5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a moving personal history which will also inspire any conducting their own family history search.
In the late 1960s the author's father and mother joined a countercultural enclave in New Mexico, where their marriage floundered and Anna's father committed suicide. Anna was five years old at the time. Twenty years later the discovery of some old photos sends her on a journey to learn more about her father: her reconstruction of her past is charted in ASSEMBLING MY FATHER: A MEMOIR and provides a moving personal history which will also inspire any conducting their own family history search.

I can see I'm in the minority of reviewers of this book here. I had high hopes for this memoir that haven't panned out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I often randomly choose books to read, without reading reviews or recommendations.Sometimes that method backfires and I'm stuck with a stinker, but not in this case - I was very pleasantly surprised by this book.Perhaps it was the writing, perhaps it was the loss of my own father when I was very young (probably a combination of both) - this book touched me in a personal way that no other book has for some time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't think about it, just get it.
Do it for yourself.I didn't know what to do when my teenage son died. People don't understand suicide and it carried so many stigmas I was afraid to talk about it.With no family support and my husband unwilling/unable to discuss this issue I found this book was my companion and consolation. It helped me understand emotions that had me so confused. It gave credence to my own emotions which I tried to hide.No one ever "gets over it", but I did learn to cope with the help of sage advice from books like this.Another healer for me was, "After Suicide", but "Silent Grief" was the best. After such a tragedy trying to focus on reading was really difficult so be patient.I found this book is so easy to follow. It related to me when no one else could.
5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Not Alone
In 1989, my baby brother committed suicide. It has been said that, "Death is Final!"Death by Suicide never ends for the survivors.I have a wonderful friend, who gave me Silent Grief. It was a constantfriend, which walked me through some very heartbreaking times. It is likea friend who holds your hand and lets you know that it is always there, andyou are not alone. The way the book is presented is a great help. Peopleare different and need different support. Once you read it, you can pickit up and zero in on the areas that can be of more help to you as anindividual. With the help of this book, I've realized that even though thehaunting of Clyde's death will be forever with me, life does go on and thepain eases.Thank you to the author for such a great contribution to ourworld.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holds up, still relevant and still touches a nerve
I recently reread this book and was pleased, yet unsurprised to,see how well it's held up. The books easily stands on it's own merits, however I have been compelled to write a review after reading some of the bilge that others have written. Mostly along the lines of "I knew these kids or I'm from Jersey and she shouldn't have written that book", and other unintelligent nonsense and blindfolded provincial tripe. Comparing Dr. Gaines to the Taliban is about as clever as someone comparing homosexuals with the devil. If someone is that stupid as to make that comparison, they're in over their empty head just reading the word sociology, much less a book on the subject. 1-0 out of 5 stars What a disgrace
Gaines should be put in the same category as Taliban. I grew up in Bergenfield, did lines with the Buress sisters', Olton, and Rizzo at Garvey's house. Yes, alot of children back then did waste time just as I did. But don't think that Gaines few moments in Bergenfield could sum it all up. Gaines knew nothing but to be a glory stealer for a book that was going to happen anyway. How about the other suicides, Like Paul Murphy and Chris Hurt. You should have done your math Gaines. Cooper's Pond had finger digits from snapping turtles that were restless. Gaines had nothing in mind but selfishness intentions. I'd like to meet Gaines and do a reminder. A product of the Teenage Wasteland she has described makes me think..I got a B.S of Science in M.E. a few years ago and I've been serving in the military as well. Ms. Gaines should remember me if we ever cross paths. Bergenfield was a town at that time that was showing the future. Ms. Gaines didn't see that, she just wrote a book....Words, they are so easy

1-0 out of 5 stars Self-important rubbish
Gaines spent a month in Bergenfield and tried to turn others' pain into her gain. The book reads like her website: Look at me! Look at me! Look at me! She should be ashamed of herself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read on the Dangers of Death Fundamentalism
This newly revised and updated edition of Forced Exit provides a gripping overview and analysis of the assisted suicide and euthanasia movement and the threat it poses to human dignity and human equality.Author Wesley J. Smith lays out the chilling intellectual underpinnings of a movement that asserts there is such a thing as human life unworthy of life--and that other humans or "experts" should be called upon to determine whose life satisfies the criteria for continued existence.Smith gives readers clear and straightforward analysis of the important issues at stake and the implications for the most vulnerable among us.

5-0 out of 5 stars By their own hand. Deliberate self-harm and suicidal ideas in adolescents
This book written by professor Keith Hawton from the Centre of Suicide Research at the University of Oxford, Karen Rodham from the University of Bath and Emma Evans working in primary care is based on the study of over 6,000 adolescents (15-16 year olds) from 41 schools all over England. 5,293 completed all questions concerned with deliberate self-harm and a total of 13.2% (784) reported having deliberately tried to harm themselves at some point in their lives. Self-harm in the past year was reported by 8.6% (509) and far more common in females than males (11.2% versus 3.2%).

4-0 out of 5 stars Sibling Survivors
Swan-Miller writes sensitively and knowledgeably about the impact of the suicide of a family member on the surviving sibling(s). Using her personal experience as a starting off point, she explores a variety of sibling relationships and feelings about the suicide of a brother or sister. Through interviews with sibling survivors she exposes the wide variety of emotions that these survivors go through and the unique aspects of their experiences. Straight-forward prose, well organized chapters and an underpinning of psychological expertise help the reader understand and digest this difficult topic. Clearly there is a need for greater support and understanding of sibling relationships within the family dynamic- especially when there is a suicide. Though I think that a bibliography/list of resources for survivors would have been a useful inclusion, this book is an excellent resource for lay and professional alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The true stories of Japan's kamikaze corps survivors
Blossoms In The Wind: Human Legacies Of The Kamikaze presents the true stories of Japan's kamikaze corps survivors - pilots who were slated to sacrifice their lives in battle during World War II, but who survived through chance or fate. Now after the September 11th attacks, in an era when suicide attacks are becoming an increasingly serious threat in the present, Blossoms In The Wind explores what can bind a human heart and soul to commit to the ultimate sacrifice, as well as the bonds of brotherhood that remain between fellow warriors after sixty years of peace. A profound and directly relevant testimony, often directly recounting the survivors' perspectives in their own words.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Reading
This book is, hands down, the most well-written, respectful accounting of the tokubetsu kougeki-tai ("kamikaze" special attack units) I have read. Instead of flinging about baseless accusations of brainwashing, fanaticism, or suicidal fervor, Sheftall seeks to get the answers from the men of the tokkou-tai themselves and present their experiences for the English-speaking world.
3-0 out of 5 stars The Human Experience of the Kamikaze
This book is not so much an historical overview of the scope of the kamikaze war initiative expended by Japan in WWII (including Zeros, Oka manned rockets, and Kaiten human torpedoes) as it is a collection of memoirs from the surviving participants as related to an American professor who has done an admirable research job while teaching at a University in modern Japan. While you can't help but appreciate the patriotism of the survivors, and empathize with their mind-set in committing their very lives to resisting foreign invaders who were supposedly intent on committing mass mayhem and carnage as falsely preached to them by their government at the height of the imminent invasion of Japan, I got the distinct impression that these remaining samurai were more intent on justifying their actions as noble attempts to ward off Western "colonial aggression", than in admitting to and condemning the scorched earth mentality of the Japanese warlords who so nonchalantly sent their subordinates and young men off to their unnecessary death to merely forestall the inevitable. The tactical successes of the kamikaze were limited and were primarily confined to the invasion of Okinawa. While I don't doubt their courage, the Japanese war veterans need to come to grips with the legacy of the brutality of the Japanese war machine and admit they committed crimes against humanity.Without appreciating the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat it. ...
