5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Overeaters
At last!A book written for people who are addicted to food and who are sick to death of diets, support groups, meetings and excuses. This book teaches you how to recognize the addictive voice inside of you and become master over it.AVRT, or Addictive Voice Recognition Technique, truly gives the power and control back to YOU.This recognition, as well as applying, what the Trimpey's refer to as T.A.P.S. is all you'll ever need again to lose all your excess weight.TAPS stands for Time - Amount - Place - Stuff. Setting rules about the time you eat, the amount you eat, where you eat (never in the car or in front of the TV, etc.), and of course, the "stuff" you eat, all in conjunction with making the "Big Plan" (i.e., I Will Always Eat Correctly) really, really works.I read this book, applied the AVRT to my life, and the weight has just melted off.The best part?I did not diet nor will I ever again. Now that I can recognize the addictive voice which screams for more food, especially when I don't need it, I know that I will never have to struggle with fatness again.I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A different point of view on the concept of "Food Addiction"
This book turns the 12 step recovery movement as applied to overeaters on it's head. The Trimpey's are most known for their opposition to Alcoholics Anonymous and similar 12 step programs; Overeater's Anonymous is the same program used in AA, only applied to "food addiction".The first step of Overeater's Anonymous is to admit that one is "powerless" over his/her compulsion to overeat; that overeating is a lifelong "disease" that will never be cured. Only by working the 12 step program and attending meetings for life can anyone begin to approach "recovery".The Trimpey's argue that this belief system is irrational and ultimately unhelpful to the overeater. The book outlines some key "Philosophy of Fatness" (irrational beliefs) that helps to keep us overeaters fat. Some of these beliefs are the following:5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Approach for an Age-old problem
The Trimpeys aren't going to be popular among all the myriad therapists, treatment centers, fat farms, diet gurus and "experts" like Susan Powter and Richard Simmons who are making fortunes at the expense of desperate dieters. What this book manages to so ably point out is that every person who has successfully lost weight and kept it off permanently did so from a Big Plan - NOT through the "support" of any group such as Weight Watchers, Overeaters Anonymous or the like.It was an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE backed up by individual effort and initiative. The Trimpeys help the reader find that motivation and reinforce the will to recover from binge eating by recognizing and seeing through the Voice of Fatness. While there are no easy answers or magic pills, there IS a rational choice which we can learn to make for ourselves.By debunking the irrational beliefs surrounding compulsive eating, discarding worthless theories about the origins of our problems, and directly confronting that internal voice masquerading as our own mind we can triumph over the whole kit and kaboodle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to start the day
I purchased the book, FOOD FOR THOUGHT, a few years ago.Elizabeth L. knows what she is talking about. I read a daily meditation each morning and always find something in the writing that pretains to me. If you suffer from compulsive overeating, buy FOOD FOR THOUGHT.It's very inspirational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful and Supportive
This book has been a great support for me. I often go back to passages over and over. It is supportive and written in a positive manner. It addresses motivation, making mistakes, forgivness, you name it. I knowpeople that use this book for mediations even if they aren't over eaters. Ihighly, highly recommend this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to the Monomaniacal School of historiography
"Forces of Habit: Drugs and the Making of the Modern World" by David T. Courtwright (Harvard University Press, 277 pp, $24.95) is a vivid account of the global spread of psychoactive drugs over the last 500 years. The University of North Florida historian defines drugs broadly enough to include not just the usual suspects like heroin and marijuana, but also generally legal drugs such as tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.
5-0 out of 5 stars History That's NOT Dull
What fun this book is! Too bad all history books are not so entertaining and informative. We might all benefit from understanding the history of the economics and culture that underpin drug trafficking in the 21st century. If history and economics were always written in such an engaging way, nobody would ever flunk out of History 101 or find it boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars More information than I thought possible
I'm an obscure history buff and when I saw this one it piqued my interest. This is part history, part science and part sociology and the author makes this a more interesting subject than I thought it could be. He starts off with what he calls the Big Three: Alcohol, Tobacco and Caffiene. From there he breaks it further down citing the most popular and not so popular illegal drugs. Mentioning natural stimulants that are unfamiliar to most, such as Qat, Kava and Betel and the very descriptive reasons on why they did not take to popular consumption.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Addiction isn't the answer to the "whys"!
To J. Hanson,
1-0 out of 5 stars Walk a Mile in my Moccasins
Why would a skid row alcoholic CHOOSE to live (and eventually die) in that condition? Why would an otherwise caring mother CHOOSE to abandon/sell/prostitute her kids for drug money? Why would a decent, hardworking father CHOOSE to gamble away his life's work and his family's security?
5-0 out of 5 stars excellent choice to read
fact filled book backing the fact that peoples choices have a direct impact on their life.Having a wife who has been in AA for over a year as well as psychological and psychiatric help for 4 years and with no positive changes, I can attest that she is good at going to her meetings and thoroughly enjoys the acceptance for her behavior found at the cult. She commisurates with others in her feelings of being defective, powerless and helpless. The 2 boys we have have been negleted even more now and now my wife feels that God will look out for us.She continues to transfer her dependency to the AA group, the bed and TV. The book makes it clear that people make choices good and bad.People choose to be lazy ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A time-tested classic
Working in the field of alcohol abuse and prevetion for over ten years, I consider this a valuable reference in my library.Kinney and Leaton explain concepts in easy to understand terms while not skimping onnecessary details. There are often comic drawings in the margins whichhumorously go to the heart of the topic; instead of belittling the topics, these drawings serve to bring the topics to life.Currently working as atrainer, I find myself often going back to this book for reminders andclarifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text
Loosening the Grip is comprehensive in its coverage of a broad range of aspects of alcohol use as well as alcoholism. It reviews historical perspectives, etiology of disease, medical aspects and special populations, and in its 6th edition, has remained abreast of scientific and culturalchanges in the field of alcoholism treatment. It has a reader friendlyappearance, using cartoons metaphorically to emphasize points. Very usefulall-around info on the subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Politics of Consciousness
What if you could take a pill or otherwise ingest some substance that would make you see your whole world totally differently than you have seen it before? How do you think your life would change, or would you be any different at all?
5-0 out of 5 stars It pulls all of the loose ends together
The author takes the reader on a fascinating journey to visit the people, places, and cultures of the psychedelic movement. This book contains interesting inside information about Albert Hoffman, Aldous Huxley, Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert, Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg, Neal Cassady, Ken Kesey, Owsley, and a myriad of minor players whose names are fading into history. The story is chronicled from the Swiss Labs where LSD was first discovered to its legitimate use in the psychiatric profession to the artistic salons of the 50's to Harvard to the native villages of Mexico to Leary's temporary home at the Millbrook mansion to Kesey's Prankster hang-out in La Honda to the Haight-Ashbury to the streets of America. An enjoyable peek into diverse cultures from the psychiatric clinicians to world renowned authors and artisans to the faculty of Harvard and Berkley to pre-Columbian mushroom cults to the Beat poets to the Hell's Angels to the Hippies. It is The Doors of Perception, The Psychedelic Experience, On the Road, Howl, Holy Goof, Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and Living with the Dead all rolled into one. Exhaustively researched, a very entertaining read from front to back. Like the era that it chronicles, I hated for the book to end.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Turn On" To This Fascinating Book!
I was born in 1960, so I was a little to young to appreciate the "Summer Of Love", Haight-Ashbury and the entire late 60's counter-culture movement. My fascination with that era began with Jimi Hendrix and other musicians associate with it. Most of the social aspects I was aware of were written by the "slanted" view of the media, teachers, politicians and parents; not the most objective of viewpoints Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arguing strenuously against the "war on drugs" mentality
The Survival Of The Coolest: An Addiction Memoir is the true story of one of the great-great grandsons of Charles Darwin, his addiction to heroin, near-death experiences, and eventual treatment and recovery. Arguing strenuously against the "war on drugs" mentality that pervades today, The Survival Of The Coolest tells of a life where drugs were an effect, not the cause of the author's severe problems. An invaluable, soul-baring personal testimony of descent and redemption, offering a real-world viewpoint of the problem of drug addiction from one who has been there firsthand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Addiction tale with a positive outcome
As a Darwianian scholar, I'm always fascinated by anything Darwin, so I picked up this book. William Pryor, Darwin's great-great grandson grew up in a world of priveldge that few will ever comprehend. Yet he felt empty and his search for fulfilment and identity took him into the world of hardcore drug addiction at the height of the beatnik movement. He 'hung out' with some of the biggest names in rock and roll forever searching for the illusive answers. When he finally hit rock bottom, and opted for a 'clean' life he found at least a portion of the identity he had been seeking. His recovery has allowed him to build a successful business career as a renowned entrepreneur in Britain and gives him the right to discuss drug-addiction and recovery from a vantage point that few of us ever want to know. This book should be required reading by all those in the recovery field and anyone who was ever baffled by the illure of illicet drugs. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Little new here
Most likely anyone who's been around the rooms on a regular basis for more than a few months has heard most of what is in here...And that which they haven't heard is otherwise predictable. Unfortunately, most "recovery humor" is best suited to the feeble and middle brow humor of 60's and 70's Readers Digest, and this book is no exception. It's just plain corny and it's really not very funny. Addiction and recovery can be so dark and edgy; it would be nice to see some of that reflected in the literature and humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dont take yourself so seriously.
A lot of funny items within the book.It is a really great way of carrying the AA message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and touching
I just read this book and find it not only funny but thought provoking. It made me think of some of the things that were going through my head early in my recovery. As a recovering addict/alcoholic I find it refreshing that someone besides myself can find humor in some of the past (and sometimes present) behaviors. I would highly recommend this book to other people in recovery. ... Read more
