5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice travel guide on your journey through Option.
Mandy's writing style is light, warm, and friendly. Not to mention easy on the eyes and brain cells. Which I'm especially grateful for considering that the subject matter briskly moves you along in your not so simple journey of letting loose of your tenacious grasp of unhappiness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Changing self limiting beliefs
Travelling Free is a book that provides 12 written exercises for you to systematically find out what old patterns or beliefs are running your life and causing unhappiness.5-0 out of 5 stars Works with 12-Step programs, too.
Travelling Free is for anyone and everyone who struggles to let go of things from their past. Mandy Evans' unique insight and helpful stories from real life guide you to an understanding of the beliefs that continue to limit your life. It is enjoyable to read, uplifting and absolutely usable. I have had my copy for over a decade and I re-read it from time to time just to remind myself of the possibilities available to me. This book is positive and pracitcal. There's no fluff in Travelling Free - just the helpful tools you need to fly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Dering
I read this book in three days awhile back, and still remember most of it, especially the night I bolted up in bed and turned the light on after dozing and thinking about the rattle snake and said to the air, "There has to be magic."I went back to sleep with that thought.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Irene Watson, author of "The Sitting Swing."
Again, Barbara has written a compelling story of a part of her life that is insightful, and most of all thought provoking. As I read the book I found myself in many of the pages. It gave me courage and strength to look at my own life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Codependents
I borrowed this book from my therapist's library, as I'd arrive early each week to read a chapter at a time. I'm buying a copy for myself so I can write all over the margins! This book is a MUST for anyone close to a codependent as well as the codependent people themselves. It will feel like the author is reading your mind, was a fly on the wall as you grew up & has been following you all your life & knows your struggles by heart. Being truly understood by someone is a joy, but understanding oneself is the 1st step on the journey toward emotional & physical health, self-worth & self-respect, getting one's life & personal power back. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of alcoholic families and the dysfunction
This book was so relieving. To find reasons for ways my family functioned as a child and functions today as an adult.Sharon writes in a very objective way which is easy to understand and relate to.She has such vast experience, both personal and professional, in the field of family alcoholism which she shares in a well thought out and organized way.I could not wait to finish this book and move on to another one of her books, "Another Chance", which I am currently reading and becoming even more educated on my own co-dependent issues. ... "Have you ever said, 'If it weren't for my bad luck, I'd have no luck at all?' According to Marc Myers, author of How to Make Luck, luck is not random at all. Here's how to do it, he claims:
4-0 out of 5 stars A practical and useful book
This book is great. The title can be a little misleading. The book is about behaviors you can adopt to influence things to go the way you want them to. It's not a new age hocus pocus book. It is a real world street smart book on a variety of ways to influence people and situations to go well for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think that God is present in all life buy this book
I was raised a Baptist and have actively pursued spiritual knowledge since the age of 10 through a variety of avenues. I was taught from that age that God resides in the center of my heart and that all life, animate and inanimate is sacred, part of God.
1-0 out of 5 stars No, you're not God.Get over yourself.
The last thing this world needs is more humanistic foolishness like this. The primary source of all human ills is not their lack of self-esteem or unawareness of their own "power" (whatever that is).The problem is humanity's rebellion against the One True and Living God, who expressed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. As long as people continue to try to set themselves up as their own little deities, each with an out-of-control "it's all about me" entitlement mentality, we're just going to continue chasing our tails in a never-ending quest for a home-made, moonshine notions like "limitlessness" (whatever that is).
5-0 out of 5 stars Kisses from heaven
This book is amazing! The material is rich with appreciation and love for all of us.It touched my mind, my heart, and affirmed what I already felt in my soul.It brought so much peace back into me.In fact, I have read it several times, each time I've made even more connections.I am more aware of myself and how I'm creating my world.I have also listened to Story's CD's. I would strongly recommend those as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Truth, Light
What is the Truth?Who are we?Huck Finn's father was a raging, violent alcoholic, who tried to kill Huck one night with a meat cleaver and shot gun.So he hid, ran away, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) like a Vietnam combat veteran. As most of us do.Stephanie Brown's book SAFE PASSAGE is truly light in the darkness of family alcoholism.I admire and respect her courage for writing a well organized, accurate, clinically brilliant, heartfelt book about the trauma and terror I and 25-30 million other American children experienced in an alcoholic family. It's all in there. And it's all true.An ACA (adult child of alcoholics) I grew up terrified, thinking I was alone, unworthy, that no one understood. And they didn't.Not until blessed therapists like Stephanie Brown (who taught T. Cermak, M.D.), Herbert L. Gravitz and Julie Bowden (RECOVERY: A Guide For ACAs), and Timmen Cermak (A TIME TO HEAL: Huck Finn as ACA with PTSD) came along in the 1980s.They helped me profoundly to understand myself better and what happend to me.It all started with the Gravitz/Bowden book. And it's all in Stephanie Brown's book.My father and two brothers died from alcoholism at 50, 45, and 58 respectively.A playwright and screenwriter, my new screenplay is about family alcoholism, identity, roles we play, and its affects for generations. As Stephanie Brown says in her wonderful book, "Once home, that is, once stabilizedon the firm ground of a much healthier self, the ACA can tolerate seeing and feeling the whole of the past."Fear of abandonment and isolation challenge us as we become our true selves and rewrite our histories, Brown says. She's right.Divided into sections of Family Development, Individual Development, Consequences, Recovery, and Summing Up and Moving On, this book gives insight and understanding to the affects of family alcoholism on children and how to recover from it for the first time in recorded history.I highly recommend it.It's revolutionary. And healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars ACoA'ers who attend Al-Anon
This books takes an accurate and 'in depth' look at what it's like to grow up in an alcoholic/dysfunctional family. It gives a very good description of the feelings and characterisics of Adult Children of Alcoholics.I could identify with many of the stories. This book gave me hope.If you're like me, there aren't many active ACoA meetings in your area.I attended Al-anon because it was more active in my area, and I definitely needed some type of support group that focused on addiction, but at times I felt out of place. It wasn't until I found this book that I actually felt a part of the Al-Anon family.Until I found this book, I often felt like an outsider looking in because there were no longer many active alcoholics in my life, but I was still suffering from the effects of alcoholism. This book shares stories that looks at the many different facets of growing up in an alcoholic home.I think it's a 'must have' for all Adult Children of alcoholics.I can now vouch for the phrase "Al-anon is for Adult Children of Alcoholics."

5-0 out of 5 stars we work it out or we live it out
this was a wonderful book,it was so painful to read ,but so real, with out these stories that validated my own pain of growing up in my own family...where i felt so alone and abandoned and so out of control, this book helped me see that if i didnt work this stuff out in my own life that i would live it out and recreate the same scene in my own life..out of my aloneness and abandonment issues i would put this on other people and have the same expectations of them as i did of my family of original and those needs would not be meet because i was not healthy enough to find someone that was available as only the inavailable was attractive to me ...as i was also looking for someone to rescue and caretake just as i had learnt in my family..or i would find someone to rescue me..this book stopped me enough to get honest, and as without anything in life there is no gain without pain ..what a book...what a journey..the truth does set you free.have the courage to read this book it is amazing...its not about blame its about recovery..

5-0 out of 5 stars The book of my life & my family

1-0 out of 5 stars A lewd, crude, obnoxious novel about the F-Bomb and louie anderson's 16 chins.
Even before I picked up this book, I knew I was going to hate it. I mean look at the cover, a fat man with a depressing no-food frown. I then read the book but to no surprise it was a recipes to louie anderson's favorite meal. It wasn't even a recipe it was just "jar of lard." Then I started the book and i almost threw up. The first chapter is "how I swallowed my cat." I didn't read it for a few days then I dove back in for seconds. There wasn't even a second chapter it was just ripped and torn papers like louie was so bored of his own book he started to eat it. I guess you're wondering if this whole book is about louie's eating and misadventours while eating and the answer is yes. Louie once tried to swallow a bald guy's head because he thought it was a watermelon. How do you reddeem yourself after writing a book about that? How did this incolherent mess wind up published? Who Knows? Towards the end it talks about Louie on the "Family Feud." From his drug addictions to his submarine sandwitch cravings this chapter tells all. Sound like a book you want to read?
5-0 out of 5 stars A great study of pain, told through humor
I really applaud and admire the work that Anderson has given us within this book
4-0 out of 5 stars Not His Best Book, But Still a Treat
I've been a long time Louie Anderson fan and regard his first two books, "Dear Dad: Letters From an Adult child" and "Goodbye Jumbo...Hello Cruel World," two of the best books I've ever read.So I was naturally excited to hear he was writing a third book.In "The F Word," Louie tackles his relationship with his dysfunctional family, which has been strained by his fame and wealth (they resent him and/or expect him to help support them). He uses examples from his own family interactions to offer tips to others on how to deal with their dysfunctional family relationships. His advice is often too personal or oversimplified to be of good therapeutic use. However, Louie has an amazing ability to draw the reader into his life.Reading his books, I no longer feel like a fan.I feel like a friend. He does an amazing job of describing the unique personality traits of each of his 10 siblings and the problems they battle.Collectively, they have all been impacted in some way by their (deceased) alcoholic, abusive father. This book does offer some good down to earth advice and proves that everybody has problems that they struggle with and demons they battle, even celebrities.Overall, I found it to be a rewarding book, just somewhat less so than his previous books. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Reading
This book is a very interesting chronicle and very well written saga of the murders of two women at the hands of their husband at the time, John David Smith. The book, written by one of the victims sister, chronicles the exhaustive search by the victim's family for the answers as to what happened to their beloved sister. It also details how that search ended up helping to resolve a cold case, from the 1970's, and eventually put the murderer into police custody. The book is fascinating since it is written so "un-like" many true crime novels which are often to full of courtroom drama and endless descriptions of the police involvement in the cases at hand. This book tells the day to day feelings and frustrations of the victims family, their quest to find answers, and somewhat ultimate justice for their sister. It is a "page turner" and well worth reading. UPDATE: As of the writing of my review Smith sits in an Ohio prison at the age of 54 while in his 4th year of a 15-life sentence. UPDATE #2: Sandra Anderson, the dog handler who assisted in the search for bodies in this case, pled guilty in 2004 in U.S. District Court in Detroit, MI to five felony charges (including obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal authorities) involving "planted" evidence cases in Oscoda, Bay City and Oakland County, MI in 1999 involving her cadaver dog Eagle. A two year prison term and financial restitution was paid to at least one (Lapeer) MI. county by Ms. Anderson.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who Needs 20/20? This Is Better!
I'm not usually a big fan of true-crime/mystery-type books, but this one pleasantly surprised (and intrigued) me! The book's plot may sound slightly familiar, as it has been featured on various TV news magazine shows -- including 20/20 -- but you'll never get such amazing detail and narrative quality from a one-hour TV show. In the book, you can really get into the tale and feel the emotions of someone searching for a lost family member -- and seeking justice for the person responsible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery and a story you just can't put down.

Unbelievable! Sherrie Gladden-Davis's story is compelling, evocative, and a testament to the power of family. With the support of her niece, Dedy, Sherrie tracks her sister's suspected killer across the country, working alongside various law enforcement officers, her search for justice unwavering.

This is absolutely the best book I have read as an adult child of an alcoholic. I shared it with my counselor and he has recommended it to many of his colleagues. Anyone trying to make the journey out of an embattled childhood needs to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Definitive Work!
I found this a fascinating addition to my study of hypnosis and dealing with the aspect of my "shadow" self. It's really amazing how many of us sabotage ourselves with negative thought patterns.Although it may seem simplistic in nature...our thoughts really are our reality. And Coue takes us right to the heart of the issue.A remarkable book. ...
