Editorial Review

Judith Hillman Paterson, a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, has fashioned a courageous chronicle of a horrific childhood that included an alcoholic father, who once beat her until she blacked out, and a mother who died at age 31 after years of mental illness and substance abuse and left behind four children under the age of 10. I first read about Judith Paterson in the University of Maryland Magazine. An article described a new television program called "The Writer's Tale" with Judith Paterson as creator and host.I wrote to Judith about my book, "How to Find a Fella in the Want Ads," and she invited me to discuss the writing process on her show.As soon as we finished taping, she said she had to go to the metro to meet the next author she was interviewing. As she left she gave me a copy of "Sweet Mystery."I'd never heard of the book. That night at bedtime I opened her book and began to read.5-0 out of 5 stars Reconstruction, Survival, and Joy
I heard the author speak at a conference in Washington, D.C. last week.Afterwards, I immediately ran to the closest book store to purchase a copy. The very large store was sold out!I finally located a copy when I returned home from the conference.I couldn't wait to begin reading it and once I began, I was entranced and couldn't put it down.I felt like she was writing my own story. Her successful life journey and her beautiful writing makes me yearn to write my own story.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Major breakthrough in alcohol/drug addiction
It is hard to believe that in our current era of fast evolution, addiction is still pretty much a disorder that very few people really understand. Fortunately we have people like Doug that took upon themselves to thoroughly research the problem and summarize their finding in a book for all of us. 5-0 out of 5 stars There IS a solution
A while back on an online discussion forum, a young woman was talking about her awful experience which was the result of her romantic relationship with an alcoholic/other drug addict. She didn't want to repeat the same mistake and asked if anyone knew of a book that would help her discern people with this kind of problem before she got to involved again.Of course, there was the standard "there isn't a book."I quickly posted and recommended Doug Thorburn's excellent "How to Spot Hidden Alcoholics."This astounding text gives excellent advice on how to recognize the sickness of alcoholism and other drug addiction before you invest your time, heart, wallet and sanity into a potentially dangerous individual.I've seen it all.I grew up in a family shot through the disease of alcoholism, have been romantically involved with addicts, have lost many friends to the disease, and am a recovering alcoholic of 15 years myself.Thorburn correctly puts all the pieces of the puzzle together. If you think you might need this book, you do.Get it and protect yourself.

Thorburn's book provides important insights into the disease of addiction and how it affects us all.Now I know, when I see these clues, to stay away! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Scottish journalist Andrew O'Hagan's fascination with "missing persons" grew out of his childhood exposure to the fear engendered by unexplained disappearance. He begins his inquiry into this scarily prevalent phenomenon by describing his growing up in working-class Glasgow in the 1970s, his parents' worry over inner city violence, and the disappearance of a local boy that left the author with a deep unease. O'Hagan's investigation into the causes of such disappearances--abduction, willful walking away from life, teenage angst, parental abandonment--includes a detailed account of a famous British serial murder case in Gloucester. Through wrenching interviews with those hurt most, O'Hagan evokes a compassionate and disturbing empathy with the absent victims of modern alienation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good, solid book full of information.
Part memoir, part social commentary, this book is about missing people in Great Britain. It's a bit dated now as it was written before the internet came into widespread use, but much of what it says still applies. The book is not about specific cases so much as the phenomenon in general. O'Hagan, a journalist, interviewed runaways and homeless people in addition to law enforcement officials as part of his research. Much of what he says, especially about the people who die and are left undiscovered in their apartments for months, makes for very depressing reading. This book is well worth the time to look at and fostered greater awareness in myself, although I knew a great deal about missing people already.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
This is an astonishing book on a number of levels. At its most basic, it provides a fascinating account of how easily it becomes possible for people to 'disappear'. If you've ever sat staring at a kid's face on the back of a milk carton, and wondered 'What happened?', The Missing will go a considerable way to providing answers. But that's not all: as a piece of autobiography -- indeed, as a piece about memory -- The Missing is stunning: precise, lucid, beautiful despite itself. As a piece of reportage, it is, simply, astonishing. My hat goes off to Mr O'Hagan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Double Think
This is the usual fare that critics at the New York Times discuss at trendy Manhattan restaurants, the kind of self pitying whining that distinguishes their "leisure" section for privileged urbanites, opposite the "news" where blood thirsty articles condoningAmerican war crimes prevail. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inventorying Using the Right Brain
This little book works from Bill W.'s "instincts out of balance" tack (in AA's 12 X 12) to provide many exercises and techniques for getting at buried "hooks" and "triggers" for all sorts ofaddictive and compulsive patterns. It is a great book for the recoveringperson who is stuck on an issue -- say, cigarette smoking or perhaps arelationship pattern that always ends up frustrating or frightening.Byusing visualization as a part of the inventory process, visual memories(such as pre-verbal ones from early childhood,) scent memories and otherassociations that elude rational thought can be captured, grasped -- andthen evaluated in the more traditional 12-step style. This book has manypractical exercises that can used in 12-step groups in CODA or ACA orinformally among sponsor/sponsees in AA, NA or Alanon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A collection of autobiographical stories
Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is a collection of autobiographical stories drawn from author LeAnn Ralph's family dairy farm in Wisconsin in a time when small family farm were commonplace in the Badger State's rural countryside. Now that we live in a time when approximately 85% of American family dairy farms have disappeared into suburban township developments or absorbed into agribusiness scale corporate farming enclaves, LeAnn takes us back some forty years ago into a era when dairy farming was a dawn to dusk life, seven days a week lifestyle that bonded parents and children with hard work and a sense of the land, animals, and homestead that is rapidly passing from today's expanding urban society. More than just an autobiographical collection of anecdotal stories, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam is also enhanced with a recipe for making homemade ice cream without an ice cream maker and a recipe for "Norma's Homemade Bread". Highly recommended reading, Give Me A Home Where The Dairy Cows Roam should be on the shelves of every community library in Wisconsin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not alone
This literature work by Daniel Meier truly brings you into the writer's life not only as a child but an adult as well.Coming from a home with a workaholic father (not an alcoholic) I could truly relate for the first time and I no longer felt like an "alien".I was able to laugh, cry and even roll my eyes (due to irrational beliefs we all have) as I read through one man's journey of healing and finding forgiveness.I was unable to put it down as I relived repressed memories of my own childhood and found new ways to begin living again.
