4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good read
I liked the book and it didn't take long for me to read it. I did not grow up in a home with alcoholism or drug addiction (Other than nicotine), but I was able to relate to a lot of what was written in the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I didn't find journaling and the recovery phase at all helpful. I think it's a lot of theory and not enough practical wisdom and the section on making requests for what you want in your partner totally ridiculous. In real life this doesn't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recovery Tools
This book was recommended by my therapist. After going thru the whole book and writing all the exercises, I have unlocked and unloaded a ton of childhood pain and trauma. You will shed floods of tears and feel terrible feelings you have buried, but this process is like the purging of toxins so you can begin to heal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling good Hand Book
this is an excellent self help book that can be used in conjunction with treatment to address depression, anxiety, and relationship issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Addition
Definitely a useful companion to go along with the basic text.Sincerely and consistently practice the principles within these books and your life will change.Never give in to the despair of depression, it is an evil that can be conquered on a daily basis with persistence and courage.I personally know about the hell of depression, and also know that there is a way through it.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive therapy classic
I read this book when I was going through a divorce several years ago.The handbook helped me to review the thinking that was contributing to my depression. Although my depression was situational, I was overwhelmed and was filtering information negatively.Recently, my son went through a depression and I gave him this book and another excellent book, Optimal Thinking--How to Be Your Best Self that provides specific questions to resolve disturbing emotions.I recommend each of these books. ... Editorial Review

"I fell for the great American dream, female version, hook, line, and sinker," Marya Hornbacher writes. "I, as many young women do, honest-to-God believed that once I Just Lost a Few Pounds, suddenly I would be a New You, I would have Ken-doll men chasing my thin legs down with bouquets of flowers on the street, I would become rich and famous and glamorous and lose my freckles and become blond and five foot ten." Hornbacher describes in shocking detail her lifelong quest to starve herself to death, to force her short, athletic body to fade away. She remembers telling a friend, at age 4, that she was on a diet. Her bizarre tale includes not only the usual puking andstarving, but also being confined to mental hospitals and growing fur (a phenomenon called lanugo, which nature imposes to keep a body from freezing to death during periods of famine). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I never truly left this book until it was done. I stopped at points and it took perhaps a week to finish, but it was always on my mind. I rolled over her story in my head as I went about my days (or daze).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, witty and very honest book
I've read a few lame teenage oriented, moralistic, politically correct books about eating disorders, but THIS is something completely different! Not only because Marya is a real, tallented writer, but even more because her writing is so honest, detailed and yet humorous in some strange way. She doesn't whin about her situation, she doesn't blame all the world and society, but she neither powders herself with ashes. She just tells her story, a story of a very seriuos, determined, tallented and unique girl who decided to become really thin and pushed her dieting obsession to its very limits, to the very edge of death. Details of her starving and purging practices, and of her inventive, deceiving methods to convince her family, friends and medical personel that she's fine, are scary, but this brutal realism makes you really think about eating disorders. Her eating disorder is not just a disorder, it's a real full-time job, a lifestyle, a dedication, and it's extremly frightening. I found her comments about her recent life very good and revealing too.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
Marya Hornbacher paints a real and vivid image of her experience with anorexia. This is the best book on anorexia and bulimia I have ever read. I keep coming back to this book- I could read it again and again just because of Hornbachers talent for writing. She truely has a gift!

I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting.Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives. To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul. For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe. Please give this practice a try! This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.

"I believe in listening to the hunger of your body, and of your heart. Begin to actually look inside and see what it is you really, really want with your relationship with food, and how to get there." ~Geneen Roth
5-0 out of 5 stars Life saver 100% Recomended
You will hear from Geneen Roth herself her story and how to break free from emotional eating, im 27 years old and beign fat as a child I started to diet very early on in my life, as long as I can remember I have been on a diet, I started my first diet when i was 10 years old, so as you can imagine my life has been centered on loosing wheight and after loosing it gaining it again an so on for what it seem like an eternity.
5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST have book!!!!
This book and ANY Geneen Roth book is a life changer.I think her bold honesty about herself makes is ok to start being honest withyourself. She will change your life!I got more out of reading her books than therapy!!She has been there and done that.Have you ever gone through a drive in and ordered enough for an entire family but it was just for you. Then you say to the little speaker things like, 'and my kids want xxx' and you don't have kids!! When we eat in the middle of the night and no one sees it....we have ourselves convinced that doesn't count. The best of the book(s) is not just how she can bring the honesty out of the closet but she really address how emotions and eating go together and what we are really doing.Brilliant!!The work book she also has is really deep!If you want to deal with your emotional eating there is no other way to handle it than by Geneen Roth. She is the best! (and I am not related to her or a personal friend!) Like I said the key to her books is she has REALLY been there and done that and won the battle.I would give more than five stars if I could. It is a life changer!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kitty Got it Right
In 1995 my husband had exhausted all traditional treatments for depression. The Duke neurologists sent us to Menninger in Topeka, KS for ECT. My husband had 15 treatments. He left the hospital the week after his last treatment.(He was a retired Executive who had become catatonic in his depressive-state).He then began living again...He returned to his Gentleman's Farm in North Carolina and re-took the reigns. He had more energy than I did, and I was 30 years younger...
5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Informative
My Psychiatrist mentioned ECT Treatments some time ago and I immediately dismissed the suggestion based on my ignorance of it.I was uninformed and afraid of it.But, after reading this book, I'm going to bring up the subject of ECT Treatments next session.I don't know what will happen, but ECT is now an option for me to at least seriously consider.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
If you are an ACoA (Adult Child of an Alcoholic), I recommed this book and all of the books by Janet Woititz.I've read many of them, they are easy reads and so informative. It is really helpful to learn about other's experiences and struggles, and to hear advice on how to help you now.My favorite part of this book is the chapter called "So, you love an ACoA..." and is good for your partner to read to help them understand things like why you might overreact to certain situations or have such a negative view of yourself.Don't be turned off by the old cover, mine looked like it was from 1960 or something, the book is not outdated by any means.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential
as a partner to an ACOA this is a must read for anyone involved in this kind of relationship.easy to read, easy to understand, and full of AHA! moments. great information!

5-0 out of 5 stars I learned about healthy relationships
I thought I knew about relationships and how to make one work and what it took to keep one going.I thought my past failures were a product of bad timing.I did not see why I went after the wrong people, prused bad situations and stayed when I should have left. This book opened my eyes and changed my perspective. It was brilliant. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing.
Morgan Menzie's Diary of an anorexic girl is truly amazing and heartfelt. It is by far one of the best diaries that i have ever read. It goes deep into Blythes descent into Anorexia and to her recovery. I used to anorexic, so this truly touched me. Though it may be triggering to someone who is still battling an ED it is worth the Read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk About Real!!!
Morgan Menzie's book was the first diary of an eating disorder I read, and is the reason why I continue to read more ED books. She unlike many ED authors talked about things other that just her eating disorder, such as relationships with friends, family and boyfriends. It's not a book that's all about anorexia but does emphasize more so than other subjects in her diary.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written
This book was probably the best book that I ever read. I absolutely loved it. I couldn't put it down. When Blythe would be so close in getting a boyfriend and then fly off the handle it would get me worked up, and it made me want to tell her "Calm down. Do you know what you doing?" I would get happy for her when she was so close to a boyfriend and something to bring happiness into her life, and then she would do something crazy and destroy all my hopes of her being happy. I couldn't believe that Becca was so stupid and didn't realize that she wasn't getting better. I can't believe that she just believed the food charts that Blythe did, even though she hadn't gained any weight or looked any diifferent. I was like "How stupid can you be lady!" This book really gets you involed and it made me wonder how people can be anorexic, but the problem is not their eating it is caused by something else. Once you figure out that problem and get it solved it will be easier to get yourself back on track and keep you regular. ... Read more

Within my firts three years of sobriety I read this along with the second and third year edition. They were extremely accurate and helped me to deal with the trials and tribulations of sobriety at the time.I would recommend these titles to anyone who desires to be knowledgable and gain understanding about the process of recovery they are engaged in.

I found this to be a very useful addition to AA literature for people who are making their first serious attempt at getting sober and staying sober. The author understands the challenges that alcoholics/addicts face and presents interesting case studies of people who have faced the struggles and the victories of a newly sober person in this crazy world.5-0 out of 5 stars First-Year Sobriety

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important books I've ever read
I initially bought this book because I wondered if being in love was just an addiction. But I learned so much more than that. This book should be helpful for practically everyone. It talks about how our love relationships are related to unmet needs from childhood. It described my parents relationship almost exactly and I see how it affected me. It was amazing that anyone knew all this stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
Not only discusses the symptoms, but also walks you through some steps to stop it, and to work through it. A wonderful book. I keep it on my bedside and consult it frequently even though I have read it cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for addicts who want real love!
I can't believe I am the first one to review this book! After struggling with addictions of all sorts for years (including alcohol, drugs, sex, and love addiction), I finally determined why I kept sabotaging my relationships with women. My compulsive search for something to help me feel less pain came from my childhood, and this book was the stepping stone that helped me see that there was hope to overcome this tricky addiction, seek help, and learn to love myself and others with authenticity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Vulnerable, Thought Provoking
This healing book was also a real page-turner.I found that the author's honesty and vulnerability was refreshing.Although we all have our own stories, Ms. Roth writes about the feelings that accompany our stories and how these feelings are sometimes temporarily smothered in the warmth and comfort of food.Of course, food can't cure emotional pain...only physical hunger.Ms. Roth's book provides readers with hope that it's possible to heal old pain and put food in it's proper perspective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth despite the distractions
Roth is a motivational speaker of sorts and it took me a while to get past her lack of psychological or other expertise, but I eventually gave her credibility for having worked with thousands of overweight women.Another gripe I had about the book is that it has a little too much of her personal history, which persuades me that she has issues she isn't dealing with yet herself. But above all that, I found the truths of her main points about complusive eating to be paralyzing for their profundity -- we have to heal ourselves emotionally to get eating under control. Sounds obvious, but she takes the reader much deeper.I think it's on page 125 or 126 where she lists questions that each of us must be able to face and answer in order to conquer both goals.I copied the page and use it as a sort of guide in my own emtional growth. In short, I recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an important book
Ok, so I thought this book was going to be ridiculously dweeby; I saw it years ago and resisted it because the title embarassed me. But I read it in less than 48 hours because it spoke to me. It's a very powerful memoir that I'm sure will resonate with a lot of people. It's so important to confront the past and not oppress ourselves in the present because we've suffered as a result of something outside ourselves. It's also an important alternative to the food nazis and didactic fitness industry types who are just hateful towards people who have real problems to deal with. Very inspiring, very empowering. ... The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!
Words can't even express how grateful I am to Caroline Knapp for writing this book. I've never seen my own thoughts and emotions over alcohol put into words and expressed so freely. I never really thought about my inner monologue before, or how I rationalize my drinking and subconsciously always make sure it is available. I've been seeing a counselor and have tried several times in the past to quit drinking. I don't think I had the strength to do so 100% until after I read this. I honestly feel like she followed me around w/ a video camera and electrodes hooked up to my brain to read my thoughts for the past 15 years! It allowed me to take a good look at myself and truly be honest with myself about my drinking and beahviors. This book was so powerful to me, and I urge any woman who is struggling w/ their own alcohol addictions to read it. You'll realize you're not alone!

If you want to understand why your eating habits are out of control, this is the book which explains it!This book has really helped me to understand why I am so addicted to sugar and flour, and explains how one needs to abstain from these foods.I still have to rely on O.A. in order to keep the motivation to eat properly, but I come back to this book on a regular basis to keep my mind focused on why I keep returning to bad eating habits and how I am not to blame.GREAT BOOK.

Ironically, it was a negative comment written by another reviewer that told me this was the book for me!They had mentioned the author's prescription of abstinence from sugar and white flour products to stop the carvings. You see, I know firsthand that this is a necessary and extremely effective step in combating food cravings and the binges that characterize a food addiction. (By the way this is not an "Atkins like" diet in any way, shape or form - you are still allowed heatlhy whole grains, fruits etc.)I just didn't know WHY it worked for me.For more than a year, I abstained from eating white flour products, fruits and sugars due to actual food allergies and as a wonderful side effect, all of my cravings for and obsessive thoughts about these foods ceased completely.I was no longer driven to or dependent on food. However, because I wasn't aware of why I had been so dependent on food in the past, I allowed myself to have a slice of cake on my birthday which turned out to be a huge mistake.Bam!I was right back in and I haven't been able to abstain ever since. After reading this book, I uncovered the other more important and insidious reason for my inability to regain abstinence - namely, the emotional issues that drive me to food. This aspect of the book, is the most important of all. This book feels like it was written for me.I've had every thought, every feelingDr. Katherine relates. Her writing exposes my inner life, a life I thought was mine alone but in reality most, if not all, overeaters share the same experiences!Do yourself, your body, your soul a favor and buy this book! Thank you Anne Katherine! ... Read more

Sexual anorexia
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a deeper perspective
After having tried different kinds of books and therapy which mainly is focusing on the technical aspects of sex with little success or progress, I feel that this book really goes behind the technical and offers a more complete explanation as to why some people have a difficult relationship with sex.
4-0 out of 5 stars Empathetic and brave
This book has been very useful to me. It's written with a good deal of compassion and insight, and even though I think the authors oversimplify some issues, they manage to get near the heart of what makes sex so difficult for many people. The recommended activities are generally weak and none too useful, but that's true of most self-help books. Even the good ones. ... Read more

Additictions & Grace did not spare the truth about addictions, chemical, behavioral and people. However, as always, grace abounds for those caught in the snares of addiction. The Great Hound of Heaven continues His relentless pursuit of those who are lost until they are found.

Excellent book discussing the spirituality surrounding addiction and recovery.Spirituality, in my opinion, is the essence and a necessity in recovery and daily life.Highly recommended read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to Addiction.
This book covers the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of addiction. The chapters on the physical and psychological aspects of addiction are excellent. The chapters on the spiritual aspect of addiction lacked a unifying systematic theology and at times seem rambling. The book ends with some good advice on overcoming addiction including not making addictions more complicated than they need to be, and living with the longing that is within all of us. ... Read more

Editorial Review

In recent decades, many of those studying alcoholism have come to see it as a disease, rather than as a character flaw or a failure of will. And yet, alcoholism is most often treated through counseling. Joan Mathews Larson and her colleagues at the HealthRecovery Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, discovered a series of nutritional deficiencies in alcoholics, and found that with proper dietary adjustments, they could help almost three-quarters of their patients kick the bottle for good. 5-0 out of 5 stars nutrition IS a major part of happy sobriety!
The prose style of this book is not necessarily my favorite, but the information contained within it is INDISPENSIBLE to understanding how and why so many people get "unhappy" or "depressed" in sobriety...we alcoholics have a different chemical makeup, and in the ways in which we are nutritionally deficient, or are unable to utilize nutrients, or need EXTRA nutrients, or the various maladies that are common to many of us which result in these negative emotional states:thyroid problems, hypoglycemia, candida albicans (yeast) infection, etc...we are all the same in so many different respects.Larson brings all these things together and gives great refences/bibliographies.She also heads up a treatment center which uses this information in the treatment of alcoholism. It is worth it's weight in gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Works.
I read this book ten and a half years ago and haven't had alcohol since.I drank heavily for twelve years and tried countless times over those years to cut back or quit altogether -- I tried counseling, AA, Antabuse, and every book on the shelves at the time; nothing worked. The approach in this book worked the first time. For most of the past decade, I rarely even think about alcohol.AA is NOT the only answer.Read this book.If it makes sense to you, try it.Some days still won't be easy but you may find you have a fighting chance for once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret of the 21st Century!
I drank for 30 years. Tried to quit for the last 10 years. This book works! What more can I say? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I know, I know, it's not all true .....
We all are more than aware that James Frey's books are not all based on his experiences but that doesn't change the fact that both "A Million Little Pieces" and "My Friend Leonard" are powerful stories. The characters are riveting, the story line is completely engrossing, and Frey's writing style adds so much to the story. "My Friend Leonard" was intense, funny, painful, and inspiring.I just finished it last night and would recommend it to anyone.I think that people/the media need to stop judging James Frey for taking creative license in his writing and just accept both books for what they are: very strong, readable stories that draw you in from page 1 and move you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, even if it is fiction...
I remember vaguely hearing about James Frey and the whole Oprah thing, which seemed a little ridiculous. But I was still curious about his book "A Million Little Pieces". So I bought the book and read it, I loved it. For me it was eye opening, everyday I work with criminals and drug addicts but I have never been one myself. As much as I want to help them, I don't understand what they have experienced. Mr.Frey's books have laid out a story of addiction and recovery that is butural, yet honest and accurate. "My Friend Leonard" is a touching story that nicely finshes off the saga that "A Million Little Pieces" begins. I would recommend them both to anyone, they are captivating and honest about the horrors of drug addiction. Even though parts of what Mr.Frey wrote are not true, you cannot deny good writing and a good story.

5-0 out of 5 stars that man can write...
regarless of the controversy over the fact that portions of this book, along with "a million little pieces" is fictional... there is one undeniable fact... james frey can write. i loved this book... i cried though over half of it... he easily sucks you into his life... you root an cheer for his relationships, mourn for his loss' an feel a sense of pride with every good decison he makes. this is a must read for everyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars your search forthe perfectbook on eating disorders is over!
Karen is spot on with this book. Well organized and well written, Karen gets right down to the point that anyone with a eating disorder can relate to. It's easy to refer back to over and over again and great to keep in your tote bag in case of the need for emergancy support. Though she makes the process of normal eating seem like a walk in the park, she reminds the reader that it takes time and effort. But everything she says makes so much sense.
