4-0 out of 5 stars An insight into a preventable public health problem
Most of the research on youth suicide focuses on clinical profiling but there aren't many studies that reflect the adolescent's own perspective. Even though the book does not pursue qualitative psychological research (say, discourse analysis), it does achieve the goal of "cruising" the reader (parents of teenagers, hopefully) into the heterogeinity that suicidal adolescents conform. As a clinical psychologist I consider Crook's approach very valuable in improving intervention parameters by rescuing and not putting aside what these kids at risk have to say of their own experience. I believe effective psycotherapy with suicidal teens has to actively incorporate not only risk factors and comorbidity but also individual differences, circumstances and resources. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Small Caveat
This is an excellent book, but I have to take issue with its subtitle. By 1750 Calvinism was no longer a majority opinion in Geneva, at least, not the orthodox variety that had made Geneva synonomous with Calvinism. The ideas of the enlightenment had so thoroughly affected the Reformed movement that no conclusions can be drawn from Geneva's place as the capital of calvinism and the increase in suicides there. In fact, a very good case could be made for the opposite. Although a scion of the famous Turretin family was Geneva's leading theologian at the time, it was his watering down of his father and grandfather's calvinism that he was best known for. A better subtitle would have been "Suicide after the decline of Calvinism in Geneva".

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough, scholarly, deftly presented case study
Choosing Death: Suicide And Calvinism In Early Modern Geneva by Jeffrey R. Watt (Associate Professor in History, University of Mississippi) is a thorough, scholarly, deftly presented case study of the Republic of Geneva and its history of suicide. From views of the suicide in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that regarded self-destruction as the result of demonic possession, and that harshly appropriated the property of those who took their own lives, to the late eighteenth century turn of thought that recognized the role that mental illness and personal trauma often played in suicide. Choosing Death is a fascinating, informative, thoughtful and thought-provoking social history of an admittedly grim subject within the historical context of a proud and sovereign European nation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars it's a padded-out thesis
Suicide is certainly interesting and informative, but it can be slow going at times. It has all the repetitiveness of a five-paragraph essay, and is written in a rickety academic prose. By which I unfortunately do not mean that it's abstruse or deeply complex. In other words: not an artistic tour-de-force. Also, don't look to this book as a way of understanding suicide, which is out of its scope to explain. But, like a good workhorse, the book gets the job done, and does succeed in tying a great number of facts and sources together. If you're interested in Dostoevsky's religious convictions, or the society in which he was writing, this is a wonderfully intruiging book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ways of Living, Ways of Surviving
This is the true story of the relationship between a middle-aged English publisher (Athill herself) and a young Egyptian writer. Its narrative concerns the disintegration of the writer's state of mind and, with it, of his relationship with Athill; it ends with the writer's suicide. As has been remarked about Athill's other books, this account is remarkable for its honesty. Athill is an unusually aware and articulate woman in whom the faculties of imaginative sympathy and of dispassionate appraisal are both extraordinarily strong as well as more or less equivalent (these gifts have presumably contributed towards her successful career as a publisher). I read the book as a 'debate' between two ways of existing: on the one hand the egocentric, relentless, consuming passion of the young writer; Athill's moderate, self-restraining but not unemotional rationality on the other. It is an important debate and has made for great writing before (Hamlet versus Horatio?) - partly because it is so complex: both ways of living overlap with each other and also in some way depend upon each other for definition. Each way of living, too, has something the other cannot have (abandoned emotion's intensity; rationality's ability to survive). In its own very modest way, then, this book felt to me like a classic account of life at its most real. ... Read more
