A great reference
This text is a great reference for statistical inference in the presence of ordering or shape restrictions. Isotonic regression, tests for trends and shape restrictions, and many other applied methodologies are presented clearly with illustrative examples. There is a strong theoretical presentation as well, viewing an isotonic regression function simple as a solution to a L2 restricted minimization problem. The Best Introductory Statistics Text Ever Written
I took Art's honors psychometric methods course at UW-Madison when I was a sophomore.Although I am a research analyst in industry and have a Master's degree in Statistics, I still use his book, both as a reference for my own research and to educate clients and co-workers.His book puts the math into plain English so that even non-mathematicians have a fighting chance to understand it.I highly recommend it every chance I get, even to people who have no experience in psychology. ... A Poor Choice for Beginners
A difficult to read text.I have used it as a text for a statistics course I taught (it was not my choice).There are few illustrations, the text is not clearly written, and despite this being the 6th edition, there are still numerous errors in the solutions given for the problems at the end of each chapter.Further, no use of current statistical software is mentioned.Many students have been frustrated by this text -- there are better options out there. ... Stick with Tufte
Don't waste your time on this one.Get Ed Tufte's first two books.Wainer spends many pages regurgitating and adulating Tufte's previously published work--unfortunately with less clarity.

Fantastic journey through the world of charts and graphs!
I read this book, cover to cover, after flipping through looking at the pictures. What a great read! I will never look at a chart again, without a newfound (and critical ) eye towards the graphical representation of the information. I am also glad to see the author writing for the on-line e-zine IntellectualCapital -

An excellent resource for the Statistically Challenged
I was completing my dissertation in Clinical Psychology when I hit the wall. I am not fluent in the language of statistics and SPSS was much too complicated for me to understand immediately. I acquired this book from a friend and I can't tell you how much this book saved my life! It explained not only how to use the program in very easy steps, it explained WHY and HOW to pick your statistical procedures in language that was simple. Reading through the book and looking at the examples helped me understand how to pick the appropriate statistical procedures (and why), how to enter the data, how to pull down the appropriate tests, and how to look at the data calculations and make conclusions. THere are no wasted pages in this book (88 pages) and I swear it helped me get through my dissertation on my own (which I passed!). Don't hesitate to buy this book if you are working on your psychology or social science thesis or dissertation. It's a fantastic resource! ... Read more

Amazing
I can't believe I waited so long to read this book -- it truly is a classic. This is the way AI should be done: by focusing on the right level of abstraction, situated above the level of neuroscience but below the level of simple input-output function mapping. Finally, a computer model that makes those first steps towards doing the same thing that people do.
