4-0 out of 5 stars Question your assumptions and challenge what you think you know
This book provides a well-organized survey of issues that limit our reasoning abilities:
3-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Been Better Than It Was
Gilovich starts this book of with a real bang! After reading the Introduction, I thought this book would be really interesting and change the way I look at the world. He writes in a college-teacher tone that will not be approachable to those he most needs to reach. In other words, I really don't need a book to tell me to avoid holistic cretins, ESP, psychics, mysticism, and all that other garbage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Required for all psychology students!!!
This book is a contemporary classic that should be required reading in all psychology programs. As a psychologist, I am regularly appalled by how few trained psychologists know of the research discussed in this book, indeed, of decision science in general!! It only goes to show, there's scientific psychology (of which this book qualifies), and then, well, there's the other 99%...the crap, fluff, unsupported, unscientific, claims and practices that arise out of pseudo-scientific approaches, misinterpretations of data, and fallacious assumptions and conclusions. As an exemplar of what's good in a field rife with methodological manure and hocus pocus B.S. (e.g. psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc.), this book really shines. Read it and discover why some of psychology really is a science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and thought provoking
There is something to be said of a person who can go through a horrific journey such as the atrocities of Auschwitz and recall it with such clarity in order to help others. I was completely emotionally overwhelmed by the first half of the book-which is a narrative of what he experienced and fascinated with the next half which is an explanation of logotherapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars A teen's perspective on an almost four star book
"Odd Girl Speaks Out" is a book of short stories by teen and preteen girls about their experiences with relationships between other girls.Opening the beginning of each section is commentary by the editor relating to what the section will be about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Memory Reminders
As we age I think it becomes harder and harder for us to remember our childhoods accurately.I was finishing up this book as I was giving a final exam and one of my students asked me, "Why are you reading that?"I tried to explain to her the research on female aggression that psychologists have been doing.I also tried to explain to her that authors like Simmons are making these research results and the personal "case studies" they apply to more available to the public and accessible to the people who need them (i.e., young girls, parents, and teachers). Both of these reasons should be enough for a person to read this collection of accounts of aggression, but I also feel things like this are important to read specifically because our memories are not accurate and maturity overrides our negative experiences sometimes.Even if you've forgotten what it was like to have no friends or to fear losing the friends you do have, your daughter, student, or client has not.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
I am a Registered Nurse, with 3 college degrees, working on a Masters in Education.I bought this book for my 14 year-old daughter. After we read it together, I will give it to my friend, who is a Professional Counselor for children. She has a Masters in Ed already.I'm not saying that all these degrees I'm speaking of are important or that you need them to order this book.I think anyone with a daughter should order this book.I am only speaking about our education because I want you to know that professionals are also buying & using this book in our profession.Thank you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendations were correct
After reading how many experienced facilitators recommended this book, I decided to give it a try. They were right; it is excellent.I am extremely pleased and expect to use this well planned and organized book as my first resource when looking for exercises for the groups I am facilitating.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Core Facilitation Book
If you have only one facilitation book in your library, choose this one. Kaner and friends distill the fundamental issues of group facilitation, present it in clear language and bring it to life with simple, effective illustrations. I've used this book with colleagues who don't speak English using the images alone. I have bought and given it away countless times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for teaching others how to facilitate a meeting
I've been facilitating meetings for years, and gained an intuitive wisdom about how to best do so.This book breaks down common practices in to useful tables, charts and definitions, making it easy to explain to others how and why I manage meetings the way I do.I also learned things from the book that will improve my own facilitation, so it has great info not only for beginners but also for veteran facilitators. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book.
I like this book. It is filled with a lot of interesting information about how the U.S. justice system uses psychology and psychologists. It also clearly defines what a forensic psychologist is. I am a fourth year psychology major and have read many psychology books about a variety of psychological subjects, and this bookis one of the most intresting I have read in a while. The only thing I do not like about it is that it has no glossary of the bold words, only a subject and name index. This makes it a little difficult to completely understand what the vocabulary words mean especially since many of them are legal terms.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst textbook I've ever wasted money on...
Poorly ordered, extremely dry, and almost impossible to read. And I've read a lot of textbooks.

3-0 out of 5 stars good info
the book has good information and is very throrough, but chapters are wordy and could probably be condensed. overall, the book is of good quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking book
This is a truly comprehensive theory textbook that covers complex theories in a manner that makes them accessible to the reader. The authors are to be applauded for making a critical analysis of theory a central component of each chapter and for including theories that most other textbooks have ignored.

2-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read

4-0 out of 5 stars Very different than most relationship advice books.
This book presents a unique approach to snagging guys.It teaches you how to use psychology to your advantage. The author argues that there are 3 types of men: visual, auditory, feelings. You speak to and treat each one differently. For example, when talking to a visual man, you say stuff like, "I SEE why you have that opinion".It makes them think that you really are on the same level and that you understand them.I can see why, from a logical point of view, that her advice and techniques would be successful.I was intrigued very much so by her "method" and have yet to try it for myself. To be honest, it wasn't what I expected.Sometimes, it got too wrapped up in psychology that it started to make relationships a little impersonal and mechanical.Well, at least she has her PH.D., so I guess her approach is accurate.I'd still recommend this, though, if you want a different read.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!!
Although this another tome aimed primarily toward women, as a gay man who is also searching for love, I could not resist picking up this book--and boy am I glad I did.I had my "queer eye" on a fellow at work named Jerry for a long time, but he never seemed interested in me.But finally I applied the techniques described in this fine book, and soon I found I couldn't keep Jerry away from me!Soon we were expressing our affection for each other anywhere we could and every way we could; the bathroom, the boss's office, the movie theater, the Denny's parking lot, you name it.It was the best two-and-a-half weeks of my life. Then Jerry left me, called me a few homophobic slurs, and went back to his estranged wife, but I will always be thankful for this book for allowing to experience some of the best times of my life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Meh
This book isn't worthless, but it's not very good either.Cabot encourages women to be positive, specific and proactive in their approach to men, which I appreciate. She devotes a good portion of the book to the "love languages"--auditory, visual, and feeling. This information, so long as it's not pushed to the extreme or used by a manipulator, is interesting and could help people in any sort of relationship. However, ultimately, this is still a "man-hunting" book, with all that that phrase implies.I think that Cabot's approach requires a bit of tunnel vision, a bit of obsession about men, and a lot of manipulation.Take what you can from it, but I think that Sherry Argov's Why Men Love [...]is a better investment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Turvey demystifies criminal profiling
This book by Mr. Turvey offers a lucid and comprehensive overview of criminal profiling. Contrary to popular belief, criminal profiling is not science per se but rather a collection of subjective views offered by renowned criminal profilers. Most of these views have not been scientifically corroborated and according to Turvey there is no concensus amongst criminal profilers on this subject. Turvey holds that much more scientific research is required in order to substantiate many claims. What separates Turvey's book from most books on this subject is his refusal to make sensationalistic assertions. Every major theory is explained clearly and both its strengths and flaws are accounted for. Inductive and deductive methods are reviewed extensively and meticulously and it becomes readily apparent to the reader that criminal profiling has been only somewhat beneficial in a few cases. In most cases, criminal profilers have failed to offer an accurate profile of the perpetrator, small wonder given the extreme complexity of human nature.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
Don't waste your money on this book.As a professor of Criminology, I found Mr. Turvey's approach to be quite juvenile in it's theories.Mr. Tuvey's analysis often contradicts itself in following chapters.I advise my students that there are far better books about criminal profiling on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Text in Crime Scene Behavior Analysis
Mr. Turvey has done an outstanding job in assembling and presenting critical, fundamental concepts on behavioral analysis of crimes and criminals based upon what the physical evidence describes. The introduction by John Thornton, PhD, one of the worlds leading forensic scientists and authors is an endorsement that says it all. Each human act is unique in the context of the mindset of the offender and his behavior at the time of the crime. This book describes the effective analyis and interpretation based upon the uniqueness of each crime scene evidence and event, keeping the investigator on track. This book should be required reading for all "introduction to criminal investigation" classes for both law enforcement and the defense bar. The book demonstrates the importance of merging and considering all aspects of victimology, forensic science, psychology and good old fashioned investigative work. Mr. Turvey does an excellent job of promoting the deductive, individualized analysis of a crime. Although it is tempting to look at the "statistical" data of similar scenes, the inductive process can be distracting and misleading. Yes, he takes a few jabs at some of FBI's legends, however it is more likely that he attacks the process and not the individual. For those of us who have worked with the Feds and enjoyed their friendship, it does evoke a chuckle or two... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, no-nonsense, and engaging.
This book is very interesting. As the title implies -- sociopaths seem to be "everywhere", for lack of a better word. But the book, in my opinion, is not meant to sensationalize or to scare -- in fact, I found it very informative. It's also not boring to read.Even if you aren't a Psychology buff (as I'm not) it is layman-friendly and doesn't use a lot of jargon from her field; and, when she does, Dr. Stout takes time to explain. She uses plenty of examples and takes a no-nonsense approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Conscience Or Superego?
Despite the marketing of the book as a "how to" in isolating destructive types conquering your life in which it succeeds..the book itself is also a lucid study in dealing with the questions surrounding human motivation, nature nurture arguements, inflation of ego,the clash between rugged individualism and the common good as well as clarity in outlining the arguments with evolutionary biology and psychology as to the future of mankind and the creation of a just society based on conscience.
5-0 out of 5 stars If you deal with people, you need this book

5-0 out of 5 stars guided by Bronfenbrenner
As an instructor, I found this to be an excellent text.In particular, I appreciated the repeated incorporation of cross-cultural research. This text answers the call for incorporating diversity across the curriculum.Repeated inclusion of cross-cultural similarities and differences, combined with repeated discussions of the interconnections of multiple variables, helps students move away from a "one-size fits all" approach and egocentric thinking.By the end of the semester, when students were presented with a hypothetical problem scenario to resolve, they quickly outlined a list of additional details they would need to know, offering how each variable (parenting style, ethnicity, location of residence, violence within family, etc.) would alter the "goodness of fit" of their intervention. Also, the author does not shy away from presenting research evidence that is sometimes contradictory or inconclusive, which provides an excellent opportunity for in-class discussions of the reality of research and how, as a field, we address these issues. The only drawback is the amount of information sometimes overwhelmed students, so I found it necessary to focus their reading on certain sections of each chapter - however this can also be viewed as strength, since it allowed me to "customize" my course to some extent.

Hofstede's work was and is not really helpful; perhaps fascinating for those who deal with the issues from the comfortable space of their warm home of office in a western country.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very valueable, if taken as Hofstede has meant it
Although many comments have already been accumulated let me add something, since some of the reviews tend to get out of focus. Hofstede never claimed to have studied cultures in general, he studied effects of culture on work-related values. For this topic his work is still the standard. The starting point is like this: a large company like IBM tries to establish a strong corporate identity shared among all of its worldwide employees ("We are IBM" kind of thing). However, if you ask them a couple of questions about their work-related values, they answer differently. Turns out, the differences can be explained to some degree by the employee's country-of-origin, that is his or her culture. Hofstede then goes on and tries to find dimensions in order to describe the differences between cultures, - and it has to be said again and again - dimensions for "work-related values" and not for culture in general! This observation was and is tremendously important for multinational companies. It means that we are still influenced even when we work at a multinational firm by our cultural traditions and that this cannot easily be exchanged by the company's culture. Of course if you are more interested in other aspects of culture, than Hofstede's books might not the prime choice for you to study.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Train Wreck
Reading the previous reviews, several things are evident. The West Palm Beach review is nothing more than an ad hominen attack on a previous review.Furthermore, the Palm Beach reviewer mistakes sticking to the subject with "we're the only game in town" argument/counterargument assertion. It is very easy to ignore Hofstede's work completely, start from zero and perform a real cross cultural analysis, 2-3 three countries at a time, starting IN the native language and then making a comparison that speaks in its own voice. This is NOT the same as Hofstede's doing the surveys in English and then translating them twice. The Palm Beach reviewer also falls into the argumentum ad ignorantium fallacy (must be true because it hasn't been proven false) by saying "I mean that no reputable research on cultural values will fail to include Hofstede's work because it has been so influential" as well as appeal to celebrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of Psychology's Past, Present, and Future
This book was used for one of my classes this past fall. It is very readable, and all of the names that you learn in psych classes actually become people, characters in the development of this ever-broadening field. I thought it was a great start to get psychology students more interested in the people who came before them.

4-0 out of 5 stars History source of psychology
We are using this book in our class. I do think it is a great book compared to others I have read. I like that they filter through and supply just facts. If you need to know how psychology came about and who attributed to it, this is an excellent source to read. I can say there are times its hard for me to put down the book, then other areas seem to be hard to grasp. Over all the book is a great reference and started book in the history of psychology

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate, yet not overbearing summation of modern psychology
Schultz and Schultz offer a wonderful summation of the history of psychology. Many history of psychology texts are large and burdensome, but Schultz and Schultz sift out the waste and offer the facts.Interestinganecdotes about psychology's pioneers are offered, and the social climatesurrounding the perspectives of each school of thought is also mentioned. All in all, this is a great book to have in the collection for the averagehistorian of psychology. The authors, unfortunately, do present theinformation in a rather bland display.More color and layout effect wouldbe useful and appealing.Furthermore, the chapter on the impact of womenand minorities in psychology should not just be thrown on the end of thebook ... it should be integrated throughout.Other than those twodrawbacks, however, the book is wonderfully done. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hike on!
As a somewhat outdoor type (ski regularly, backcountry camp about once a year) I found this to be a pretty fascinating look at survival that comes at it from many different perspectives. It is not a survival guide per se.It is not an in-depth account of the survival stories that it tells (most of these stories can be found more detailed in more exhaustive accounts like "Touching The Void".)What this book is (as the cover indicates) is a look at that profound question of why some survive and others don't and what drives us to risk our lives for thrills.Like the systems he describes, even this question has many factors. There is no one way to survive, or one factor that makes somebody a survivor. All too often, the greatest "survivor", doesn't.And realizing and accepting that fact seems to be a big part in giving the best effort to beat the odds.
4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling journalistic account about the moxie of survivor-adventurers
Elements of "Deep Survival" were quite memorable, especially the story of the ill-fated sailing venture where one incredible woman managed to survive unbelievably difficult circumstances. The work did remind me "The Perfect Storm" at that point. However, I agree with another review that the lengthy summary of Joe Simpson's ordeal on the West Face of Suila Grande WAS lackluster in comparison with the actual narrative in "Touching the Void.As a long-time climber, I found Gonzales' account of the tragedy on Mt. Hood realistic and compelling. Those of us who have survived mountain accidents can certainly identify with the stories related by the survivors of the fall down the ice field and with Gonzales' handling of that horrible event. My hands started sweating as I recalled some of my more harrowing adventures in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada. He's clearly a journalist/adventurer a la Jon Krakauer, not a scientist, so anyone reading the book should read the technical passages about neuroscience, etc. in that context.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy but beware of the wilderness.
Wilderness is so-called because it instills an element of fear and awe to those who live by the predictable rhythms of urban and suburban life (of course, there is also such a thing as urban wilderness; same rules as spelled out in this book may also apply).Wilderness is there to appreciate by those who should also be cognizant of its risks and any unforeseen circumstances.
