5-0 out of 5 stars I quit!
I'm not a big fan of the self help genre and never would have read this book if it wasn't lying around at a time when I was bored.Fortunately, I did read it, it took me about half an hour to read, and now I'm a nonsmoker.I haven't had a cigarette for a week, I quit cold turkey and I don't ever want to pick up another.Buy this book for yourself or for a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars I just don't want to pick them up anymore
I read this book before going to sleep, it's very short, quite sharp and works a treat!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best!
If you work in the field of addiction run out and get every book Terry has written. He is simply the best.I would recommend his work to lay people who have substance abuse or recovery issues also.this book, as are all of his books, is indispensable if you run chemical dependency, family, PC 100 or CDIOP groups. There is a wealth of practical usable information. Also, this is the first book of it's kind that I have found that deals with the specific issues common to long term sobriety. Most books I come across deal with the first 2 years which is understandable. But how wonderful to find a book that specifically has a section on double digit (those with decades) sobriety.I can't recommend it enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
I recieved this book in a timely fashion and in good conditon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get your life back
Hundreds of folks are getting their lives back because of this book. I know, because I own a very active, free Yahoo! message board for all non-dieters. My members come in having read a variety of books on non-dieting. Many of them love to refer to "OO" when sharing their recovery. I am happy to give this book a five star review. -- Linda Moran

5-0 out of 5 stars challenging book
This is the book that had the most deep impact on my life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Only approach that works in the longrun.
About 8-9 years ago I used this approach to finally establish a healthy relationship to my body and food after years of painful, damaging, obsessive dieting and disordered eating that had taken over my life.Although the approach is scary at first, it's the only one that has ever worked for me.Following yet another diet only perpetuates the underlying problems with food/eating.Although I was panicked at first about gaining weight when all food was allowed, after about a year I was 10-15 pounds lighter than I'd been when I was constantly dieting.I was suprised to find that when I truly listened to and respected my body's hunger and normalized my relationship with food, my body settled into a healthy, lower weight.

4-0 out of 5 stars You are NOT alone!
This book has helped me realize that I am not alone and that it is completely NORMAL to have these types of feelings.
5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and helpful steps to restoration
Understanding why your spouse was stupid enough to become entangled in the porno web is one thing; forgiving him and restoring your relationship is quite another. This book lays it all bare and gives practical counsel that, if followed, will help a woman wanting to accomplish that end.
5-0 out of 5 stars I found this book most helpful
Unlike some of the other reviews, I found this book most helpful. I liked that it is written to the Christian wife of a Christian husband. While my situation may not be exactly the same as the examples in the book there are similarities and I was able to figure out how I needed to respond to the information I recently learned. Before reading the book I knew I wanted something that would support my decision to work this out. I decided to read through it once and then I decided to "work" through it. Taking what I read and applying it to my situation, personality and marriage. I found it necessary to pray my way through this process and seek God's will and knowledge so that it would not be "about me" as much as it would be about our marriage and our future together. I would recommend this book. I agree it does not address if the woman has been sexually wounded or is dealing with her own sexual sin but I really don't think that was the intent of the authors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!
This book supplied the inspiration necessary to break free of an eating disorder. It is truly incredible how the author weaves modern issues into traditional stories. This book is a must for anyone struggling with an eating disorder, body dissatisfaction, or anyone who knows someone with these issues.
5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Inspiring!
This was an interesting book, quite true to its name, Johnston uses myths, metaphors and storytelling to help illustrate some of the core "problems" with women's thinking regarding food and eating habits. While I definitely do NOT have problems on the level of examples used in this book - I do not now, nor have I ever been anorexic or bulimic or had any medically treatable eating disorder...I do make "bad" food choices and eat for reasons that are not related to physical hunger...so I got a lot more out of this book that I thought I would based on the target audience alone.
5-0 out of 5 stars not another handbook
Anita Johnston doesn't give you another book of clinical criteria and personality tendencies. She writes with recognition that her audience has an intimate relationship with the reality and intricacies and seduction of their eating disorder. Even for the professional, she provides a new avenue to access thoughts, behaviors, symptoms. johnston's diction can be startlingly honest - denial is not easy here. But all along, she is telling myths that are safe to consider, to discuss, to debate, and ultimately to embrace, becauase they are not real and my (our?) eating disorders are not at attention and armed for battle. I think this is a beautiful book and one that I have utilized, and seen utilized in hospital and group therapy, a thousand times on the long road of recovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ifyou are reading this review you might be an addict!
THE MESSAGE IS HOPE, AND THE PROMISE IS FREEDOM, AND JUST FOR TODAY YOU NEVER HAVE TO USE AGAIN! If you've found this book give yourself a break and read it. You will find your story on every page. See for yourself! I have truly found a new way to live, to live a life free from active addiction. There are two additional things that go hand and hand with the Basic Text: attending NA meetings regularly, and working the 12 Steps with a sponcer. I am a recovering crystal meth addict and I have 23 months clean, and for that I am forever grateful. If your whole life was/is centered around drugs, the getting and using, and finding ways and means to get more, concider yourself an addict. Come to an NA meeting and I'll be the first to say "Welcome home, you never have to use again."

4-0 out of 5 stars DO try Rational Recovery...
NA is a reasonable way for an addict to recover, but so is "self recovery" where you simply make a commitment to never use again -- and then *really* never use again. If this sounds impossible, it may be because AA and NA have declared it's impossible and so many people have come to believe it that it's folk wisdom. However, most people who quit a substance and then stay quit over the long haul do so on their own, without ever attending a recovery group. This is verifiable fact!
5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for us recovering addicts
I have owned this book since about 1995 when I was given a copy at my first inpatient program, White Deer Run, out in Allenwood, Pa. I was a hardcore heroin and coke junkie from the mean streets of Washington Heights who was also only 19when the threat of jail or homelessness forced me into recovery. Of course, being the hardcore addict/hardhead that I was, I ended up both places and had to learn the hard way. I read this book daily in rehab and THOUGHT I had got it, but like it says in the book and in the rooms you have to WANT it in order to recover. Nobody can do it for you, recovery and surrender is up to the addicted person. This book showed up a handful of other times between the years of 1996-2005. Those years were miserable because I was in the grip of active addiction. But more or less, this book sat on my shelf for 8 years gathering dust while I slowly committed suicide. In early January of 2006 I picked it up once again, blew the dust off, and cracked it open. It still had a "new smell" believe it or not. I opened it up and a few minutes into it I broke down into tears. This was MY story, everything explained in the NA basic text is the life I have lived and have been living. I am FAAAAAR from a recovery thumper BELIEVE ME but what I can say is this much, this is the Bible for recovering addicts as the Big Book is to AA. I belong to both fellowships but it was NA and this basic text that saved my life. Within it, IF and the key word being if one is willing, are the steps and traditions and hope to stay clean, one day at a time. I have 79 days clean, a freaking MIRACLE for a junkie like me, and I attribute it to the basic text of NA and the fellowships. I agree with one other reviewer, even if you never touched a drink in your life but shot heroin or smoked crack or whatever, it won't hurt to pick up the AA "Big Book" as well. And I'll go on to say that picking up the CA fellowships Bible "Hope, Faith and Courage" is a good move too. Don't worry about mixed messages as my sponsor would say, all of the above have positive, life affiriming messages. But it is really the NA Basic Text which opened my eyes, over 10 years I owned and even read this book, but never really READ it until I was ready. If you are willing to surrender your addiction to the will of God of your understanding instead of your own selfish will, this is the book that you should have by your side. Another thing is that this is NOT a religious text it is spiritual, don't forget that! God simply means GOOD ORDERLY DIRECTION or can mean a million other acronyms, it is the SPIRITUALITY that is so prominent. There are Muslims, Orthodox Jews, Christinas, Buddhists, Taoists, Satanists, Scientologists, Agnostics, Atheists, and others too many to mention within the rooms who have read this book and found a better way to live. The other book one reviewer mentioned concerning Rational Recovery is pretty silly and I tell you why. YOU CAN'T DO IT ALONE! I don't care if your Tom Cruise or a bum from skid row, in order to recover you NEED fellow recovering addicts and you NEED the NA basic text.! It is just that simple, I tried recovering on my own and that was anything but RATIONAL. Again, I'm far from brainwashed by the fellowships, I just want to stay clean one day at a time and never have to shoot cocaine it into my arm EVER AGAIN. NA Basic Text= a GREAT way to start onto your new drug free and spiritual life! It is funny by reading this review I sound like the perfect NA poster boy but I have to drag my [...] to meeting half the time! Cracking open thebasic text, however, is ALWAYS a pleasure as well as a learning experience. Even if you are not an "addict" this is a very REAL and relatable book because it touches on LIFE problems as well. Reason being is that most addicts were addicted LONG before they ever picked up that needle, that crack stem, or that bottle, or the pill or the joint. Life goes on but through reading the NA text and working it's steps, it can go own CLEAN AND RENEWED and reading one page of the basic text is better than 1 gram or 1 kilo or 1 million!! The NA Basic Text can teach you things about LIFE and it is written for addicts, by addicts. The 12 steps and traditions are based on the 12 and 12 of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Grandaddy of it all, but back then in 1952 when Jimmy K founded NA as we know it today, addicts 9 times out o 10 were not welcome in AA. This book is all about CHANGE and RECOVERY. There isn't a better book out there about how to live clean and serene. Forget about picking up "Rational Recovery." I guarantee the author of that book never stuck a needle into an oozing abscessbecausee he was desperate to hit a vein. Sounds disgusting yes but this book "keeps it real" where other so called recovery books just fake the funk. All that aside, recovery has to be WANTED and then this book can help you along that journey, one ay at a time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Real-life Story
It is amazing to read Melody Beattie's life story of her battle with addiction and destructive behaviors. She leads by example showing what she did to overcome her problems. I was truely amazed by what she went through. This is a wonderful Real life story for anyone struggling with addictions to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostitution, drugs, to fame in codependency research
Wow. When a friend lent me a copy of this book, I had to buy myself one. This is such a terrific addition to literature and I am so enlightened to have read it. I read Codependent No More over and over with a 1980s copy, and I never would have guessed what Ms. Beattie went through to get where she's at today. Prostitution so she could get drugs, rape from drugged stupors, her arm being photographed with all its needle marks and used to show school children the horrors of drug use -- the clinicians certainly never thought she'd amount to anything, but she learned codependency is the root of all addiction.5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible story
Melody Beattie has a life story that I would never have imagined from Codependent No More. She has a powerful insight into how and why things happen and Playing It by Heart shows how she has truly "been there." This book was impossible to put down. 3-0 out of 5 stars Author went through hell
I am not an abused wife or battered woman, but I can still appreciate what the author went through. She gives the reader a mostly detailed journey through her personal hell.Having said that I find it puzzling that she would choose to go to a costume party as Nicole Brown and OJ Simpson, complete with ketchup on her neck.It was in terrible taste and the author tries to explain it by saying "the reality behind the charade was too important for me to abandon".Then she goes to tell that others at the party thought it was in bad taste and her italicized comments are "that they missed the point."Not surprisingly they did, didn't they. Apparently, she thought they would immediately realize she was abused? She also admits her two youngest children were quite disturbed seeing her dressed like that and she told them it was a game and left it to the babysitter to explain.I, for one, don't look for hidden meanings in Halloween costumes and since Ms. Weldon stressed her love and devotion to her children and how she didn't want them affected by the abuse, I find her attitude about the costumes and her children very strange to say the least.5-0 out of 5 stars The real deal
Michele Weldon does a magnificent job describing her harrowing journey through domestic violence, and she does so with clarity and unflinching honesty.Domestic violence crosses all socio-economic and cultural boundaries.Just as no two women are alike, no two violent marriages are identical; Ms. Weldon explains her own experience in such a way that anyone living through this hell will see some element of her own situation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a woman who has left an abusive marriage
Thank you Michele Weldon for writing your journey through living and leaving an abusive husband. ---Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars There's a practical way to end addiction. Who knew?
A great read for anyone who wants to reinforce that they are capable of cultivating their own, unique meaning in life. And, if you've been put off by the irrational teachings of 12 step groups, this book will help you realize that you are not crazy: You aren't powerless. You can choose what life goals to pursue -and you don't need the approval of strangers in a group or coerced faith in an ill-defined "Power Greater Than Yourself" to do so.
4-0 out of 5 stars It is easy to beat addiction in 10 days at Schick Shadel
As a former addict hooked on alcohol, I believe this book makes some valid recommendations. However, it doesn't need to be so hard to breal addiction to alcohol and many drugs.Ten days at Schick Shadel Hospital in Seattle and I, like tens of thousands of patients before me, was cured from years of slavery to alcohol. No meetings and no daily worries about wanting another drink. If you give the caring folks at Schick Shadel Hospital 10 days, they will give you back your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars To all of YOU who have written a review for this book
I am writing to all of you who have written a review about this book, and especially to Melody Beattie. To the person who mocked about Melody's inner civil war, or you're already a god or you will never ever hope to KNOW what an inner civil war is. And to the rest of you, this book is not about traveling through Nothern Africa, it is about INNER travel, if you were trying to read an action-packed James Bond or Indiana Jones story, you guys picked the wrong book. This is not a fiction book, it is a book about how to find your inner deamons, your fears, face them and come through truly successfuly. This is a "self-help" book, and should be rated accordingly. I lived an inner civil war myself, and Melody greatly helped in making me understand how everything lies in subtleness, awareness, in trusting the universe. In trusting yourself, in listening to yourself for once! Hence the name of the book. This certainly was one of the pivotal steps in helping me change my life. This book is for people WHO needs it, otherwise you'd be bored to hell, of course. Every kind of book, song, movie, painting, etc... has a porpuse and is meant for certain kind of people. Just stop for a moment and THINK before you rate a book...before you rate anything. It is NOT about "if I liked it or not", it is about "does it work?" This book is not a novel, it is a tool for those who need it. It didn't work for you because you didn't need it. I needed it, and guess what, it worked. It really did. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH MELODY, YOU REALLY HELPED SOMEONE BE MORE CONSCIOUS, MORE AWARE AND A BETTER PERSON. I ONLY WISH I COULD CONTACT YOU TO TELL YOU THIS PERSONALLY. GOD BLESS YOU, AND YOUR DAUGHTER. -Rafael Romo, Mexico City.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple but enlightening
The title of this enlightening read caught my eye, for the very fact that many of us, at some time, treat ourselves worse than do others. In Stop Being Mean to Yourself, Melody Beattie finds a unique way towards unraveling the reasons why this may be so.Beattie reaches the reader at the level of the solar plexus - an area of the body to which she refers several times as she recounts her 1996 journey through Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. While one may never see Giza's pyramids, Melody's "leap of faith" in that exotic locale helps the reader to vicariously experience her inner transformation, which is really what this book is about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Keep coming back -- to "Came To Believe"
I dip into this AA World Services publication daily. I find it best to read one story at a sitting and reflect on the comments and experience of the recovering person -- most of the short reflections are peoples'spiritual experiences in recovery and they range from the "bolt oflightening" to the slow emergence of everyday spirituality. Keep itwith your morning or evening meditation book(s) and dip into it. You'll"keep coming back." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Excellent "
For years I have struggled with poor social and communication skills which caused me great frustration. This book was written for people like myself who have grown up in the shadows of alcoholism and consequently did not develop some key life skills as a result of the alcoholic environment. This book is a must read.it is thoroughly well written, with examples and instructions on how to develop the life skills needed. i especially liked the chapter that focused on conversation clues, which gives scenarios that can be used in everyday life. Wonderful!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough detail for my taste
I'm a veteran of the "adult child" genre, and as I was reading this book, I found myself thinking that other books in my library covered this ground much more effectively for my taste.I found the tone of this volume somewhat simplistic and the sample person-to-person interactions a bit forced (which I suppose is the point), but that made it hard for me to relate to them or imagine myself carrying out the sample exercises.5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource
"Lifeskills" is one of those books everyone should own.It deals with the personality traits inherent in those from dysfunctional families (primarily, children of alcoholics) and presents"normal" functioning skills which children of alcoholics often donot learn.Even if one is not a product of an alcoholic environment, thisbook gives an excellent view of healthy, "normal" responses tolife's daily situations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spells out the unique dangers of teen drinking
Having navigated through the rocks and landmines of parenting three boys through adolescence, I know that drinking, at least occasionally, can be a part of the journey. We never encouraged it, never "enabled" it, never denied it.
5-0 out of 5 stars All the elements of a fantastic read are here!
As someone who has experienced the wrath of addiction up close and personally in family members - as have most of us - and been disappointed in the lack of personal stories focused on recovery, communication and scope of the issue, I was at first skeptical of this book when I read about it in a P
