3-0 out of 5 stars Worth a look
First I must say that I am not a fan of Dr. Phil so I know very little of this author's reputation. (I not an 'anti-fan' of Dr. Phil either, just not big on TV)
4-0 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one
I think that this book is a good teaching tool for all these parents who want to prepare their children to score high in the IQ test. But when you think of that carefully, doesn't this defeat the idea of your intelligence being measurable by IQ tests? If you can improve the score by preparing yourself to the test that means that the test does not really measure your intelligence, but only your ability to score high on the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of the IB, its increasing introduction in American school systems, and how it makes a difference
Jay Mathews & Ian Hill's Supertest: How The International Baccalaureate Can Strengthen Our Schools deftly assesses the statistics about the Baccalaureate, including its impact on student chances for success in college and life. Chapters provide a history of the IB, its increasing introduction in American school systems, and how it makes a difference in the transition to college. Sounds like dry reading: but the concurrent story of one American high school that adopted the IB adds a personal flavor and human interest touch to the statistics and discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your kids deserve IB - learn what it is and why from Jay
"Washington Post" reporter Jay Mathews extends his appreciation of challenge in our high schools by identifying the grandest and most challenging of them all:the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.Jay created "Newsweek" magazine's Challenge Index, and his writing is always approachable and easy to follow. This book maintains that special style. He writes here very specifically about a local DC-area high school and its experiences with beginning and maintaining the rigorous IB curriculum. You come to really care about the students and teachers he profiles, and to share their trials and successes and occasional failures with them. The book features an extremely effective method of integrating chapters about the creation and operation of the IB program as a whole - written by a co-author from the IB Organization - with chapters about Fairfax County, VA's Mount Vernon High School and the people involved with getting IB up and running there. And of the battles in Fairfax County and elsewhere about IB and its rival, the Advanced Placement (AP) program. In my mind there is no contest - IB is far and away the better program, especially for exposing kids to what college will be like. And there is no better predictor of success in college (i.e., graduating) than having taken at least one rigorous course in high school, especially one from IB which teaches how to think and plan and lean. But read Jay's book and decide for yourself. He does an excellent job of iterating the AP proponents concerns about IB, some legitimate - most not, and of exposing as fools or frauds a few of the opponents and their methods for keeping this excellent program out of their schools. They won, but did their kids a real disservice with their victory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Condensed, but not lost.
I actually use this version more than the big DSM IV TR because it is quicker to find things in.It is still a large book (over 900 pages), so it may not be a true pocket guide, but there is that version available also. However, if you do this everyday, this version can still fit in a pocket, and has all the ICD-9 codes for the pesky billing folks. Students could have this with them to learn at bedside the information they need to know for shelf and board exams.Resident psychiatrists, this should always be in you desk ready to go.Invest in this, 30 bucks well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The quick guide that a therapist or Psychiatrist needs
The full DSM-IV is the bible that modern Psychiatry is based around. The book is actually sprisingly a fair read and not to difficult to navigate. But, it is fairly large (943 pages). So how do you remedy this if you need the reference, you get the quick guide. It is perfect as a quick reference for the diagnositc criteria, as well as the ICD-9 codes for billing. This is perfect as well for Medical students to carry around in the pocket and quickly read criteria about their patient's diagnosis and rattle off quickly to their attending, scoring brownie points. They make this spiral bound edition, which is excellent because it holds up better than the bound edition, just for the fact that you will flip through this book a thousand times a day, especially if you are a student. So this is a great companion to the DSV-IV TR, and don't forget the conscise Kaplan and Saddock 10th edition as reference as well.

This is a brilliant book. A must have for anyone doing psychometric testing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best thing going
this book is the seminal work in the field, in my opinion. the book is very comprehensive and well-organized, and you don't have to be a neuropsychologist to understand or use it. it is a great reference for therapists and patients alike who are looking for an increased understanding of brain function and behavior. of course, it is also an excellent resource on conducting neuropsychological testing and can help practitioners of all sorts make a more educated guess regarding the need for assessment/referral.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lezak's Neuropsychological Assessment

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I am a Ph.D candidate, and I was looking for some help in one my Psychological Assessment classes.I did not find any help in this book. This book is written for the layperson, and may be a source of basic information on current psychological tests. However, for the professional looking for additional information it is disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars the gold standard
This text has quickly become the gold standard for both students and practitioners of psychological assessment. It is unique in that it is extremely practical and applicable to day to day practice, yet it is thoroughly grounded in research--which is succinctly cited throughout the text. And, somehow, each volume gets better. This is not a book that will collect dust on a shelf--clinicians will find sage guidance in this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A positive, worthwhile, and encouraging model for a vital question
-The authors helped found the Positive Psychology movement, which hopes to supplement psychology's current medical model ("find what's wrong, then fix it") with a model for positive health ("find what's right, then encourage it").Psychological health, which is not just an absence of disease, includes such things as character preparation, improved baseline happiness, realistic optimism, wisdom, and cognitive sophistication. The authors consider character and virtue indispensible for cultivating a good and positive life, and this book pioneers a method for classifying and evaluating them both.

This is a terrific book -- it provides a lot of information on how to administer and score the WISC-IV.It has the same innovative approaches Kaufman has used in previous books on earlier Wechsler tests -- new ideas on interpretation and scoring that make sense. 4-0 out of 5 stars learning SPSS and statistics
Pallant manages to explain fairly advanced statistical concepts like multiple regression, analysis of covariance, factor analysis and others, using SPSS. You don't have to be a stats major to be able to gainfully master SPSS. It does the computational heavy lifting. The point of this book is to learn the broad meaning of these concepts and how to interpret the results SPSS returns.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!!!! But the 1 year SPSS license ......
This book is a "must have" introduction to SPSS. Brilliant & Highly Recommended.(The 1-year only SPSS Student version license is a bummer ... many students do statistical research that takes longer than 1 year to complete.) Perhaps the next edition will carry a 3-year SPSS license?

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very helpful SPSS book
I bought this book based on a recommendation from my advisor. It is a great way for SPSS users to find out how to go about conducting the analysis that they need to do.The help function in SPSS is not terribly helpful, and the manual that can be purchased for a lot of extra money is so large and combersome that it is also not much help. This book makes SPSS much easier to use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Of Little Substance
I bought this book thinking that the author would go through some cases, explaining how she does psychotherapy. Not exactly. This book is more of a survey of psychotherapy--basically telling you everything you pretty much already know about it.What's even more frustrating is that not only is it a waste of a book, it's a waste of money. Very frustrating. (I'm surprised too because everyone else gave it such high reviews....I'm not sure what they were smoking...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Access into the literature
I think the most important use of this book and the others that Nancy Mcwilliams has written is the access they provide into the literature. The books she recommends and references (I've collected a few) are important for an understanding of modern psychoanalysis and (I think) human psychology. I would thoroughly recommendall of Nancy Mcwilliams' introductory text books on psychoanalytic psychotherapy for this reason. Also, Nancy Mcwilliams brings apostmodernist understanding (which seems ironically modern to me) to the study of psychoanalysis. I wouldn't know how to approach a complex tradition like psychoanalysis without such an approach. The personality theories handed down to us by previous generations frequently don't seem to fit together logically -- but they do seem to make sense phenomenologically -- they apply differently to differnt kinds of people. Psychoanaylsis is an important tradition and Nancy Mcwilliams demonstrates this in all of her books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our class loved this book!
Tonight as we handed in our "take home final exams" for a Psychoanalytic Theory and Therapy class we all agreed that this book (a required text) was a good read. The author shared her experiences as a therapist in such a practical way, and gave us a taste of how to approach psychotherapy from a psychoanalytic perspective. Due to limited time this semester, I skimmed through a couple of the chapters (don't tell the prof)and actually look forward, during Christmas break, to more carefully reading each chapter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally: An overview of important validity research
The Rorschach, and also the Comprehensive System (RCS), has been inadvertently criticised - continuosly - although the research associated with the reliability and validity of the method has increadingly accumulated during the years - and in particular in the late 90's. However, as Kubiszyn (?) et al. recently have written, this research is not all that easily found, nor is it for the ordinary clinician particularly easy to read and understand, part of it being so complex and statistically advanced. Therefore, this book - published by Wiley in 2003 - is so important. It not only gives the development and structure of the RCS, nor the strategy of cluster analysis, but the book contains hundreds of well conducted bot reliability and in particular validity studies, aggregated in proper places where the different variables and ratios are described - and this is an immense improvement as compare to the 1993 (3rd) edition. I, who am the person primarily responsible for convincing people in Finland of how well the RCS functions - as well as teaching psychologists to mastery - am extremely grateful for all the additional and well organized research published here. When I wrote a about 20 pages review of reliability and validity for the Yearbook Rorschachiana 2003 this would have bene an assed to have - now I am primarily using it in an RCS educational program (165 lectures)in Finland. I am also producing an excerpt of probably some 50-60 singlespaced pages in Finnish regarding in particular the most important peaces of scientific work, confirming the reliability and validity reseacrh related to the RCS!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Updated Classic
As a clinical psychologist who uses the Rorschach regularly and teaches it to graduate students, I have always relied upon this volume as a bible of sorts for all-things-Rorschach. The newest edition is a wonderful updating of the classic. Despite being about the same number of pages as the last edition, this volume packs much more information in, and is written in a more concise and relevant way. Exner has updated some of the historical lore regarding Hermann and the roots of his test, as well as incorporating a full chapter on controversies surrounding the Rorschach. Furthermore, the interpretive section is modeled after the format of the very useful Primer on Rorschach Interpretation, and incorporates all of the recent changes and innovations in the Comprehensive System. This volume could easily be the "one stop shop" for Rorschachers, as it has normative data, administration and scoring guidelines, and a well-organized interpretive section. Who could ask for more? ... Read more

This book is not one you would ordinarily read cover-to-cover, but it is a must have for anyone who is using the MMPI.Greene is a MMPI genius and he knows the MMPI like no one else.I'm using his book more as a reference, and I'm using other books such as Butcher's to actually learn the MMPI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exelent book
This is the best book I have read regarding the MMPI-2. It gives in depth coverage of almost all known scales available for the MMPI-2, and has all you need to learn to use the test. Codetypes are well explained, and presented in a systematic fashion. There are lots of infomration about codetypes which are useful in the case of juding the deegre to which the patient fits the particular codetype description. The book also includes several validityscales which are very usable to attain an in depth understanding of the response pattern of the test subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good in some aspects but yet very bad in others
First off, this book offers one of the most wide ranged practice tests available for the SAT. This extensive amount of practice allows for a user to sufficiently prepare for the SAT; however, what makes this book so bad is that most of the tests that are given are hold KAPLAN tests. If u have bought 2005 or 2006 SAT Books from KAPLAN ud find the exact same problems and tests. Although most of the tests are the ame, the overall review for english and math is by far one of the best out there next to Princeton Review and Barrons. I recommend this book if u have never purchased a KAPLAN SAT book before or just 1, but if you have purchased a recent SAT book by KAPLAN i would ABSOLUTELY not recommend this book unless you want some of the same practice tests ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations and Strategies
This manual is extremely useful when preparing for PPTs and when you are writing reports.I have found the new forms very useful.I would recommend this manual for every special education teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars A bargain at twice the price
This is a very powerful reference that can be a helpful tool for school psychologists and private practice clinicians.Mather and Jaffe divide this book into four helpful sections. The first has much to do with the Woodcock Johnson-III tests of cognitive abilities and academic achievement. They provide guidelines for assessment interpretation, including hypotheses of origins for varied subtest combinations. The second section of the book provides the reader with samples of varied examples of comprehensive psychological reports. These can help provide guidelines for report writing that includes (but is not limited to) the Woodcock Johnson-III.
5-0 out of 5 stars Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, & Strategies
Woodcock-Johnson III: Reports, Recommendations, and Strategies (Nancy Mather & Lynne Jaffe, New York: Wiley, 2002) is an essential resource, not only for evaluators who use the Woodcock-Johnson III and teachers who use the results of Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III) assessments, but also for anyone involved in educational evaluation or planning individual educational programs. 3-0 out of 5 stars A necessary evil
Unfortunately, I found the book a necessary evil.It was a required text for my Master's program tests and measurements course, otherwise, I would have never bought and read it.It does cover a lot of material, and I did receive a good understanding of what psychological testing and assessment is all about. But the style!..It sometimes took me 4-5 attempts to read a passage and make sense out of it.Some chapters (like a Statistical Refresher) felt like the authors made their very best to make sure the readers won't understand a word. With a few exceptions of entertaining examples, the book is boring and is written in a very difficult language.
1-0 out of 5 stars a widely-used but poorly-written textbook
This textbook covers a lot of material, but in an unsystematic way: the definitions are not worded in a predictable and consistent manner, the more important issues are not given priority over the less important ones, but everything is simply thrown together into an indigestible and boring glob. ...
