4-0 out of 5 stars MM-Responsible Drinking
Anyone who has questioned or been surprised about the amount they drink will not feel alone after reading this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great.
AA is not for everyone, despite what you may hear.If the 12-step cookie cutter approach leaves a bad aftertaste, this book may help.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally answers the question: What is responsible drinking?
How many people actually know what a standard drink is? Or, how much alcohol is safe to consume? Or what acceptable drinking behavior is? Very few. In our neo-puritan, abstinence-only society, there are few guidelines for sensible, pleasurable indulgence.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a life saver
This book helped me see who I am.The way I think, is clearly in this book.I can't remember part of my childhood and I thought I was abnormal. Reading this book, I have come to find outthat I am quite normal for a child of an alcoholic. If you are a adult child of an alcoholic, I urge you to read this book and see if it helps you too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good start
The ideal book if you are beginning your journey of recovery due to alcoholics. It give many answers to initial questions. It does not give any lasting answers to the great mysteries of life but that is not its purpose anyway.So...a good start

5-0 out of 5 stars shocked
About ten years ago I was in a book-store in Cambridge, Ma. and happened to browse through that book. Just reading a few questions and answers wasone of the greatest shocks in my life. Reading the truth when you alwaysthought that you are so strange, noone else can image, is not easy. I washardly able to go to the cashier and pay for the book. This was the firstday of a new life for me.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick 101 education
This book has the basis information a person needs to quit their addiction. Is the same basic principles that rehabilitation programs used.Except that in the rehab you have a team a people that help you and the AA/NA meetings are all day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turning away from alcohol and/or drugs
The workbook allows one to view his/her compulsion to drink and/or use drugs from multiple perspectives, to better realize the consequences and to make a reasoned choice about whether or not to embrace sobriety. It then gently guides one into early recovery, giving tips and support for making important changes in life so as not to return to alcohol and/or drugs. Fanning writes in short, clear sentences so that the book is very easy to understand, and shows great compassion for those who are burdened by the terrible compulsion that is addiction.

Powerful! Powerful! The bold, honesty of these women is just absolutely powerful. To read about forgiveness, pulling yourself off the ground and rising up, is just powerful. I am truly speachless. I finished this book in one day. I could not put it down. You definately do not need to be in a situation of drugs and alcohol to read this book and be touched. I reccomend this book to every parent, mother, daughter, friend. It is Powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for families
Debra Jay has been on Oprah more than a few times. She's the blond lady with the glasses who is always so direct with addicts and their families. Her new book is a revelation. Basically, her idea is that there should be zero tolerance for untreated addiction in the family. After all, why should the alcoholic have the right to "hit bottom" in their own sweet time, when the family is suffering?

2-0 out of 5 stars Could Use a Proofreader
It is necessary to note that this book is required for CADC licensure in some certification programs. As such, it is so poorly written and organized, I am finding it difficult to get through it. I am disappointed to have paid significant money for what is assumably quality research and information about substance use and abuse, presented in a manner that is careless and disorganized. There are innumerable grammatical errors and the author lacks focus and consistancy within paragraphs. It is inexcusable to read a "textbook," where basic sentence structure and writing is neglected. While the information contained is assumably valid and of great value, its presentation is lacking at best.I hope that future additions are more cost effective and adhere to a higher standard of professional educational writing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
This is a surprisingly poorly written textbook. One can tell that more and more information has simply been cut and pasted into this book over the years. The continuity and organization of the book suffers. The authors (or a new author) should consider writing a new text from scratch --- one that encompasses the entire field of substance abuse counseling more comprehensively.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recovery Companion
This book inspires and encourages continued recovery.Highly recommended for those directly and indirectly involved with recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Dear K, I love the book and I'm so glad you were published in it because otherwise I might not have read it. After 18 years of sobriety, I'm still inspired by an individual's story ofaddiction, the necessary desperation that leads to the first step, and their journey to recovery. Although it's the kind of book I might reread, when I'm finished I'll probably pass it on to someone that I think needs to read it and hope it keeps getting passed along until it's worn out. This book won't go out of style. PAP

3-0 out of 5 stars quit for good
I read this book and more like it after trying aa three times in one year. Finally heard ( from an Amazon review ) about Schick Shadel Hospital in Seattle. 10 days will stop all cravings. Just got back from treatment in oct 06. Came back a non drinker. This program saved my life. This book was helpful for post treatment ideas but not a lifesaver like Schick Shadel.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Quit Drinking without AA
This author is thorough and positive. He describes many factors which can be helpful in recovery. Many people with alcohol abuse difficulties do not want to attend AA for one reason or another.Mr. Dorsman is able to describe an alternative process, and maintain a positive outlook. It is refreshing.I will admit, however, that a few of his descriptives were a bit far fetched.Generally a good alternative book about alcohol abuse and recovery.

for those of us who have a drinking or sober alcoholic in our past or present (and god, don't most of us!), this book can help.it's beautifully yet simply written and gently lays out a new philosophy for life, one in which we can learn to keep the focus on ourselves and our behavior, be honest but in an appropriate way, and be kind but firm - with boundaries.this book offered me a whole new idea of what love and life are and can be, and encouraged me to walk forward in a healthy direction like few books have.5-0 out of 5 stars How Alanon Works For Families and Friends of Alcoholics

It explains how addiction warps those close to the addict, the behaviorsthat ensue and finally healthier behavior. It's provides a way out of theprison that's constructed when a family or friend faces the frustration ofliving with and loving an alcoholic/addict.Buy this book for YOU ifyou're in this situation..and stop the madness. ... Some folks reviewing this book don't seem to understand the purpose for which the book was intended:This is a general consumer book with "straight facts" from Ph.D.s in pharmacology and chemistry on "the most used and abused drugs."This isn't intended to be comprehensive. It it certainly isn't about grandstanding as some tool in the "war on drugs."The motto in this book is "Just say Know."

Alcohol and the Addictive Brain is possibly the best publishedexplanation ofgenetic and neurochemical causes of alcohol dependence, withdrawal and craving. This book explains how genetically susceptible individuals, differ neurochemicallyfrom nonalcoholics, and how alcohol alters dopamine, GABA, serotonin, norepinephrine and opiate neurotransmitter and neurotransmitter receptor levels.Inherited differences in P300 brainwaves are thoroughly explained. The history of alcohol neurotransmitter research is reported, objectively, with fair consideration given to opposing views. This book is surprisingly readable, considering the complexity of the research it explains.Enkephalinase inhibition treatments, which Blum has refined, are an especially promising possibility for reducing alcohol craving and dependence. The explanation of transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, and subsequently to beta carboline, tetrahydroisoquinolines, morphine, codeine and other opiates, remains useful today and helps explain why naltrexone and accupuncture can reduce alcohol craving and consumption.
5-0 out of 5 stars At last a methodologically rigorous study of alcoholism
I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in thebrain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and manytherapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Paynepresent compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurologicaldisorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Preachy Repackaging of 12 Step Recovery
As a director of an outpatient chemical dependency program, I came across this book in my professional life. While the book is well intentioned and covers a wide range of topics about addiction and recovery, I was ultimately quite disappointed in it's presentation. The content is clearly a repackaging of 12 Step (e.g.: Alcoholics Anonyomous) concepts such as acceptance of powerlessness, etc. While this is not by itself a bad thing, the author incessantly uses commanding language beginning with "We need to ..."that many readers, I anticipate, will experience as preaching and condescending. (Implicitly telling the reader: "You need to!") The author places a heavy emphasis on labeling ("alcoholic", "addict") and de-emphasizes a person's ability to be their own agent of change; both contrary to scientific principles about what is effectively in achieving change. Some chapters contain exercises that invite reader participation but the exercises are not well developed and seem secondary to the overall lecturing tone of the material. Those interested in 12 Step recovery might do better to go to the primary sources (AA, NA). Others might seek out material from sources such as Smart Recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Wonderful Tool
I have tried to be a careful student of the Big Book for many years. It is the most important book in my life. This volume is an invaluable tool for studying the Big Book. It's comments are clear, insightful, and helpful. It is clearly the product of years of study. The author keeps the comments brief, accurate and writes withstyle of deep humility that comes from practicing this program over time.
1-0 out of 5 stars Can not recommend.
I found the editing of this edition to be amateurish and poorly done (for instance, the last 30 or so pages are repeated).5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS WORTH BUYING
The Annotated AA Handbook explains the directions for working the 12 steps using the first edition Big Book text and stories. There is a massive amount of commentary explaining almost every sentence of the Big Book. The annotations illustrate how the principles of AA apply to our lives and how we can live the program. I am amazed at the amount of study and understanding that writing this book must have required. The cross refs really enable us to more fully understand the AA program. There are tables included that show what the Big Book has to say about topics such as: Reasons to Believe; Medical Opinions of Alcoholism, Attitudes that Hinder our Progress; Directions for making a Beginning. Chapter 5 includes GREAT tables for doing our fourth steps. The index is amazing in itself -- the best I have ever seen, and way better than a concordance. Every chapter has an introduction and section showing an outline of concepts presented that I found especially helpful. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in the 12 steps, AA history, the writers of the first edition stories, and especially those who want to recover from alcoholism. Buy this book! ...
