Still Needs Work
The focus of this dictionary is mathematical statistics, not applied statistics, and is intended for graduates and professionals. The definitions are not simple and include lots of equations. There is no other dictionary like it and it has the potential for being developed into a very useful handbook. I think it needs a lot of work, though. First, the coverage is lacking. I could not find many terms that should be in a dictionary targeted at professionals (cf. Dodge). Second, many of the definitions could stand revising for clarity (cf. Upton & Cook). Third, while there are many figures, they don't always illustrate the point as well as they could (cf. Sahai & Khurshid; Upton & Cook).

A Must Have for every teacher and researcher
An excellent yet concise encyclopedy of surprisingly wide range of statistical topics, very dense and ballanced text. Exhaustive descriptions and definitions on few lines of text with good referrences. I can hardly think of basic or advanced statistical terms not included here. Thanks.

First 100 pages good, but the rest of the book was slow
I recommend Edward Chancellor's "Devil Take the Hindmost" instead of this book.I enjoyed this book for first hundred pages (financial speculation), but I was not interested in the later sections of the book.

Hilarious...
This author retells three famous stories of speculative markets in Europe.The book essentially consists of sober accounts of how deranged a place can get amidst speculative fervors.The first two stories involved a good idea that goes horribly bad when the people in control do not completely understand the dynamics of new systems when they are implemented.The third story is about silly, unadulterated greed and the sheer obliviousness of masses to a mania.I recommend this book to those who do not want to run straight off the cliff with the lemmings during the next market crash.

Google at $400.00? Hmmmm - maybe there are more chapters to write?
Keep this book within handy reach for any time that you're getting a bit too smart for your britches. How otherwise intelligent and rational folk get themselves into these troubles is truly fascinating and instructive. The writing here is, of course, rather archaic to modern sensibilities (originally published in 1841) but the stories are interesting and very readable. It's tempting to read the tales as history but when I see Goggle trading at over $400.00 I scratch my head and wonder. And when I hear the president cutting taxes, increasing spending, and still assuring me that my Social Security payments are secure, well, I think there might be a few chapters still waiting to be writing in the book. Comprehensive, as clear as stats can be
I disagree with the other reviewer.This is the text I chose when teaching graduate multiple regression.It has excellent sections on the misuse of the statistical models and the proper interpretation of effects, two areas glossed over or omitted entirely in most texts.Especially valuable is the description of the three ways of interpreting effects in logistic regression, which none of my students had trouble understanding.Since this is out of print, it won't be a textbook again soon.So why should you buy it used?If you studied regression but felt like the class left you with half-knowledge, this is the book to read.That's how I discovered it -- and I'm glad I did.

Dense, Dry, Unclear
While this text may offer some unique insight into the analysis of psychological data, the text suffers from severe limitations.Concepts are not clearly explained, the author's statistical notation deviates wildly from standard notation, and the chapters do not flow well from one to another.In my opinion as a graduate student in the social sciences, this is one text to pass over. ... Very helpful, practical information
As a graduate student in Measurement and Research and as a new employee for a testing company, I needed a good foundation in differential item functioning (DIF) in order to be able to do DIF studies.After pulling relevant articles from the library, I realized I needed some background on this topic before it would really make sense to me. This book helped a lot. The background information on how DIF relates to validity as well as what DIF studies can and cannot accomplish set the stage for a clearer understanding of the actual analyses.Read more
