5-0 out of 5 stars If you ask questions professionally, READ this book!
People tend to see asking questions as an intuitive, conversational means of communication.Wrong.As someone in the professional survey field (SuperSurvey.com), I see a lot of questions every day -- good and bad. Some questions are so poorly written that the responses actually reduce the quality of the survey results.4-0 out of 5 stars A survey researcher from Missoula, Montana
This book has been an indispendible reference for professional surveyresearchers since it was written.Asking Questions provides questionnairewriters with extremely useful design guidance and checklists. Mostimportantly, the book is very easy to read and use. Sudman and Bradburn'sstatus as leading survey methodologists adds to the book's credability.4-0 out of 5 stars A good book on survey question design
I was looking for a book on improving survey questions that provided information on reducing bias in survey wording and structure. This book was a great help to me and exceeded my expectations. The book addressespre-survey issues, specific question-type issues, and survey structure(ordering of questions) issues in a very organized format with plenty ofclear examples. The only down-side to the book is that it was written backin '82. I'm wondering if there is a more current version of an equivalentbook. I wasn't able to find one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, easy to follow intro to LGCM theory and techniques
This is an excellent book for anyone who wishes to not only understand the theory behind latent growth curve modeling but also seeing how it is directly applied in a number of situations. For a reader like me whodepends upon the literature to help understand newer statisticalapproaches, a book like this is a breath of fresh air.The book presentsvery clearly how to set up a basic LGC model and includes other topics suchas dealing with missing data, interaction effects and multilevel approachesto longitudinal data analysis. The appendix contains a number of exampleLGCM models in the software language of EQS, LISREL and AMOS. I most highlyrecommend this text for beginners and more advanced modelers alike! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction for Social Scientists
Gill's book is ideal for psychologists and others who tend to recieve minimal statistical training but want to learn (1) why to pursue Bayesian methods when p-values seem to be doing okay, and (2) how to start with those methods. You need to know about various continuous and discrete probability distributions, and also what an expectation is (I'm serious, many psychologists don't), so if all you know are the mechanics of t-tests, ANOVAs and regression, you have to buff up your theory a bit before reading this book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not the book I would choose for a course
I do not usually like mathematical or statistical books "for Social Scientists". This is not a complete exception. It is very useful as an introduction to Bayesian statistics but examples and applications are neither interesting nor real problems of the discipline. Therefore, the "applicable" side of the book diminishes its value and makes it only a handbook for those with low background in mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The days of significance testing are numbered...
First off, this book is written in plain English for those of us with less than stellar mathematical backgrounds. Also, the level at which it is written suggests it would make a great masters level stats course supplimental reading choice. The author walks us through the history of statistical testing and shows us where social scientists have gone wrong.Tests of statistical significance are often considered the most important indication of publication worthiness, or of experimental success whereas they really are not.For instance, what good is finding a significant difference between two groups (or in regression, finding an independant varaible significantly predicting a dependant varaible) if the effect size is so small as to be trivial?Kline discusses this in terms of "statistical significance vs. practical significance". This is one example of the very logical arguments he presents regarding aspects of behavioral statistics that most of us probably take for granted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of interactions in regression
This is a very nice updated version of the original edition. The book is short at 89 pages, information packed, and solidly grounded. The book is meant for people who *use* interaction effects in thier research. (It is not meant for people who study regression methods.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Statistics Resource
This book and its companion volume are invaluable resources if you need to understand or work with multivariate statistics. It is easy to read and I would recommend it over any of the required texts that I have had for statistics courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars I read more - and I understood more!
Like its predecessor, "Reading and Understanding MORE Multivariate Statistics" achieves exactly what its title implies. Geared toward non-statisticians in behavioral and social science fields, this book provides clear and reasonably simple explanations of common multivariate analyses. This book includes special attention to scales of measurement, reliability and generalizability theory, item response theory, and assessing the validity of measurement. In addition, it covers cluster analysis, Q-technique factor analysis, structural equation modeling, canonical correlation analysis, repeated measures analysis, and survival analysis. The authors present the conceptual underpinnings, underlying assumptions, and basic procedures for each analysis with a minimum of equations and many concrete examples. The book not teach you how to perform the analyses but does provide references for those who wish to get more detailed information. As a research scientist who doesn't always remember everything I learned in graduate statistics class, I find this book an invaluable aid keeping up with the current literature in my field and in making the most of statistical consultations. This book is ideal for anyone whose job requires them to be a "consumer" of research; for researchers who wish to further their understanding of data analysis; and as a companion text for graduate statistics classes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent starter for non-mathematicians
this is a fabulous book for non-mathematicians - if you are workingworking on a PhD in physics or mathematics then you will not need it but if you are business school major who want to try out little un-authenticated statistics then try this book - I am serious this is a easy to read book - it does not go into details but skims the tops extremely well and we know that the cream is in the top (lol)

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-explained statistical concepts.
In this small book the author managed to explain statistical concepts in the way that no other book that I looked at could do on hundreds of pages. You will definitely learn a great deal of statistics. The author does not overwhelm, is consistent with his presentation, and EXPLAINS. That final touch, simple explanation (in the language anyone can understand) is what's missing from all other books.
4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Supplemental Text for Statistical Analysis at Any Level
For those of us with mathmatical weakness, an understandable work on basic statistical methods is a godsend.Having found myself in a graduate level econometrics course, Statistics For the Terrified is rarely out of reach. All too often statstics manuals, texts and instructors speak in tounges not always understood by the uninformed. However, Stats for the Terrified allows the reader to look up concepts and terminolgy and actually understand the explanations. The authors use few formulas to explain concepts, and when mathmatical equations are a necessity, the methods are explained in such a way that the Greek symbols and letters make sense. Indeed, regardless of field, Statistics for the Terrified is helpful in any work which requires statistical anaylysis. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Maybe for the APA style...
I was deeply disappointed with the book. The tables look as done with a typewriter, good for those missing that 70's thesis. Apparently nobody told the authors that p-values are no longer to be reported as p<0.05, but with their full value. And finally, there is no "clever" solution to more complex tables, but just tons of tables with pretty standard results. What is reported in the tables is not widely applicable too. In my area - epidemiology - we do not report standard errors, we report confidence intervals. We also do not report mean squares, f-values, or t-values, or chi-squared-values and so on - we report only the full p-values. If you're not into APA, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars No more puzzling over tables!
This is an invaluable resource for anyone who needs to present their research results in APA style. This is not a statistics text but rather a manual for generating tables. Each chapter focuses on a different statistic and includes a "play it safe" comprehensive table as well as several variations.Well-organized, practical, and concise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Students and Professionals Using APA Style
This book has been needed for twenty years. Students and professional researchers who write dissertations and manuscripts using APA style have desperately needed this very helpful resource. The book illustrates standard presentation tables for more than twenty types of standardstatistical tests. The concept of "Play It Safe" tables will saveresearchers hundreds of hours of time. The table illustrations are clearand precise depending on the focus of the data to be presented. The fewwords that are written prior to presenting a table are helpful inclarifying the data contained in the tables. One small problem is noted. It would have been helpful to include how APA style recommends reportingstatistical data in paragraph form in this book also. Despite this omission, I still give this book 5 stars. ... Read more
