I think the maximum benefit of this book comes to a person with a serious binging problem.The first part of the book describes the nature of food addiction and gives many examples.The second part of the book descibes the recommended food plan for people with a food addiction.The food plan is extreme - but probably appropriate for treating a severe problem.

I grew up crying myself to sleep for overeating: hating myself wondering why I couldn't stop forcing food in my face even though I was horrified by any extra weight and my stomach was beyond full. Why didn't the threat of being heavy stop me? Why was I eating when I was way past full? Why could I not stop myself when what I really wanted was to stop myself?

After 50 years of active food addiction, I am abstinent for four years using the work of Kay Sheppard described in this book. As a result of this abstinence, a whole new life has opened up to me. I recommend this book to those for whom food intake or withholding is an issue. It saved my life.

I've yet to finish reading it (procrastination is one of my bad behaviors :) but about 3/4 through I can't say enough about this book.Too many books give you fluff, whereas this is a good blend of real life illustrative stories from their patients, along with what I really wanted... practical how-to steps along with a thorough description of how & why we learn and practice the behaviors we so abhor in ourselves.I already knew I was "choosing" my bad behaviors, but hadn't found anything that described why I was making such bad choices, and how to stop.This is none of that self hypnosis mumbo jumbo, but real suggestions on how to identify what you are doing and why, and then to catch yourself, and methodically replace bad behaviors with good ones.

The first half of the book is all you need to read inorder to figure out your self-defeating behaviors to come to light and systematically changing them so you can make the right choices to be happy, purposeful, and meaningful in all aspects of your life. The second half of the book felt like it was repeating the first half. overall a great eye opener on human behaviors and why we constantly limit ourselves with the wrong choices to be in the "in crowd" and not listening to our inner self. I have definitely gained a measure of power in making the right choices. i do recommend reading it at least a couple of times to fully understand the principles.

The uncanny knack of these authors to address the "foregone conclusions" that everyone, even organizations and governments face, as well as individuals, as they process the mission and objectives that motivate them offers a new avenue of change - for both undesirable habits and desires, but also for those we rarely think about within this context, like sex, like racism, like self defense mechanisms, etc., and other "impressions" of expectations rooted in concrete memories.

I read this book after reading "A Sponsorship Guide for 12-Step Programs" by M.T.Both are very good books.The book by M.T. offers a more casual approach, IMO, to Sponsorship than does this book by Hamilton B.It also offers a variety of viewpoints."Twelve Step Sponsorship: How It Works" gives very specific and direct answers to many questions that Sponsors and Sponsees have about their Fellowship and how to maintain a Sponsor/Sponsee relationship while working all of the 12 Steps together.The second half of the book does present a meeting study guide for a Sponsor to use, with suggested readings for the Sponsee, suggested questions, and even offers a discussion of the questions the Sponsee should answer prior to a meeting with the Sponsor and at the meeting.As far as a manual for a Sponsor of any 12 Step program, this is the book to use.The author primarily targets those in AA, but is very sensitive to the needs of those in other recovery programs and the Appendix includes the 12 Steps of other Fellowship Groups.I can highly recommend this book, which also gives guidance on how you, the Sponsor, will know when your Sponsee has completed a Step and how to procede with them to the next step.Hamilton B. also offers advice on how to help your Sponsee move to the next step if they become reluctant to move to the next step.

Finally I have found the answers I have been searching for. I feel as if I have read every book on dieting and not dieting and most of them will tell you what to eat, what not to eat or that you are eating for all the wrong reasons. OK, great, I know that...so HOW DO I STOP? This book guides you through the process of recognizing the emotions that lead to overeating and guides you through the process of sitting with the emotions instead of eating through them. The author is so right on with the thought process and behaviors of emotional eaters (such as describing how we may come home and we are tired and instead of getting rest, we have a need to reconnect or unwind and tend to start eating at that point...I certainly can relate to that!), yet she takes it to the next level and beyond by giving tools to deal with feelings and emotions that don't involve food for coping. She doesn't suggest eating celery or lettuce or 15 gallons of water. This is not about temporary distractions, but permanent healing. I have a circle of friends that have recently purchased this book and we can't wait to have everyone go through it and start a discussion group!

I've never written a review before, but I feel very strongly about this book because it's changed my life. One of the author's central premises is that you need to deal with your emotions instead of eating to make them go away. Once I understood it; something clicked. In the past two weeks, I've lost 4 pounds without dieting; the difference is that I haven't pigged out when I get upset. I feel a million times better about myself and know that I can change my life.

I love this book. I'm actually still doing the exercises in the book. I believe there are almost 90 exercises. Geneen requires you dig deep. The first few days of doing the work, I was a mess. I have used food to not deal with my emotions for so many years, that it actually brought me back to my emotional self as a teenager. My first diet started when I was 15 at 102 pounds! I had went over that 100 pound mark then, started my first diet, and never dealt with my emotions after that unless it involved food. I'm almost 40 years old now and thought this vicious cycle would never end. The more I dieted and deprived myself, the more I weighed in the end.

This book was recommended by my therapist.It opened my eyes to a few things I did not see before.It helps you put words and faces to things you see and experience.It is very enlightening and helpful!!I would highly recommend it for anyone.It helps you to see and understand codependency, and ways that it manifests in our lives and childhood.It gives examples of functional and the dysfunctional.I just got the workbook that goes along with it, and am currently working on it.I give it many kudos!

We all know that when we drop a stone in one part of a pond it creates ripple effects.Its the same thing with a person's life from the very beginning, what happens to him or her in childhood creates a ripple effect or domino effect all the way to the present.People often say that they are who they are not just because of their inborn traits but also because of their experiences in life.If what you have experienced in childhood made you who you are, which in turn influenced your behavior in your adolescent and teen-age years, which again added new negative experiences for we know how brutal adolescent and teen-age years are, which again affected you and rippled effect to your 20's....the vicious cycle doesn't end.It is like what Chaos Theory is saying, "Sensitivity to initial reaction" it is observed everywhere: one domino, in a long line of dominos, fall..the rest fall too one by one; in a house of card you take off one from the bottom and a slight mistake will make the whole house of card fall; how you angled your shooting arm SLIGHTLY different from how you usually shoot a basketball affects the angle of the ball GREATLY by the time it gets close to the rim....this is because the effects can be INCREMENTAL, meaning for example as a person is growing up, the effects of childhood may not be noticable because its effects are incremental over the years, it COMPOUNDS in a way that you are not AT THE RIGHT LEVEL in your life...everybodys doing a Marathon and your not doing anything with your life at all, or your doing a one-hundred meter dash while everybody else is doing a Marathon, my point is your not doing it LEVEL by LEVEL as you grow up which in the long run compounds enough to begin to affect you adversely.If you were not doing anything in life at all later on you'll feel sorry for it for everybody lived their life, their at 8 and you are still at 4, and if you tried to be so ahead all of your life you might one day regret it because you didn't get to live life like how everybody else lived life, they went through 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10, you jumped from 1 to 10, MISSING OUT all in between! so childhood has a long effect on a person's life, maybe you can incrementally break free of your childhood, see what happens.

I was really disappointed when I read this book.If you've read the 12 steps of compulsive overeating, then you've pretty much read this book.It tells you the same thing.It takes forever to get you to the place where you can create your own meal plan...and what a joke!There's no way I can stick to something like that.I would starve too death!

After I read the book and was very disappointed, I went on-line to write this review.I find myself agreeing completely with the reviews that gave this book a low rating.It is yet another attempt to espouse the virtues of the 12 step Overeaters Anonymous program.While I think there are good aspects of the 12 step program and that it may help some, there are many that the program simply wouldn't work for, including myself.Mainly, I think, because it mandates that you cut flour, sugar, and other foods completely from your diet. I feel that this sets a person up to fail because one ends up feeling deprived, which leads to binging.In fact there is a whole chapter in the book that talks about case studies and nearly every person mentioned has relapsed and is valiantly trying to get back to abstinence and lose the weight yet again.I would suggest that instead of working a program that obviously isn't working, they should perhaps seek another solution, maybe in the form of professional counseling.I would recommend "The Solution" by Laurel Mellin, which is a comprehensive support solution with groups and pyschologists around the country practicing the methods given in the book.I have found this method much more helpful than Overeaters Anonymous ever was.If OA is working for you, then I think that is great, but if you are like me and do not find that it fits you, I encourage you to look elsewhere.The Solution is a great place to start, and if you want to check out the website go to WWW.Sweetestfruit.com.

What a disappointment!The authors’ answer to binge-eating is simply eliminating all sugar, flour, fat, caffeine, or whatever your “trigger” foods are from your diet.Not only that, but they insist you must weigh and measure your food all the time for the rest of your life.That’s hardly what I consider freeing yourself from obsessing about food.They actually recommend keeping an emergency food kit in your car to be sure you always have measuring cups, a food scale, and several cans of “safe” food available to you at all times.Perhaps this is wise advice for people who are morbidly obese, but for those of us who are at a normal weight, or only slightly over, and are looking for some insight and realistic advice on dealing with compulsive/binge eating, this book is NOT the answer! ... This very well written books offers insights about who we are as a person and why we are the way we are.I found the book very comforting because it reinforced what I was feeling inside.This book also gives advice about how to change.I think that even if you don't come from an "abusive" family you should read this book because I know that everyone can relate and learn from it in many ways.

Excellent. A bit dated but timeless content. The beginning and end speaks to AA type meetings but it's not the main focus of the book, co-dependency is, which just about everyone deals with growing up. Quick read. There are a few short stories featuring animals that are sprinkled betweenthe chapters,adding levity and a moment to escape and explore how the new information may serve you. My favorite, The Goose, whose parents told her not to leave the pond despite her feeling sick but she finally did leave and discovered she was right. The family unit unknowingly puts family members into positions and then keeps them there unable to see the dysfunction. Once one family member took action leaving the others behind the others eventually followed. If one family member is acting out and you don't know why it is not always the issue of the one who is acting out, look beyond, look to yourself first. Highly recommended.

Illuminating and frightening.We all have baggage and until we find a place to safely store it, those closest to us are also burdened with it.The ideas in this book promote taking responsibility for our actions, looking into the motivations of those actions, and examining the source of our attitudes without placing blame on anyone.It's a great book about growing up to be healthy and facing one's demons without guilt.It's a relief to read this material and know that it's OK to feel a certain way, and even better to feel that healthy change is possible. ... Offering information and answers to parents who are dealing with this issue is what makes Ms. Natenshon's book so unique. In addition to providing great information in a clear and easy to understand manner, the author prepares a clear path for parents and professionals to understnad how to prevent and ultimately to treat various eating disorders. A must have for anyone coping with this difficult issue.

I am a 29 year old adult who went through the recovery process of an eating disorder 10 years ago. Upon experiencing a reoccurrence of the disorder, I read this book. I was elated with the knowledge and kindness vibrating off the pages. I have gotten back on track thanks to Abigail. In addition to the education on Eating Disorders, I found this book a GEM on communicating. It has changed the way my husband and I speak and listen to one another, as well as our young children. It encourages family dynamics be explored to help recovery, but is it not a good lesson for all parents (families)to learn to "hear" what is said, and to what is not said. I will keep this book on my shelf as an invaluable resource for Eating Disorders, or any emotional disorder that may come up, for parenting, and for communication skills. Thank you, Abbie for your time and efforts in writting this book.

This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn how to love an eating disordered child or adult. We were dealing with this for 5 years already before I found this book, and I can't emphasize enough how encouraging, informative, supportive and instructive this book is! Anyone who thinks they might have a child with an eating disorder would benefit from getting this book as soon as they can, but I have also recommended that our counselors and family therapist buy this book as well. They would benefit from the depth and breadth of Abigail's experience, but also, it would help considerably with their family therapy sessions if they gave the families this book to read. Most books are written to try to help the person who has the disorder. This book is especially for the caregivers and the parents who experience all the heartache and confusion of trying to help their child. Abigail Natenshon really understands that heartache and confusion and is able to communicate care and concern for theparents and families and yet such helpful instructions on steps they can take. She really believes in the importance of the family system to help the recovery process. The best book I've yet read on compulsive eating.One line touched me to the core.Do I eat to mother myself because I never got any; to nurture myself?Maybe that's why I need a dog, someone who I feel loves me totally and completely as me, not as a daughter or a wife?But this book also showed some very sick people in regards to food, some very bad binges and sneak eating.My life and thought do tend to revolve around food - buying it, cooking it, eating it.The writing is excellent.Roth should really write a novel or something more demanding.She can write well.I do wonder if the writing of other women was not polished up by her.

Living with an eating-disordered father all my life, it's no surprise that I started sneaking and hoarding food up in my bedroom by the age of 6. He snuck his binge foods, too, existing on diet Coke, eggbeaters, fat-free cheese, and salads of entire heads of lettuce adorned with other fat free vegetables and topped with fat-free dressing to take to work-- where he'd eat a 2lb. bag of M&M's in one shift. When I became clinically bulimic at 12, he slowly ceased restocking the pantry and fridge. I was hospitalized on an eating disorders unit twice- first merely because of the bulimia. My mother, at least, was perfect happy about the 18 extra lbs I'd lost, no matter how dangerously they'd gone. The second time I was admitted to the same unit, I had been purging every last thing I ate, and spent all of my free time either trying to mimick the detailed exercise charts of "true-life anorexic memoirs" OR bingeing and purging my brains out.

I felt that this book effectively serves two purposes. First, it is an outstanding resource for survivors of sexual abuse and their partners to feel that they are not alone in their struggles and experiences. Second, as a clinician, this book gave me great insight to the experience of a sexual abuse survivor and gave me direction to use with clients who are survivors. After I finished reading it I loaned it to a client right away. Her response to reading it was as positive as mine.

It's hard to find actual exercises for you and your partner like in this book. They work even if you figured out a few on your own, it's nice to know why they work so well. It's also good to hear the male side, I wasn't really sure how many men had been abused before, now I know. I bought this book, which is titled The Sexual Healing Journey, when I started healing from being abused in my childhood. When I first read this thorough book I felt able to relate to many of the topics. When the author said we give ourselves two impossible choices by telling ourselves we can't stay because of our fear and panic, yet we can't leave because of the failure and humiliation, she really hit it on the nail for me. Giving myself two possible choices - it's okay to stay, and it's okay to leave - opened up a new reality for me. I never told myself before I read this book that it's okay if I leave a panicked situation. I always beat myself on the head and feared it meant I could never go back. I didn't realize how harshly I was treating myself until I saw another possibility, the "B-Talk," which is about accepting myself, giving myself options, and seeing anxiety from a new way. This book really is a life changer.

I was homebound from 19 to 22 with agoraphobia. With counseling, Paxil, and the tools in this book I was able to go from being afraid of my own shadow to attending a 48,000-student University 1000 miles away from home by myself. I no longer have agoraphobia symptoms whatsoever and still keep a copy of this book around to read just in case I ever feel the fear again.
