2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, again and again...
I am a clinical psychology graduate student, and every time I turn to this book for help related to interpretation--what a part of the test means or can tell us about a person--I am sorely disappointed. It is terribly psychometric and formal, giving facts about the test but few clues for what to do with it; even something as simple as a useful description of one of the index scores is lacking. There are reference tables included, but I have found even those more difficult to locate when I need them than seems necessary.Frustrating...

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and user-friendly yet sophisticated
This is a gem of a book. I assigned it for the grad students in my intellectual assessment course and both they and I found it to be very helpful and easy to use. The format of the book makes it very user-friendly and unintimidating. There are a lot of boxes and highlighted text that help the reader to find what he or she is looking for quickly. This book covers administration, scoring, and interpretation and provides numerous helpful tips for beginners on common errors. The approach to interpretation provided in this book is a pared-down and slightly modified version of the method described in Kaufman's book Intelligent Testing with the WISC-III (an excellent book with a great deal of information on interpreting the WISC-III). Kaufman and Lichtenberger take the guess work and estimation out of interpreting the significance of various scores. This approach is based in the scientific method (assume nonsignificance unless you have a compelling reason, based on the test data, to believe that the variations in scores on the test protocol are unlikely to have resulted by chance). This approach is very helpful in giving students an understanding of how much variation in test scores can result from test error, and brings the "science" back into test interpretation. There are a lot of numbers to crunch using this method, and in some ways the clarity of the system can encourage users to become mechanistic, but I feel that the emphasis on systematic and defensible interpretation is well worth this risk. Kaufman's approach has become the basis of the standard described in the WAIS manual and calculated on the WAIS-III record form, and this book is an excellent way to learn it and the rationale behind it. The book is also an excellent reference for practitioners. I find myself pulling it off my shelf very frequently as I supervise student assessments, and it's loaned out to various students a lot of the time. The book provides pages of useful tables, some of which are in the WAIS-III manual, but many of which are not. One caution is that the shared abilities tables provided here are based on theory rather than data, so it's important to take these with a grain of salt. Also there are a couple of points in the "decision tree" where it's not entirely clear in some situations what the reader is to do. This is not a common problem, but one that is not really adequately addressed in my opinion.5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I am a graduate student in psychology and this is the clearest text I have ever read that describes the interpretive process of IQ tests! Look for their new book for WISC interpretation as well! ... Read more

Editorial Review

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator temperament test is given annually to millions of people, mainly business students and job applicants. But what good does it do, short of giving you a catchy-sounding, four-letter abbreviation (ENTJ, ISFP) that you can sometimes use to break the ice at cocktail parties? The aim of this book is to help you apply your knowledge to the benefit of both your work and love life--and to teach you how to prevent personality clashes by slightly adjusting your behavior around others, once you ascertain which "type" they fall under.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
If you have read Personality Types then this book is even better. It actually shows you who you are by a series of questions. I remember because it showed me I was wrong about my own self (after just reading Personality Types)! 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, difficult to understand.
I am a graduate student in psychology, and this is the WORST textbook I have ever used.It is poorly written, confusing, and doesn't define clearly even the most simple concepts it is trying to explain.I have to go online to look up definitions and concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Find another text if you can
I am a graduate student, half-way through my program and this is not a good introduction to the subject of Psych Testing. The wording is vague, the text skips around so much that finding answers to even simple questions requires extensive hunting. It is unnecessarily difficult to understand. Our professor says it will be a good reference book down the road, but I intend to sell it the minute I've completed the course and then go on to find another book so that I can get a better handle on the subject

3-0 out of 5 stars Psychological Study guide for YOU!
Anastasi's orignal textbook is a difficult text book for any graduate student.Ms Urbina simplifies and gives examples of typical exam questions. It reviews the nature of psychological tests, statisticalconcepts in reliability, validity, item analysis, ability testing, personality testing, and finally a good section on the application oftesting.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother with other brands of PSAT guides
I orginally bought The Kaplan and Princeton Review guides together this summer. Until about three weeks before the test the only book i had gone through of the two was the Princeton Review, which i had completed while watching TV one night. It had some ideas, but truely it wasn't anything i couldn't have figured out myself. When i took a practice test at school one day, i did really poorly, had trouble with the Read Comphresnion questions, i couldn't finish that many math problems, and overall struggling. So i went home and found this book, the point of the wookbook is to help you get a better score. It taught me how to break down the two article read comphernsions. Everything in this book is useful, even the english section which i was already confident in. There is alot of coverage on all sections, so it's really up to you if you need more work some sections than others. Also another quality i like is there are practice problems in the lessons, so you don't have to pull out a pratice test and check the answers after each chapter. Seriously if your looking for a PSAT guide there isn't anything better than Kaplan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars MMPI-2 at a glance
While I am not a big fan of the MMPI2, if you must use it and write reports on it, this book will help you out immensely.
5-0 out of 5 stars The portable MMPI-2 handbook
I have an entire shelf of MMPI/MMPI-2 books. While I can't give up my Roger Greene volume, nor Caldwell, Butcher, and others, this little book wins the prize for practicality.Dr. Nichols has integrated manifestations of psychopathology and real world behaviors that are commonly seen in various MMPI-2 score elevations or depressions at a level that exceeds that of other available handbooks. This is not just a book for the beginning student -- while it will give novices a real jump start, it is a book which advanced practitioners including forensic psychologists will find exceptionally useful. This book is worth every penny and then some.I only wish that Wiley would put this book into e-book format so that I could have it in my computer for ready access wherever I go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Helpful Advice for Beginners & Advanced MMPI-2 Use
David Nichols provides detailed, easy-to-understand guidance for assessing psychopathology and personality using the MMPI-2. As a graduate student in clinical psychology, I found this book extremely helpful in evaluating MMPI-2 profiles. The book we are using in my Assessment of Personality course - Newmarks' Major Psychological Assessment Instruments, was simply too dry and academic. I purchased Essentials to help me understand the powerful MMPI-2.It worked! In class, when called upon to provide my own assessment of MMPI-2 profiles, I was able to quickly make sound judgments.Other students were amazed. In fact, the professor asked: "How did you know that?" When I shared I was using Nichols' book, he exclaimed; "That explains it. That book is excellent."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Suits my personality to a tee
Diana Fosha has her own notion of healing with the power of full engagement, while the terapist "industry" has revelled in its aloofness and detatchment. To borrow a phrase 'You go girl'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich In Ideas, Passionate, and Clinically Innovative
Dr. Fosha has given us the gift of an important book, which combines easy access (fine writing), leading edge concepts in relational psychology and Intensive Psychotherapy, and the most helpful texts of clinical psychotherapy examples I have ever encountered. In fact, her running commentary (pithy and informal) on video transcripts from her own treatment is the perfect voice to accompany her chapter-long (and very helpful) illustrations of how the theoretical material on attachment and emotion-affect apply in real-life psychotherapy consultions and treatment. There are also some marvelous literary quotations sprinkled around, and solid recognition of the pathfinders ahead of her, from Darwin to Davenloo.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important contribution
In this most important work Dr Fosha describes in clear prose and with engaging case material an emerging trend in the practice of effective short term psychotherapy. Her understanding and honoring of the internal landscape of the patients subjective experience and affect regulation will be an inspiration to new clinicians and a source of wisdom to seasoned veterans. Theory is presented in a clear accessible manner free of fluff and is enhanced by her lyrical narrative style. Read more

Fischer and Corcoran complete another Herculean task with their 3rd edition of MEASURES FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE Volumes I and II. These issues include scoring, sampling, reliability and validity. Of course, they include the citations of their sources. 4-0 out of 5 stars The bureaucratic corporate machine called "help"

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist !
Thanks to Sue Baron, the pediatric neuropsychologist finaly have the equivalent of the Lezak for adult neuropsychology. This book is in the top list of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and you will understand why when you will read it ! The heart of the book is the description of almost all the tests available in the field of pediatric neuropsychology. The descriptions cover the statistic properties and the main studies available on the principle tests. Each chapter that presents a function starts with a state of the art at a Phd level. It really saved me hours of reading in many books ! Included are also numerous norms (mostly americans)with unpublished ones. The references included are of a great interrest too. The chapter on report wrinting is also essential. To be perfect one would expect a chapter on achievement tests and due to its publication date the WISC IV and the WPPSI III are not included. Apart from this there is simply no criticism to formulate. In a short way I strongly recommand this book and would be very surprised to find any disappointed reader !

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Spreen & Strauss for child neuropsychologists!
