5-0 out of 5 stars The Clearest and Most Useful Book on HLM for Longitudinal Studies
This is simply the best book for those analyzing longitudinal data (data measured at more than one time point).Singer's coverage of Hierarchical Linear MOdeling (HLM) is clear, well-written (sprinkled with humor, it's like a lecture by the most popular prof. at your school), and geared towards researchers who need their programs to run, not just learn the mathematical underpinnings. Singer and Willett (the coauthor, not listed above!) set the standard for presenting math/statistics book examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking down complex analyses
This is an excellent book. Multilevel modeling and survival analysis are becoming increasingly important in psychological studies, but are pretty complicated procedures. Singer & Willet offer both a conceptual background and practical ways to do the analyses in a clear, understandable manner. The book is very readable and will be an important reference for future analyses!

5-0 out of 5 stars very clear and thorough
This book does a particularly good job of explaining the substantive meaning of the equations involved in multilevel modeling analyses. It spends a lot of extra time explaining what the equations mean in real world terms using examples from actual data sets.I teach a graduate level course on HLM and I much prefer this book to the Raudenbush & Byrk book because it not only does a better job of explaining the math (for graduate students less comfortable with statistics) but the chapters are also sprinkled with incredibly useful advice on actually running the analyses (getting them to converge, interpreting them, etc.)The Raudenbush & Bryk book probably does a slightly better job of presenting the equations, but it falls short on explanation and practical advice. If you were only going to buy one HLM book, I would start with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful applied statistical text
This is an extremely useful book to have on your shelf. It provides easy to understand, applied concepts in multivariate stats, covering regression, logistic, SEM, and more. I find the syntax examples in SAS and SPSS to be especially helpful. When appropriate it also points you in the direction of more advanced references. I use it all the time and have found it to be invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favourite statistics book
Using multivariate statistics is my favourite statistics book, and possibly my favourite textbook. This book is so clearly and simply written that it has made me comfortable tackling multivariate problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars Putting the 't' back into statistics ...
There's a reason why some students leave out the first and soften the second 't' in the word 'statistics'. Well, not if working with this book. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful!
Very good chapters for mixed-mode survey and alternative ways of delivering a questionnaire.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated but worth checking out
I purchased this book and was a bit dissapointed that there was focuse on outdated methods like mail-in responses. With the advent of the Web, we've cut our client's costs by 80% and get them a 30% better response rate.Just make sure that whatever survey provider you go with offers correlation analysis, Confidence intervals, and Cumulative distributionare among the various statistical measures used to analyze your results. We're using Vista - no other survey tool gives you all of this crucial information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Light on the technical side
For those of you who do survey research and struggle with getting an acceptible response rate, this is the book for you.It truly is an amazing resource for a method that can get one to near a 75% response even on mail-only surveys.Highly recommended.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first book for nonparametric stat methods
This is an excellent first book for nonparametric statistical methods. It is a cookbook, but is a good introduction to the many nonparametric techniques for assessing data. These are oftentimes much better suited for your data than the standard stuff you get in intro to statistics. The book by David J. Sheskin or by Conover should your next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars an easy-to-follow tool book, but use w/ caution
For a non math major (or stats major) user, this book offers an easy way to have works done quickly. But be cautious, an first-class cookbook does not necessarily yeild a first-class meal on your table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good explanatory book
I used this book for my psychological statistics course last semester. Although I have had teachers in the past who explained things more adequately, this book did a really good job explaining things for the most part. I almost always use examples to learn how to apply knowledge, as working through a problem step by step seems to be the best teacher to me. Fortunately, this book has a lot of examples. And, as a bonus, these examples apply towards the social sciences so you can see how everything fits in with a topic you're actually interested in (let's face it, few are interested in math). 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This book proved a major turning point for me as an undergrad who didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up! This book was inspiring and informative... even funny... statistics became tangible, interesting and fun. The author does an amazing job. I still use this book professionally when I need to brush up on stats analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars A student-friendly book to help you succeed in statistics!
Tales of Distribution is fun, well written and easy to read.Tales ofDistribution is a college textbook worth reading if you need to putstatistics at your command! Spats'z style is helpful to the reader and downto earth. This is a heavy-duty treatment of the topic; however, interestingexamples of how to use statistics in day-to-day life makes this topic comealive. If you read this book, you will never be intimidated by statisticsin your lifetime. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Displeased
I have had this book for two semsters at a grad level. The information is confusing and at times leaves one lost. I am very displeased with the book. It has not helped me in no way understanding the meaning behind behavioral stats. In fact I am more confused now. I wish the book could have given more details on explaining stats instead of so many examples. The examples are find but the problem is they are continued from the beginning of the book. And if one doesnot grasp the beginning then how can one grasp the remainer of the text. I wouldnot recommend this book to no one.
5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and comprehensive introductory statistics text
I have been using this text for Levels 1, 2, and 3 social sciences statistics teaching in Britain and abroad for over 8 years now. Although I have tried using other introductory texts, I have yet to find a text as comprehensive and as clearly written as this.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst stats book for the social sciences
I hate to be so critical, but I must agree with my colleague who described his/her harrowing experience with this textbook. I have two rules about learning statistics: no one is ever above a review of the most basic topics and an author/professor can never go wrong by providing a variety of examples within the same topic area. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it
...This book is the source of all you need. It's hard going at times, but so's the subject. The book's 15 years old and remains the best guide to the analysis of correlated data. It's a reference book, one I value as much as a good dictionary. To use it as a text would be misguided unless the instruction was aimed at a sophisticated audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MRC Book Ever
I agree with the previous reviewer that there are times when the exposition in the book gets a bit intense; but c'mon! We're dealing with statistics. You gotta sweat a bit. That's when learning happens. In myopinion the book is extremely clearly written. And although you may haveto re-read a few sentences a few times, the basic tools for understandingmost every major aspect of MRC is embedded in the text.In sum, this was agreat book that I read as a 2nd-year graduate student in psychology. Unlike the first reviewer, I turned to this text when I got confused duringthe course lectures!

4-0 out of 5 stars MRC Analysis---good book overall
Cohen and Cohen's MRC analysis book is well versed and easy to understand for someone that is familiar with MRC terminology, however, for first year graduate students, the text is very equivocal. The book is lacking ampleillustrations of complex problems, leaving students to rely on outsidesources. Also, the book uses unfamiliar symbols that do not correspond withother MRC books, which intensifies the confusion level of the students evenmore.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, thorough, and easy to understand
There isn't much more to say. This book is concise -- it gets right to the point, every time. It is also thorough -- it covers everything you need to move on to advanced statistics. But, best of all, it presents the material in a way that is very easy to understand and allows students to apply their new knowledge to the behavioral sciences.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome stats book!
I have taught statistics for many years and this is the best stats book I have seen. It is clearly written, has easily understood formulas, and excellent examples. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasurable reading, and easy learning
I took psychology at Monash University in Australia when I was 15 years old, and thankfully Heiman's book was the set text for research methods and statistics in the first year. Although the word "basic" is in the title, it is not a book without depth. It is an easy to read survey of undergraduate level statistics used in psychology courses. By the time you've finished with this book, you will be able to comfortably read and critique the vast majority of research papers in psychology, including some meta analyses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and grossly over-priced
I had to use this textbook for my Statistics for Pyschology Majors class at UTD. All of the other comments about the errors are true, but I have something else to add: the syntax and examples. I can handle dry reading. I've had to do plenty of it in my major. But much of this book goes beyond dry to just plain unintelligible. I'm not a math dummy. I took three semesters of algebra including College Algebra and got straight A's. A number of people in my class gave up on the book andrelied soley on the lectures. My professor told me that she isn't going to use this book next semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most effective (and easy) way to learn statistics
For a while, I was looking for a good book on statistics, and finally, I found it! This book is excellent for those who are going to start learning statistics (every thing is explained very well from very beginning!) as well as for those (like me) who look for more advanced books. It is almost perfect! It has precise and clear explanations, simple brief examples, thoughtfully chosen questions and tasks at the end of each chapter, good overall organization. Every word (well, sentence) contributes to understanding of concepts, no unnecessary information, no waste of time. Every new concept is built on the previous ones, no gaps in explanation, no unanswered questions. It feels as if the author follows a reader's mind, if some questions arise they get answered in the next paragraphs. Pure pleasure! Ultimate book on statistics! Highly recommend. ... Read more
