4-0 out of 5 stars Great Insightful Teaching
Tom has a gift for teaching the scriptures with incredible clarity. His teaching on demons, which much of this book is about, is unrivaled. The only minor drawback is a few spelling and syntax errors.I'd love to see him do a more comprehensive book on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book on DEMONS & EXORCISM
i enjoyed this book less for the heaven's gate cult material that it contains (which is very little -- someone looking for an in-depth treatise on that cult will probably be disappointed) & more for the information it contains on satan, demons & exorcism. the last 2 chapters in particular, "Was Exorcism Needed?" & "How to Free People from Deception," i think, are well worth the price of the entire book. (i get tired of reading books that promote the idea that exorcism is a highly-complicated, ritualized procedure that only highly-trained professionals [in other words: pastors & priests] should ever dare perform -- this book effectively dispels that out-dated notion.)5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and Treating Violent Behaviour
This book is a collection of clinical papers on the treatment of patients who have acted violently against others or, in attempting to end their own lives, have acted violently against themselves. This is one of the comparatively few books that contribute to the psychoanalytic literature on the treatment of violence.Repeatedly, it is made clear that this is about ACTUAL physical violence (or its threat) in or out of the clinical situation.5-0 out of 5 stars Violence and Suicide in Adolescence and Young Adulthood
"Perelberg has produced a book of the greatest topical importance to anyone involved in psychoanalysis. The review of the literature is by far the best on the subject. The various chapters of this most skillfully edited book are beautifully written and lay the foundations for a psychoanalytic theory of violence and suicide. They also make an important contribution to a theory of technique that understands symptoms as solutions to conflicts...It should be a standard work for many years to come."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very fine technical work.
This is an important technical work for anyone concerned with Attention Deficit Disorder. While not ideal for those without advanced degrees, parents and adults in an ADHD system may find it worth their while to work through the highly specialized language. The articles assess from different scientific perspectives the trajectory of stimulant medication. While priced very fairly given its highly technical content, ADHD support groups maybe able to share the cost and the book. Members within the group could select a chapter, and then present it to their group. Most of the articles contain at least a few sections that will be understandable to non-scientists. Such a process could improve physician patient communication about the medication.Detractors of stimulant medication have to come to grips with the enormous relief that these medications provide for adults and children. While the specific locations and dynamics of the epenephrine and dopamine interactions remain shrouded, the clinical evidence overwhelming attested to the efficacy of stimulant medication. Until detractors can produce similar empirical data, resources have to be allocated to treatments that actually work. The book's purpose is to bring together the best and most current data available as a way of supporting and furthering pharmaceutical research. In this purpose the editor's and contributor's reveals science at its best, methodically navigating a dense forest of dimly understood variables in an attempt to relieve human suffering and push back the boundaries of ignorance. They echo our ancestors who learned to harness fire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How to conduct a proper suicide evaluation
Dr. Tom White offers a persuasive view in how to properly evaluate suicide risk by using a systematic approach. As a former colleague of mine, I expected Dr. White to write an excellent book on this topic; because, as part of his job, before he retired, he reconstructed what led up to inmate suicides in the North Central Region for the U.S. Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Prisons. Therefore, he, more than most, was able to see what was missed by the evaluating clinician and other staff. His book was interesting, well-written, and useful. It serves to remind the evaluating clinican to cover all the bases when conducting a suicide assessment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinician Using the Book as a Textbook for Graduate Students
Dr. White's book is a neccesary read for all clinicians but is most important as a textbook for graduate psychology students. As practitioners, all of us realize that academic training in this vital area is lacking.Dr. White's book has consolidated the state of the art and then formulated the components needed for a thorough assessment process which also provides potential legal protection for the clinician. This is not a self-help book for the suicidal and depressed, it is not a therapy guide, it is an evaluative process description that serves very well in real world applications. My graduate students will be better prepared to handle the assessment of suicidal people by the time we have finished the book and course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
This book was beautifully written. It was honest, insightful, and just a pleasure to read.I got caught up in the experience of it all. The topic is one that is demonized and contested. Hunt put himself out in the open. And I really enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Despair to Hope
I'm rereading Cliffs of Despair, and am as awed by it now aswhen I first read the opening scene. It's a deeply moving and personal account of the author's attempt to understand more about a death in the family, his response to it, and about suicide itself. Having read months earlier about a popular suicide destination in England called Beachy Head, Hunt is driven to visit the place after his brother-in-law takes his own life at the age of twenty-one. His book reports in unflinching detail his conversations with police, cab drivers, members of the coastguard's rescue and recovery teams, and even a palm reader. Initially hesitant to articulate the reason for his visit, Hunt's sincerity and purity of purpose eventually earn him the trust and confidence of those most intimately acqainted with Beachy Head's allure. The result is a well-researched, sensitive, carefully written book that somehow avoids the risk of exploiting the livesand deaths it documents. I was touched and amazed by Hunt's compassion and integrity, his delicate use of humor, and by his willingness to reveal his own secrets along with those he discovers. I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to those who work or live with troubled adolescents, are interested in psychiatry, or who have been affected directly by suicide.
5-0 out of 5 stars There's Nothing Like The Truth From A Superb Jouranlist
This is one of the greatest books ever written about suicide, and even more so, about the redemptive power of knowledge from a spectacualar journalist who is telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but. Let's face it, no one likes to talk about it. But all ages, genders, from all walks of life often hit bottom with this alternative as seemingly their only way out. I cannot recall a more profoundly moving book that reaches into one's soul - and provides paradoxically a lifeline that one may need some day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars suicidal patients
dr. bongar's work is especially helpful for mental health professionals to help them understand and appreciate the experience through which the prospectively suicidal patient finds him or herself.like most books published by the apa, it is fairly exhaustive on research (although this review is written 4 years after publication and i acknowledge that a current revision would be welcome in a couple years), perhaps a bit theoretical, and does not provide succinctly written summaries for a busy professionals.it outlines clinical considerations and potential courses or action.it examines legal issues relevant to clinical intervention and failed intervention.the recommendations dr. bongar makes are excellent.this is not, in my opinion, a book for families or patients.i highly recommend this book for academicians and clinicians who wish to better understand and want to more effectively manage potentially suicidal situations.at $33, i think that the information i learned more than justified the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suicide Basics
Dr. Bongar gives a practicing psychotherapist the information she or he needs to decrease the risk of suicide by a patient and effectively intervene with the suicidal patient.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all practicing clinicians
The Suicidal Patient by Bruce Bongar provides a much-needed manual for all practicing clinicians. Why do I say all?Well, if you are a clinician the odds are that at some point in your career you will encounter a suicidal patient. In fact, according to Bongar, even "student therapists have a one in three chance of experiencing a patient suicide or suicide attempt during their training years."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guidelines for applied research can be derived from within.
I'm currently working on a school-based suicide intervention program in pursuing my PhD degree in Mexico. Eventhough the book covers most areas of interest in youth suicide there are only two chapters (the last two) dedicated to discussing possible empirical guidelines for treating suicide attempters. Naturally, it IS precisely treatment and outcome research with these adolescents that falls behind with what we currently know about teen suicide. Nevertheless, among the significant contributions of the book (profiling youth at-risk and reviewing proximal and distal riks factors for suicide behavior) are the references of scientific journal articles which I'm sure will be of great use to practitioners and grad students in the clinical psychology field. Finally, the case study vignettes offer rich insight on this complex phenomena within a psychosocial perspective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book describes the situation with amazing realism.
As a twenty year old gay man, I have found that the most insidious aspect of my orientation has nothing do do with my sexuality, but rather the way in which I, and those like me, are ostracized from society as a whole.Ifound that this book realistically describes what it is like to be gay inthis society for so many of us.There were two sections in this bookthat every gay man, lesbian or bisexual individual should read. The firstis the "report from the secretary's task force" and the second isthe one about the "mayor's commision."The rest of the book issomewhat dry, although still worth reading. However the two sections abovewere absolutely phenominal.I have found that reading them is anexhausting experience that fills one with powerfull emotions for a numberhours afterwards.I highly reccomend that everyone, especiallyheterosexuals read those sections. Most homosexuals will already know mostof what is in there, as they live it daily. However, most heterosexualshave no idea what so many homosexuals go through on a daily basis.I haveno doubt that most of them would be shocked by what they learn in thesepages.I assure any heterosexuals that the two aforementioned articles arecompletely accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of G/L/B/T youth suicide studies
This is an excellent compilation of various studies about the incidence ofsuicide by gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered teens. The collectionincludes the suppressed Bush Administration report that indicates that 30%of teen suicides are by g/l/b/t youth, when even conservative estimatesplace g/l/b/t teens at 5% of the total population. This disproportionaterepresentation, supported by the other studies included in the work, indicates a terrible suicide epidemic among g/l/b/t teens. Some of thestudies also indicate a correlation between homelessness, prostitution andg/l/b/t teens.Overall, an excellent work that brings together obscurestudies that might otherwise be hard to find. ...
