4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Historical Perspective
Essential Papers share anecdotal stories of unique characters and their circumstances, but then some of the writers try to globalize their "findings" to the general population as reasons for self destructive behavior.Since the papers were written in the early 20th century, heavy weight is given to Sigmund Freud's and Karl Menninger's theories. The papers do provide an insight into the "pop-psychology" of the past, and give the reader a better understanding on how far the field of psychiatry has come over the past 100 years. The book's finale is a crown jewel written by Edwin Shneidman, "Suicide as Psychache" wherein the three components of prevention arise: reduce the pain, provide a truncated time for endurance, and offer coping resources. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quiet destruction
Drs. Poussaint and Alexander poises thought provoking questions on the rise of African American suicides especially among young males. The authors states, if African Americans endured over three centuries of slavery and Jim Cow laws without succumbing to hopelessness and self negation, why is their a surge in suicides today? Is crime and poverty, (the catalysts of hopelessness) contributing to the demise of young African American males? Is the participation of young African Americans in drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sex, a form suicide, related to unfulled dreams and a feeling of hoplessness? The authors set out to answer these questions in the context of the pervasiveness of racism, which greatly contributes to a "mental health crisis" which is tightening its grip among young African Americans. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great research and explanations
One in Thirteen is a great mix between solid (and often scary) statistics and the voices of troubled teens, who often give their own opinions on what could be done to help them. I highly recommend it for anyone trying to find some of the root causes of the third highest killer in the nation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every parent and counselor should read this book
This issues presented in this book -- feelings of isolation, anger and confusion among teens that too often result in suicides or attempted suicides -- are of the utmost importance in being able to effectively deal with teen depression, violence and suicide. Parents and counselors will find the statistics and anecdotes eye-opening. I only have a couple of quibbles: I wish the book had taken one chapter to talk about specific things individuals could do to combat teen suicide. Also, there were a few spelling and grammar errors. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful to a suicidal person
I picked up this book at a time when I was struggling and found it very unhelpful. I strongly feel that Wilkerson himself has never really been in a situation where he himself contemplated suicide. If he had, he might have approached the issue with more compassion and understanding. The book is very condemming and a person already feeling suicidal would probably only be convinced that they are a terrible person for feeling suicidal. It was very heavy-handed in its religious approach, even browbeating.I am religious myself, but I found the constant, hit-you-over-the-head style of Christian thought offputting. This book doesn't really provide insights into a person's condition, and I found it unhelpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suicide - David Wilkerson
I read this book when I was sixteen years old. I checked it out from theschool library in the Nebraska High School I attended. I was doing a reportfor a class and decided 'suicide' was what I wanted to do the report about.I was at a point in my life where life made no sense to me and I waswilling to blame it on anyone. I picked this book up and read it from frontto back. I avowed at the end of the book that suicide would never be a partof my life as long as I had one good friend in my life. This book showed methat Jesus would always be that one good friend. And therefore I couldnever consider suicide. Recently a friend of ours told us that his wife hadtried to commit suicide. I gave them my book. And now can no longerpurchase one to replace it. I wish I could pass one out to all the people Iknow that feel so desperate that it could be the only answer for them. GodBless David Wilkerson and the good works he has knowingly and unknowinglyaccomplished through the words of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent biblical study of the subject of suicide
This is an extremely insightful book into the mind of suicide- prone individuals. It also gives thecure for these tendencies by examining exerpts from the Bible, and applying them to the problems which potentialsuicide victims face.It is NOT just another "don't worry-behappy" book. It acknowledges the heartfelt and often legitimate painwhich these people feel, and offers actual(Bible-based)methods by which toovercome the suicidal urge.Highly reccommended to everyone, even if you aremerely "down-in-the-dumps", and not suicidal. Also reccommended is"Have You Felt Like Giving Up Lately?", also by David Wilkerson. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh approach to an everpresent problem
As a graduate student in a counseling program, I found this book to be a great read.Nylund does a great job of explaining his SMART approach to working with children labeled ADHD.While I do agree that ADHD is a real problem for some children, I do feel that too many children are diagnosed with this disorder, resulting in the overdiagnosis and labeling of children at very young ages. With this overdiagnosis comes over-medication of children as well.I think that Nylund's approach offers an alternative for those children and their families who may wish to to tackle ADHD from a different perspective by focusing on the strengths of the child and family instead of treating the ADHD from the deficit model.Great book!I plan to utilize this approach in my work as a counselor.

1-0 out of 5 stars A foolish take on an important topic
Why Nylund would choose to classify Huck Finn as ADD/ADHD is odd.Did he take other factors into account, such as Huck's physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic father, who is a criminal and often absent?Or the fact that he comes from a single-parent, broken home (having lost his mother at a very young age)?1-0 out of 5 stars ADD is REAL. I know. I have it.
ADD is a real condition. How do I know? Because I have it. And while I do not take Ritalin, (There are so many other medications out there to treat my condition it's sad he only mentions one of them) I know all to well what life is like when I miss a day of my medication. NOTHING gets done. My parents (I'm 17) grow frustrated when they find me spaced out and staring at the walls instead of folding the towels, which they had watched me start some three hours ago. 5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal and scholarly introduction to the sensitive subject of suicide
Cognition And Suicide: Theory, Research, And Therapy compiled, organized, and edited by Thomas E. Ellis (Professor of Psychology, Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia) is a seminal and scholarly introduction to the sensitive subject of suicide and brings together under one cover contributions by leading cognitivists and suicide specialists based on cutting edge research in the field and in academia. Beginning with an historical overview of the subject, contributors go on to survey diverse theoretical systems, the cognitive aspects of suicide, and a range of special topics including developmental influences, schizophrenia, trauma, and suicide risk. Concluding with an epilogue (What Have We Learned About Cognition and Suicide and What More Do We Need to Know?), Cognition And Suicide is an invaluable addition to personal, professional, departmental, and academic reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

1-0 out of 5 stars Singing the same old tune
This book is little more than an embarassing catharsis from an author for whom no amount of privileged education succeeded in helping him to grow up. It surely reaffirms my own conviction that mental health professionals should continue in the direction of treating their work more as science and less as the virtually worthless "sympathetic listening" currently being peddaled as "social work."
5-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read that leaves you still groping for answers
Songs from the Black Chair was awesome. Admittedly, it was more about the author's own struggles than about any of the people he has helped, but that's not a criticism... it is noted simply because the title, which suggests that the book will be about his patients, is misleading.
2-0 out of 5 stars More self-indulgence from the me generation
Does anyone really need to read more fatuous cries for attention like this? The song being sung here is "Oh, please, I have troubles, pay attention tome." Then the discordant refrain kicks in: "I'm so helpless, buy my book so I can I tell you how helpless I am, and I'll tell you about all the other people who can't cope."

5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Disorder - A Terminal Illness
Jonathan Aurthur has written a masterpiece on Mental Illness. His in-depth understanding of Mental Illness comes from his experiencing it and living with it everyday of his life for five years with his beautiful son Charley.Jonathan takes the reader on a journey through this ordeal with such candor and wit, that the reader feels sadness when the book ends.5-0 out of 5 stars Heart-breaking and mind-provoking
For anyone with a loved one or good friend who has suffered from mental illness, The Angel and the Dragon is a fascinating but difficult read. Jonathan Aurthur's tale of his son's mental illness and suicide is heart-breaking. His research into the mental health profession/industry is, at once, a revelation and revulsion. The reader cannot escape Aurthur's pain and frustation as he attempts to help guide his son through difficult psychotic episodes. That frustation becomes compounded as Aurthur researches doctors and the drug industries in an attempt to figure out what is wrong with his son and how to abate it if not cure it.Read more
