5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for all those whose childhoods were less than perfect, and that's most of us
John Bradshaw does a beautiful job showing how we all carry a historical "inner child," the child we really were. When that child did not get the love and nurturance that it needed, it will either act out or act in later in our adult years.Bradshaw brilliantly shows the many ways in which the inner child got hurt and how it continues to contaminate our adult lives, unless and until we take steps to heal it.This book does not dwell on self-pity or blame; rather it focuses on understanding what happened, why it happened, and then dedicates the majority of the pages to a constructive approach to healing the inner child so that we can live a full, happy life.

5-0 out of 5 stars life changer
This is the first time that I have felt strong enough about a self help book to actually write a review. This book is one of the single most defintative reasons that I finally feel like I have the anwsers to the questions that have haunted me for 36 years.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Example of Inner Child Concept.
This followup to his book HEALING THE SHAME THAT BINDS YOU which catapaulted him into becoming a host of three PBS t.v. series based on his writings, ON FAMILY and ON HOMECOMING from this book, he explains why he believes in and uses 'existential philosophy.'He feels that we need a balance between Apollo, the god of form and structured discipline, and Dionysus, god of ecstasy and creativity. The secret of balance is that all of life is a marriage of opposites: "...no life without physical death; no joy without sorrow, no pleasure without pain; no light without darkness; no sound without silence; no good without bad.True health is a form of wholeness."

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely Growing Up Again
The book zoned in on what I had missed emotionally in my youth.I was able to put a finger on the fact that my life's foundation was based on denial and discounting, a topic that the book touched on a lot.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - Applies to All of Us!
Jean Illsley Clarke has given parents and families a real gift with this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" Book for anyone who wants to grow
Reading Growing Up Again has given me tremendous insights into the kind of parenting I was given and how that is affecting my parenting and grandparenting. I find that I go back to the book often and re-read portions of it. As an adoptee, I especially appreciated the chapter devoted entirely to adoption. Thank you, Connie and Jean! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My husband's secret revealed..I needed answers..I found them here!!
Easily, I could say that Patrick Carne's books on sexual addiction has saved my marriage and my husband's life and maybe my own as well. My first read was "Out of the Shadows" and it softened my angry heart after hearing my husbands confession of being with around 100 women over the past 5 years of our 17 year marriage and all sexual encounters were UNPROTECTED sex. I found out the hard way. How could all these powerful, crippling emotions that I was feeling be tamed?? How could I ever forgive this scrum of the earth!! READ this book and you can do the impossible!!
5-0 out of 5 stars As an Addiction Therapist I recommend this book to all of my clients seeking recovery from addiction to sex
Carnes can be readily credited for leading the way in developing a sound understanding of sex addiction and importantly, the treatment of this. By presenting sexually destructive behaviour within the paradigm of "addiction", Carnes has succesfully created a "problem to solution" model which offers a way out of sexually addictive behaviour. In "Don't Call it Love" Carnes offers a plan for living and a route out of this powerfully compelling condition. He manages to present a readable and coherent guide, outlining the multiple dimensions of both sex addiction and recovery from this. In his usual realisitic and compassionate style, this book makes it clear that the process of abstinence and recovery is concerned with helping "Good people get well" rather than helping "Bad people be good". Fundamentally, this book offers a clear message of hope to any person affected by sex addiction that recovery is indeed possible and importantly - enjoyable !!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book for Many People
"Don't Call It Love," by Patrick Carnes, is an important book in the growing body of literature on recovery from sexual addiction. Although it was published in 1991, it is still widely read and frequently quoted by recovering sex addicts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new or not obvious here
It's not that the information insn't correct, but it certainly isn't insightful. This seems like a mental exercise for a professor who just wants to get his name in print.Right away you're in trouble becuase he has you go through an exercise and then rate your optimism to see if this book could help you.if you are low on optimism, you need this book, if you are balanced, you need this book and if you are very optimistic, you still need this book.

Letting Go of Shame is an excellent self help guide. Each chapter ends with practical excercises. The material is presented in an orderly fasion, working through the issues one by one.The positive role that shame playsis covered, but the focal issue is toxic shame. It is easy for the readerto identify with symptomatic consequences of shame as each source of shameis presented. It is complementary to Bradshaw's classic book on thesubject and in many ways is a simpler presentation for the novice.Complexand technical language is avoided. This is a practical self help guide foranyone dealing with the self inflicting pain caused by shame. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK "SAVED MY MARRIAGE"
There are three of you in a marriage. YOU, ME and US. All three need to be happy. This book can get you there. It saved our marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A profound, important, and implication-rich book
For me this book is one of the most profound and important books I have ever read about relationships and communication.Although it is written as a book about marital relationships, it has implications for every kind of relationship, and not only intimate or dyadic ones. And, although it is written as a pop psychology book, I think it makes a real contribution to the social-scientific understanding of relationships and communication -- that is, it stands up well as a general model of communication and relationship.I think it is a great book and would be of great value not only to those trying to solve relationship problems but to those wanting to understand the ways in which self and relationship are intertwined in general. It illuminates all of the areas of one's life in which one communicates with others and, as another reader said, can be as valuable for understanding past relationships as for dealing with present ones. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Facing Reality
Dr. Carnes is a noted authority and perhaps the premier researcher in the area of sexual addiction. His work goes back easily some twenty years.I have studied with Dr. Carnes and I can say with some authority that this may be his finest work.It is the fruit of much thought and labor. It is reality.Carl Rogers said:"Until we can accept ourselves as we really are we can't change."This book, really a work book, helps the addicted person do just that. But it doesn't stop there. The addict is able to see through the work he does that he is able, through healthy activities, to regain control of his life. This is the second edition.Dr. Carnes demonstrates not only his high standards of authorship, but his humility and ability to accept constructive criticism both from within himself and I think perhaps others, in the changes he has put into this second edition. They are well worth the effort.Dr. Carnes comes at the sexual addiction issue with clarity, research, and above all empathy. His other work "The Recovery Zone,"will I think prove to be as well received as this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome resource
Recently diagnosed with ADD I've been battling at work for accommodations. My doctor/therapist provided me a document for accommodations just this week.It took the harrassment from a supervisor away.I went to HR and let her know that the Department Manager has been very good about this, letting me know what he expects.I mentioned that I had read in the book about the need for organizers and I would have purchased a Palm today, but the store was out.She got up, pulled out a box and there was a Palm. She indicated that this could be used as an accommodation.I asked if I found the reference if that would be enough and it was agreed.I went back to my desk, and turned to the right page, took it back to her, and she's putting in a request to have it installed on my computer at the office and it's now an accommodation.I've followed the advice in the book about using "to do" lists, and it has really helped to keep me focused just on what I need to do.I highly recommend the book, as well as Sari Solden's "Women with ADD"

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs updating
While reading some of the previous reviews, I saw one that mentioned "contemporary science" - written in 1999. The first Amazon.com customer review for this book is from 1997. If I'd read it then, I would have rated it higher. But a book that deals with anything medical needs to be updated long before it's a decade old, which this one now is. The chapter on medication is completely outdated; it shouldn't be referred to by anyone who wants to know what options are available now. And while all the scientific/medical questions about ADD/ADHD haven't been answered, more is known now than when this book was written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful, Barely Comprehensible Format
A year or so ago I bought a bunch of self-help books blindly online, with the hope they would represent their titles and be of some use to me personally.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for this much-needed resource!
Adult survivors of abuse have only the twisted guidance of screwed-up parents to guide them through life. Only the worst cases of abuse make the news. Some people don't even realize they were abused until they look back on their childhoods with an adult's wisdom and insight - a child often thinks the dysfunctional situation is normal and doesn't realize that this doesn't happen in all families - nor should it. Knowing what's normal is impossible for us - because we never knew what normal was! Essential for the adult survivor

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect.
If you've had a troubled childhood, this book will amaze you at its accuracy. It knows your problems, perceived "shortcomings", and more. It also gives you the insight into why it happens or why you continue to do it. However, it does NOT give you enough in the way of constructive methods of ridding yourself of these behaviors. While it maintains an upbeat and cheery tone for its entire length, there just isn't enough substance there for my liking.

Have purchased many of this title for a prison Bible Study group I do volunteer work with. Although I haven't personally read it, the members of the study group speak highly of it and frequently request more copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for Christians
As an educator and a therapist, I have recommended this book to my Christian clients/patients and students. My clients report that the book has enhanced their recovery as they can tie their Step work to Biblical teachings. My students, particularly those who are not in recovery but are learning about substance abuse, have reported that the text has given them a base from which to understand the Steps more deeply and allowed them to feel more comfortable about their ability to use the Steps in their ministries.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Twelve Steps for Christians
My husband and I previously read this book and were very impressed. We are both in recovery and were avid believers in Jesus Christ. All of the traditional recovery books were vague in their spirituality, and we could relate and grow from this book.We currently use this book in our ministry, which is a recovery ministry in our church. We see many other people being blessed from it as well.I think people that have not had to deal with different addictions/bondages in their lives, could benefit from the steps/tools that are available in this book! ... When my granddaughter was born still, I immediately turned to the solace offered by the written word, finding that to be much more helpful than the empty cliches and platitudes offered by acquaintances. This is an incredible collection of writing, both fiction and nonfiction, essay and poetry, on the subject of the loss of a child. Many, if not most, of the writers included have experienced this most devastating of all losses. The authors introduce each section with personal writing that forms an intimate connection. They draw from classic literature as well as modern, making this a book that offers something to everyone. I found myself re-reading sections in an attempt to hold off coming to the end of this sustaining book. I doubt this book will ever make it to my bookshelf, as I will be turning to it often for inspiration and comfort.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one I still read...
It's been five years since the death of my precious son and although many books were helpful in the early months and years this is the one that has lingered with me the longest. I still turn to it from time to time, especially on the hard days.
1-0 out of 5 stars The most depressing book I have ever read
I found this book to be extremely depressing and full of despair, which someone who has lost a child doesn't need to feel more of.This book offered no hope and must have been written by authors who believe they will never see their children again.I refuse to look at life and death that way and instead choose to have hope of reuniting with my daughter and peace in knowing that she is in a much better place than we are.Obviously I would not recommed this book for anyone who has lost a child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Empirically grounded and very useful
I believe this book represents the best kind of clinical psychology. It is well grounded in research and empirical knowledge, but is also written in such a way as to be useful for people who are not.It focuses not just on the dos and don'ts, but on the whys as well. I think it will be useful for therapists to use with their clients, as well as for people who don't have (or don't want) a therapist.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sound research and good practice
I am a professor of clinical psychology with over 150 publications primarily on some aspects of sexual offending and 15 years experience working with sexual offenders.I have also edited several books and authored two others on the explanation, assessment, and treatment of sexual offenders. In my view this is an outstanding publication which manages to combine excellent scholarship with sound practical advice for individuals with sexual disorders. It is written in a clear and straight forward manner and I think will engage offenders in the process of learning to manage their destructive actions and turning their lives around. It shouldprove useful as an adjunct resource for therapists and also provide individuals reluctant to seek therapy with some valuable strategies for controlling their sexually deviant behavior. This is an excellent addition to the treatment literature.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide for People with a Sexual Addiction
This book offers guidance for individuals who struggle with an addiction to sex.It is written in a practical, often entertaining, and always enlightening way.It can be used on its own or in conjunction with psychotherapy.I wish I had had this book in the past as an adjunct to conducting psychotherapy with my patients who have had such problems.I will be sure to use it with patients in the future. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Does not help at all
I actually returned this book because it had very little , if anything, to do with WHY you actually compulsively eat. it did not go into or even explained the psychological factors that influence C.O. all this book talk about is how women's self-image is polluted with diet ads etc, etc. it does not deal at all with how to actually stop, in an effective way.
5-0 out of 5 stars true story
This book is full of good information on why a person overeats. It isn't a book you can read in one evening. It will take some time to read it thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its not about food
I wish I could say I lost 20 pounds but I haven't but am on the way too. I'm 5'4 and 120 pounds and obsess about food. Although it focused on undereating which to me was very annoying because overeating is more of an epidemic than undereating, yet the authors chose to equate the two. Anyways, this book is a worth read because for once in my life they made me believe that food is not your friend, it is not a panacea, it is just food, and it doesn't solve your problems. For years I have hid in food, now I am mad because I can no longer do so. It was easy, but it didn't work. For the first time in 2 years I cried, I stopped myself, but at least I did it a little. Anyhow, I recommend this book for the sole fact that it broke up my relationship with food, which is very painful but I am no longer a coward. ... Read more
