5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life!
Don't be fooled by the title, this book applies to EVERYONE! The honesty and truth in what John Lee describes and way he captures and words these truths is heart-opening, validating, healing and a huge relief. It is like he is describing the places we all know in ourselves but never talk about or want to own. I thought it would be too basic but honestly it is fresh and has really useful information that is easy to practice and apply to daily life. The realness and humility in John Lee's books always hit deep places in me and I am so grateful for his willingness to go before us and shine the light of his awarenesses for us as we try to find our own way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing statistics
I haven't read the entire book but have skimmed through it. I am amazed at the statistics recorded by the authors and how they are able to show the problems associated with alcohol and drugs from a medical standpoint. The authors treat alcoholism as a disease, which I have no problems with, but this doesn't mean that an alcoholic doesn't have any responsibility. They point out that alcohol-related problems costs our nation more than any other drug. Obviously the number of drunk-driving incidents shows that something is wrong in our culture. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent detailed book on alcoholism
This book goes into more depth on alcoholism than any other I have found. This recent edition also includes information on other drugs. For anuanced discussion of causation, disease concept, family effects, this isthe book to buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Group History
It's a very good account of the Oxford Group, from which AA evolved.
5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Group and A.A.
I learned so much from this book by Dick B. When I first started reading it, I remembered my old sponsor of 34 years sober, as he told me his version of the story. I have since learned, in large part because of A.A. Historian Dick B.'s many books, that not only was my sponsor wrong, but that, I was being told many untrue stories about the connection between A.A and The Oxford Group in A.A. meetings as well. The people that have stated untrue stories as fact, simply haven't read any of Dick B.'s books. I am much more educated on the truth, and do not put much importance upon a passing along of stories of old. There are stories and there is truth. I suggest reading this book and all of Dick B.'s other titles to my fellow drunks, sponsees, as well as others. I have had the plerasure of meeting and talking to Dick, and the man walks his talk. Thank you so much for helping me with my walk with our Creator- it has solidified my sobriety ten fold.
4-0 out of 5 stars TAKE WHAT YOU NEED AND LEAVE THE REST ....
... As another reviewer correctly notes, the early recovery rates were nothing like 75 percent from initial contact. At the time of the writing of the Big Book, only a handful of alcoholics were solidly sober in New York, despite Bill's efforts of several years, and at least two of them were of an agnostic bent ... Hank and Jim B. In Akron, where they number 80 or so -- still less than 100, virtually all Protestant, virtually all men --they were still putting the newbies in the hospital and then visiting them continuously for days before offering the message. It just could be that that sort of personal, intensive attention and identification had more to do with the better results in Ohio than the explicitly Christian message of the still-extant Oxford Group ``drunk squad.''While much of value was retained from the Oxford Group, much else was quickly jettisoned with the formation of the first independent AA group in Cleveland. And it is from those roots that AA really took off, with the Plain Dealer articles, etc. I have heard a number of tapes (and a few talks in person) from alcoholics of that era. Clearly, the emphasis was more ``religious'' than today; Christian devotionals were widely used; in Ohio, the Absolutes and a respectful nod toward the Bible remained. But the evangelical Protestant tone of the Oxford Groups did not survive.Catholics and Jews were among the early second wave ... according to Clarence S., about whom Dick has written a book. I am in much agreement with much of what Dick has to say ... such attitudes as ``take what you need and leave the rest'' :) and explicitly virulent attacks on religion do not help alcoholics get and stay sober.Nothing in the program is a bar to the practice of religion and the book suggests consulting with our priest, rabbi or minister (not many Christians have a rabbi!) about our spiritual life. But it's hard to imagine something more divisive than evangelical Christian prosthelytizing in the context of an AA meeting. It's a message that can be carried ... outside those walls.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How brave, how well she writes
Vivid. That's the word. We really see her. I wondered how much my real enjoyment of this book flowed from my familiarity with the two places central to the account: Southeastern New Hampshire and Suffolk Law School. I graduated from Suffolk Law in 1967 and I have practiced in New Hampshire for 30 years. I have driven through Newmarket: Where was that bar? I remember what the setting looked like around Suffolk. Ah me. Her story was particular, specific, like all good stories. But the account kept bringing me back. 7th after her first year, cum laude, law review, but only one interview, and that with a firm that was not likely to hire a Suffolk grad, a firm that Dershowitz called the best known (the "best"?) in New England. She was so smart and engaging, but maybe not street savy, I don't know. The central theme is alcohol addiction and she tells that story so well. And that is the theme that the reviewers will highlight. But there was another young woman there at the time. At its best it sings like "Autobiography of A Face" sings. You see the problem, but you are really really interested in this girl. It made me think. You are most real when you are young-vulnerable. Me too. Publisher-you can promote this work. Five stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, clear, and enjoyable read.
King's honesty and clarity is stunning.King skillfully writes about her development years and than recovery with candor and humor.A great read for anyone. Thank you Ms. King.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Parched" satiates the soul in this provocative alcoholic memoir
Heather King has written my favorite story in what I affectionately call "the booze books." Her beautiful writing coupled with unflinching and heartbreaking honesty make this memoir hard to put down. I copied the final paragraph and taped it in my car as a reminder of where she (and I) come from. It is nothing short of astonishing and far superior to A Million Little Pieces--overrated that it is. No gimmicks needed here--the pain, the compassion, the revelation of a remarkable woman who has truly lived two lifetimes in one. I wanted to hug her at the end and thank her for helping so many who've been in the trenches and survived. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE
Only someone who does not suffer from alcoholism would question the ability of a small woman to drink insane amounts of alcohol. I have no doubt that Laura Baugh drank every drink she says she did - I have been there.I, too, abstained during my pregnancies, it was the one time when I didn't struggle with myself over drinking or not drinking. This is a great story and I admire Laura for pulling herself out of the despair she felt - I know, I have felt it also.

1-0 out of 5 stars This bio seems contrived.
I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone, especially a small woman, could drink to the degree that Laura Baugh did and not sustain liver damage. She also says she abstained during her pregnancies...did she know the instant she was pregnant? I think not. I guess writing is an easier way to make a buck than playing golf.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY DRAMATIC STORY
THIS IS THE STORY OF LAURA BAUGH, RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC, PRO GOLFER, AND MOTHER. SHE DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HER LIFE AND CAREER. HER STRUGGLE WITH INNER DEMONS, BROKEN MARRIAGES, AND PRESSURES IS VERY INTERESTING. HER STORY IS A MIRACLE. AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF THE 12 STEP PROGRAM OF AA AT WORK. LAURA HAS BEEN BLESSED BY GOD AND THIS IS A GREAT READ FOR ALL RECOVERING AND PRACTICING ADDICTED PEOPLE. I REMEMBER WHEN LAURA FIRST CAME ON THE PRO TOUR IN THE EARLY 70'S, SHE WAS THE HOTTEST HOTTIE IN SPORTS. GLAD TO SEE SHE HAS CONFRONTED HER ADDICTION AND DEALS WITH IT ONE DAY A TIME. SHE IS STILL HOT AND CERTAINLY PROVEN TO BE A BABY MACHINE. MUST READ. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful and effective tool for getting over relationship
Mary Faulkner is a therapist working with people in recovery from addictions and abuse. Owner and director of the Institute of Integrated Healing Arts in Nashville, Tennessee and founding editor of "Recovering Magazine", she draws upon her many years of experience and expertise in Easy Does It Dating Guide to guide the reader through the "traps, triggers, and traumas" of recovering from romantic involvements -- especially the ones that end badly because of alcoholism or addiction. Readers will learn how to know when they are once again ready to start dating; whether it is wise to date other alcoholics and/or addicts in recovery; what happens if they are attracted to a problem drinker or drug users; how much information should be shared about their past; and what's realistic to expect (or not expect) from relationships. The Easy Does It Dating Guide is a powerful and effective tool for getting over relationship fears, getting past roadblocks to intimacy; dealing with false romantic fantasies, and more. If you are in recovery (or dating someone who is), then give Mary Faulkner's Easy Does It Dating Guide a careful reading from cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Truth, Light
What is the Truth?Who are we?Huck Finn's father was a raging, violent alcoholic, who tried to kill Huck one night with a meat cleaver and shot gun.So he hid, ran away, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) like a Vietnam combat veteran. As most of us do.Stephanie Brown's book SAFE PASSAGE is truly light in the darkness of family alcoholism.I admire and respect her courage for writing a well organized, accurate, clinically brilliant, heartfelt book about the trauma and terror I and 25-30 million other American children experienced in an alcoholic family. It's all in there. And it's all true.An ACA (adult child of alcoholics) I grew up terrified, thinking I was alone, unworthy, that no one understood. And they didn't.Not until blessed therapists like Stephanie Brown (who taught T. Cermak, M.D.), Herbert L. Gravitz and Julie Bowden (RECOVERY: A Guide For ACAs), and Timmen Cermak (A TIME TO HEAL: Huck Finn as ACA with PTSD) came along in the 1980s.They helped me profoundly to understand myself better and what happend to me.It all started with the Gravitz/Bowden book. And it's all in Stephanie Brown's book.My father and two brothers died from alcoholism at 50, 45, and 58 respectively.A playwright and screenwriter, my new screenplay is about family alcoholism, identity, roles we play, and its affects for generations. As Stephanie Brown says in her wonderful book, "Once home, that is, once stabilizedon the firm ground of a much healthier self, the ACA can tolerate seeing and feeling the whole of the past."Fear of abandonment and isolation challenge us as we become our true selves and rewrite our histories, Brown says. She's right.Divided into sections of Family Development, Individual Development, Consequences, Recovery, and Summing Up and Moving On, this book gives insight and understanding to the affects of family alcoholism on children and how to recover from it for the first time in recorded history.I highly recommend it.It's revolutionary. And healing.

I was really excited to read this book after hearing someone talk about it.I looked forward to an insight on Bill's struggle with depression and also hearing the guidance he received from Father Dowling. In that way, the book did not disappoint. The letters are great. My complaint is the way this book is written.I am an avid reader, yet this book makes very little sense!I do not understand the authors point, his interpretations, why he even grouped sections of letters together. He doesn't seem to have a theme, that I can see.I still think this book is worth having in your collection, just for the letters. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moderation Management or Brief Solution Focus
This book is an excellent resource for those seeking a well established alternative to the pathology/deficit/disease focus of traditional 12-Step programs.I believe the reviewer who rated this book with 1 star was confused on its origns.Audrey Kishline is the founder of Moderation Management while Insoo Kim Berg (a contributor) & Steve de Shazer (both out of Milwaukee) are the founders of the Brief Solution Focus Method of Therapy.MM was founded as self-help group.BSF was developed by educated and trained therapists with practical experience. The Brief Solution Focus Method serves as the foundation for this book.A couple of it's main points are: there is hope for the future and there is no "one size fits all program."It is an excellent read whether or not you accept its premise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kishline?What Kishline?
wcdancer appears to be under the impression that Audrey Kishline issomehow associated with this book.In fact, though, her book was acompletely separate one and she is not one of the authors of this book atall.Potential readers should weigh wcdancer's opinions accordingly.:-)5-0 out of 5 stars Flys in the face of AA logic
I read this book after pretty much exhausting every other possibility for recovery from alcoholic drinking.Berg and Kim present an approach that is radically different from any other I've encountered.Their main thesisseems to be, "Start acting as you expect to act when you're sober, butdo it NOW."The idea is that by incorporating healthy habits intoyour life immediately, you can actually begin to learn how to be soberbefore hitting bottom. The book is very clearly and forcefully written, with helpful case studies to illustrate the main ideas.I was able to makesubstantial progress on my own behavior through the methods described here. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

This was originally titled "The AA Way of Life", but was later changed because the book was the veiwpoint of only one man - Bill Wilson. There is a lot of plain basic common sense and wisdom in these snippetsgleaned from years of Wilson's writings. It's not bad for use as areflectivereader for daily meditation/contemplation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
After dealing superficially with my own depression, I finally read this book and started confronting some of the issues in my life that were rooted in my upbringing with an alcoholic parent. This was a break-through point in working toward my own healing.Very readable. Not a lot of psychobabble. ...
