5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Not only is this book give good information on the subject of addiction but abuse and child development as well. It re-defines addiction as a means to cope with trauma and traumatic childhood. This is a must read for anybody in the mental-health care related field or anyone with addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and informative
Tian Dayton's book is a long overdue treatise on the results of trauma on the human psyche written for the average reader with good science behind it.Her book is different fromother self help books in that it appeals both to the emotions (needed for change) and the intellect. Often on the journey to personal growth we forget one or the other.Dayton has not forgotten their importance.Judith S. Lavendar, MA

5-0 out of 5 stars Facing the Truth
Tian Dayton has written a very powerful and insightful book on Trauma and Addiction,as they seem to go hand in hand. After reading this book I see the truth about my life and that I did not grow up in a Leave It To Beaver family. Many patterns and behaviors in my family were right on the pages of the book, so reading this has uncovered memories that have been deeply buried for a long time. This book illustrates the healing power of psychodrama and therapy, offering the reader hope and ways for breaking the cycle of pain. It takesa lot of work and courage to go back and acknowledge some of the pains of our past but its worth the freedom from thenightmares that continually haunt us causing repeated pain in our present relationships with others and ourselves. I highly recommend this book if your doing inner work and are ready to look, see and grow forward. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars End time drug
Awesome book. This isn't your Dad's 12 step program! Meth is a poison straight out of hell. Want free, inside and out? Dr. Mary Holley's book breaks down the drug first from a scientific aspect then from a spiritual aspect. There are many ways to try to stop using drugs but the only true way to be free from this death is through the cleaning power of Jesus Christ. Dr. Holley's Book is a perfect guide to freedom and redemption. Thank you Dr. Holley for your commitment and obedience. God bless you! (Eph 6:12)

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling and personal look at the tragedy of meth abuse
The author is not only a medical doctor, but she has firsthand experience with losing a brother to suicide and methamphetamine abuse. Powerful and compelling, she leaves no stone unturned in her exploration of this awful drug. Her mention of Biblical passages is hardly 'in-your-face' as some have described it. She is simply sharing her own beliefs as every author on the planet does. She is gentle and compassionate throughout the text, and was probably the only reason her brother lived as long as he did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Meth Intervention Specialist
Crystal Meth: They Call It Ice is the most compelling and definitive understanding available on the scourge of methamphetamine addiction. Having done extensive research myself and worked personally with many meth addicts and their families these past years Dr. Mary Holley certainly knows the meth journey inside-out. Her medical expertise is invaluable information to anyone connected to meth. The clear explanations of the biochemistry and neurological destruction of methamphetamine is a must read. This work also rightly understands the relational component to sustained recovery from meth. Whether one would agree or not that Christian faith is the key to sustained sobriety my own work with meth addicts agrees with Dr. Holley that change "only" take place in the context of meaningful relationship. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging and full of hope
Sheryle writes a creative, heart-rending story of her battle with anorexia and bulimia and the spiritual revelation that saved her life. She transparently shares her jagged journey from bondage to freedom in a way that those who struggle with this frightening disorder will identify with. Her questions for journaling are as good as hours of therapy. Once I started reading, I could hardly put it down. I heartily recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hail to the Power of Women
One of my best friends recommended this book to me last winter. She said she carried hers everywhere she went even when she traveled. It brought her peace especially after the death of her mother. It is a wonderful book for women. Each day (it's a daily reflection) offers an inspiring quote, a powerful meditation and an encouraging affirmation. The book reflects the individuality and spirituality of women and the importance of their self esteem. It's funny to me that the right words always seem to appear on the page just when I need to read them for that extra boost. ... As a heroin addict I loved this book, I read it over and over the stories were very real and the information very correct, I highly recommend this book to anyone... esp if you are a family member of an addict, an addict or work in the field of addiction, I myself have spent 28 days at The Betty Ford center, in addition to at least 39 other programs so I have a fair amount of knowledge of the subject and I still learned much from this book.

I've read this book twice now.The first time I was still using and the second when I quit.It was a very comprehensive guide and I'm so glad I bought it.Thanks so much for the help Jerry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jerry Dorsman is a professional, and his book can help you!
I've worked with Jerry Dorsman closely, and I wanted to share with you my personal high regards for Jerry Dorsman and his new book "How to Quit Drugs for Good".I was fortunate enough to see Jerry apply many ofthe methods he details in his book with real people in real settings. Jerry is not a one-track thinker and is aware that different strokes workfor different folks. The purpose of his book is to highlight the wholespectrum of treatments available for addictions so that the reader canbetter select a treatment more suitable to their unique needs. It is acomprehensive manual that goes into detail about all drugs, their effects, and effective treatments and therapies available. One would do very wellin selecting this book to help themselves or as a manual in helping othersin the field of addictions treatment.I found his first book "How toQuit Drinking Without AA" an essential tool in my own counselingexperiences. It was so incredibly useful from a concrete treatmentperspective that I referenced it in my own treatment plan development.Isaw great results, and I stand by that. That's all I needed to see. Now Irecommend all his books, because he cuts right to the chase without all thefluff. When you're in trouble, you don't want to waste time. You want toknow what to do and how as soon as you can. This book is not the cure, butit's the best stepping stone to the cure only you can provide.Trust me onthis! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues
From binge eating to obesity, Americans are more obsessed with weight than ever - yet diets and food logs often prove impossible to stick with. Try another approach with THE APPETITE AWARENESS WORKBOOK, promoting appetite awareness training as a solution to weight struggles. Learn to recognize the body's natural - and real - hunger cues, and differentiate these from other non-hunger cues in a title which shows how to link emotional eating habits with more sensible routines. The workbook approach lends especially well to home use.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is ground-breaking
It seems easy to say "Eat when you are moderately hungry and stop eating when you are moderately full." Well, then why don't we all eat that way? Because many of us often eat "recreationally" (my word). I know that my eating often has less to do with hunger and more to do with what time it is, what yummy thing is in front of me, how bored I am, or how emotionally stressed I am.
2-0 out of 5 stars So Disappointed
I bought 3 books on this subject this week, and this is the one I wish I hadn't bought. I am so disappointed in this book. I was expecting a true workbook, and there is no real plan in this book. There is a lot of interesting information, some of which is useful, but if I hadn't also bought The Seven Secrets of Slim People, I wouldn't have gotten a plan to actually do the work I need to do to be able to find out when I'm hungry and when I need to stop eating. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers
This was eye opening. I am the family member of an alcoholic and this book tells the truth about addiction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for addicts/alcoholics and their families
This book is written in a simple question and answer format. This helps make important information very understandable. The book covers both alcoholism and drug addiction and basically, they are the same disease since alcohol is a drug. What Dr. West makes clear is that addiction is a life long battle. Even after years of recovery, relapsing is possible. Accordingly, it is essential to attend AA meetings or NA meetings even after years of sobriety. If you learn only one thing from this book, it should be that recovery never ends and that, therefore, the alcoholic must never again have a drink and that the addict must never again try any kind of mood altering drug, regarless of whether that drug is legal or not.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Life was Saved
During Family week at the BFC I sat in a lecture conducted by Dr. West. It was during this informal lecture that I came to the reality that I had all of the characteristics of an alcoholic and was in need of help to save my life just as much if not more than the family member I was there for. The main item in the "Book of Answers" that made me realize this, among other things, is listed on pages 20-21. Dr. West reviewed them and realized I had most of the attributes of an alcoholic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important addition to the clinical literature on compulsive eating
American women and girls (and, increasingly, men and boys) are bombarded with messages about ideal bodies and acceptable weights, "good" and "bad" foods and the health risks of "obesity." Toss in the wealth of other stresses related to contemporary life and a recipe for disordered eating is born.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for clinicians AND clients
This book is beautifully written and an easy read for clinicians as well as clients. In a very straightforward yet well researched manner, the authors excel at addressing issues related to eating, self-esteem and the fallacy surrounding "diets."Via poignant case examples and theoretical applications, this book is an outstanding resource that should be on every therapist's (and client's!) shelf. In addition, this book pushes clinicians to be aware of their own internalized ideas and issues related to weight. 5-0 out of 5 stars The science of addiction
Dr. Dupont is the former head of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (part of the National Institutes of Health). He presents the science of addiction and recovery in a way that anyone can understand. This book was recommended to me by a former private patient of Dr. Dupont's, who had nothing but good things to say about him. I thought the book was excellent, and it really explains what works and why.

5-0 out of 5 stars developed by Stanford graduates students
Believe it or not this important topic in applied statistics was developed by Hastie and Tibshirani when they were graduate students, a sure sign of greatness to come. After their graduation this highly acclaimed book came out explaining both the theory and pratice of generalized additive models in a clear and concise way. Generalized additive models are similar to generalized linear models in their additive structure but the form of the additive functions is much more general.5-0 out of 5 stars A complex topic made readable.
A medical doctor recommended that I (a statistician) use generalized additive models on a project that he was involved with. We were pleased with the results of the modelling as they gave us some new insights on histopic and it was very rewardingRead more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive text for medical management of addictions
This year, I needed a comprehensive text to help me put together a lecture on substance use disorders for psychiatrists taking their board exams. It had been some time since I, a psychologist who conducts research on co-occurring disorders, had updated myself generally on current knowledge regarding substance use disorders. This text was very useful for this purpose; I can see it being a useful reference guide for medical practioners concerned with treating those with substance use disorders. I found Schuckit's classification of substances by their effects (depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens) rather than trying to present information on similar-acting drugs individually (cocaine, amphetamines) particularly useful. The chapters are concise and well-written and loaded with details as noted by the previous reviewer.
