4-0 out of 5 stars Intro to History, Uses & Properties of Psychoactive Drugs.
"From Chocolate to Morphine" (2004 edition) attempts to be a basic encyclopedic reference of psychoactive drugs and their uses, whose goal is to provide objective information on the risks and benefits of prescription, over-the-counter, illegal, and natural drugs for a modern audience living in a very drug-soaked society. The authors, Dr. Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen, are forthright about their perspective: "We cannot say that we have no biases about drugs, but we think that we know what our biases are." They don't generally encourage or discourage recreational drug use. Instead, they repeatedly emphasize the necessity of education and avoiding dependency if one is to use drugs beneficially. I say "generally", because the authors' tone betrays obvious disdain for a few drugs and affection for some others.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not for kid's education!
This book was recommended to me as an educational tool for my pre-teen children...NO WAY! I felt like the book did not address the dangers of the drugs at all. In fact, if anything, I would want to try some of the drugs after reading about them (if I didn't know better)!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unbiased account from a heavy player in this arena
I bought this book for information on the subject upon which i like to study, hallucinogens, specifically tryptamine hallucinogens. Andrew Weil in this book does cover almost every drug, either legal or illegal, and in an unbiased fashion, noting the Pro's and Con's of each drug, namely dependence, affects, pharmacological uses etc.. On each drug, he explains the legality of them, thorougly, and where they fit in to society, which is important that i feel many other authors of the same subject have absent from their works, specifically speaking. One phrase Weil says which i think has immense credibility, is "There is no such thing as a bad drug, just bad relationships with drugs" and this book is riddled with phrases keyed to that effect. It is important to realize that people make decisions based on the basis of the information available to them, and we are in a sitiuation of propaganda, ill information for the reasons clandestine. This book very well puts all cards on the deck, and voices its opinion with no preconceived consequences for the information put forth. This book is up with Food of the Gods - Terence Mckenna and other books which have penetrated the thick barrior of governmental consequences. Highly recommended for those just getting interested in subjects which pertain to altered states of consciousness, student and teacher alike! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great author, but watch for errors...
This author writes on this subject in an informative and unbiased way.I am a nursing student and this kind of knowledge is essential. Especially since I will probably end up working in an Emergency Department or as a Psych Nurse.I could only give it 3+ stars.I couldnt give it 4 or 5 stars as I did find some technical errors. Also some of the information presented does not clarify somethings, which could lead someone to a misconception. But all in all this is a book I would recommend to students of health professions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars First, We are Victims
This book encourages victimhood. We are overweight because we live in a man's world. So carry around a feed-bag and soothe your anger.
5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
How to begin? This book is a sanity saver for me.I am coming out of the world of bingeing/restriction/compulsive overeating. Finally, I am on my way to a healthy relationship with food. And no, I haven't gained tons of weight in the legalization phase... about 6 pounds maybe if that... now, the scale is going down as I remind myself that I can eat what I want and when and eat more often from stomach hunger... but using mouth hunger when I need to.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
This book is BRILLIANTLY conceived. It isn't about losing the weight first; it's about learning to love yourself first and unconditionally. What comes after that is your whole LIFE.The diet industry has convinced us that when you lose the weight, then you can/will love yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done, Dr. McCoy!
Professor Alfed McCoy has here rendered a very important contribution to the overall understanding of United States policy in the post-World War II era. This thoroughly documented and well written text illustrates CIA complicity in the narcotics trade from the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia, to the mountains of Afghanistan, and finally to the highlands of the Andes.Other authors who write of CIA complicity in various nefarious deeds seem to cite this important work more than any other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do not support ANY type of prohibition. It supports terror!
1 - Declassified War Documents Korea, US drug smuggling for war effort.
3-0 out of 5 stars Wanted more on the Golden Crescent as well...
The author is no doubt the master of his domain in as far as the Southeast Asia (the Golden Triangle) is concerned, but only 20 or so pages talk about Golden Crescent, while more than 400 pages are about very minutely detailed drug trade (& politics/ economics) of the Golden Triangle. Considering that countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan earn more than $12b in drug trade every year (only about $1b worth foreign exchange in legal exports), the importance of drug money in financing these breeding grounds of terrorism can't be emphasised enough.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
I heard that Robert Sabbag was a good writer so I decided to pick upSnowblind up and read it and I couldn't put it down.I thought that it gave a really close look into the drug trade and it was very detailed so you really got a feel for the life that was lead.I have started reading his books now and I can't stop. I have told many of my friends to read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best.
If we consider Thomas de Quinceys "The COnfessions of an English Opioum Eater", Baudelaires "The Artificial Paradises" and Ludlows "The Hasheesh Eater" the three classical pillars of the drug books, "Snowblind" sets a new way of approaching the theme. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Dated
I enjoyed this book, but it was a slow read.I thought it was interesting how Swan smuggled in the 70's, but I'm sure none of these techniques would work today--if for no other reason, the cocaine-sniffing dogs! The author writes very well, but he was so sharp and witty, that I'm afraid a lot of those witticms flew right over my head, and I had to re-read many times to figure out what was meant, and even then, sometimes couldn't. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ever person over 30 should read this book.......
If you have lived your life in the adult world for any period of time, it's time you read this book.Take a look at your emotions and relationships from a new perspective! This book gives us insight into why we behave the way we do, and then suggests ways to integrate ourselves into a broader perspective that allows us to change those things that are making us unhappy.5-0 out of 5 stars the most lucid book on the basic problem of being human
Jonh Firman's "The Primal Wound" (with help from partner Ann Gila), is definitely not just another self-help book. It is the book toread if you want to understand the deep dynamics of growing up and thewounds or the primal wound that you carry.Using the wonderfullypost-Jungian model of Psychosynthesis, Firman details in clear and simplelanguage the development of wounds and how they create a survivalpersonality that is different from one's authentic personality. The book isa gem, full of ideas from amny sources. The integration of them will causetranspersonal theorists to take a closer look at what psychosythesis theoryhas to offer. This book shows that it has a lot to offer because it isintegrative and synthesizing in nature. This dynamic is part of thestructure of Psychosynthesis and Firman's book proves that we haven't heardthe last of him. There is a wealth of material here and wisdom as powerfulas it gets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is sometimes hard to take
Yes, this book claims that eating disorders are rooted in sinful behavior. Now don't let this put you off. The author does at no point condemn those suffering from anorexia, bulimia, over-eating etc. Quite contrary, Elyse Fitzpatrick's way of approaching God's truth (the only Truth for any Christian) is understanding, warm and supportive. Her style is easy-to-read and backed with examples from her own life. Still, no author can change the truth about eating disorders. They are sin. Or does anyone seriously think that starving God's temple and idolizing food are in line with God's will? I fully agree that this truth is hard to take once you have to realize your share in your behaiour, but Fitzpatrick doesn't leave the reader at this point. She is not the one with the raised index finger making the reader feel bad about herself or himself. Again, she does the opposite by showing how we need to rely on Christ to fight this sinful behavior, by showing what thoughts and mechanisms lead to eating disorders and how we can face them with our hearts turned to the Lord. Don't be afraid to read this book because you might feel you are just being told that it is all your fault and to get on with life.Instead, be ready to meet a sometimes painful truth and an answer full of hope and truth. And let me add: this book gives excellent advice for how to cope in everyday life. Knowing that Christ is the answer is one thing, but Fitzpatrick provides practical advice for the compulsions and urges we need to fight every single day. Has this book cured me from my ED? No. It still is a fight. But in contrast to the time before I read the book, I am now ready and well-equipped for the fight and I grow more successful every day.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
I was really disappointed with this book. had thought the title would mean it would give more practical advice.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Christian dogma, little authoritative guidance
Like her fellow misguided evangelical Larry Crabbe, this woman quickly puts the label of "sin" on problems that are more complex.Being told that they are sinners who need to repent is the last thing that people who are struggling with eating disorders need to hear.I think it is this belief about themselves that drives many of them to eating disorders in the first place. The book just pushes evangelical Christian dogma without seeking a proper understanding of the issues it discusses. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean
With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - the authors have an in depth view of the disease
Dying to be Thin helped me in ways beyond measure. I knew that a lot of what I was doing to my body was destructive, but only after reading the book did I want to seek help to end the disease- or try to at least. A big thank you and hugs to the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book. It gave me the courage to quit.
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who suffer from anorexia or bullemia.I purchased this book at the height of mydisease in 1997 and it gave me the courage to quit. The stories are realand so easy to relate to.I cried through half the book realizing howpathetic I was.I would love to someday personally thank the authors... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book
I don't usually write reviews about books, but I felt obligated to write a review for this one. The book not only gives great advice about eating, but also great general advice for everyday life. The book is well-written and reads like a novel. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful & Inspirational Book of Overeaters!
Wow-this book really encouraged me in my journey with compulsive overeating. It is a terrific resource for the beginner all the way to the fully recovered! Written from an insider's perspective, this book is sure to comfort, encourage, and strengthen overeaters and/or those who love them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Having been with someone with several addictions - I got into reading self help books - this one I rate VERY highly - it explains well the trouble in recovery from addiction - covers drugs, alcohol and other addictions.Drew Pinsky is brilliant making it into a story of his life in treating patients with various problems.
3-0 out of 5 stars Addiction smoke and mirrors
I have this book and I listen to Dr. Drew almost every week. I like him and I like most of what he says. On the other hand, he always seems to think that every adult life problem can be reduced back to some "abuse" during childhood. It is like a broken record. Someone calls his show and he "spot diagnoses" them in like 6 seconds as a child abuse "survivor". It is almost like self-parody.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very compassionate work
I must say that I was incredibly impressed with this book. Having enjoyed Dr. Drew on Loveline and on his new round of shows on the Discovery Health Channel, I figured I'd like this book - I was right. It shows not only the struggle of his patients, but also his struggle as a doctor, showing compassion for not only his job but for his patients. The subject matter all in all is actually very uplifting and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually Five-Plus Stars !!
This workbook is the best cognitive approach (CBT) to recovery that I have read so far. Outstanding and easy to comprehend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful beyond addiction issues
I found this book to be a helpful and useful way to look at one's self not only in the context of alcoholism or addiction, but in the context of life in general. This book comes from a very positive or affirming perspective, encouraging us to forgive ourselves, let go of the past, and take the steps to write our own script for the future.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you are feeling lost and bad about yourself
I love to read and re-read this book. It's not just about being sober, it's about being human. I feel like I have a personal private therapy session every time I pick up this book to read various passages. It is like you are being personally addressed and all your issues are diminished and you get "freed up". I only wish these authors were "on the road" giving seminars or something but, alas, don't find anything online about that. A truly, loving, supportive, forgiving friend is found when reading these pages. Thank you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Cognative therapy of substance abuse by Aaron T. B
This book is listed as a clinician's handbook to the Cognitive Therapy of substance abuse, however it's contents are readily available to the layman. It is both clear and well referenced and I have found it to be insightfulinasmuch as not being overly obscure in relation to the methods of therapythat fall outside of the Cognitive model. It is presented to define firstwhat cognitive therapy is and how to proceed within it's guidelines andsecondly to define the many concurrent psychological states that accompanythe problems of the substance abuser. Whereas I am not a professional inthis field I must admit that occasionally the text goes beyond my technicalability to comprehend it, however most of what is offered is assessable andunderstandable without being a trained professional. Would I suggestreading this book if you are not a professional? Only if you already havean interest or need surrounding the subject matter. I do not think thatthis particular read is for casual or recreational reader, however if youfind yourself needing to know more about the cognitive therapy of substanceabusers, then this book is a must. Would I suggest reading this book if youare a professional? 1-0 out of 5 stars Just gets better with age
The original Trimpey cult item, now disavowed. But it's just as valuable as it ever was. Very amusing take on AA ... having almost nothing to do with the facts ... Jack don't like facts ... Jack does love his opinions.Don't bother to purchase. Just step over to the nearest bar ... and don't drink. Try it again and again. Just say no. Just don't drink. Now wasn't that easy?

2-0 out of 5 stars Superseded
Like the person from Anchorage implies, The Small Book has been superseded by Trimpey's book, "Rational Recovery..."Trimpey has disavowed The Small Book, because he added new concepts and abandoned others (e.g., the Rational Recovery system no longer has support groups). In fact, Trimpey states on his website that he wishes he could pull The Small Book from publication, but he is powerless to do so.Buy the Rational Recovery book instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving My Son
This book has done more to save my son, who has been a drug addict for the last 10 years, than all three of the rehab clinics and AA meetings combined. For the first time in years, he is actually thinking positive and feeling good about himself. He also encouraged me to read it too.It is a great book for anyone, whether you are an addict or not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take comfort in self-understanding (rather than in food!)
I always take a deep breathe before looking at a new book on controlling compulsive urges ... expecting either to be lectured at, made to feel guilty, or told a simple formula doomed to fail!Denise's book is very different and refreshing. The answer is not "less," but more:insight and healthy pleasures, as we learn to comfort ourselves in deeper and more longlasting ways. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight for the intelligent reader
Loved this book, I have not read the author's first book, but that did not present any problems.Susan Nolen-Hoeksema offers some very plausible reasons for overeating/drinking in women. Her theories make sense and while I know quite well that there is no "magic pill" for this problem, I feel the info she offers gives me some tools to understand the problem and how I can better help myself. My one criticism of the book would be that I don't recollect any suggestions that the reader supplement the book by working with a psychotherapist trained in women's disorders. For most women, this would be crucial to the healing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Women Who Suffer In Silence
I love the fact that this book was written and done so well. This subject is very dear to me - as I am a product of a family of women who suffered from this toxic triangle. The legacy was simply passed down from generation to generation. It was a hard thing to watch - and was a major reason why I chose to be a therapist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff from a Great Psychologist
When I saw that Susan Nolen-Hoeksema had a new book out, I had to take a look.Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema is well known to me from studying the biology and psychology of depression about ten years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your life back
Hundreds of folks are getting their lives back because of this book. I know, because I own a very active, free Yahoo! message board for all non-dieters. My members come in having read a variety of books on non-dieting. Many of them love to refer to "OO" when sharing their recovery. I am happy to give this book a five star review. -- Linda Moran

5-0 out of 5 stars challenging book
This is the book that had the most deep impact on my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only approach that works in the longrun.
About 8-9 years ago I used this approach to finally establish a healthy relationship to my body and food after years of painful, damaging, obsessive dieting and disordered eating that had taken over my life.Although the approach is scary at first, it's the only one that has ever worked for me.Following yet another diet only perpetuates the underlying problems with food/eating.Although I was panicked at first about gaining weight when all food was allowed, after about a year I was 10-15 pounds lighter than I'd been when I was constantly dieting.I was suprised to find that when I truly listened to and respected my body's hunger and normalized my relationship with food, my body settled into a healthy, lower weight.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting - I loved it!
First, if you have read Dr. Drew's book "Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Back Together" then I would recommend this book if you are further interested addiction.
1-0 out of 5 stars More self promtion andmisinformation
Pinsky should do his reseach better less than 1 % of all paitentsprescibed narcotic pain reliversbecome even close to being addicted. Pinsky would also know that long term use of NSAIDS cause seriousand fatal effects with in a few weeks . He shouldknow the difference between addction a social construct and depandancy a biologicalaction . and psudoaddcition due to the pain reliever not working .
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
I loved Drew's other book, Cracked, and was hoping for some useful information about Oxycontin in here.I do take this drug periodically and was wondering about some of the more odd side effects (hearing issues, sleep disturbances, overheating, and anxiety), and basically just wanted to know all about it from the guy who knows it all. Unfortunately, almost none of the book is about Oxycontin. It mostly details the addiction process and the various detox treatments.Worse, only the very first section is actually written by Drew (!), so this book is a tease if you're even partly in it for him.
