Fabulous introduction to different forms of ANOVA
During my years in graduate school, I've noticed a general lack of familiarity in graduate students, from engineering or from biological backgrounds, in statistical techniques. I also often read papers (usually in the medical science journals) that demonstrate variable levels of statistical understanding. After reading many book chapters, MATLAB materials and web pages, I found this book to be the clearest and easiest introduction to ANOVA techniques. I've been recommending it to many people that depend on self-learning to substantiate their competence in data analysis.

The Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field
Not only is this book fascinating, it's the only one of it's kind. The book has also proved very useful to me in life. As a graduate student I used Poincar�'s implicit `advice' (described in the book) in the following way. In electrodynamics we had a long problem sheet to hand in every two weeks. I started by writing down answers to all problems that I knew. Then, I thought about the next-easiest problem each day walking twice to and from the University (about 1 1/2 hours altogether). When the answer came I wrote it down and iterated the process. Before the end of two weeks most of the problems (from Jackson) had been solved. Poincari's advice is very good about giving the unconscious a chance to work. Phooey and double phooey on the silly, uncreative skinner-box types and other behaviorists who don't recognize the unconscious as the source of creativity!

The Psychology of Math
The Mathematician's Mind is a study on how research mathematicians go about the business of advancing their field.Jacques Hadamard, a prominent mathematician, wrote this psychology text over 50 years ago, after having done his best work 50 years prior. Although in some ways dated, both in content and in writing style, the book provides an interesting examination of the role of the conscious and subconscious in solving a problem, particularly the process of incubation and (seemingly) sudden inspiration. He brings up the roles intuition and logic play in the way various mathematicians go about their business.Hadamard also examines the influence of aesthetics in not just choosing a problem, but in solving it. He studies the choice of research direction, with the interesting comment that Hadamard himself avoided areas of research where there was already a great deal of activity. This is a short study of how creative thought works.Hadamard, a world-class mathematician best known for his proof of the prime number theorem in 1896, wrote this in the 40's, basing it on correspondence with many of the great living mathematicians of his time.The actual questions he posed are preserved in an appendix.Read more

Very Helpful
I was happy to obtain this book and use it for a graduate level research methods class in social psychology. You might want to check out the author's website at Western Ontario U. if you are interested in where he is comming from (ie he is a social psychologist). It original pub. price is $40, so these remainders are bargains!

Ever fell in love with a textbook?
I sure as heck never had before. I am dyslexic, math phobic, and a graduate student in Psych who must take 1 full year of advanced stat. Terrifed of this prospect, I bought this book. It is, without doubt, the best text book, ever. It is funny (to the point of being downright cheeky), laid out exceedingly well, progresses from one idea to another naturally, and explains all these confusing concepts easily. I actually looked forward to reading it in my spare time, and I promise you, I am not a math geek! There simply is not a better Intro to Statistics book out there. Better than cartoon guide, stats for dummies, etc. Save your money and time and go right to the source.

Behavioral Statistics in Action
In my field I must read many research studies dealing with various topics.I've taken research classes and have learned to recognize key statistical concepts but I must admit that I've never fully understood how they work,what they really mean (no pun intended) or how they were derived.Don'tget me wrong.I've studied, but most texts were just too advanced rightfrom the start.Now that I've read and worked through the sample questionsin this text I finally feel ready to tackle more advanced texts.Thelanguage used is clear and concise with clearly presented examples andapplications of concepts. The sequencing is well thought out and quiteseamless.I highly recommend it for anyone just starting research classeswho has had little or nopreparation in statistics.However, knowledge ofbasic algebra is a must.If you haven't had algebra for some time, you maywant to brush up a bit. ... Don't overlook this book-a great conceptual intro to ANOVA.
As someone who has read many books covering this topic (e.g., Neter et al., Kirk) I strongly recommend reading this book!This book is particularly useful if you are taking or have had courses covering analysis of variance (ANOVA).Even for the mathematically sophisticated reader it is easy to walk away with a fuzzy, unclear understanding of the uses of ANOVA techniques (sad but true).This book explains how to use these by parsimoniously explaining the conceptual foundations of ANOVA.The books links statistical concepts to the variety of formulas and inferential techniques one encounters, such as two-way and mult-way ANOVAs, interaction, testing of simple effects. ...
