Editorial Review

What makes Claude-Pierre's treatment of anorexia and bulimia revolutionary? Perhaps it's that the astonishingly high success rate of even the most chronic cases at Claude-Pierre's Montreux Clinic (only sufferers near death who have not been helped by doctors and hospitals are admitted) defies the common misconception that eating disorders are incurable. Claude-Pierre has made a personal commitment to dispel this damaging myth. Having cured her own two daughters of anorexia, you might say hers was a vested interest. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Secrets Exposed
Author Claude-Pierre explains in layman's terms the mechanics of eating disorders. This greatly helped me to understand the mindset of the sufferer and seriousness of these types of disorders. The book offers a through explanation of symptoms, who is at risk, treatment, advice and support to family and friends of sufferers. In addition, there are some excellent references for reading materials and websites for help and support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saving
All my life I've hated the way my body looked like.I hated my body so much, that by the age of twelve, I just decided to give up on it.This is when a deep depression set in.I began contemplating suicide, cutting myself, and eating for comfort. As the years passed on with self-destructive behaviors, I gained a good amount of weight.By the age of fourteen I weighted 145 lbs.
1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing
I found this book to be almost annoying in the level of arrogance the author exuded in her writing. She has absolutely no training in psychology apart from the fact that her daughters struggled with eating disorders. This book did not reveal any new insights or cures.I find it appalling how little training she has in the arena of eating disorders and yet feels qualified to open a clinic and write a book. She does not back any of her statements up with scientific data, and the book seems to be trying to sell her clinic more than inform others on how to help those struggling with eating disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Explanation of Alcoholism Neurochemistry and Genetics, Reward Deficiency Syndrome, AlcoholMetabolism , Craving
Alcohol and the Addictive Brain is possibly the best publishedexplanation ofgenetic and neurochemical causes of alcohol dependence, withdrawal and craving. This book explains how genetically susceptible individuals, differ neurochemicallyfrom nonalcoholics, and how alcohol alters dopamine, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and opiate neurotransmitter and neurotransmitter receptor levels.Inherited differences in P300 brainwaves are thoroughly explained. The history of alcohol neurotransmitter research is reported, objectively, with fair consideration given to opposing views. This book is surprisingly readable, considering the complexity of the research it explains.Enkephalinase inhibition treatments, which Blum has refined, are an especially promising possibility for reducing alcohol craving and dependence. The explanation of transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and subsequently to beta carboline, tetrahydroisoquinolines, morphine, codeine and other opiates, remains useful today and helps explain why naltrexone and accupuncture can reduce alcohol craving and consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last a methodologically rigorous study of alcoholism
I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in thebrain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and manytherapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Paynepresent compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurologicaldisorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive!
I Lightly read part of this book when i first began to read about cannabis. Boy oh boy was it a handful. This is a very advanced book. If you are simply a toker then i wouldn't suggest this book, but if you are an advanced grower/breeder this is for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Marijuana (a book for all plant lovers who want advanced material)
To have gone through this book and come out the other side is a profound experience, like some sort of a futuristic biology class that specialized in the stuff that gets you best baked. I would not hesitate to force any kind of plant lover to gravitate towards this book like it was about a rose bush or an apple tree. It is a progressively deeper and meaningful insight into the world of plants and the humans who care for them. On one page we are getting an illustrated history of the evolution of the cannabis plant and on the next page how to use materials to enhance the genes that make flowers big like they where back in the prehistoric ages. It is unparalleled in the way its advanced scientific information is brought out in a practical and applicable manner to your grow. The best part is that we can have it all now. The fact that Greg Green is a cotemporary makes now the best time to repeat what he is advising because you can do it the same way with the same stuff. The evidence is in the book. Nowhere else, anywhere else, has anything, even remotely addressed the kind of topics in this book, let alone experiment and produce consistent results with them. This kind of detail is avant-garde marijuana research. It is influencing and changing the way cannabis cultivation is done on daily bases.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for the amount of information

2-0 out of 5 stars A Preachy Repackaging of 12 Step Recovery
As a director of an outpatient chemical dependency program, I came across this book in my professional life. While the book is well intentioned and covers a wide range of topics about addiction and recovery, I was ultimately quite disappointed in it's presentation. The content is clearly a repackaging of 12 Step (e.g.: Alcoholics Anonyomous) concepts such as acceptance of powerlessness, etc. While this is not by itself a bad thing, the author incessantly uses commanding language beginning with "We need to ..."that many readers, I anticipate, will experience as preaching and condescending. (Implicitly telling the reader: "You need to!") The author places a heavy emphasis on labeling ("alcoholic", "addict") and de-emphasizes a person's ability to be their own agent of change; both contrary to scientific principles about what is effectively in achieving change. Some chapters contain exercises that invite reader participation but the exercises are not well developed and seem secondary to the overall lecturing tone of the material. Those interested in 12 Step recovery might do better to go to the primary sources (AA, NA). Others might seek out material from sources such as Smart Recovery.

This book is written in plain English and is easy to read. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased several copies a had them sent to my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming Naturally Therapeutic
Exceptional.Very practical. The author does a great job giving real examples for each of the therapeutic traits she espouses.I have worked with troubled youth for about 6 years and regularly refer to her book in my work with students and in coaching other staff.Very easy read, easily understandable, and right on the money!A great resource for anyone and everyone who fully engages in relationships with friends, lovers, clients.

5-0 out of 5 stars thoughtful - thorough- practical & compassionate
Ms. Small's book is considered a "classic" in the field of counseling persons with addictive illness for very good reasons. Her writing is very clear, concise, jargon-free (a huge plus in a field wheresome books require a separate glossary to understand the terminology! ),and extremely practical. Her utilization of brief and to-the-point clinicalexcerpts from counseling sessions are always appropriate and are followedup by additional applications. Her chapter on "Confrontation,"will, once and for all, help novice and experienced clinicians understandthat it does not mean dealing with your or the client's anger, lying, transference, etc.; it is simply a way to directly help the other grasp theessence of their beliefs, communication(s) and behavior(s) in non-shamingways. Highly recommended to anyone considering counseling on either side ofthe equation and/or significant others of persons with addictive issues. One of the best i've run across in my 20+ years in the field.Alsorecommended to anyone interested in the qualities of a healer/effectivetherapist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
I recently purchased this book in order to understand the complexity of behavior of certain people. Often times, health professionals make a mistake of targeting only one causative aspect of the problem while either ignoring or not recognizing the other. Ignorance of many psychologists and psychiatrists about dual disorders is due to the rarity of this problem. This book is a must read for both mental health providers and their patients. I also believe that many others will benefit from this book even those who do not show underlying symptoms of this disorder. This book helped me understand the reasons as to why some people seems as if they are not making any effort when they actually are.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading
This book explores the ways in which family members can understand dual diagnosis. It is helpful for the parent who struggles with kids that have really two troubles (addiction and other mental disorders). Dr. Ortman is concise and offers case studies to explore this issue. I would recommend the book to anyone who is struggling themselves with dual diagnosis or has a loved one who suffers from addiction as well as mental illness. It is easy to read even for a lay person and offers helpful ideas for anyone interested in this issue. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book has helped me overcome my bulimia
I received this book while I was in a mental health treatment center as part of my treatment. The title was dorky so it took alot to get me to pick it up, but when I did I was not sorry. In just the introduction alone I found the description of my disordered thoughts and as I read on I found the sources to my bulimic tendencies that tortured me. Im not done with it yet, but every time I read a chapter and fill in the journal I gain a greater understanding of my obsession with food. I recommend this book to anyone, any age, who has ever been concerned with their weight, whether they are terminally ill or just dieting.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best on This Subject
I've given out many copies of this book over the years. It's been the source of profound insight for people coming out of dysfunctional family systems. The first part of the book on "Discovery" seems especially helpful, some of the tecniques in the last "Recovery" part of the book will help some but not all.A "one size fits all" approach will have it's limitations, but this book has been the most useful in shedding light on this pervasive problrem so many have to deal with.

5-0 out of 5 stars A therapist's viewpoint
I refer to this book constantly.First read it in 1987.It provides and excellent tool for educating clients from alcoholic/dysfunctional families. The chapter on chronic shock is particularly enlightening.ACOAs reading it usually have an "aha" experience that leads to understanding and goes a long way toward problem resolution and new coping techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Key to a mystery

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with data-rich insights
I'll admit that any book with the work heresies in the title has an automatic advantage in peaking my interest, but this volume does so much more than merely entice. MacCoun and Reuter have done an amazing job of looking that drug prohibition from a new point of view. Frankly, despite the passage of a few years, I believe that this book is absolute essential if one hopes to really understand the controversy over the War on Drugs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Top quality analysis
The 'War on Drugs' in the United States grew from a million dollar acorn absentmindedly planted by President Nixon to a thriving 18 billion dollar oak three decades on.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Careful and Honest Look at Alternative Drug Policy
"In Drug War Heresies, Robert J. MacCoun and Peter Reuter ask whether drug prohibition makes sense and whether legalization might achieve a better balancing of the costs and benefits associated with drugs and drug policy. They draw on a broad range of social science literature, and they emphasize the lessons provided both by drug prohibition in other places and by prohibitions of other goods, such as alcohol and prostitution. In discussing this evidence, they raise most of the key issues that should be considered in evaluating drug policy. Their book is an excellent starting point for anyone who wishes to understand the debates about prohibition versus legalization.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Courageous and Important Work
Did you know that antidepressant dose reduction and discontinuation can cause severe and debilitating withdrawal reactions? While 10% of the US population are taking antidepressants, most people, including most doctors, have never heard of antidepressant addiction and withdrawal.Glenmullen does a fine job getting the word out about this urgent health crisis. In 2004 Congress had to force the FDA and drug manufacturers to acknowledge the well-established link between antidepressant use and increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors.Glenmullen shows how severe withdrawal symptoms, which can occur within hours of a missed dose, can actually drive a person to suicide. Many face a horrible dilemma when their withdrawal symptoms are misdiagnosed as relapse.Glenmullen must be applauded for taking on his own colleagues, some of whom have accepted huge fees from the drug companies to suppress and misrepressent the severity of antidepressant "discontinuation syndrome."Numerous misdeeds are revealed in Glenmullen's astute analysis, but the book's primary purpose is not critical. He presents a detailed 5 step method for helping those who want or need to stop taking these drugs. The good news, according to Glenmullen, is that patients are "almost always" able to wean off these drugs if the dose is reduced gradually (according to each individual's tolerance) with the vigilant care of a knowledgable doctor who is willing to put in the many weeks, sometimes many months, required. To his credit, Glenmullen explores the limits to his method in the story of Andy, a 16 year old boy, who after a month on Effexor, decided he wanted off, but had to spend a whole year of his young life in hell caught between the side effects and severe withdrawal, despite a painfully slow dose reduction. Glenmullen would like to believe such reactions are rare, but what if they're not?Just because some people can reduce gradually with few problems, does not prove all people can.I am one like Andy.I too took Effexor.I spent 4 months reducing gradually and became so sick and debilitated, I had to quit my job. It's now been 10 weeks since I took my last dose and I am still too sick to function.I'm worried I may have been permanently damaged by this drug.I'm not depressed, but I have considered suicide.I'm a 53 year old woman with no husband or family to support me financially. If I had known when I started this drug 10 years ago that I could become this sick when I gradually reduced and discontinued it, I never would have taken it--but I couldn't have known 10 years ago because back then, the drug companies denied the existence of antidepressant withdrawal and deliberated suppressed and misrepresented the truth. They can't deny it any longer.Babies are being born addicted to Effexor.Their mothers may have known of the dangers, they may have tried to stop, but they couldn't because the withdrawal was too much to bear. These mothers were addicted by prescription with FDA approval. This is a major health crisis, much worse than crack babies.Glenmullen's book doesn't address addicted newborns, but you can read the horrible truth in Wyeth's most recent drug label for Effexor (June 2006, p24). In the debate over the risks and benefits of antidepressants, Glenmullen identifies himself as a moderate. He is, after all, a psychiatrist whose job is to dispense these meds.He deserves credit for trying to help the thousands of desperate victims, but his "solution" may offer only false hope, masking the problem and prolonging the suffering.Eventually the people will come to know the truth about these drugs and they will be banned or boycotted. Then those who have been profitting from the people's suffering will have to undergo their own painful withdrawal--from all that money.

But he fails to mention that SSRIs can cause permanent sexual side effects even after discontinuance. Long overlooked by the medical community. Do google search for details. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wondrous and wild ride
Pete Hamill's memoir of his early days in Brooklyn, his flirting with the visual arts, and his later years as a hard-drinking reporter and writer is brutally honest, evocatively descriptive, and crackles with so much emotion and description that the reader feels as if he's right along with him.

4-0 out of 5 stars New York in the 50's
Pete Hamill is a New Yorker and he explains what it was like to grow up in the 50's.Some of his insights are brillant. For example his discussion of how television changed community life was wonderful. He also points out how a young person could move around the City was nostalgic.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant autobiography of a life in which drinking is pervasive
I picked this up because it was referenced in Caroline Knapp's Drinking: A Love Story, and the two are often cross-marketed on Amazon.com.I was expecting more of a story about alcoholism and specific drunk events in Hamill's life. This is much more than a story about alcoholism, it is a story about Hamill's life, and alcohol just so happens to be pervasive throughout his childhood and adulthood. This is truly a complete picture of a man, of his boyhood in the Neighborhood, his family, marriage, his career, and alcohol touched every aspect of his life.Drinking was a constant throughout Pete's journey--a way to celebrate with friends, a way to get through your anger, a way to be social in the Neighborhood, and a way to relate to your co-workers as a newspaperman. In Hamill's boyhood, it was a point of pride in the Neighborhood to be able to handle your liquor, not to be a drunk, but to keep a steady stream of drinking while trading jokes and stories and songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book on what spirituality REALLY means
Twerski has a very interesting background and training. He was a son of a rabbi, but went to medical school instead and now runs a substance abuse center. This makes him very qualified to talk on the subject of spirituality in recovery, which he does brilliantly in The Spiritual Self.A short book, I consider it a must read for anyone in a 12-step spiritual recovery program (as I am).We always wonder what people mean by saying 'I want to get more spiritual'.Well, the answer is explained eloquently and simply in Twerski's book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wish there had been more details about recovery
This book was in-depth history of her Eating Disorder (140 pages) and a short (40 pages) account of what happened to her during the start of recovery. She talked briefly about therapy. She talked very little about what the recovery felt like and the emotional and physical challenges she faced during recovery. I wish the book had in-depth details about the start of her recovery process, not just the years she suffered. Not a good recovery resource, but it was interesting and honest.Suffering from an Eating Disorder is the worst!

5-0 out of 5 stars courageous and inspirational!
i too suffer from extreme bulimia; i found jocelyn's book to be honest, forthright, and from the heart, and admire her courage in sharing the intimate details of her journey.it was also interestingly written -- i couldn't put it down
5-0 out of 5 stars YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
This is a fabulous, well-written story about the reality of bulimia.I love that the author was so descriptive in both her internal and external struggles while learning to deal with this illness.I also was relieved to find a book that tells the story of a woman with long-term bulimia. She struggled with this illness for many years, and she was still able to work through what she needed to in order to get better. This story describes all the feelings and experiences that go with bulimia, and it is such a wonderful, hope-filled but realistic portrayal of what is going on out there.I was struggling with my illness when I read this book, and it let me know that I was not alone and gave me courage to reach out and get the help I needed because I could see how I viewed Jocelyn for going through her process and I admired that. This is a wonderful, wonderful story. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No Axe To Grind
Clear readable practical education and guidance on dealing with your or your loved one's addiction.Covers all the most important treatment approaches without moralizing and helps you choose what is most helpful or appropriate to your situation. I have already recommended to two patients who both found it tremendously helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the title-This is a really smart book!
The title of this series always turns me off--so formulaic and usually simplistic. But this book is different! The format is simple and the material is presented in the clear, crisp and easily readable style typical of this series but this book is also truly wise, practical and compassionate in its approach. There is up-to-date information on medications, the physiology of addiction, treatments and groups that can offer support to the addicted person and plenty of practical advice for those on the sidelines (family, friends, spouses) who want to help but don't understand the problem. The book makes practical suggestions for treatments/groups that can help, how to deal with relapse cravings and moving forward in life without relying on an ultimately self-destructive habit. I have 30 years of experience as a therapist and this is one of the few selp-help books that I respect. I plan to give it to my clients and to recommend it to colleagues. Buy it---you won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read on addiction--really helpful!
I can't recommend this book too highly. I have been working in this field for years and have searched for a book that would not turn off people struggling to come to terms with addictive problems. This book is easy to read, concise and presented in a manner that invites the reader to stay with the material. In addition to giving great information on the biology of addiction, it is full of excellent suggestions on how to practically go about attacking the problem. And it is optomistic! So important when someone feels overwhelmed by the problem and has struggled, often unsuccessfully, to change behaviors that are self-defeating. I would also advise relatives and friends of addictive persons to use this book to help them cope better with this issue and to find hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethical must read material for addictions professionals
Well researched and well written. If you work in the field of addiction treatment you have an ethical obligation to read this book.If you are contemplating seeking treatment, you should know what you are getting. "Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware" should be the warningposted at the entrance of most addiction treatment centers in the US.This book offers the most up to date research which strongly suggests thattraditional treatment in the US maybe worse or no better than no treatmentat all.It has chapters outlining effective alternatives such as BriefSolution Focused Therapy, Community Reinforcement Approach, and SocialSkills Training.Frankly if you are an addictions professional in the USand haven't read this book or understand this material, you should read itor go get a job selling used cars. ...
