The only textbook I've ever enjoyed
I'm a first-semester MSW student.I don't have a background in social work or the social sciences, so I may be way off when I say that this is the most informative textbook that I've ever read.(Mind you, I'd stil rather be reading something by Howard Zinn or Jared Diamind.)Every page teaches me something new.If it has organizational problems, I haven't noticed, because reading it is so engrossing.

Very poor text book
I'm in a MSW program and this text book was part of the reading material. For a text book, its poorly written. The book jumps from topic to topic and does not have a clear flow from one subject to anouther. Items are misplaced and the information is difficult to find. Many critical typos
This book is not for people who do not understand statistics because there are typos in the book on important things such as definitions, answers to stats formulas, and in addition, the associated on-line grading chapter questions. Page 39 is just one example. The explanation of a Z-score has a typo. Below that, the example formula of a T-score is incorrect. Trying to figure this stuff out has been beyond frustrating. I do not recommend this book until they fix the published errors.
Drummond's textbook
Students whose field of studies will take them into research and/or testing procedures should consider this book. It covers the historical and philosophical foundationsof testing, the ethical issues involved, and goes into great detail on all the statistical aspects of appraisal. Parts of it are over my head but this is due to my poor math background rather than the author's style and content.

Easy to Understand Text on Appraisal
I purchased a copy of Appraisal Procedures for Counselors and Helping Professionals by Robert J. Drummond in order to review for the National Counselor Exam.It had been a number of years since I had taken a class in appraisal and I felt that I needed to brush up on the terms and basic principles.I found this book to be very helpful.The material is presented in an easy to understand format.I was worried about the appraisal section on the NCE.After reviewing this book, I felt much more confidnet about being successful on the appraisal section of the test.I recently took the NCE and passed.And, I actually did ok on the appraisal questions.I would recommend this book as an excellent review. ... Gold Standard
I used this book in grad school--it is the gold standard in MMPI coverage, clinical uses, etc.

Excellent resource for MMPI-2'ers.
I have used this text for my graduate class I teach on the MMPI-2.It isan excellent text. Very comprehensive.My graduate students found it veryhelpful in learning to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of theMMPI-2.Awareness of any tests strengths/limitations is crucial to theappropriate use of all psychological tests.Learning to appropriatelyutilize this test as part of a psychological screening or battery iscritical for the training of all clinical psychologists.Graham does anexcellent job of presenting the information in a readable andunderstandable format.

Valid Scientific Writing - misses detailed "How To" answers
After being disappointed by Cary Cherniss' book on "promoting" emotional intelligence, I was rather reluctant to spend money on this one, so I ordered a used copy through Amazon (very satisfactory: the copy I got was as good as new).I must say that I find my money well spent.In fact, the only reason why this book doesn't get 5 stars is that it's too scientific for practical application.Read more

quite a few typos
While the information in this book is interesting, complete, and useful, the frequent typos are very distracting.
Handy Neuropsychological Reference
As a practicing neuropsychologist, I purchased this text with a view to having a small, portable reference book to take with me when assessing clients in locations away from my desk. Second Edition
This edition is similar to the previous one. It is without peer in terms of scholarship. It is also not easy to read and digest, and that's the way it should be for a serious treatment of research methods. After all, the applications of such methods and the interpretation of results can profoundly affect our lives.

A good book but a terrible textbook
Without any doubt, this is a comprehensive book in this field.However, because the authors tried to demonstrate their superior english writting abilities, they made the whole text hard to understand for students.Frommy point of view, as a new professor, I don't believe that recommendingthis book is appropriate.

Fabulous book
This is a practitioner's book, not a scolar's. I'm not a scolar -- never have been and never will be.I love this book.It's lucid, it's sensible and it's great statistics.It goes thoroughly into the logic of linearmodel ANOVAs yet the bulk of the exposition is in the simple Englishlanguage -- it has no calculus and no eigenvectors and almost no matrixalgebra. You need an acquaintance with elementary one-way ANOVA but no morebackground than that. The authors pace it carefully and are not afraid of abit of repetition for the sake of clarity (something I always appreciatewhen I'm reading new technical material).It's one of the best $105dollars I've ever spent. Well written and easy reading
I'm currently in school for addiction counseling and felt this book would be good to read. It is well written and easy to read, with a lot of good advice. As a counselor in preparation I know I will be having sessions with people who are experiencing suicidal ideation, & while I know this doesn't qualify a person to do suicide assessments it certainly gives a good method for drawing out as much information as possible. It makes me feel a little more comfortable about the job I am going to be doing.

Seminal Text of Suicide Assessment
There are many books on suicidology and even on clinical interviewing, but none combine the two topics in such an effective and practical manner. A REAL "Must-Read" for All Clinicians
Shawn Shea's The Practical Art of Suicide Assessment: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals and Substance Abuse Counselors is one of the most valuable professional texts I have read in the past decade. The bookcombines scholarship, practical guidelines and a literary quality thatrenders it a truly exceptional book in the field.I found the caseexamples used to illustrate clinical problems invaluable; these vignettesbring the theoretical material "alive" in a way that encouragesclinicians from various disciplines and theoretical orientations tomeaningfully incorporate the concepts.Shea elucidates such criticalissues as risk factors and risk predictors in such a way as to makeconstructs that are often reifed once again meaningful.As part of myprofessional responsibilities, I am responsible for training/teachingmental health emergency clinicians aspects of clinical interviewing andsuicide assessment.I have incorporated many of the principles in thisbook into these trainings. The CASE approach to suicidal assessment isperhaps the best approach to this complex task that I have found. Sorry i don't like to crack my SAT's, i like to ACE them.
Cracking the NEW SAT, 2006 edition written by the princeton review, is an excellent standard approach to the SAT. The stratagies included in this book are promised to raise your score. But this book lacks review, especially on the math section. another positive part of this book is it's practice exams, which are very similar to the real SAT's. the reason i don't reccommend this book is because of it's practice questions. you recieve great stratagies but not enough practice questions to reinforce the skills you learned so you just sit there dum founded. no explanations are provided for the practice drills, so you don't know what your doing wrong and where you're going wrong with the skills you've just learned. Instead of using this book for the SAt it would be better advisable to ust it for the PSAT. if you are really serious about acing the SAT's and want to invest some money in to it. I would reccommend buying McGraw-Hill's SAT I 2nd edition. this book provides great stratagies and practice to reinforce the skills and provides excellent practice test. another book you might want to consider buying is Gruber's New SAt this book provides tough questions but it put's you in the right state of mind for the SAT. after you are done with these two books. you might consider buying Barron's SAT 2400 because after your done with the standard approach with these books. Barron's 2400 will put you up to the test. This is what happened after i used these books. my current score: 600 critical reading, 720 math, and 550 writing. for a total of 1870. but after using these book i recived 670 critical reading 800 math, and 690 writing for a total of 2160, trust me these are all the books you need trust me! good luck!

Get the newer edition, though not much has changed
Please note that there is a newer version of this book available: Cracking the SAT, 2007 edition. Not much has changed between these two editions, but its probably best to have the newer edition, if you have the option of purchasing either edition.
Not perfect - but it gets results
I purchased the Princeton Review book, "Cracking the NEW SAT" after completing my PSATs in October or November.My PSAT scores came back as around 650-720 per section; certainly not bad, but I wasn't comfortable with the real SAT.
