Marianna Class of 1986
The book doesn't tell it all, but it's close. I would recommend it to all.
Entertaining and a very realistic portrayal of the Dee.
I lived through this period (late teens) in Detroit and can attest to the influence of the Detroit Drug organizations.In fact, they are probably understated in this book.It was an invigorating, exciting, yet somewhat frightening time to be alive. Hardcore Gangster Book!
If you enjoy the movies Scarface, Goodfellas and Blow you will love this book.I personally think it is the greatest Gangster book of all-time.The Chambers brothers were the John Gotti's of Detroit in the early 80's, they completely ran the city.They had one goal in mind and that was making money, and they made some serious, serious money.The thing that made the Chambers brothers famous was the fact that they ran this operation like a business, they weren't just petty small-time punks, they were very similar to Tony Montana in the movie Scarface,[....] ... A Refreshing Observation on the War On Drugs
Judge Gray offers an impressive argument against Drug Prohibition. As a conservative Republican judge and prosecutor with decades of experience in law enforcement, he is very qualified to present this striking case against our current policy. As he says throughout the book, "The treatment is more harmful than the disease." This war on drugs is hurting America more than simple drug use ever would. Politicians are exploiting people's fears of drug use, drug cartel's are stronger than ever, drug use has never declined, and the prison industrial complex is flourishing. It is time to declare this decades old policy ineffective. This book describes the problem and gives asolution.

This book includes every argument for anti- Drug Prohibition that I have ever used, and some that I never thought of.
Good Material from a Credible Source
The first thing to note about this book is that it comes from a "credible" source - a former prosecutor and defense attorney, and current judge who wants to REDUCE drug use, as well as the enormous side effects resulting from outlawing their use. ("Credible" in the political sense, as opposed to pot-smoking hippie, who might be just as logical, but carry much less political weight.)

straightforward and powerful

alcoholism & creativity
Never have I seen anything quite like this. This is the definitive book on creativity. & When you don't create, ahhh, the ills that befall us. We fall into an addictive pattern trying desperatedly to recreate that atonement w/God. Failing that, one either drinks, or does whatever to replicate that feeling one more time. Again & again. This book revealed the essence alcoholism. Why certain people drink or create. Simple as that. I've reread this one @ least 2x now.Enjoy your journey.

Inspiring
This is a unique and courageous book, as heartening to the artist as to the addict in each of us. It is a marvelously distilled meditation on creativity's darkness en route to the light. Leonard has deftly woven literary, spiritual, and psychological treatments of the dark night of the soul into a seamless tapestry, and found precious meaning in some of the most devastating aspects of human experience. An Appreciation
This is actually an appreciation - not a literary review. I am analcoholic in recovery and have an immense gratitude to Linda for writingthis book. In her book I found answers, or rather experiences I couldrelate to, so similar and fitting to many issues burning and un-explainedwithin me. My daimon has been enriched and my recovery program enhanced asa result of reading her great work. I have become a survivor (witness) tothe road less travelled up the ladder out of the Abyss - I am no longerterrified to visit that void of darkness because I understand the burningissues of Creativity and Addiction parallels and inter-relations all thatmuch better for reading her book. I am able, daily, one step at a time, tounshackle myself as a hostage to my addiction and choose to harness mycreativity productively as a result of being a student of "Witness tothe Fire". This Book Changed My Life
The Love Hunger Weight-Loss Workbook has literally changed my life.The workbook forced me to look into the issues behind Why I eat rather than What I eat.This book is an excellent tool for anyone looking to make permanent changes.

Not for everyone
Read the workbook and found that although I'm sure that it is useful for others you really have to be of a christian faith to use this workbook. It does have many ideas and suggestions in terms of weight controll but I feltit emphasized to much on "God" and "problems with yourfamily of orgin" and not enough on making us realized that we are incontroll and we are responsible for our weight not anyone else.I wouldalthough recommend it to someone whose had a horrible childhood. ... best of it's kind
In my opinion, this is the best book ever written on this subject.Geneen Roth's personal struggle with compulsive eating is heartfelt.The other personal stories are very helpful also.She covers so many areas that at first glance you would not consider to be tied in with compulsive eating.I read this book when it first came out and lost weight easily.After my last pregnancy, I again began to struggle with my weight.I used Weight Watchers to get most of it off, but then hit a plateau.It was then that I discovered that I was still eating compulsively, only I was eating healthier foods.I am now back with Geneen's books and feel like I'm back on the wagon.This book makes you reflect on all the issues you have experienced with your weight.She does it empathetically, but also with a touch of humor.I hope this book will touch others the way it has touched me.

A GODSEND
When I finally faced the horrible reality that I suffered from compulsive binge eating, and went to a psychiatrist who specialized in teenage eating disorders, the first thing she had me do was read this book.Thank God for her advice.I know now the hundreds of diet books I had read before were such garbage- and that they contributed to my eating disorder by telling me what I could and couldnt eat-and when-to the point that I was never eating what I really wanted, and when I did, I felt so guilty that I just shoved food as fast as I could in my mouth, figuring I would "start fresh" the next day.This cycle of binge eating and restrictive dieting is what geenen roth helps you overcome in this book, by giving the sound advice that if you eat only when actually hungry ( and if you were like me and didnt know when that was anymore, she tells you how to work towards knowing) and stop when you are full, and eat foods you actually enjoy, that you will control your weight in a non-obsessive way.I have spent so much money on so many ridiculous diet books that I know look back on with regret, but this book is one I will always treasure for helping me get through a truly awful period and finally helping me to see the light and shed myself of a terrible habit once and for all.

Good
This book is good for the compulsive eater. However, there seemed to be just a little emotional detachment, making it slightly harder to pull someone into it. Granted, a compulsive eater may have a hard time with ANY book of this type, but there was just a little missing. Still, this is one of the best books on this subject, so this book should definitely be read for that reason. ... Read more

Persuasive and Evocative
Paul Slovic writes a compelling foreword to this persuasive and evocative book describing the health risks to smokers and their own perceptions of them. In it, he rebutts economist Viscusi's thesis that smokers make the rational choice to light up, having weighed the risks and benefits already adequately communicated to them by public health agencies. Slovic, unlike Viscusi, does NOT hold the opinion that the money spent communicating the risk of smoking to the public could be better spent elsewhere, and the studies described in Smoking: Risk, Perception, and Policy--undertaken by distinguished scholars like Daniel Romer and Patrick Jamieson--substantiate his position. I PICKED UP THE BOOK ON FRIDAY AND FINISHED IT SUNDAY.THE BOOK WAS AN EASY READ.I, LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, WAS IN PURE AWE OF THE POWER AN POTENTIAL DWIGHT GOODEN HAD. I WATCHED HIM IN MY LATTER TEENAGE YEARS AND WANTED TO THROW JUST LIKE HIM.I HAD NO IDEA THE YOUNG MAN FACED SO MANY DEMONS.UNFORTUANATELY, DRUG ABUSE IS PREVAILENT IN OUR SOCIETY AND THE SPORTS WE ADMIRE ARE NOT SACRED. CONGRATUATIONS TO GOODEN FOR DEALING WITH HIS ADDICTION IN SUCH AN OPEN MANNER AS HE SHARED IT WITH US IN HIS BOOK, "HEAT."

Off the Diet Track for Good
This book is an answer for all the chronic dieters out there. I have been a diet queen for 20 years. This book will help get to the bottom of why you're on that track and how to get off it. How to trust your own body to tell you what you need to eat and when. There are ideas that helped me combat the mental talk that's been going on all my life keeping me on the yo yo diet. It is such an amazing concept to find that you can listen to your body and just start losing weight naturally. The weight comes off more slowly, but that is because you stop starving yourself and feel comfortable all the time. It's a better way to go since you no longer end up on the other side of the diet where you end up binging because you've been starving. So, in the long run you lose the weight for good. I feel like I've been set free to enjoy life and not worrying about calories or fat or carbs. That's not easy to do after all the different diets I've been on. It's worth the extra effort to lose the weight comfortably and naturally. I highly recommend this book to any one who has tried to lose weight by going on a diet.

Get at peace with yourself---and the pounds will adjust!
Dr. Dorie brings a lot of personal experience,drive and enthusiasm in her approach to diet and health concerns.
Has some good advise if you can get past the touchy-feely
This book gave a lot of godo advise. As someone who is and has struggled with a ED (both bulimia and anorexia), this book started to get me to look past my ED and ask myself why?However, I felt like some of the messages were a little too touchy feely for me. Especially the way she asked a question to ask yourself at the end of each section.It got a little too twelve step-like... which wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Still I recommend this book over the similarly fashioned book "When you eat at the refridgerator, pull up a chair" that one wasn't bad... but this one is better. ... Read more
