2-0 out of 5 stars Geez...
Right away in the introduction the author states that people - actually, "Little Leaguers" - who complain of an "old boy" network or "glass ceiling" or other discrimination are actually just babies who don't have the skills as the Big Boys have to get them to the top.So I guess only white men have the gift of gab!Who would have thunkit! After reading that introduction alone I'm leery of reading the rest of the book; she sounds either terribly ignorant or is one of those motivational authors who honestly believe that we create everything in our realities and only a few magic mantras will do the trick.Possibly both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
I haven't finished it yet but I love it already! The techniques are easy to understand and are the types of tips which are usable every day.Its just a matter or practice and learning to remember the tips because there are so many! I find it an easy and enjoyable read. Definately recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Choice
This series is a must for those who are going to do focus group research. The Focus Group kit is the single best "how to do it" manual(s) that I've read on anything. The writing is crisp and clear and the series is filled with "from the trenches" suggestions by authors who have conducted hundreds of focus groups, and who have taught hundreds of others how to do it. The series is thorough and thoughtful. Include is a rich discusion of theoretical topics --such as, how to analyze qualitative data --and very practical suggetions--such as the need for "Duct Tape" and "PZM" microphones. It is far more economic to purchase the kit than the individual books. All the books are useful, however the "Involving Community Members in Focus Groups"--which focuses on using volunteers as moderators and assistants--(for me) was too narrowly cast. I wassurprised by the author's advice not to use videotaping--something I've found indispensable in the analysis of focus groups. They advise against videotaping focus groups because it creates a "circus" atmosphere seems dated given the advent of digital video cameras, and how comfortable nearly everyone seems to be about being videtaped (Andy Warhol was right). Having said this, I can't say enough about the series. I am reading it through for the second time and have made an appointment to meet with one of the authors for some recommended "mentoring." I am going to be doing 10 groups next month. I'll be clutching a tape recorder in one hand and this series in the other.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only partly about development...
Shaffer, a professor at University of Georgia, has put his heart into this book on social and personality development.Besides the production problems noted by other reviewers (no colors, repetition, and expense), this book has conceptual and organizational problems.3-0 out of 5 stars tedious
While the text provides a lot of detailed information about research studies and theories, it is a bit tedious in rehashing the same information chapter after chapter.Basically, it tends to make the same points repeatedly throughout, and I found it somewhat boring to read. Also, the pages lack any hint of color, which only adds to the monotonous feeling. ... This book explained so much!Growing up with foster parents and no consistent parenting has made life confusing. Its been interesting to read that any adult, even the adults with the same parents from birth also have attachment issues. This is the first book I have found that explains how someone's childhood dramatically affects our ability to attach to our own children.Every parent I know wants to give their children their best and this book shows me how anyone understand ALL the sides of attachment disorder. Most of the books I have found have only explained why a child is not able to attach. What a relief to understand the whole subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for professionals in mental health fields!
Karen's work reviews attatchment research and theory from inception through present day. It's a fascinating read as well, authored by a practitioner and teacher, one who interviewed the great minds that participated in creating a phenomenal view of child development. However, the back cover recommends it as a guide for parents, which it is not. Most parents would feel misled by finding a review of the field rather than recommended parenting skills or practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most influential books I have ever read
My education is in Physics and Economics, so whatever psychological knowledge (or lack there of) I have is self-taught. Accordingly, please understand my review is from a perspective that is surely naive. That being said I found "Becoming Attached" so profound that it spawned a hunger in me too learn as much as I can about psychology that has continued unabated 2 years after I first read this book. Currently I am immersed in Carl Jung's original writings. If anyone wants a real understanding of how nurture influences individually psychology, I believe this to be an amazing starting point. Please note: this book is solid and dense, I would not read it if you are looking for something light and airy or are interested in the latest pop-psychology. It is for the serious novice. Since I am now a firm believer that nature and nurture work in combination to determine who we are individually, I also highly recommend reading the book "Moral Animal" by Robert Wright. "Moral Animal" is the perfect compliment to "Becoming Attached" and gives a very compelling introduction on how nature influences us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for some, maybe not for others
When my wife told me she wanted a divorce, I almost immediately grabbed every book I could find on resurrecting a marriage and handling a breakup with kids.I had plenty of time to read suddenly, after all.I found this book to be not only the most effective in handling kidds, but probably contained the best advice on keeping the marriage together.Alas, it was not meant to be.
5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Ashley, Ph.D. Author of The ADD and ADHD Answer Book
This is my first choice for book recommendations in my practice for divorcing families. It is a blueprint for how to raise a well adjusted child in two homes. If divorced parents only followed the advice in this book divorce would not be so tragic for children. This book advocates putting the child first and tells parent how to behave civilly and work co-operatively with the other parent for the sake of the child, telling parents what to do and what to say that keeps your child out of the middle of the anger between former spouses. This book is for every divorcing family regardless of your unique circumstances.

This book breaks down the basics for families living under two roofs. It simplifies a very complicated, emotional process with rational, logical solutions. It is a must for any parents who share custody of their children. It will keep your decision-making based on what's best for the children and not about parental conflicts.A must-read for all shared custody families. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I liked this book and it does help with expressing my opinion in a professional manner especially during a staff meeting, where there are always a few critics. But, I like the other book I bought along with it better: "The Power of Positive Confrontation"....because it had a lot more information in terms of how to confront people in every imaginable scenario, whether work, life or home.

4-0 out of 5 stars A portable behavior coach
Being a passive personality, I went looking for some kind of guidance after a recent confrontation. It goes through many basic terms and concepts of human relationships and behavior. The author wants us to understand assertiveness before trying to put new ways of thinking into practice. The important part of the author's lesson is reminding us that assertiveness is part of a person's behavior but is not the person. It builds up to the ten steps of preparing for a confrontation. The written exercises are useful, the diagrams and check boxes not so much. Some terms were basic but many times when things are not working right, we have to be reminded of the basics. Personally, I would not choose to use the assertiveness scorecards in my regular day-to-day routine. It goes over what a DESO script, Describe, Express, Script, Outcome; could mean to anybody's personal and work relationships. How one can change a few steps in giving criticism to create positive feedback. The Assertiveness workbook makes you take a breath, and think before speaking. Clear, easy-to-read, straight-to-the-point chapters are there to help when needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical Book
This book was easy to read, easy to understand and very easy to apply immediately to life circumstances.I particularly found useful the chart of behaviors and the aspects of appearance very well written, vivid and clear. This book was full of accurate user friendly information that anyone would be able to apply in their lives whatever their circumstance or job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Emergence of a true science
Reading this textbook one can appreciate the science in the science of human behavior. Not that the science of human behavior isn't well-served by the philosophy of behaviorism or by ongoing research within the area of the experimental analysis of behavior. But what I saw in this book is just how much progress has been made in applications and how fully the scientific method has been utilized.
5-0 out of 5 stars Remains as relevant today as when it came out!
Is it possible to change one's own life and the lives of others by arranging our surroundings (environment) in a particular way? Any student of applied behavior analysis (ABA) would strongly shout out YES!
5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
This book provides the best text-book style introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis there is.The writing is straight-forward and well-organized.The only thing one could wish for is a second edition, but in the foreword it states they promised their families that there woulnd't be one :)That's ok, it provides all the groundwork one needs to read and understand the literature since then. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Abnormal Child Psycology? Blaa to it...
This book may contatin alot of useful information. I am a second year student in the Child And Youth Worker program, and it cost me about $140, for about $50 of use...alot of the information in this book was new to me, and I did learn alot, but having said that, the only reason I bought it was because it was mandatory. This book is the most boring piece of crap I have had to read thus far in my program. Facts left and right, but little connection in the actual paragraphs. All connections made are in blurbs about other people's storys. And even those a weak at best. I recomend NOT buying this book. Waste of money and time. If you in college and you need to buy it, show your prof. these two reviews, then refuse to buy it yourself :)

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book, I use it for my classes
I use this text for my undergrad and grad classes. The information is complete and has great breadth. My undergraduates have found this to be a great resource for information on classes of disorders and on specific disorders. It is easy to read, without being simplistic. The pedagogical features (e.g., sidebars, pictures, etc.) are a matter for personal choice.I personally feel they are distracting, but my undergraduate students like them and say that they are helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable Reference Causes Doubt
On page 19, under the heading of Selective Perception and Communication, the authors indicate that "research" has shown that grades received by teachers reveal bias of the teacher as opposed to the actual level of knowledge of the child. Two specific examples are provided but WITHOUT citation to the supposed research.Since the research material is so well documented in the rest of the book, I question why they did not make the citation available here.I would like to read this research but am left without the option to find it myself.Ironically, my view of everything that I read in this book from this point on will be tarnished by this experience.

It's about par with every other persuasion text. Nothing spectacular about it. Don't buy unless you have. I give it 4 stars because as text books go, it's an easy read. If you're looking for your own interest in persuasion, read influence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The only textbook I've ever enjoyed
I'm a first-semester MSW student.I don't have a background in social work or the social sciences, so I may be way off when I say that this is the most informative textbook that I've ever read.(Mind you, I'd stil rather be reading something by Howard Zinn or Jared Diamind.)Every page teaches me something new.If it has organizational problems, I haven't noticed, because reading it is so engrossing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very poor text book
I'm in a MSW program and this text book was part of the reading material. For a text book, its poorly written. The book jumps from topic to topic and does not have a clear flow from one subject to anouther. Items are misplaced and the information is difficult to find. In my class of 25 student there was no one who was happy with this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dynamics of Conflict Resolution: A Practitioner's Guide
I know others have found this a good resource but I found it very dry and tedious to read.I returned the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essentials of Conflict and its Resolution
To understand conflict, attention needs to be paid to the differences in ways individuals approach it. The way people handle conflict is definition of who they are and how they relate to others.People approach to conflict derives not only from their upbringing and how they have been taught to deal with conflict, but their culture plays a key role.Conflict often is generated when people feel disempowered.Power is the currency for conflict whether its exercise is intentional or not; when people are in conflict their power is in play. The choice in conflict is not whether to use power but how to use it. When people try to meet their needs in face of resistance, they are exercising power. The success of conflict depends on part on how much power they are able to muster and how wise they are in using it.The use of power can escalate or deescalate a conflict. It can create resistance or overcome it.People can employ their power to create momentum for constructive dialogue and collaborative negotiations; or they can use it to beat others down and to prevent co-operation. Everyone has a choice of how to use power or how to respond to power; the one choice participants don't have is not having any power at all.5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and well written
