2-0 out of 5 stars A Word of Caution
This seems to be a good basic resource for the students exploring the world of DSM-IV-TR. It was published by the same house who publishes DSM etc., but look on page 4. Mental retardation is coded on Axis I! As of today I was unable to explain why, hence I assume it is a cardinal mistake/typo, which unfortunately cannot be tolerated in any diagnosis book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Even Go Near a Courtroom Without It!
This is the single most useful psych resource I've ever used, and I have a pretty extensive library. The explanations of some of the internal features of the MMPI-II were impressive andhelpful even to a Ph.D. psychologist with 30 years' clinical experience!Unless you have a graduate degree in psychology, this book is your best bet for mounting an effective challenge to bad, sloppy, or harmful psychological testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Usefulness in Forensic Psychology
I found this book to be highly readable, well indexed, and a valuable source for report writing and preparing court testimony. The research cited is current, validity and clinical scales well defined, and sources ofbias clearly stated. In addition, ethical considerations and pitfalls ofreliance on this testing instrument are provided.Excellent comparisons ofthe MMPI and MMPI-2 including modified, deleted, and new items.Extremelyvaluable for any psychologist going to court and explaining to a judge orjury to results and interpretations of this instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the pro per dad seeking equal custody
I was subjected to the MMPI and it's interpretations while attempting to maintain equal parenting time of my son. After my attorney ignored repeated requests for the results, I fired him, and have since representedmyself.Read more

This book was in great shape and is an excellent read for those who want to understand

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Look at Harlow's Research
This is one of the most interesting and well written books I've ever read on this or any similar topic. To anyone who studies or has studied attachment, Blum offers an amazing look at how this early research changed the face of psychology. To anyone who has read countless poorly written descriptions of boring research studies, this book is an oasis.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great topic, lousy subject
This is an extremely interesting book in terms of underlining how damaging scientific fads can be.The early twentieth century fad of data and cleanliness may well have led to the deaths many children as cleanliness was preferred over attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Update is in progress
To any who may read the review below about updating this volume, I would like to announce, as an author of this book, that the second edition is already in progress and will contain all of the new versions of the major cognitive batteries as well as the most current principles of cross-battery assessment. The new volume is not a simple revision but more an evolution of the approach. Although some of the information in the current volume is definitely outdated, the basic ideas, principles, and approach remains as viable today as before. According to Wiley's website, the book is due out in March of 2006.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date and out of use
The material this book was written on is considerably out of date and not useful to professionals at this time.I would hope the authors would update their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Teaching Assistant
I supervise and teach psychological assessment and use this book to help students learn how to integrate different psychological tests in their reports. The worksheets provide useful guidelines for integrating data.Overall this reference helps one create reports that are useful and appropriate for both teachers and parents, as well as physicians an therapists. Jerome Sattler's Assessment of Children books are probably the backbone of my work, but this little paperback is handy when a quick overview is all that's needed or I want to present material to individuals who do not have a theoretical background in assessment and psychometry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I read Kaufman's book in a graduate class on assessment and intelligence testing. I still refer to it whenever I have unusual test scores with a WISC-III. It explains in a comprehensive and clear manner how a competent psychologist should interpret the WISC-III. It is worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaufman does it again!
Nicely done! A good follow-up to his WISC-R book, this is an enjoyable, in-depth look at something most psychologists don't know enough about.

2-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive butjumbled
This is one of the landmark Measurement books for Psychologists. It does present a relatively comprehensive treatment of the issues facing researchers when developing measures.Unfortunately, the style of writing used in the book makes it exceedingly difficult for students to extract the useful information from the chapters.Specifically, the chapters are not particularly well organized - particularly the ones with fewer equations in them - often jumping back and forth between topics rather than presenting them more systematically.Furthermore, the prose explaning concepts and equations is basically written in an overly complex and sometimes cryptic style more appropriate for mathematicians and psychologists from the 1950's than for graduate students or modern consumers.I only bought the book to augment the graduate level measurement class that I teach and despite the fact that I have a solid background in mathematics, I grown inwardly every time I have to pick up a chapter in this book and read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars get the 2nd edition
I am in a management PhD program and we have to read this book for our required class in psychometric theory. I totally agree with one of the other reviewers that almost no term is clearly defined by Nunnally and Bernstein in this 3rd edition. The book goes on and on and on talking about validity, reliability, scaling, ... without defining any single term in a concise manner. It is very frustrating!
2-0 out of 5 stars The material may be good, but it's tough to get through
I'm in a Ph.D. program, and this is the required reading for our psychometric test.I was looking on the Border's web site to find a different book to read that would cover the same material, that would not be so difficult to understand.Nunally has a nasty habit of poorly defining terms, which makes it extremely difficult to grasp what he is talking about. It's challenging enough to understand psychometric theory, let alone with a practically illegible textbook! This book needs rewriting!I've given it two stars because supposedly the book contains a lot of valuable material.Of course, this doesn't matter one whit when you can't even read the darn thing!

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better books on the subject
The main disadvantage of the book is that it does not do what it actually "promises". In order to learn the technique of scoring and interpretation you are constantly referred to Exner's books. Without any of his books on the comprehensive system the book is useless ;-( So it may be a better idea to get the "real thing" (i.e. Exner's handbooks or the workbook).
4-0 out of 5 stars A useful tertiary reference
In my experience, all of the "Essentials" series books are useful to a greater or lesser degree. I routinely write psychological testing reports, and have a stack of reference books nearby for quick perusal. This is NOT a book that should be used by students or professionals to comprehensively score and interpret a Rorschach; the Exner workbook is needed for that. However, this book has an excellently compiled index that allows the evaluator to quickly look up research and normative data on specific variables that stand out in a record.

3-0 out of 5 stars Look at other books before buying this one
I bought this book to assist me in learning the Rorshach in a projective assessment class. The book is easy to read, and it certainly provides the reader with eye catching information boxes that help to make sense out of complicated material. However, there are some problems. First, the book is out of date: it does not refer to current research or Exner's newest comprehensive edition. An update of this book might take care of this problem. Second, at times material that could be more comprehensively laid out for the reader is neglected. This concern would require the authors to re-write sections that are overly simplified. ... Whether you are a graduate student, intern, novice clinician,or a veteran, you know from experience that the DSM-IV-TR is a beast of a book in terms of navigation.
5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource in learning the DSM-IV-TR
I bought this book as a study aid to assist me in preparing for my counseling licensure exam.I own the DSM-IV-TR but found that it was difficult for me to learn with it because it was so technical. The study guide breaks the diagnoses down into simpler descriptions, gives case examples of clients with the various disorders, and provides study questions to help you evaluate your progress in learning. It goes over important definitions, key diagnostic points and how to make a differential diagnosis.Since using this to study, my confidence in making a diagnosis has increased greatly.I highly recommend this book to any clinician or graduate student. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Rather dull, but easy to read
This textbook is not the most thrilling read of a lifetime, but its also not difficult.Somestimes the organization is a little odd, but it could be worse.
3-0 out of 5 stars Refers to 6th edition, copyright 2002
A solid revision of a very useful textbook and clinical practice resource. Numerous typographical and typesetting errors will annoy those who expect more from the publishers of this social work classic, who appear to have rushed publication.Infotrac has only marginal value to working professionals and no value for enrolled students with library access.Wait for the second printing or stick with the 5th edition if you can.
