5-0 out of 5 stars best on the subject
The Truth About Addiction and Recovery has to be the best, most comprehensive book on the subject. The book is cogent and intelligently written. It's impeccably sourced. It was a delight to read and have EVERY single question and doubt I've had answered somewhere in this volume.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Information, The last 1/2 gives you a plan
I gave this 4 stars since it was written in 1992 and no updates since (but maybe what was said is all that needed to be said)5-0 out of 5 stars Keep Coming Back and You'll Never Get Away!
I have known people to sober up with 12 Step Programs. And without them. I have been sober for over 20 years and I did not avail myself of AA. According to AA, this is not possible. But AA does not see those of us who simply didn't buy into the disease model - one that oddly enough finds treatment in peer groups - disparaged by one 12 stepper below. Umm - 12 step programs ARE peer groups - nothing more happens than listening and talking - both of which can be quite magical. I just am living proof that you don't need Bill W. to do it. I didn't want to "keep coming back" to rooms of people who only had my "disease" in common. So I surrounded myself with "healthy" people. It was hard. I didn't have the excuse of "my disease talking" because I had to take responsibility for the garbage coming from my mouth. I had to take responsibility for my actions. And I did it all at once. Stanton Peele is not against AA - if it works for you. But there is precious little scientific evidence pertaining to AA (it IS an anonymous program, after all) and when a friend started in AA and worried about the "sick and suffering alcoholics" who left the program, I sought them out and found more than a few - NOT drinking. They were busy holding jobs and being in families and friendships and pursuing interests and did not want AA to be one of those interests. Of course, that is just anecdotal evidence. But it's mine and good enough for me. Just like the AA "evidence" is anecdotal. Good to see somebody not just blinding swallowing the party line. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are alone -- HE IS THERE
I love this book. I've never wanted to go to a Christian counselor but God blessed me with Dr. David Cox ( www.drdavidcox.com).This book is not only good for the survivor but also for those who want to survive.I read the book out of curiosity more than anything and discovered the love and pain that people left from suicide go through. It has shown me father god's love with such a passion (http://www.shilohplace.org and http://www.fathersloveletter.com). In his recommendations he also has provided me with a book called Father Hunger (http://www.mcgeepublishing.com) for those who yearn to know who the Father is that really cares. The one who won't leave you alone, the One who has always been there and watched over you and has never let you go.Wait until you discover that God is the one who never leaves you, who is always with you and who gives you the hope -- especially when you feel there is none.Don't be alone - because you're not.Your eyes will open when you see that you are not alone -- God is always there - always has been and always will be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aftershock: Help, Hope and Healing in the Wake of Suicide
This is an incredibly helpful book for which, sadly, there long has been a tremendous need. How I wish it had been available thirty or forty years ago. Silence too often follows suicide, which only delays and compounds the challenges of grieving such a loss. The authors rightly stress how vital it is that survivors talk about what has happened. This book is a powerful aid and encouragement in doing so. The earthquake metaphor works beautifully throughout; surely one's landscape is forever changed after a suicide, and in its aftermath it takes a long time for survivors to feel safe.Of the myriad after effects of suicide - including survivor guilt, fear and societal suspicion - all are eloquently articulated. The book's contents are broken up into manageable bites for readers who may be able to focus for short periods. The section on how to talk to children about suicide (and the importance of honesty) was particularly moving and very clear and helpful. Several personal stories are interspersed throughout the text and the variety of voices and perspectives enriches what is already an invaluable book. This is the book I will put into the hands of both survivors and those who want to offer the sort of help that is most needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed book for anyone who counsels others!
Anyone who counsels others should have this book in their library before it's needed. Dr. Cox knows first hand what it's like to be left behind after a family member completes suicide. When he was only nine-years-old, his father killed himself, leaving a confused, angry little boy. Other stories illustrate the book as he and Ms. Arrington help readers learn the signs that a loved one may be contemplating suicide, with a chapter dedicated to exploring teen depression and suicide. They compassionately guide readers and give them hope for rebuilding their lives when a loved one does indeed commit suicide. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Just gets better with age
The original Trimpey cult item, now disavowed. But it's just as valuable as it ever was. Very amusing take on AA ... having almost nothing to do with the facts ... Jack don't like facts ... Jack does love his opinions.Don't bother to purchase. Just step over to the nearest bar ... and don't drink. Try it again and again. Just say no. Just don't drink. Now wasn't that easy?

2-0 out of 5 stars Superseded
Like the person from Anchorage implies, The Small Book has been superseded by Trimpey's book, "Rational Recovery..."Trimpey has disavowed The Small Book, because he added new concepts and abandoned others (e.g., the Rational Recovery system no longer has support groups). In fact, Trimpey states on his website that he wishes he could pull The Small Book from publication, but he is powerless to do so.Buy the Rational Recovery book instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving My Son
This book has done more to save my son, who has been a drug addict for the last 10 years, than all three of the rehab clinics and AA meetings combined. For the first time in years, he is actually thinking positive and feeling good about himself. He also encouraged me to read it too.It is a great book for anyone, whether you are an addict or not. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring yes, helpful info - no
This book is inspiring and entertaining with uplifting stories of women affected by cancer. The only thing I found discouraging is that so many people facing cancer don't question some of the treatments they receive and do more digging into what is available, rather than just giving into the status quo and taking whatever their doctor gives them without question. I am an alternative medicine fan, so of course, I was hoping to see more accounts of women taking the initiative in this book and opting for more alternative treatments, which wasn't there. One reviewer mentioned breast cancer as possibly a "gift of higher understanding," which I just don't see. As a matter of fact, I can't see any cancer as being a "gift" of any sort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly, not what you think!
A sensitive, well edited and written series of vignettes by, for, and about women and cancer. Forty six women share their stories, addressing depression, reflection, inspiration, information, and retrospection of facing cancer. But it is more than another breast cancer book; it is a celebration of women and their wealth of responses to adversity. This is a must-read for any woman facing her own or a friend's cancer, or for any man who loves or cares for a woman facing a medical challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage
"The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage" was a wonderful source of comfort and encouragement.Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced.I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time.As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on.Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same.I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories.I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb book whose time is long overdue.
Gambling is one of the most rapdily spreading forms of addiction. In response, the biomedical addictions establishment has responded in its typical fashion of first denial, then quick evaluation whether these"new" patients can make the practitioner more financially comforable. Following this comes the inevitable third generation of turf squabbles, where various segments of the addictions and other interested communities attempt to cut themselves the largest portion of pie they can. 5-0 out of 5 stars Psychologist gives 5 stars
I highly recommend this unique book. The author, who has suffered from repeated episodes of severe depression, has put her turmoil into line drawings and short captions.
3-0 out of 5 stars it didn't work for me
This book is obviously written for a very specific audience; I just happen not to be a part of that audience. If you are considering reading the book then you must be, or have been, in somewhat of a continual dark and down mood. Based on a friend's recommendation, I read the book and not only was I still down, but a little confounded.First, the artwork made me more depressed with its shattered edges and black and white presentation.Secondly, the simplistic approach to conveying its message, initially I thought okay a soft opening with the heavy content later; it's later and I am still waiting.
3-0 out of 5 stars Put On A Happy Face!
This is a cute, little handdrawn and handwritten book which belongs in the children's section instead of upstairs with the nonfiction.Perhaps it is real life, but not as we all experience it.Depression comes in many forms, and hers was out-of-this-world, I admit. But I have yet to meet anyone else who suffer the same way with depression. Most of the time it is temporary, and this book would appeal to the pre-teens who would learn the most from it.

The history is well documented. The procedure is clear and we're seeing good results.

1-0 out of 5 stars There is another solution
Most alcoholics are looking for an "easier softer way," and this book affords that type of effort. The original text of Alcoholics Anonymous, named "Alcoholics Anonymous," is the perfect guide book for sobriety. Why fix something "that ain't broke?"Why speed through the steps and do them carelessly when there is no need?Don't buy this book, even if it's free.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for new people and "slippers"
Our home group began sponsoring a weekly Back to Basics meeting about a year ago. In that time we have seen many new people complete the "simplified version" of the steps that Dr. Bob and other old timers in Akron advocated, going on to become stable members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Additionally, we have seen many members who could not stay sober finally stay sober, having finally worked the steps in addition to just going to meetings. The power of the program is unleashed through the 12 Steps, and the Back to Basics is an excellent way to introduce the newcomer to this wonderful, sober, spiritual way of life that AA has to offer. Excellent interpretation of the 12 steps in clear and powerful words.Joe writes with clarity and effectiveness and keeps the reader involved and excited.Definitely emphasizes the healing potential of the twelve steps.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity Explained
I found this book to be, not only easy to navigate, but also a real "eye-opener" into the complex issue of Alcoholism. Being a recovering alcoholic myself, I would have given anything to have had this book much, much earlier in my sobriety. It clearly lays out the processes to identifying the personal faults associated with alcoholism and how to address them in a format that is genuinely unique, insightful, and most of all, easy to understand. Joe McQ's expertise is refreshing, yet to the point and would be a boon to all who seek help in understanding how to work "the steps". Special attention is paid to Steps IV & V, which include diagrams for exploring one's inner self; a tool I found most useful in identifying the "exact nature" of the wrongs we had committed and why they blocked us from contact with our "Higher Power". Overall, the book is factual, concise, and easily doable.Kudos, Mr. McQ, kudos. ... Read more

As a minister, and a student of A Course in Miracles since 1994, I found this book very inspiring and helpful in uncovering all that is addiction. It is not what you think. We used this book in early 2003 as a basis of study for our study group. The entire group received so much insight into their own addictive patterns and many were able to release so much to the Light and Love of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by life coach who does deep work with men
I think one thing that is lacking in our culture is permission for men to be vulnerable, have their feelings and reach out to other men in a deep way.At minimum, this is discouraged and doesn't fit with our model of a man as a lone cowboy or the stereotype of being strong and silent.
3-0 out of 5 stars Old News
As a New Warrior entering the final phase of his Integration Group experience, I bought this book to use as a source for group exercises. I was disappointed to learn that there are few exercises fully explained in the book that we haven't already covered in the first two cycles of the I-group. There is a comprehensive list of ideas for group exercises but that hardly seems worth the price of the book. We all have ideas, but what is needed are practical and in-depth suggestions for their implementation. I would recommend this book only to men who are not involved with the New Warrior Training Adventure. If you are a New Warrior, you will experience in your I-group everything this book has to offer, so save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas in this book
Don't be shy about calling yourself a "MAN".In a group of men, don't say "we are a group of people", instead say "we are a group of MEN!"At the end of a prayer, don't just say "Amen", say "a-MEN!"This book emphasizes not only the step-by-step instructions on forming a men's group, but also how to recognize yourself as a MAN and everything that makes you a MAN.And yes, that includes what you "feel" as well as what you "think".

Kasl does a good job of painting a broad picture which posits the pathway to spiritual enlightenment is broad and that there arwe many roads that can get us there.Unfortuantely, too often she falls back on that pseudo-intellectual - new agey - warrior princess stuff that died out in the early 90s.
5-0 out of 5 stars 16 Steps vs 12 Steps For the Spiritually Abused
The 16 Steps help move people who have moved to [Stage 4: Late Adolescence and Early Adulthood, The Critic: Ages sixteen - twenties and thirties] of their faithing (journey of faith) and are no longer dependent on a traditional 12 Step program. They have moved past a dependency level of a Program to one of personal empowerment and one that honours their own wisdom & internal strength. Dependency on an external set of rules or dogma needs to be replaced thusly if one is going to grow & mature into someone with a healthy ego that has an autonomy balanced with interdependency. Such a program of 16 Steps that moves beyond the rigid 12 Step program is necessary to develop a person's God-given potential here and now. Through such a program, people will be empowered to find their own unique place in the Universe. Instead of rigidity to a traditional 12 Step mantra, they will be encouraged to think for themselves and question those things that don't "feel" right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clarification to comments by "Ken"
The section of the book that the reviewer is referring to is a quote from a member of my men's group, and not about myself. However, it is important that readers understand that for many different reasons, people are unable to face the realities of their abuse and as a result may inadvertently put loved ones at risk. This is unfortunately an all-to-common consequence of all forms of child maltreatment. It is not constructive to judge their actions in the past, but to help them change for the present and future. What was important for this particular man, was that he did ultimately face his problems and heal not only his own wounds, but his relationship with his son.He struggled for many years and his hard work ultimately paid off.Today, he has a wonderful relationship with his son and his new grandchildren.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
Dan Jay Sonkin Ph.D should not be trying to guide adult males of childhood abuse.I purchased this book thinking "finally a book written for men that would be a perfect guide to self help".I made it to page 38 when I realized that this Ph.D should not be trying to write anything but his resignation in his trade.Dr. Sonkin betrayed his son by permitting a man who abused him as a child, to become close to his son.On page 38Dr. Sonkin own admission was that he never told his wife, or anyone else for that matter that he was abused sexually by his uncle. In Dr. Sonkin's stupidity he permitted a sexual predator (his Uncle) to become close to his son, and of course his son was also sexually abused by the same uncle. I am surprised that Dr. Sonkins wife didn't divorce him; and I am amazed that he can look his son in the eyes.Dr. Sonkin didn't have the courage to stand up to his Uncle like a grown adult male, he didn't have the courage to tell his wife what his uncle did to him as a child, and instead he was a coward that cost his son his innocence.Hang it up Doc, how dare you try to guide other men, when you can't even guide yourself.

Typical California feel good self-help schlok. Blaming the victim for not getting in touch with his feelings earlier (and of course not paying someone like Sonkin to "help"). Generally muddled pablum. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed in this book. I was looking for a self-help book for a family member who has not yet consented to attend AA.The foreword alone is insulting and I know they would never get past that before laying the book down. It is dry and difficult reading. It took the author three chapters and a graph to explain that an alcoholic has to drink more and more to feel better and sinks further into depression each time. Why not just say it. Maybe this book is intended more for the person studying alcoholism, not living with it. Clinical studies and statistics won't put them on the road to recovery. I'm glad I read it first. If this was the first book I got them to read, it would be the last.

5-0 out of 5 stars catchy cover for the problem drinker in your home
The problem drinker took it to work the very next day as I had "left" it on the coffee table without saying a word. Another bookreccommend is Am I or am I not an alcoholic? I read him a chapter before he goes to his game. He doesn't verbally fight with me about reading it like I thought he would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important and helpful
This is a simply written, clear explanation of the disease of alcoholism. It is very difficult to understand the compulsion to drink if you haven't experienced it firsthand. This book will help those trying to understand the struggle, as well as those unsure if they are in the struggle.I also recommend it to non-recovering clinicians who are dealing with addicts in their work ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for recovery not written by Bill W.!
Outstanding recovery book.Definitely deserving of a second and third read, every other year or so.Really helped me becasue I could relate, especially in the "family" aspect.Buy another copy to give away because your copy will be full of highlights!
5-0 out of 5 stars There's More to Quitting Drinking Than Quitting Drinking
Dr. Paul probably had more information on alcoholism and drug addiction than anyone on the planet, including the founders of AA. His information on the 12 Steps, a Higher Power and the phases he went through are more than helpful to people having a difficult time identifying their problems. I recommend this book to anyone not only having an addiction or drinking problem, but also anyone knowing or caring for someone with same.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Trove of Gems!
This is a "must read" book for couples in recovery. In fact, despite the title, any couple can benefit from the wisdom contained in its pages.Dr. Paul, as many know, authored the original "Page 449" sentiments found in the third edition of "Alcoholics Anonymous" (also known as the "Big Book" of A.A.).In this book he expands his thoughts and intentions to cover the way he and his wife of 55 years incorporated the principles and traditions of the A.A. way of life into their relationship.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely wistful yet basic
I think this book is extremely wistful. It elaborates on the obvious which is that alcohol or drugs are not the problem....it is the feeling that makes one want to use them. The discovery of the issues and then learning some new tools as to how to manage them will erradicate the need for alcohol or drugs. Also, the book discusses how one must be very careful as to how we define ourselves as that can affect our self esteem and future choices (for example saying I am Julie and I am an alcoholic). This book describes a program in which the "user" is not being punished but rather becomes enlightened so that there really can be a cure rather than a "white knuckling" through life on life's terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prentiss is enlightening, and captivating on our nation's growing problem with alcohol and drug addiction.
In his book, The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure: A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery, Chris Prentiss exposes the myth of alcoholism as a life-long addiction. His sparkling new concepts literally blast away what he calls 'the stagnation that has clogged the minds of millions, and prevented people from seeing what was right in front of their eyes all along:that alcoholism and addiction are not diseases, they are not even the problem' Chris Prentiss is cofounder and co-director with his son, Pax, of Passages Malibu Drug Rehab, the world's most successful treatment program for reversing alcoholism and drug dependency. His book has dramatically turned around the lives of hundreds of alcohol-dependent and drug-dependent people. The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure contains the incredible program to total recovery that is the basis of the miraculous success of Passages. For the first time, this book reveals:
