4-0 out of 5 stars Choosing to live is one of a kind
Choosing to live is one of a kind. It offers cognitive behavioral therapy as the basis for effective suicide intervention. The first few chapters discuss suicide's stigma and risk factors. The first chapter appropriately opens with the statement, "Getting Rid of the Stigma"-an accurate description of our priorities.4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive therapy
I read this book for obvious reasons.I believe that this is a valuable book for many people out there who are suffering so much that living has become unbearable. However, in my case, it didn't give me the help that I needed.I don't have answers ofwhy, since other reviews show positive accomplishment.I am severely depressed and found myself struggling very hard to do the book's homework.Regardless, I worked on the procedures and even felt positive for a very brief moment but unfortunately I am back to square one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for both the person struggling and for the clinician
I do individual therapy and crisis intervention in a large community mental health center. This book has proven itself as an effective tool for helping those in crisis, as well as those who have an ongoing struggle withsuicidal thoughts. This is, by far, the most practical, readable, anduseful book written for the person struggling to stay alive.I encouragenearly all of the clients with whom I work to purchase and use this book. I even keep a loaner copy on hand for those who cannot afford it! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on a sensitive subject
I don't do much reading in psychology these days, although many years ago I completed a Master's and most of the coursework for the Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Calfornia. I ultimately decided not to pursue a career in it, so never finished the Ph.D., but at one time had an excellent background in the subject. Anyway, I happened to see this book in the psychology section of a local book store, and although the clinical area wasn't my specialty (I being more in the psychobiology area), it caught my eye, and I ended up reading some of it.4-0 out of 5 stars It answered a lot of questions
I found this book wery good, especially becouse now I know its normal to feel the way I do after my mothers suicide.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a teen, freak, or outlaw - just suicidal?
Actually, I've met very few people in my life that didn't at least at times fall into the freak or outlaw catagories... but I wouldn't want you to get the idea that you have to be outrageous or extraspectacular or political in your freakiness to be able to benefit from this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Kate serves it up down home style
I don't know if it's boorish to predicate a review with my own trans status, but hey, I am if it matters. Seriously, I love Kate Bornstein because she tells us exactly what we need to hear - we are human, we suffer, we do not deserve to be punished (unless that's what we want). I use all Kate's books not just for myself, but to point other people in my life toward as a gender primer and affirmation. She's an easy, interesting and heartfelt author who shares the secrets so many of us are too afraid to admit are our own. This is an essential reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate ROCKS!
I found myself reading this book the way I savor fine wine.I literally read it in 10 page incriments, partly because I wanted to make sure that I was fully digesting the contents and because I never wanted to reach the book's end.Kate is a mind-blowing, earth-shattering activist who continues to inspire me.I picked up this book at a time in my life when I wasn't feeling low or depressed, but 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens Freaks and Other Outlaws provided me with such a life affirming experience, that words don't even begin to do justice to it's impact.Know that I will be recommending this book to anyone who will listen! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Book Review
This book details the real life story of a boy at fourteen that decided he wnated to kill himself. After he tries he decides he does not want to go through with it and he gets himself all wet to put the fire out. After this he goes through great detail of the year after the sucide attmept and his inner thoughts about the whole suicide. I really enjoyed reading this book and I believe that this book is good for many people to read to truly understand all of the pain that can come from commiting suicide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good description of teen depression
As someone who has lived with depression for many years and who as a teenager has also tried to hurt myself, I felt that Runyon did a good job of describing the elusive and often non-descript feelings of teen depression--including his inability (post-suicide attempt) to talk with his parents and psychiatric professionals about why he set himself on fire. While some might want this book to be the rememdy for depressed teens everywhere, it is not a self-help book for teens disguised as memoir. There are no answers for troubled teens.Rather, it is a memoir.Even without providing any answers, it is still a good way to open the topic of teen suicide and depression. I loaned the book to my mother who said it did help her understand a little more what I was feeling when I was a teen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching and learning tool...
I recommend it as a good read for adolescents and adults and as a great teaching tool for middle school and older students. I plan to read excerpts to my students this year.

2-0 out of 5 stars a bit scattered
I thought the book was not well organized and also a bit dated.5-0 out of 5 stars Words I Never Thought to Speak:..Life..in Wake of suicide
Of all the many books on suicide I've read through the years, this book rates highest on my list of books that are helpful in terms of the understanding it provides to survivors of suicide, including both the legacy and the different ways we process and come to terms with a suicide. What I spent years trying to understand in myself, my family members, and other suicide survivors, I found on the pages of this well-written and organized book. Time and again while reading, I would say aloud with some excitement: "That's WHY!"or "Exactly!" or "I wish I'd written that!" In addition, I couldn't resist sharing some of the passages and/or the insights I'd gained to others who were either struggling with the legacy suicide leaves behind or were contemplating suicide themselves. This book clearly shows that suicide leaves its own distinct fingerprints on the hearts and lives of its survivors. I wish I'd discovered the book long ago. Kudos to Victoria Alexander!

5-0 out of 5 stars An touching collection of the stories of survivors.
An excellent read for health care professionals, survivors of suicide andanyone seeking stories of human strength, Victoria Alexander offers a wellorganized collection of narratives from survivors of suicide. Raw in it'shonesty, it offers hope of a future to the recently bereaved and areference point for professionals and laypeople caring for those leftbehind. A survivor myself, it allowed me to address issues I had burriedyears earlier. A decade of collecting these touching, sometimes painfulstories has allowed insight into a suffering that shame so often causes usto conceal. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars With literary variety and a lot of psychology.
A lot of this book is thoroughly literary, with psychological insights.Irony is not listed in the index, but addictions, alcoholism, depression, drugs, manic depression (bipolar syndrome), mental illness, overdose, paranoia, schizophrenia, Vietnam War, World War I, and World War II are listed as some of the mechanisms which were either meaningful to certain writers or a means of explaining their behavior.Readers may pick other topics as their favorite parts of this book, with a few preferring the musical highlights relating to Adolph Hitler, Richard Wagner, and someone whose family was full of the suicidal tendencies of people who have problems adjusting to the world as it is.The ultimate irony, for me, would be if this book demonstrates something about the fatal nature of truth, if each of the subjects can be shown to have known something that the rest of us have not figured out yet.1-0 out of 5 stars Eating Cardboard
This book is a collection of tidbits of knowledge that anyone could have put together by simply reading each author's biography. The author's dry, pedantic style is as exciting as eating cardboard, rendering what could have been an interesting book into a simple reference work. This book is simply a reference and a third-hand reference at best, good for writing undergraduate and high school term papers, as little if none of the information seems to come from a primary source. There are no fresh insights, nothing much new here, just the same things one would find in any reference book, and only here they are condensed into a single source. Written like a reference book, the author could have produced the same thing, by cutting and pasting from an encyclopedia5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, fascinating, informative reading.
Some of the greatest writers in the world chose an untimelydeath by suicide, and this charts their lives and psychologicalconditions. It's hard to easily categorize this treatise, which considers both their literary lives and their psychology; but any studying such writers from Anne Sexton and Ernest Hemingway to the more modern Michael Dorris, will find Final Draft an important survey covering more than a century of literary figures. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Women and Power within the Ottoman Empire.
First off the book explains WHY female harems existed in the first place. The simple answer is this. If the sovereign gets married to a Princess of another power that power could lay claim to the throne.BUT if he has offspring with a bunch of slaves, women who are not of the Muslim faith and are not linked to powerful families, than outsiders could not lay claim to the throne by right of blood.5-0 out of 5 stars A serious look at the lives of women in Ottoman Turkey
This book might be a disappointment to someone looking for gossip aboutlife in the harem as envisioned by writers of fiction. But for anyonereally interested in understanding the role of women and the domestichousehold in the royal court of a great Muslim Empire, this is the realthing, brilliantly researched and thoughtfully presented.

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment...much to my suprise
I found this book to be boring.Plain and simple. This book read like acollege text book and not a colorful interpretation of Ottoman life.Read more

This collection of essays, short stories, and poems all deal with the "Ultimate Question": to be, or not to be.Each philosopher, writer, or poet has contributed his or her own thoughts regarding suicide. Some of the selections are whimsical, such as a poem which discussesdifferent ways of "doing it".Others are thought-provoking andemotional pieces, which bring up thoughts about why people commit suicide, and the feelings felt by those they leave behind. This book is suitablefor scholars, teachers, professionals of all sorts, and especially thosewho may think twice before answering their own "UltimateQuestion". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful, insightful, healing, life changing...
I have faced head on the aftermath of suicide and this book was finally able to bring healing and answers after 10 years of not understanding 'why' and feeling guilty and ashamed.I would not have been able to face the catastrophic grief this book brings to life any earlier than this. This is not for someone in their first years of healing but if you have a suicide in your past or have ever contimplated suicide then read every page.I read every day, and most days had to stop when I couldn't see the words for the tears. But in the end I feel free of the guilt I carried for so long, and understood, and normal again. It's different but a new different. And it's stopped any thought of contagious or genetic suicide from effecting me.Walking through the grief of the surviving families was the most healing, powerful, insightful, life changing experience I've known.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not for voyeours or those with casual interrest!
A must read for those with a serious interest in the study of suicide.I found this book six years ago after the suicide death of my friend's only child, a beautiful and talented 18 year old. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough
Really an excellent surveyof the subject, with heartbreaking case studies interwoven. This book is very well written, deals a lot with historical treatments and perceptions of suicide, as well as currentscientific thinking.Lots of facts, not a "how-to-cope" book butvery useful if you're looking for information. ...
