. But they must be eaten in a balanced manner. The meal starts off with two cups of low carbohydrate salad vegetables. After this each plateful of food is divided into thirds. On one third of the plate is another serving of low carbohydrate vegetables. On another third is a protein dense selection such as meat, poultry, fish, cheese, eggs or tofu. The last third contains the dense carbohydrate selection such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, peas, corn, carrots, fruit, fruit juices and indulgences. The meal must be consumed within one hour.

I was expecting simple daily meal plans and it was a lot of reading and recipes that are not always food items on hand.I was really disappointed in the book.

Police departments in many regions across the United States say methamphetamine now represents 70-80% of their drug cases. Why? Meth is a cheap buzz and can be homemade with over-the-counter chemicals and cold remedies. It's also very quick to addict the user.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some Right, Much Wrong
The authors have some good insights, like that America is full of co-dependants and encourages co-dependant relationships (not always on purpose of course) but they get much wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars practical, aplicable, better than Beattie
I have read through some of Melody Beattie's books, and I was thankful that there is a better book out there!!I'm analytical and like all things practical, so most of the codep books out there seemed a little to much of a rant or lament than anything practical.(I was disappointed with Beattie's perspective, because she speaks on a general level and never walks people through ways to grow and change. Her books seem fatalistic with the idea that once an codependent, always a codependent.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort In Grief
I read this a month after my own wife's death. I found Lewis's sharing of his grief to be comforting.I found his honesty to be refreshing. You do not needto be a Christian or religious to benefit from this book. I also enjoyed the afterword by Walsh. It helped to put Lewis's book into the context of his life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful thoughts from a beautiful mind.
This is the second C.S. Lewis book I've read and I'm starting to get a better feel for his writing style. He is a very thoughtful man. He likens his wife's passing to that of a blacksmith putting the finishing touches on a beautiful sword he just made. Perfection at last. Now it can be weilded by God as he sees fit. Oddly enough, I've always wanted to think of myself in this same way. A bright, beautiful and well balanced sword that God can make use of when I'm finally with him. But I must first undergo some forging and tempering called "life". I'm not sure where I picked up on this idea. It's interesting to see that other people think in this exact same way.
5-0 out of 5 stars "A tender heart, a steel-edged mind"
In A Grief Observed, the heart of C.S. Lewis has been peeled away, revealing its tender, fragile core--the tender fragile core of a man who fully loved a woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational, Interesting and Inspiring
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has a young family member or a loved one with an addiction. The Author does an excellent job expressing and explaining the life of the afflicted in a way anyone can understand. If he can overcome the obstacles/addictions in his life than so can most anyone. This is a must read for those who seek hope for their addictions and it will provide hope for their families as well.I have a new found empathy for the struggles of an addict/alcoholic, and a new found hope for them too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for those who love an addict
I felt this book helped me understand the addict's mind a little better, and how when a normal person would think someone would hit bottom it isn't so with the addict.

An outstanding book for the addicted and for the families and loved ones of the addicted.I can only speak personally for the families and friends of those affected by addiction. This story makes you realize that only the addicted person can get themselves clean and into recovery.Family and friends can only love them - and then provide support to them AFTER they admit their addiction AND when they are actively involved in their recovery program.Anything family members and loved ones do before this only ENABLES the addict to continue their active destructive addiction. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing find
I first came across a copy of the Way of a Pilgrim when wandering in India in 1972. Someone had left the book in a deserted house in Goa on a shelf along with a stack of onions. Many thanks to whoever that was.The onions were nourishing to the body. But the book was an introduction to a world of prayer of which I had no previous knowledge.Whoever the Pilgrim was, his yearning had evidently been answered and he was truly 'on the way'.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Spiritual Enlightening Story
I have read this book twice....I especially like French's translation. It opens an aspect of the Christian Life which is not delt with in Western Christian thought or spiritual disciplian. It opens an aspect of Christianity which I found very meaningful and powerful. The book was a true blessing.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Virtually Unknown Christian Classic!
Though virtually unknown in Western Christianity, THE WAY OF A PILGRIM, is one of the most revered classics of Orthodox spirituality. In the first portion of this book the unnamed pilgrim introduces the reader to hesychasm through use of the "Jesus Prayer" (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner).I found this journal of the pilgrim's travels tedious. The second portion of the book is more of a theological question and answer session between the pilgrim and his companions.I enjoyed this section more. All in all, this is an important book for Protestants to read because it enlarges their awareness of the greater Christian world, but it probably will not make a profound impact by itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book is our text for JACS meetings
A group of us recently organized within the Jewish community of Phoenix to start a local chapter of JACS, Jewish Alcoholics, Chemically Addicted Persons, and Significant Others. We use this book as our text. A brief description of the JACS organization, and its relationship to and with other 12-Step programs is included in the Afterward section. Our group has grown steadily week to week, using "Twelve Steps" as both a source of inspiration and as an educational tool. It is not a replacement for other 12-Step programs, and doesn't try to be. Each chapter is devoted to one of the 12 principles, a concept that is not in the Big Book of AA, but which often triggers the introspection and self-awareness that is crucial to persons in recovery. Many Jews in our group are people who felt uncomfortable in traditional 12-Step meetings, for many, often different, reasons. This book reaches out to those people especially, helps ease their suffering, and brings all of us closer, ending the isolation which is so devestating. People get to recovery through many paths. We have found "Twelve Jewish Steps" to be both inspiring and community-building. So far, we've bought 24 books and we continue to need more. People use this book, reading it over and over. It increases compassion, understanding, and hope in both the person in recovery and in his/her family. There is no higher praise I can give.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important resource for the recovering addict
Although the twelve step program of recovery from alcoholism and addiction was developed by religious Christians, these programs are nondenominational and, in fact, adhere to key tenants of Judaism. The type of introspection, righting of wrongs, and doing better in the future are part of the Jewish process of teshuva which means "return" and is the Jewish way to repentance. Rabbi Olitzky and Dr. Copans set forth this process, offering meditations, aphorisms, psalms and prayers relevant to each of the twelve steps.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Jewish contribution to Jewish 12 step spirituality
This book is designed for all those who want help from Jewish tradition in their struggle in recovery from alcohol and other addictions. It provides a Jewish context for Jews in recovery and reminds others of their Jewishroots. It dares to take people where they have never gone before! ... Read more

Don't be fooled by the title, this book applies to EVERYONE! The honesty and truth in what John Lee describes and way he captures and words these truths is heart-opening, validating, healing and a huge relief. It is like he is describing the places we all know in ourselves but never talk about or want to own. I thought it would be too basic but honestly it is fresh and has really useful information that is easy to practice and apply to daily life. The realness and humility in John Lee's books always hit deep places in me and I am so grateful for his willingness to go before us and shine the light of his awarenesses for us as we try to find our own way.

5-0 out of 5 stars even the meanderings are helpful
This is a difficult subject for people like me who make rules and demand guarantees concerning what is free and spontaneous, namely, love.I found that his personal anecdotes resonated with life as I observe it in myself. What I do not recall from the book, but what I would have appreciated, is how we become attached to not loving ourselves, and how egos, or mine at least, tremble with the prospect of fully appreciating how ineptly they run the show. But maybe that is for a more advanced stage - there is a tremendous amount of cognitive work to do at the basic level, and there have been surprising benefits for me so far.Oddly enough, I just happen to observe more that is love-able in the family and friends around me, too, as of late, and I am grateful for the improved listening skills, improved empathy and improved relationships as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, optimistic and uplifting look at codependence
This volume by Jacquelyn Small integrates psychological and spiritual approaches to addiction East and West. She looks at codependence as a spiritual crisis and presents an optimistic and encouraging path forward to people struggling with these issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on relationships and personal growth!
This book is perhaps one of my favorite books on personal growth and interpersonal relationships. It integrates many theories of psychology and philosophy to help us develop more wisdom, care, and true strength of mind. This book has helped me understand myself immensely and I am very grateful to the author for this. If you are into books that integrate theories as well as the various fragmented parts of yourself, I also highly recommend the book "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. This book is spiritual roadmap for me. I use it all of the time now in my quest for self-development. It combines eastern and western thought and gives us a comprehensive understanding of ourselves. This is a great book to have if are interested in personal and spiritual growth. If you are interested in personal and spiritual growth, I also highly recommend the book "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is a bestseller among my group of friends and a completelyenlightening experience for all of us. ... Read more

"Sometimes compassion
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tender, helpful read
None of us in this life are allowed the luxury of escaping the loss of someone or something we love. If there is life, there will certainly be death. In this exceptional work, Grieving God's Way,author Margaret Brownley helps us to understand the grieving process and leads us upon the walkway to peace.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Realistic Help When Grieving
Brownley gets to the core of grieving. Her insight is believable, as she recognizes the agony of the persons grieving. The book is laid out addressing 4 sections of our being as we grieve. It is not necessary to read sequencially, rather where the need is at the moment. The haiku is also very instrumental for remembering details of each section. I depended on the help I knew I'd receive each time I opened "Grieving God's Way". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A superficial Book
Do not read this book if you are in fact in the greiving process. It will only plunge you further down as the author constantly reminds you that the pain never goes away, that it will be with you forever, etc.People who are in pain and are true to their feelings already know this. Can't she come up with something better than "making lemons out of lemonade" to help describe Transcendence? All the people she uses are forever damaged and admit they are.Where is the help in this? How can the REASON and MOTIVATION be found to actually "transcend" your tragedy and supposedly find "goodness" in terrible loss? This is not addressed. The author also claims to have interviewed fifty people(not a very large number), but uses the same five or so people for examples in the book.If you are in the grief process and looking for a book to give you that elusive glimmer of hope for the future, this is not it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Losses of Forbidden Women
Transcending Loss was an exceptional book.I found the author very realistic and honest in her betrayal of our losses and the no bones about it approach of what loss in our lives do to us.
5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and hopeful without being trite
Along the lines of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People," this book can really helpful in allowing you work through your grief in a positive, healthy way.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In a crowded field, "Happiness" is in a class by itself!
A friend of mine asked me to recommend a book to help her cope with her cancer diagnosis. She had searched here on Amazon for "breast cancer" and gotten more than 2,000 results. "How do I know which one is right for me?" she asked. I told her the answer was easy: get this book, "Happiness in Storm." Dr. Harpham is not just a physician who has experienced her own cancer, although she is that. She is a mother, a wife, and a survivor of repeated recurrences and remissions of chronic lymphoma. Throughout her 7-year journey, Dr. Harpham --- Wendy to her readers --- has shown herself to be a profound observer and participant in the process of finding and nurturing hope and joy, even as she researches treatment options and restructures her life to eliminate obstacles to healing. Many survivors tell their stories forcefully and eloquently, and Wendy excels in this, but what sets "Happiness" apart is that Wendy speaks directly to the Big Question that all of us face as we embark on life after cancer diagnosis, during treatment, and beyond: "What is the best way for me to live now?" Each of us will arrive at our own answers, but Wendy offers herself as a skilled guide, helping us apply to our own lives her philosophy, forged in the trenches, which stresses personal choice, positive actions, and reality-based hope. I laughed and I cried as I read this book, and I experienced profound relief to find a physician who clearly draws the lines between what we can and can't control, and a survivor who took me by the hand and showed me how happiness can flower amidst it all. Wendy taught me how to create hope in my own life -- that's the finest gift I could give anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help with a difficult journey
I use "Happiness in a Storm" as a wonderful reference book for dealing with the myriad difficulties that arise with a cancer diagnosis. My husband was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia years ago and with head and neck cancer more recently. I keep Wendy Harpham's book next to our bed, and when we're feeling especially anxious or sad, I flip through it and always find something that helps us feel better about our situation and a little more in control. I appreciate the combination of practical advice--such as how to get the most out of your relationship with doctors--as well as the more spiritual aspects of dealing with a serious illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars So, my feelings aren't crazy afterall
After battling chronic Hodgkins' Lymphoma for the past 6 years I figured I'd be through with issues of grief, loss, anger, inadequacy and flinching everytime someone innocently asks 'How are you?'--Dr. Harpham's chapters about emotions and taking action along with clear, how-to information helped me to realize that the cancer journey is an on-going process, my feelings are normal and that I can work through my issues and find hope and happiness too. The information in this book will likely never be outdated and it is one that I'll continuouslyreach for in my home library. Thank you Dr. Harpham! ... Read more
