This is one of my favorite books....I think it really helps keep the focus on me.I blamed the alcoholic for my problems for so many years...I find with this book it helpsme to see and accept my part in the disease and Iam finally able to work on it. 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, CONCISE,ELEGANT Personal witness on the 12 steps
According to the publisher Fr. Fred is 50 years a jesiut priest,an a member of alcoholics anonymous for almost 40 years. This very well written{especially when you consider they are simply transcriptes of talks],clear rendering of the 12 steps. A great deal of the literature on the 12 steps takes a teacher-student dialogue approach, whereas fr. fred seems to be far more humble, and so much more effective. He breaks down each step chapter by chapetr[his 3rd step,6th and 7th are worth thr price of the book alone].His language is VERY SIMPLE AND CLEAR.I have avidly read almost everything that i can get on the 12 steps, and i agree with the previous reviewer, this is essentila, and BY FAR AND AWAY THE BEST BOOK ON THE 12 STEPs i have read.No preaching, no religion,no oldtimer nostagia[which, unfortunately clutters up some other books.}10 stars,20 stars. This is life affirming stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the 12 steps i have encountered
This is a simple, brilliant explanation of the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous.Father Fred explains the steps in clean plain prose[though the ist edition is littered with typos].His explanation of the 2nd step isparticularly excellent, though after a rather slow ist step introduction, each of the steps are magnificent. Pardon the hyperbole, but this is one ofthe few necessary books I own. I have given out at LEAST 50 copies of thisbook, and I have found 1,1 person who did not find it veryuseful.Anyone, especially those in A. a. ,will find it 's clarity andbrevity welcome. Do not be put off by the title,it is not a sectarianreligious book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for anyone who is seeking wholeness.
Sometimes book titles are deceiving. For example: I am not an alcoholic, so I would not usually pick up a book that might seem to deal with that illness. The old axiom "don't judge a book by its cover" fitsreally well here. No one person in this world is free from problems. Thesemay come in various packages such as addicitons, mental illness, depression, etc. However, if we strip away the outside package, the humancondition is the same across the board. Pain is pain. Suffering issuffering. These need to be dealt with, and Fr. Fred's sharings on each ofthe 12 steps of AA is a most valuable tool to help anyone, not just thosewith addictions. It has helped me to look at the situations in my lifesquarely in the face and realize that I don't have to live with them anymore. Read it. Ponder it. Read it again and again. It will become a mostvaluable part of your life. It will empower you to change. It will help youfind wholeness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Anthropological Study of Addictions Made Easy
This work is essential reading for both substance-abuse treatment professionals and all others who have an interest in addictions. The ability to understand the addict, recovering or not, is simplified inWhite's work. White divides the addict into three easy-to-understand groups(Acultural, Bicultural and culturally enmeshed), providing an importantinformational tool for assessment and treatment planning. Just as thetreatment professional should understand the ethnic and religious cultureof the patient, so too should he understand the culture of addiction andrecovery within which the substance abuser "resides." Knowingthat there is a "cultural" difference between inner-city heroinaddicts and codeine dependent nurses, for example, it follows thattreatment for each group should also be different. What makes White's workparticularly important is the scientific foundation from which it wasresearched and written. It is an anthropological work in lay-person'slanguage. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars powerful
i grew up in a small southern town that was fantastically inhabited bywhat seemed an inordinate number of flamboyant black drag queens.as achild i marveled at their screaming visibility, and always kept one eyepeeled for a glimpse of a sashaying stormy or randy ball or any of theother girls, now long dead.as a grown woman (gay, incidentally)livingin a much larger, but still southern city, i remain fascinated by the missthangs that i encounter in clubs and on street corners.this book is a rawand unflinching peek into the lives of five ordinarily extraordinaryqueens, who live their scarred and often dismaying lives with an amazinglack of self-pity and an equally amazing joie de vivre.i recommend! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is not a self-help book but rather a serious, comprehensive, professional presentation of the insidious nature of alcohol and its impact upon the basic structure and functioning of a family. The book is also outstanding simply because of the manner in which it approaches and describes the fundamental aspects of a family - even if one were not focused upon alcohol, the description of what makes up a family justifies purchasing the book. It is not a perfect book, and somewhat tedious/redundant during the last chapters, but it remains (despite a number of years since its publication) one of clearest and profound presentations on either subject (alcohol or family) there is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps explain family systems theory and alcohol treatment
Steinglass' work is an excellent example of how Murray Bowen's family systems theory can be applied to the need to understand how alcohol becomes the central organizing princple in a family. The volume is written more for those who assist families and those in recovery, rather than the patients and family members themselves, that is, for any person in the helping professions who has a working knowledge of system's theory.Well-written, well-researched and quickly understood, it would be a good resource for anyone who deals with alcoholics, their families and adult children's issues.Again, the only drawback is that it is not for the general public but for helping agents and that is not a drawback as long as one is aware of that up front. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars God Bless Joe McQ!
I strongly disagree with the person who gave Joe one star and criticized him!I have met him personally, sat in his lectures and read his books several time. How can you possibly discourage those seeking recovery to avoid his wonderful books?Perhaps you are far ahead in your recovery, but there are those of us who definitely need Joe and his wisdom.I came in to buy several copies of The Steps We Took for friends of mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I can't recommend this book enough; it's even better than "The Steps We Took". 3-0 out of 5 stars Sponsorship Starter

5-0 out of 5 stars ACoA'ers who attend Al-Anon
This books takes an accurate and 'in depth' look at what it's like to grow up in an alcoholic/dysfunctional family. It gives a very good description of the feelings and characterisics of Adult Children of Alcoholics.I could identify with many of the stories. This book gave me hope.If you're like me, there aren't many active ACoA meetings in your area.I attended Al-anon because it was more active in my area, and I definitely needed some type of support group that focused on addiction, but at times I felt out of place. It wasn't until I found this book that I actually felt a part of the Al-Anon family.Until I found this book, I often felt like an outsider looking in because there were no longer many active alcoholics in my life, but I was still suffering from the effects of alcoholism. This book shares stories that looks at the many different facets of growing up in an alcoholic home.I think it's a 'must have' for all Adult Children of alcoholics.I can now vouch for the phrase "Al-anon is for Adult Children of Alcoholics."

5-0 out of 5 stars we work it out or we live it out
this was a wonderful book,it was so painful to read ,but so real, with out these stories that validated my own pain of growing up in my own family...where i felt so alone and abandoned and so out of control, this book helped me see that if i didnt work this stuff out in my own life that i would live it out and recreate the same scene in my own life..out of my aloneness and abandonment issues i would put this on other people and have the same expectations of them as i did of my family of original and those needs would not be meet because i was not healthy enough to find someone that was available as only the inavailable was attractive to me ...as i was also looking for someone to rescue and caretake just as i had learnt in my family..or i would find someone to rescue me..this book stopped me enough to get honest, and as without anything in life there is no gain without pain ..what a book...what a journey..the truth does set you free.have the courage to read this book it is amazing...its not about blame its about recovery..

5-0 out of 5 stars The book of my life & my family

1-0 out of 5 stars No Change for Agnostics
I was disappointed and depressed by this book.Chapter 4, "We Agnostics", retains the heavy-handed treatment of Agnostics found in "the Big Book": "We agnostics and atheists chose to believe that human intelligence was the last word... Rather vain of us, wasn't it?"Agnostics are not atheists; and agnostics are no more or less prone to vanity than those with religious faith. If there is vanity here, it is on the part of the author - who falslely presupposes what Agnostics believe about human intelligence, and uses this erroneous presupposition to conclude that Agnostics must be vain.Shortly thereafter in the chapter the Agnostic disappears for some reason. The Atheist then is then brought to his knees, literally, when confronted by one of those seemingly unstoppable attacks on egotism: "Who are you to say there is no God?" Of course the Agnostic would have answered, "Who are you to say there IS a god?"Perhaps this is why he disappears in chapter 4 in both "the Big Book" and "A Simple Program."
5-0 out of 5 stars Cheaper than a 12 pack
This book explains what it means to be an Alcoholic.Being an Alchoholic is as much an attitude towards yourself and life, as a craving for alcohol. For the many who are at the bottom looking for answers, or to the skeptic who isn't sure whether or not they are an Alchoholic, this book offers clear answers to a confusing problem.5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
