5-0 out of 5 stars The ideal therapy
This book takes a wider perspective than most despite approaching therapy from a single emotion--shame. I suppose all therapy aims at "fixing" behavioral problems such as fighting authority figures well into adulthood, or playing the same out-of-balance role (caretaker, domineer, etc.) in multiple relationships. The previous reviewer was right: this book goes well beyond the consequences of alcoholism in families.
5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Sad
This book is an enlightening first step in understanding a spouse who is driven by perfectionism, anger and control. Reading the book makes you realize it's not their fault -- or yours either. (This does not make their behavior less destructive, but it's easier when you stop blaming them for it.) The person from this type of family does not have the self-awareness to recognize their own destructive impulses, much less develop the skills they need to have healthy relationships. It's like they are pre-programmed to destroy relationships with family and business partners. After reading this book, you realize that you, alone, cannot help your spouse, and if you keep trying to do it alone, you will only become more frustrated and heartbroken. It is a good guideline to begintherapy with a good family counselor, which I believe is the only way to break the cycle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview to understand the many origins of shame
Shame has a myriad of origins, this book gives an excellentunderstanding of shame and its effect upon our lives. It helps us todifferentiate the important difference between guilt and shame.Shame deeply effects our self esteem as well as how we view others and eventually our success in life. John Bradshaw, who is also an excellent writer, in his book regarding shame mostly limits his approach to those from alcoholic families. In this book, not only is this area covered but many other areas along with the developmental dynamics of shame and shame-based behaviors. Not coming from an alcoholic family I did not understand my own deep feelings of shame until I read this book.I highly recommend it for any persons who wish to understand themselves better on their road to becoming a more complete, self-accepting and healthy person. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An innovative guide and "reader friendly" introduction to self-discovery and contentment
There Are No Mistakes: Becoming Comfortable With Life As It Is, Not As It "Should" Be by Eleanor Wiley with the assistance of Caroline Pincus is an informed and inspiring collection of practical and intuitive commentaries focused on the goal of achieving an overall betterment of self and self-perception. Introducing readers to diverse but effective tactics and strategies, There Are No Mistakes provides knowledgeable guidelines for knowing where you came from, knowing your own personal story; accepting yourself; owning your own pain, hurt, and vulnerability; laughing at yourself; finding community; taking care of yourself; giving yourself permission to change your mind; willingness to fall apart and put yourself back together again;, creating a self help "tool box"; and just going with the flow. An innovative guide and "reader friendly" introduction to self-discovery and contentment, There Are No Mistakes is very strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Codependents
I borrowed this book from my therapist's library, as I'd arrive early each week to read a chapter at a time. I'm buying a copy for myself so I can write all over the margins! This book is a MUST for anyone close to a codependent as well as the codependent people themselves. It will feel like the author is reading your mind, was a fly on the wall as you grew up & has been following you all your life & knows your struggles by heart. Being truly understood by someone is a joy, but understanding oneself is the 1st step on the journey toward emotional & physical health, self-worth & self-respect, getting one's life & personal power back. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of alcoholic families and the dysfunction
This book was so relieving. To find reasons for ways my family functioned as a child and functions today as an adult.Sharon writes in a very objective way which is easy to understand and relate to.She has such vast experience, both personal and professional, in the field of family alcoholism which she shares in a well thought out and organized way.I could not wait to finish this book and move on to another one of her books, "Another Chance", which I am currently reading and becoming even more educated on my own co-dependent issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stage 11 Recovery: Love Beyond Addiction
This isn't just a book for people who have been addicted. I read it and I found it invaluable because I wanted a simple book on communication that gets to the point. It's humorous and makes me think what a better world it would be if we just applied these skills to our everyday lives. I think all couples should read this book before they get married or decide to live together. I learned that human kindness coupled with honesty is a very powerful thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't even think about not ordering this book!
Out of all of the books I have read on relationships, this book, although small, packs a big wollup! The title is a bit misleading, in that it doesn't just apply to the love addict. This book is great for the new couple and the couple who has been together for years... or even a single person looking to get into a healthy relationship.Read more

What's needed here are a few testimonials. Here's one for you. My son had been sleeping it off for a week and was totally in a fog. I fixed him a homemade orange julius, opened the capsules and slipped in Dr Gant's recommended nutrients, and walla... You never saw anyone come alive faster -in 3 minutes!! Here's the proof that it works: My son came so alive so fast that he insisted i tell him what I had put in his orange drink. He knew 'something' had worked!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Grief Recovery Handbook
As a grief facilitator, this is my one and only text for my participants. It is wonderful!

4-0 out of 5 stars Add this book to your Grief Toolbox
I found this handbook to be helpful, informative, and full of "aha" moments. There was much that I could relate to, especially the lists of commonly heard advice (misinformed, though well-meaning) intended by others as consolation. For example, I was comforted to learn that I wasn't the only one who found the comment "They lived a long life" to be insipid, irritating, and irrelevant.I really liked the authors' simple writing style and clear, concise instructions. The only potential downside to this book is that its effectiveness will be limited if you are working through your grief alone. Many of the exercises are intended to be done with a partner, and although the authors revised the book to include alternatives for those working alone, it's just not the same.As in PTSD work, much of the healing comes from the act of verbalizing thoughts and feelings to a trusted ally.Unfortunately, many of us - especially those who have been ostracized or have chosen a path of isolation - do not have this luxury.Still, I would recommend adding this book to your grief toolbox.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!
This is probably one of the best books you could ever read in order to become emotionally complete about ANY kind of loss or grief. If you want to take this a step further attend the Grief Recovery Workshop conducted by the author of this book, Russell Friedman, in Sherman Oaks, CA.What a life changing experience!www.grief.net ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cold realities from a warm heart
In a hundred pages Scaef does something truly remarkable. She confronts the self-serving and dangerous side of co-dependency yet maintains a nonjudgmental perspective. Many, many books, of course, discuss the dangers co-dependents present to themselves. This one goes beyond to look at the less comfortable topics of co-dependents' tendency toward manipulation, promotion of disease in others, martyrdom, dishonesty, and pathological self-centeredness.As a professional who grew up in a seriously alcoholic home, I wish that I had read this book years ago to see the pay-off I was getting from organizing my life around the pretense that I was other people's answers. But despite the harsh realities Schaef points out (and simply and compellingly demonstrates), I was left with a sense that I was not being shamed or judged and that I had the freedom to do better. This book takes more character to digest than most books on the subject, and I suspect that its writing took manifestly more character than one assisting people to continue seeing themselves as victims.I recommend it without qualification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise introduction to the problem of co-dependence
Schaef has written many books on the subject of addictive behavior, and I've read most of them. This one puts forth her basic philosophy (which is that dysfunctional, addictive behaviors are part & parcel of ourculture) in a slender volume that's easy to pick up & reread. Especially interesting is her theory that co-dependence is encouraged inour schools and churches. She presents her case with lots of examples, andwith the kind of passion it would be easy for the unconvinced to laugh at,but I personally think she speaks a truth that many people might finduncomfortable to face. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best "mourning anthology" I've seen
Wide-ranging, well-chosen short works (mostly poems, some chapters and essays) on death and grieving.I particularly liked how it was divided into "seasons" of grieving, so I could pick a section depending on how I was feeling in my bereavement that particular day (e.g., "Winter" is divided into Shock, Idealization and Anger, Sing Sorrow, Consolations, etc; "Summer/Fall" have Memory, Dreaming the Dead, Grief's Wisdom, etc). There are individual sections on Mourning the Loss of a Child and The Grief of Children.4-0 out of 5 stars good literary anthology
This is an excellent collection of literary selections about grieving. I was given this book and one other (Dying: A Book of Comfort, ed. Pat McNees) when my mother died. I couldn't read anything very long -- couldn'tconcentrate -- so it was helpful to have these books with short passages onwhat I was going through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Profoundly conceived, moving and helpful
This wonderful anthology is for anyone who loves poetry, but can be a miracle for those who both love poems and who find themselves in grief. It is so simply and intelligently organized, into sections that approximatestages following the loss of one who is loved, with selections of poetryranging from classic Chinese poets Mei Sheng and Fu I, whose first centuryB.C. verse hit my sensibilities as strongly as Anne Sexton's, to theincredible unvarnished strength of several Edna St. Vincent Millay poems, that forced me to see that poet in a different light. Each section can beread as its own anthology.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
this little book finally made all the pieces fit together and gave me the encouragement and insight I needed to quit smoking. What didn't work for me: the cancer and lung societies, church/religious based seminars, 12 step, hypnosis, the patches, gum, 12 years of nagging and frustrated attempts. What did work:honest self evaluation, determination and the truths I found in these pages.I never said "I'll quit tomorrow"; I just haven't bought that next pack of cigarettes and it's been nearly 14 years that I've never wanted to another cigarette.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of good tips
This book is full of time tested tips for overcoming an addiction. Many of the suggestions deal with one's mental perspective regarding quitting smoking, which I believe is very important once the physical craving subsides. This book is a very wise choice for someone who is committed to becoming an ex smoker.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Me
Having recently celebrated my 1 year anniversary in AA, this book really helped me understand where I am.There just aren't many people with my sobriety time in the fellowships I attend. They seem to have more or less time, so it has been difficult for me to understand why I feel the way I do.Those that came into AA when I did all seem to be gone and anybody with about my sobriety has been there before.I have a great sponsor, a solid Big Book Program, great fellowship and a constantly improving "life", but why do I feel different than I did a few months ago?Not bad, not great, but just good.
4-0 out of 5 stars If you're in your second your, look forward to relate...
I received this book after my first year of sobriety. It was incredibly useful to understand the transitions that I went through after just focusing on being clean & sober.I highly recommend to anyone who starts becoming more aware of feelings and life circumstances that we had years of not dealing with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped to remind me that I'm not alone
I bought this book after I celebrated my first abstinence Bday and didn't read it for another 6 months.I was so comforted by the stories of recovering folk in their 2nd year of sobriety, all who were experiencing difficulties in recovery that I could relate to.One of the most important things this book helped me to see is that it's okay to struggle. Now that I have 21 months of sobriety, it's not all about how do I take a shower or cook for myself; rather, I'm learning how to be a part of the world. This book was a welcome reminder that the issues I struggle with are akin to those that many 2nd-year recoverers struggle with. ... Editorial Review

"We are the keepers of an intuitive intelligence so powerful it can tell us how to heal," writes psychiatrist and practicing intuitive Judith Orloff, M.D. "We all possess within us an intuitive healing code that contains the blueprints for our health and happiness, and for the survival of everything that is good here on earth." Her aim is to teach you how to tap into and train your own intuitive powers and use them for your well-being.She divides the book into three parts: "The Body," "Emotions and Relationships," and "Sexual Wellness." She teaches five steps to intuitive healing, which she defines as "listening to your body's signals--your inner voice and heart, your spiritual connection--to find out how to become more physically, emotionally, and sexually whole." According to Orloff, these steps apply to every health challenge, as well as every emotional and sexual issue: Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book
Judith Orloff is a seminal figure who is bridging the gap between the wonders of Western medicine and the knowing that humanity had more access to when we were less mechanized and industrialized. In a world that has become so plasticized as to lose touch with the inner realm, her contribution has been consequential. That she is a well-credentialed and highly regarded psychiatrist (which requires one to be an MD), who uses all the tools that modern science has gifted us with, who also has a laboratory-tested gift for intuitive knowing, makes her uniquely worth listening to. The value she brings isn't dependent on her proving her case about her inner knowing, but comes from her telling you what can be known because she knows it -- you are getting a report from the front lines of inner space. Her rapid rise to great popularity as a speaker and workshop leader has been almost unprecedented, attesting to the chord she strikes with so many people who have felt safe, thanks to her, to come out of the closet with experiences that are not validated in our objectified modern worldview. Rather than being skeptical, it would behoove those who have relied only on the tools of science and technology to open themselves to the wisdom of this book.
