5-0 out of 5 stars A great Stats resource!
The only topics missing from this bookthat I wish had been discussed are validity (concurrent, longitudinal predictive, diagnostic) and item analysis (difficulty and discrimination indexes).A few pages are devoted to reliability, but I would have liked to see more detailed discussion devoted to the differences between the types of reliability measurement (test-retest, split halves, and parallel forms reliability).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory textbook -- also great for review or supplement
This book does the best job of any book I've seen of introducing introductory statistical concepts. This book will give you the foundation upon which to build your statistical repertoire.
5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
Well done, Professor Caldwell!
5-0 out of 5 stars A mean album that's very much à la mode, reviewed by me, dean. (median)
Sally Caldwell has always enjoyed a tempestuous relationship with author and Algebra biographer Kenn Amdahl, and there are allusions to that relationship in the cover notes of this stunning album from one of the most enigmatic bands of the last century, Statistics. Back in the 70's, you were either a Blurred fan, or a Oascissor Sisters fan, and that analogy can be applied to Statistics and their archrivals Algebra. Statistics fans, or "nerds", as they christened themselves, hated Algebra, and their fans ("geeks"), rivalries often spilling over into chanting, violence, and bottle throwing at concerts. Caldwell cheekily refers to Amdahl as a "nuisance parameter" in her detailed sleeve notes - a jibe that will surely have recriminations, although not on the same scale as those involving Tupac Shaker, this reviewer hopes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting... but needs a better edit
The book presents a very interesting method: reducing power analysis to the F distribution. The authors provide very compelling and convincing arguments for the use of power analysis. At times you feel as if their arguments are not well referenced or backed-up, however, especially if you have read a number of technically-oriented statistical texts. Nevertheless, the arguments are provided a good intuitive feel.
2-0 out of 5 stars Almost good.
This text was interesting and informative, but belabored the value of minimum effect hypothesis testing and pretty much ignored confidence intervals as an alternative.Worse, this book contains some mistakes: the noncentral F distribution formula (A3 in Appendix A) is written with parameters that are not explained, and also the authors state that the classical hypothesis testing is false "by definition".This is simply not true; it may be false more often than not, but it is not false by definition. But the worst shortcomings of this book are that it propagates the use of statistical tables instead of clearly explaining the underlying formulae. With ubiquitous computers, it is ridiculous to think that people still need to consult tables, which are restrictive in the alpha values. After reading this text, it is clear that power depends on effect size, alpha, the standard deviations of the treated and untreated populations, and the sample size, but nowhere do the authors clearly show what this functional relationship is.I guess they think that gamma functions and the like are just too difficult mathematics and force people to blindly work with tables in a haze of confusion, wondering the functional relationship of these variables. Finally, they do point out the desired relative seriousness of type I vs. type II errors (a major plus) but fail to emphasize this point as much as it deserves. For example, if there is no a priori reason to favor type I over type II errors or vice versa, then these should be set equal to each other and the sample size calculated from the formulae.Using power = 0.8 with alpha = 0.1 may be acceptable in their field of psychology but is incongruous with the point that they belabor - that type II errors are typically more serious. In conclusion, I would say to read this book from a library and hold off on buying until they (hopefully) correct these flaws in a second edition.Unfortunately, I have yet to see a better text that does clearly explain the functional relationship between the variables involved in power calculations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, useful
This book is clearly and concisely written and provides both an introduction to power analysis and a description of a single set of procedures for power analysis when using any of the procedures covered by the general linear model. If you're familiar with power analysis it's fairly easy to skip the sections you don't need to read without impairing your ability to follow the development of the power analysis model.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridge the gap
Statistics books are either too hard or way too basic for non-statisticians.
3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of theory, not enough application
I've read the other reviews and I generally agree: This is a well written stats book, especially if you are trying to learn the underlying theories rather than just randomly banging around on a keyboard. However, don't expect this book to be a particularly good choice if you need to do anything much more difficult than a one-way ANOVA.Even though this book is 770+ pages long, Field doesn't address realistic scenarios. For example, even though he devotes about 210 pages to all sorts of ANOVA, there is no mention of repeated measures ANCOVA, which is not that unusual. In some places, he seems to suggest that something is really difficult (e.g., contrasts in repeated measures ANOVA) and then offers only weak examples of what to do about it with no mention of how to report what you've done. In fact, he offers very few examples of how to report results, and in some cases, his running examples are nonsignificant so his reporting examples stop short. All together, this is a good stats theory book with an intro to SPSS, but it's not the kind of book that is going to get you through many real-world analyses. I would recommend this book to undergraduates and graduate students who feel they need some more background, but folks in the field are better off looking elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was exactly what I was looking for!
The author provides clear explanation of various statistic techniques; what each of them means, when to be applied, and how to use them in a very understandable way. This was what I was exactly looking for. Good examples with step by step guide with actual dialog boxes from the SPSS window are also very helpful. I really like it a lot. It was a good priced book considering what it provides. Best stat book I've bought ever! Thank you!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Novices Should Start Here
If you haven't got a clue about spectral analysis, this is the ideal place to start exploring the frequency domain. Although the examples are from psychological studies, this is not a reason why an economist shouldn't read it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent manual for those ignoring everything about spec
I think this book is extremely simple. The only knowledge required to understand it is perhaps Ordinary Least Squares. A theoretical explanation of the spectral analysis is not in the book. There is only a brief comment on De moivre's theorem (the one allowing and sustaining the whole spectral analysis) in a footnote. The main purpose of the author is to deliver an empirical methodology for empirical researchers not interested in the theories. The advantage is that, once you see such empirical applications, you understand the underlying idea of spectral Analysis. The elementary examples are very illuminating. The book is well organized and the review of "de-trending" (on this particular subject, I would like to say that the scientific discussion has evolved a lot in the last 20 years and the author's presentation is a little bit old), "harmonic analysis", "periodogrammes" seems pretty coherent. Perhaps the only drawback is that the text is a little repetitive and thus, slightly boring; but this is a minor problem, if you consider that this style will make more solids the understanding of the fundamental concepts. It's a great introduction to spectral analysis. Students having standard mathematical knowledge should begin here and then start reading more technical works, such as Bloomfied's "Fourier Analysis of Time Series" and the chapter of spectral analysis of Hamilton's "Analysis of Time Series".

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptionally clear

5-0 out of 5 stars Got me through my doctorate
This isn't a complete book on SPSS and statistics, but it's a marvelous resource for punching in your numbers and reading the results. It takes you step-by-step through entering data, setting up your analyses, and interpreting your results.I loaned this to another grad student friend of mine, and it took me months to get it back--it's that useful to have on hand whenever you get stuck with SPSS.

2-0 out of 5 stars INTRO to STATISTICS
This book has little about using SPSS (the very basics). It has much, much more about simple statistics.I bought the book to learn SPSS, not statistics. If you are looking for a book on how to use SPSS, I recommendyou look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth looking at.
I have taken several classes that have used SPSS. When I started taking these classes I had little to no knowledge about statistics. It was extremely frustrating to understand the texts that were put out by SPSS. After reviewing this book, I have a clear understanding of how to use SPSS.It made the difficult task of understanding the output simple. SPSS isintuitive, in the sense that it is simple to pick a test and run it.However, understanding which particular piece of data is of interest to youis not intuitive. This book helps clear up the jungle of data that you haveto trek through to come up with your conclusion. ... Read more
