4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Spiral Binding Doesn't Last
Very good content with great examples. The only reason I give this book 4 out of 5 stars is for the spiral binding. When new the spirals work nicely and book lays flat but if you open the book and actualy use it often this nice feature soon wears out and the book falls apart. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading and Understanding Multivariate Statistics by Grimm
A good resource for someone taking a psyc stat class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Treatment of Sophisticated Mathemeatical Concepts
I've long wanted a better explanation of Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues than I recieved in a econometrics or statistics textbook. This book gives me an incredibly clear understanding of what they are. Now when I look back at the mathematical interpretation again it means so much more. This is a fantastic book that would highly recommend to anyone wanting a clear conceptual understanding of these sophisticated topics. 5 stars, no questions about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best if You do not Know that much Statistics
I had only taken a very elementary course in Statistics and this book helped me to really improve my knowledge of Statistics. Either you want only to know what's going on in Statistics world or you want to start to learn it to the highest levels, I do recommend this book. I know a lot about Statistics now, but I still go back to the book and review some of the concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Difficult Text
As an older grad student who hasn't had math or a stats class in a long time, this text was tough to understand. In fact, after the first chapter, I never used it--I found Gravetter and Wallnau's "Essentials of Statistics" much more helpful.(I aced the course--but I also had a great professor).

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistical Methods for Psychology by David Howell
I am a university professor who is always looking for an advanced statistics text that will make some of the most common (and some not-so-common) statistical tests understandable and accessible to my students. It is true that this text is not suitable for the novice looking for an introduction to the field. However, for those who already understand the basic principles and concepts, this book is an invaluable tool. My graduate students love it, and I find it to be among the best of its kind. ... I yhought it would be better than what it was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lay stat. student finds the book very good.
It is amazing to read other reviews, and it became clear how we all come from varied perspectives and view things differently. I have read couple of statistics books trying to understand one thing or the other before, and have not been lucky finding a real fair text (no stat book could really be a jelly anyway!!!). However, I had the hard luck of doing stats for my M.Sc program...and G&H has been wonderful. I can't complain at all. This text is truly great...and note that I am not a prof. So, if non-profs and lay stat. takers like me could benefit from the book...then it is pretty good.

3-0 out of 5 stars book has errors, and author is unresponsive
The book is accessible to humanities students and covers necessary topics in statistics. However, it is important to note that the text is riddled with scientific and mathematical inaccuracies.I wrote a very polite letter to the author about the errors that I found in chapter 2, and he had the audacity to reply as copied below.I think a person has a lot of nerve to charge $118 for a third edition with significant errors, and then to mock a customer:Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive butjumbled
This is one of the landmark Measurement books for Psychologists. It does present a relatively comprehensive treatment of the issues facing researchers when developing measures.Unfortunately, the style of writing used in the book makes it exceedingly difficult for students to extract the useful information from the chapters.Specifically, the chapters are not particularly well organized - particularly the ones with fewer equations in them - often jumping back and forth between topics rather than presenting them more systematically.Furthermore, the prose explaning concepts and equations is basically written in an overly complex and sometimes cryptic style more appropriate for mathematicians and psychologists from the 1950's than for graduate students or modern consumers.I only bought the book to augment the graduate level measurement class that I teach and despite the fact that I have a solid background in mathematics, I grown inwardly every time I have to pick up a chapter in this book and read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars get the 2nd edition
I am in a management PhD program and we have to read this book for our required class in psychometric theory. I totally agree with one of the other reviewers that almost no term is clearly defined by Nunnally and Bernstein in this 3rd edition. The book goes on and on and on talking about validity, reliability, scaling, ... without defining any single term in a concise manner. It is very frustrating!
2-0 out of 5 stars The material may be good, but it's tough to get through
I'm in a Ph.D. program, and this is the required reading for our psychometric test.I was looking on the Border's web site to find a different book to read that would cover the same material, that would not be so difficult to understand.Nunally has a nasty habit of poorly defining terms, which makes it extremely difficult to grasp what he is talking about. It's challenging enough to understand psychometric theory, let alone with a practically illegible textbook! This book needs rewriting!I've given it two stars because supposedly the book contains a lot of valuable material.Of course, this doesn't matter one whit when you can't even read the darn thing!

4-0 out of 5 stars The importance of the g factor
Claims for the importance of social class are muted today. Surveyed punters say they are all middle class; children's educational outcomes by their twenties are only slightly related to their fathers' occupations; and even the New Statesman and the Spectator have largely given up the class war. Yet might class differences merely be temporarily obscured - perhaps by mass higher education (or miseducation)? Might class differences always tend to be re-created by differences between people in intelligence? Might `the classless society' prove a chimera?5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary review of a century of factorial studies
What would you think of an analysis of more than 400 datasets? John B. Carroll has given us an impressive review of the factorial analytic studies covered most of the human cognitive abilities. But, he has gone beyond there-analysis level and has made up a new model of intelligence: "Thethree strata model" which will help us to avoid hopeless discussionsabout the nature of the most important cognitive abilities and to advancein the actually interested topics about such abilities. Specially, hefinishes with the argument about the existence of the g factor but, he alsorecognizes the importance of the Thurstones primary mental abilities andthe Cattell and Horns distinction between fluid and crystallizedintelligence. I think everyone concerned in the cognitive abilities fieldshould read this book and keep "The three strata model" in mindin the analysis of his/her research. ... Read more

This book has been a life-saver.Its clear and concise about most of the main techniques you might need for analyzing your data. Its written as a practical guide to help you understand which statistical procedure to use.I'm a PhD student in Epidemiology and this is the book that really helped clear my concepts about the various statistical techniques and most importantly how and when to use them. All the classes I took in advanced mathematical statistics were full of jargon and theoretical stuff. This book is what helped me really understand the various techniques.Consider it a like a Dummies Guide to Practical Statistics.....I hope the author writes another book called SPSS for Advanced Statistics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Narrative statistics
I read the whole 3rd edition of this book and I did not have many complains, other than the chapter on 2 way ANOVA was too brief. I tried to look inside this book, but such info is not available here at this moment. At least I know the former edition was really good. Everything else than 2 way ANOVA was explained in narrative ways that definitively help to understand this topics much better than so many other book filled of junk equations. However, I'm not so sure if you should use this book if you're currently taking a statistic related course because you may need immediate answers, just equations and repetitive solutions. The proper and deeper knowledge that will be useful in real life when doing research takes much longer time to learn and you shold take it at some time later on. I am not a psychology major, but a chemistry one and the book is just as helpful to me as to the aimed audience, it's math after all, 1 + 1 is 2 no matter which one is your major.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Behavioral Statistics
I was truly fearful of statistics but I think this book saved me.I thought the textbook was readable, had excellent examples, the terms were clear and the text is written in an applied way.The people who rated this text harshly would not have been pleased with any stats text, after all it is stats...what math is not dry.HELLOOOO!?

2-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory for class, but not worth it
If you've ever taken a statistics class, you won't really need this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't get burned like I did!
Imagine my surprise when I thought I was getting an affordable softcoverversion of Hurlburt's excellent Psych. stats. text, to find that in factAmazon had not listed the title properly. This book is in fact the STUDYGUIDE to the text, and like all study guides is overpriced and of dubiousmerit (the sample problems in the original are entirely adequate).Ithought I could get this thorough, easy-to-read, well-illustrated andtabled text at a great price (and easily portable format) but I WAS BURNEDby Brooks/Cole (who apparently don't actually offer the softcover) andAmazon (who apparently couldn't be bothered to make the distinction whenlisting the title). That being said, in an ideal world (where few aspiringclinicians struggle), the original text is in fact worth the $81.95hardcover.I have only been able to bring myself to read half a dozenstatistics textbooks, but this one has been the most"user-friendly" in terms of its layout, tables, language and flowof material presentation.I wish my professor had used it in undergradintro. stats. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best statistics book I've read
What an easy book to read! It explains important statistical concepts clearly enough for anyone to grasp.A must read for any struggling statistic student or even students who want a better understanding of the material.

Dr. Urdan was a professor of mine, and he always made Stats very, very easy to understand. Good teacher, good book. Definitely worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent aid for the statistically-anxious student
This book is for all students who suffer any sort of statistics-anxiety and yet must take a statistics course in high school or college. Of course, it would also be of value for anyone simply interested in statistics. As college students well know, most statistics texts are typically impossible to make sense of. This book explains quite complex concepts and analyses in ways that professors are often unable to do. The examples are clean and crisp. Difficult material is brought down to earth with prose that is both user-friendly and often humorous. Well worth purchasing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Guide
This book lays out the basics of SEM in an understandable way. Doesn't address EVERY issue, but then again it's very accessible and application-oriented, with language not too highly techinical (in relation to other SEM texts).

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to follow
This is quite easy to follow for beginners but you def. need a good stats background to do so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand; needs a second edition
No one expects statistics to be easy reading, especially when it concerns complicated models such as structural equation modeling (SEM). Nevertheless, this book manages to do just that.

Hays' unique style is such that in his explanations, he takes you a step back, then two steps forward. While it can be said that some writers on statistics don't really understand the subject themselves (which makes it almost impossible to learn from them), this is definitely not the case with Hays's text. Hays' grasp of statistics is unmatched.

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable reference; Not for pleasure reading
Hays's text is not meant for everyone; hence the mixed reviews. It was not the primary source from which I gained my knowledge of statistics; however it serves as an invaluable reference. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had little difficulty understanding the material as Hays presented it. Some of the criticisms are points well-taken; for example a lack of annotation in the power tables at the end of the book (which are still decipherable if you know what you're looking at).1-0 out of 5 stars Useful as a reference, not as a book to learn from
I agree with Van Denburg's evaluation.Read more
